ABSTRACT

Background: Studies have shown that music therapy can be used as a therapeutic aid for clinical disorders. To evaluate the effects of music therapy (MT) on language communication and social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a meta-analysis was performed on eligible studies in this field. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in eight databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library databases, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data, the Chinese Biomedical Literature (CBM) Database, and the VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodicals Database. The standard mean difference (SMD) values were used to evaluate outcomes, and the pooled proportions and SMD with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were also calculated. Results: Eighteen randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies were included, with a total of 1,457 children with ASD. This meta-analysis revealed that music therapy improved their language communication [SMD = -1.20; 95%CI -1.45, -0.94; χ2 (17) = 84.17, I2 = 80%, p < 0.001] and social skills [SMD = -1. 13; 95%CI -1.49, -0.78; χ2 (17) = 162.53, I2 = 90%, p < 0.001]. In addition, behavior [SMD = -1.92; 94%CI -2.56, -1.28; χ2 (13) = 235.08, I2 = 95%, p < 0.001], sensory perception [SMD = -1.62; 95%CI -2.17, -1.08; χ2 (16) = 303.80, I2 = 95%, p < 0.001], self-help [SMD = -2. 14; 95%CI -3.17, -1.10; χ2 (6) = 173.07, I2 = 97%, p < 0.001] were all improved. Conclusion: Music therapy has a positive effect on the improvement of symptoms in children with ASD. Systematic review registration: https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/.

ABSTRACT

Numerous studies reported inconsistent results concerning gender influences on the functional organization of the brain for language in children and adults. However, data for the gender differences in the functional language networks at birth are sparse. Therefore, we investigated gender differences in resting-state functional connectivity in the language-related brain regions in newborns using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The results revealed that female newborns demonstrated significantly stronger functional connectivities between the superior temporal gyri and middle temporal gyri, the superior temporal gyri and the Broca's area in the right hemisphere, as well as between the right superior temporal gyri and left Broca's area. Nevertheless, statistical analysis failed to reveal functional lateralization of the language-related brain areas in resting state in both groups. Together, these results suggest that the onset of language system might start earlier in females, because stronger functional connectivities in the right brain in female neonates were probably shaped by the processing of prosodic information, which mainly constitutes newborns' first experiences of speech in the womb. More exposure to segmental information after birth may lead to strengthened functional connectivities in the language system in both groups, resulting in a stronger leftward lateralization in males and a more balanced or leftward dominance in females.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Our study contributes to the further understanding of the mechanism of foot reflexology. Foot reflexology has been reported to affect hearing recovery, but no physiological evidence has been provided. This lack of evidence hampers the acceptance of the technique in clinical practice. CASE SUMMARY: A girl was taken to North Sichuan Medical University Affiliated Hospital for a hearing screen by her parents. Her parents reported that her hearing level was the same as when she was born. The girl was diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) by a doctor in the otolaryngology department. After we introduced the foot reflexology project, the parents agreed to participate in the experiment. After 6 months of foot reflexology treatment, the hearing threshold of the girl recovered to a normal level, below 30 dB. CONCLUSION: Foot reflexology should be encouraged in clinical practice and for families of infants with SNHL.

ABSTRACT

Consecutive interpreting involves a demanding language task where mental workload (MWL) is crucial for assessing interpreters' performance. An elevated cognitive load in interpreters may lead to the interpretation failures. The widely used NASA-TLX questionnaire effectively measures MWL. However, a global score was employed in previous interpretation studies, overlooking the distinct contributions of MWL components to the interpreters' performance. Accordingly, we recruited twenty novice interpreters who were postgraduate students specializing in interpreting to complete the consecutive interpreting task. Throughout the process, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to monitor the hemodynamic response in participants' brains. The NASA-TLX was used to measure the MWL during interpreting with six components, including mental demand, physical demand, temporal demand, performance, effort, and frustration. Five interpretation experts were invited to assess the interpretation quality. The Bayes factor approach was employed to explore the components that contributes the most to the interpretation quality. It indicated that mental demand strongly contributed to the interpretation quality. Moreover, the mediation analysis revealed a positive correlation between mental demand and brain activation in three brain areas, which, in turn, was negatively correlated with interpretation quality, indicating the predictive role of mental demand in interpretation quality through the mediating of brain activation. The functions of the mediating brain areas, including the inferior frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, and inferior temporal gyrus, aligned with the three efforts proposed by Gile's effort model, which emphasizes the significance of three fundamental efforts in achieving successful interpreting. These findings have implications for interpreter learning and training.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have primarily focused on the relationship between native language (L1) and second language (L2) in the brain, specifically in one language modality, such as written or spoken language. However, there is limited research on how L2 proficiency impacts both modalities. This study aimed to investigate the functional networks involved in reading and speech comprehension for both L1 and L2, and observe changes in these networks as L2 proficiency improves. The dataset used in this study was obtained from a previous research conducted by Gurunandan et al., which involved Spanish-English bilingual participants undergoing a three-month English training program. Participants underwent fMRI scanning and performed a semantic animacy judgment task in both spoken and written language before and after training. Through analysis, distinct neural networks associated with spoken and written language were found between individuals' L1 and L2, both before and after training. Moreover, as L2 proficiency improved, the spoken and written networks for L2 remained distinct from those of the L1. These findings suggest that short-term L2 learning experiences can modify neural networks, but may not be enough to achieve native-like proficiency, supporting the accommodation hypothesis. These results have important implications for language learning and education, indicating that additional short-term training and exposure alone may not bridge the gap between L1 and L2 processing networks.

ABSTRACT

Waste sorting, as an embodiment of behavioral cognition, is regulated by two cognitive processes, namely, Categorization (C) and Category-Based Induction (CBI). This study employed the event-related potential (ERP) technique to assess whether there is a transformation between C and CBI in waste sorting cognition, in order to help individuals establish a correct waste sorting behavior. We reported a case of intervention in waste sorting education with a 58-year-old Chinese woman to discriminate whether such intervention facilitates the transition between C and CBI. The results showed that the waste sorting cognition follows a developmental model as C-CBI-C, where education may help the subject build a cognitive framework for waste sorting by altering inherent misperceptions and filling gaps in classification knowledge. The results also noticed that FN400 is identified as a characteristic waveform in the CBI process, by which it is indicated that the first 4 to 7 days of education is a critical period for establishing the cognitive framework. Through a comparison of the ERP waveforms at different stages of intervention, the results are insightful to help individuals improve their cognition of waste sorting.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the review was to assess the relationship between insulin resistance and cognitive impairment. Medline, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched. Two independent authors selected studies and extracted data. Quality of included studies was assessed by NOS (Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale). A random-effects model with its 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was considered for meta-analysis. Eight articles including 1,399 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The article showed a negative association between insulin resistance and cognition (R = - 0.262; 95% CI-0.309, - 0.215). There is evidence that insulin resistance may be a mechanism of cognitive impairment. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although many functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have investigated the language architecture and neurobiological mechanism underlying poststroke aphasia (PSA), the pathophysiological mechanisms of PSA still remain poorly understood. In addition to a limited number of subjects (<20) tested with different methodologies and stimuli, inconsistent reports of the brain regions involved have been a major factor. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis of 12 peer-reviewed studies of abnormal brain activation regions in PSA patients at rest using activation likelihood estimation (ALE). RESULTS: A meta-analysis was performed based on 24 experiments with 497 total participants in 12 studies to establish the ALE of regional activation in PSA. Through experiments with PSA patients and healthy controls, we found that hypoactivation in PSA converged on the left superior frontal gyrus and the left parietal postcentral gyrus, whereas there was hyperactivation in the right cerebellar anterior lobe, left fusiform gyrus, left superior parietal lobule, and right subgyral hippocampus. CONCLUSION: Our study verified that dominant and nondominant language networks play roles in the recovery of language function.

ABSTRACT

Sensoryneuronal hearing loss (SNHL) is one type of hearing impairment. The incidence of hearing loss (HL) is 1-3 per 1000 births. Complementary therapies may be effective in addressing the maladies of infants with HL. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of foot reflexotherapy in an infant with SNHL. The patient was a 3-month-old infant with SNHL. Pretest and post-test for HL were conducted using an audiologic method (auditory brainstem responses) combined with behavioral audiometry. The subject was treated with foot reflexotherapy for 30 min per session four times per week for a period of 24 weeks. Foot reflexotherapy was effective in auditory recuperation of an infant with SNHL. The results of this novel study suggest that foot reflexotherapy can be an effective complementary treatment for infants with SNHL, especially for those 3 to 9 months of age.

ABSTRACT

1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl acrylate (PFDA) was grafted using electron beam irradiation to hydrophobize the cellulose nanocrystals' (CNC) surface. FT-IR and XPS measurements showed that PFDA was grafted onto the CNC surface. The results of SEM and EDS showed that PFDA was grafted to the CNC surface in a spherical shape. As a result of the XRD measurement, it was confirmed that the crystallinity of PFDA decreased as it was grafted onto the CNC surface. As a result of the contact angle measurement, it was shown that as the PFDA was grafted on the CNC surface, the contact angle increased, which means that the hydrophobicity increased.

ABSTRACT

The present study examined the relationship between prosody and semantic processing in the written form of modern Chinese by analysing behavioural data and event-related potential data. By manipulating the number of noun syllables in verb-objection, we compare the dynamic neural mechanisms of the structure bisyllabic verb (V2)+monosyllabic noun (N1) (i.e. V2+N1) with V2+N1 (N2, bisyllabic noun). In Chinese, the rhythmic pattern V2+N1 is considered to be a metrical incongruity, whereas V2+N2 is considered to be a metrical congruity. For example, the verb yunshu (to transport) can be followed by liangshi (cereals). However, if yunshu is followed by liang (cereals), yunshu liang is usually considered to be metrically incongruous. This paper shows that (i) V2+N1 elicited more negative amplitudes than V2+N2 in the 90-170 ms and 450-500 ms windows, which indicates that metrical incongruities affect semantic processing in Chinese, and (ii) the acceptance rate for V2+N1 is significantly lower than that of V2+N2, which implies that metrical incongruities disrupt semantic processing in modern Chinese. These results are in agreement with previous studies. This is the first study to find that metrical incongruities disrupt semantic processing in Chinese. This study provides convergent evidence that metrical congruities facilitate semantic processing, whereas metrical incongruities disrupt semantic processing.
