ABSTRACT

In animal contests, the value an individual assigns to limited resources can directly impact the level of aggression it demonstrates. For territorial species, individuals often assess their territory quality and appropriately modify the time and energy invested in its defense. In this study, male and female convict cichlids, Amatitlania nigrofasciata, were acclimated to one of three territorial treatments representing either a low, medium, or high resource value. Territories with a "Low Value" included substrate alone, "Medium Value" territories included substrate and a nest site, and a "High Value" territory included substrate, a nest site, and constant food source. After three days of acclimation, a size-matched intruder was introduced to elicit territorial aggression and behaviors were observed. Territory quality affected one measure of low-intensity aggression (displays) in residents but had no effect on high-intensity aggression (bites and chases). Moreover, there was a significant effect of sex, with males and females differing in the types of aggressive behaviors demonstrated across all treatments. Females showed more low-intensity aggressive behaviors toward intruders than males did. Additionally, a significant interaction of sex and territory quality was observed on two measures of high-intensity aggressive behavior (bites and chases), with females more likely than males to increase aggressive behaviors along with increasing territory quality. This suggests that females may be more sensitive and/or responsive to changes in the quality of a territory, possibly due to the necessity of a suitable nest site for egg deposition within a territory.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: While the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) provides standards, there is variation allowed in design and implementation of supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs). Limited research has assessed for a correlation between SCPE design and program outcomes, including PANCE "First-Time Taker Pass Rate." The objective of this research is to evaluate for trends and best practices in clinical education design, as well as any correlation to PANCE pass rate. METHODS: Data were gathered through an online survey with 14 multiple-choice questions referring to "core" clinical rotations and then anonymously tabulated. Participants were identified by ARC-PA's listing of PA programs as of May 2014, excluding those programs with "Accreditation-Provisional" or "Accreditation-Probation" statuses. Contact was initiated with one faculty member at each program. A post hoc analysis was performed to evaluate for correlations between SCPE design and PANCE pass rates. RESULTS: Our research quantifies variation in many aspects of the administration and design of the clinical education curriculum. During post hoc analysis, the groups were divided into "above average" and "average or below" in relation to PANCE pass rates compared with the national average, with several significant differences identified. These differences include the average length of rotation, programs that require a minimum end-of-rotation passing score, and programs that require a minimum score on the preceptor evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: This research demonstrated many viable options and approaches to various components of clinical education, as well as some correlations between supervised clinical practice experience (SCPE) design and PANCE first-time taker pass rates.

ABSTRACT

In systems where territory quality varies, animals are expected to exhibit plasticity in behaviour in order to maximize fitness relative to their present territory quality. This requires assessment of territory quality followed by decision-making in relation to the priority of activities necessary for survival and reproduction. We examined how differences in territory quality of beaugregory damselfish (Stegastes leucostictus) influence the prioritization of courtship and egg defence by comparing behavioural responses of males defending artificial sites (high quality) with males defending natural sites (low quality) when presented with an egg predator, a conspecific female, and a simultaneous choice between both. A significant three-way interaction of territory quality, presentation type and stimulus was observed for time near stimuli. In paired presentations, males defending low-quality territories spent more time near a female and less near an egg predator; while males on high-quality territories spent more time near a predator than a female. Additionally, comparing single and paired presentations reveals that behaviours towards egg predators remain constant while behaviours towards females decrease with paired stimuli. These data suggest that territory quality and ecological context impact decision-making and the relative values of potential reproduction and/or past reproductive effort.
