ABSTRACT

Various water pollution issues pose a significant threat to human water safety. Magnetic polydopamine composites (MPCs), which can be separated by magnetic fields after the adsorption process, exhibit outstanding adsorption capacity and heterogeneous catalytic properties, making them promising materials for water treatment applications. In particular, by modifying the polydopamine (PDA) coating, MPCs can acquire enhanced high reactivity, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility. This also provides an attractive platform for further fabrication of hybrid materials with specific adsorption, catalytic, antibacterial, and water-oil separation capabilities. To systematically provide the background knowledge and recent research advances in MPCs, this paper presents a critical review of MPCs for water treatment in terms of both structure and mechanisms of effect in applications. Firstly, the impact of different PDA positions within the composite structure is investigated to summarize the optimization of properties contributed by PDA when acting as the shell, core, or bridge. The roles of various secondary modifications of magnetic materials by PDA in addressing water pollution problems are explored. It is anticipated that this work will be a stimulus for further research and development of magnetic composite materials with real-world application potential.

ABSTRACT

Hydrostatic guideways are widely applied in ultra-precision machine tools, and motion errors undermine the machining accuracy. Among all the influence factors, the thermal effect distributes most to motion errors. Based on the kinematic theory and the finite element method, a 3-degrees-of-freedom quasi-static kinematics model for motion errors containing the thermal effect was established. In this model, the initial state of the closed rail as a "black box" is regarded, and a self-consistent setting method for the initial state of the guide rails is proposed. Experiments were carried out to verify the thermal motion errors simulated by the finite element method and our kinematics model. The deviation of the measured thermal vertical straightness error from the theoretical value is less than 1 µm, which ensured the effectiveness of the model we developed.

ABSTRACT

Laser fusion research requires a large number of high-precision large-diameter aspherical components. To improve the grinding efficiency in the component production process, the manual operation time during the grinding process needs to be reduced. The grinding process requires the installation of the dressed grinding wheel onto the grinding machine spindle, and the off-line dressing results in installation errors during the loading and unloading process, which requires more time for manual alignment. To achieve self-aligning, the circumferential contour of the grinding wheel was first restored by the reversal method, then noise reduction and circle fitting were performed to obtain the eccentricity value and eccentricity position between the flange and the spindle, and finally, the flange was adjusted finely by three piezoelectric actuators installed inside the flange to reduce the eccentricity. Three repetitive experiments were conducted to verify that the self-aligning flange can reduce the eccentricity value by retracting the piezoelectric actuators so that the proper alignment between the flange and the spindle could meet the requirements; the average eccentricity value of the three experiments decreased by 74%, which greatly improved the efficiency of the grinding wheel alignment.
