ABSTRACT

We propose and analyze a novel realization of a solid-state quantum network, where separated silicon-vacancy centers are coupled via the phonon modes of a quasi-one-dimensional diamond waveguide. In our approach, quantum states encoded in long-lived electronic spin states can be converted into propagating phonon wave packets and be reabsorbed efficiently by a distant defect center. Our analysis shows that under realistic conditions, this approach enables the implementation of high-fidelity, scalable quantum communication protocols within chip-scale spin-qubit networks. Apart from quantum information processing, this setup constitutes a novel waveguide QED platform, where strong-coupling effects between solid-state defects and individual propagating phonons can be explored at the quantum level.

ABSTRACT

The introduction of rapid diagnostic clinics for breast cancer increases oncology nurses' (ONs) responsibility for patient education and coordination of multidisciplinary care. Developed as an outcome of the E-Mentorship Oncology Nursing Program, this paper proposes new roles for these nurses to respond effectively and competently to such diagnostic innovation. The Oslo Manual Conceptual Framework of Innovation inspired the idea of change in prospective ONs' roles, corroborated by the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology's Standards of Practice and Competencies. New roles for ONs that are informed by the domain of information dynamics and evidence-based care are proposed.

ABSTRACT

Ontario health care reform has necessitated many changes in the nursing profession. To practice effectively, nurses must readjust their roles and training. This article discusses a revised bachelor of nursing program that is the result of collaboration between two teams of educators from the French-language division of the School of Nursing at Laurentian University and the Nursing Program at Collège Boréal in Sudbury, Ontario. It describes the preliminary stages of program development, the major players, the underlying philosophy and an overview of the program in each of the four years of study. The program, which includes the option of earning a college diploma at the end of the third year, is slated for introduction in the fall of 1997.

ABSTRACT

This article presents the results of a pilot-study conducted on a small sample of women with breast cancer and the members of their social support system. The purpose was to determine the potential link between the mental health of the breast cancer patient and their support system. Mental health was assessed with the SCL-90-R (Derogatis, 1977), a self-report scale composed of 90 items divided into nine categories, offering three global indicators of distress: the Global Severity Index (GSI); the Positive Symptom Distress Index (PSDI), and the Positive Symptom Total (PST). The SCL-90-R was distributed to a sample of 14 subjects: seven women treated for breast cancer and seven significant others (social support). The results led to the definition of symptoms such as hostility, phobic anxiety and psychosis specific to either the woman or the support system.
