ABSTRACT

Although the determinants of individuals' happiness have been widely examined in the literature, little is known regarding whether and how food safety perception affects farmers' happiness. To fill this research gap, this paper examines the impact of food safety perception on happiness among Chinese farmers, utilizing open-access data collected through the Chinese Social Survey project in 2013, 2017 and 2021. This study focuses on Chinese farmers as the research subject, attempting to analyze the "happiness code" from the perspective of food safety, which supplements the literature on happiness and provides reference for protecting the rights of low-income groups and promoting food safety strategies in developing countries. To address sample selection bias, this paper employs the recursive bivariate ordered probit (RBOP) model and conditional mixed process (CMP) method. The results reveal that the perception of food safety exerts a positive and statistically significant impact on farmers' happiness in China. In addition, food safety perception is more important among middle-aged and elderly farmers and among those with higher education. Thus, the policy makers should continue to make up for the shortcomings of rural food safety work and extend regulatory measures to rural areas. They also need to take efforts to strengthen food safety promotion, enhance farmers' safety awareness, and safeguard farmers' "safety on the tongue".

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of glucocorticoids (GCs) in agricultural soils has raised concerns due to their high polarity, widespread biological effects in vertebrates, and their potential to disrupt vital processes such as glucose metabolism and immune function. This study investigated the sorption and transport dynamics of three GCs, namely cortisone (COR), prednisolone (PNL), and triamcinolone acetonide (TCA) in five soil-water systems (S1-S5 systems). The sorption data of the GCs were fitted to a linear sorption model (R2 = 0.95-0.99), with organic carbon (OC) normalized sorption coefficients ranging from 2.26 ± 0.02 to 3.36 ± 0.02. The sorption magnitudes (Kd) of the GCs exhibited a nearly linear correlation with their corresponding octanol-water partition coefficients (logKow) in the S1-S3 systems. However, some deviations from linearity were observed in the S4 and S5 systems. Furthermore, a strong correlation was observed between the Kd values of the GCs and the OC% of the soils. These data indicated that specific and hydrophobic partitioning interactions governed the sorption of GCs onto soils. The transport data of the GCs were fitted to a two-site nonequilibrium model using the CXTFIT program (R2 = 0.82-0.98). The retardation factor (R) for each GC exhibited a positive correlation with the OC% and clay contents of soils. Additionally, the relationships between the logR values and logKow values of the GCs deviated slightly from linear correlation in most columns. These results indicated that specific interactions in the columns were more pronounced compared to the batch systems. An initial field-scale simulation demonstrated that frequent precipitation can facilitate the dilution and vertical transport of the GCs through soil profiles. The transport potential of the GCs was affected by the properties and soils and GCs. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the transport potential and associated environmental risks of GCs in soil-water systems.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effect of public health education (PHE) on migrant workers' health status in China, using the data collected from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey project. The analysis employs a probit model, whose results suggest that, in general, PHE has a statistically significant and positive impact on migrant workers' self-rated health status and exerts a negative impact on their incidence rate of daily diseases. We also utilize the conditional mixed process method to address the potential endogenous issue. Further analyses reveal that there are significant differences in the impacts of different modes of PHE on migrant workers' health status, among which the mode of health knowledge lectures plays the most prominent role. Nonetheless, an additional analysis indicates that in addition to PHE, other public health services, such as the establishment of health records, also have a significant effect on the promotion of migrant workers' health status. A disaggregated analysis reveals that this impact is heterogeneous among different generations, genders as well as those with different income levels. The findings shed light on the importance of promoting equal access to public health services.

ABSTRACT

Acidosis is a hallmark of ischemic stroke and a promising neuroprotective target for preventing neuronal injury. Previously, genetic manipulations showed that blockade of acid-sensing ion channel 1a (ASIC1a)-mediated acidotoxicity could dramatically alleviate the volume of brain infarct and restore neurological function after cerebral ischemia. However, few pharmacological candidates have been identified to exhibit efficacy on ischemic stroke through inhibition of ASIC1a. In this work, we examined the ability of a toxin-inspired compound 5b (C5b), previously found to effectively inhibit ASIC1a in vitro, to exert protective effects in animal models of ischemic stroke in vivo. We found that C5b exerts significant neuroprotective effects not only in acid-induced neuronal death in vitro but also ischemic brain injury in vivo, suggesting that ASIC1a is a druggable target for therapeutic development. More importantly, C5b is able to cross the blood brain barrier and significantly reduce brain infarct volume when administered intravenously in the ischemic animal model, highlighting its systemic availability for therapies against neurodegeneration due to acidotoxicity. Together, our data demonstrate that C5b is a promising lead compound for neuroprotection through inhibiting ASIC1a, which warrants further translational studies.

ABSTRACT

The hydrogen peroxide generation system was used to analyze the scavenging activity of hydrogen peroxide by Liropes Radix from different origins by HPLC-UV-CL. The UV-CL fingerprints of Liropes Radix from different origins were evaluated,and the HPLC-UV and LC-CL fingerprints were systematically analyzed and evaluated. The results showed that the ether fractions of Liriope spicata var. prolifera and L. muscari had good scavenging activity of hydrogen peroxide,and the total activity of different origins varied greatly,while the similar samples had similar activities. The total antioxidant activity of L. muscari is higher than that of L. spicata var.prolifera. The similarity analysis of the two fingerprints was carried out by two different analytical methods. The chemical fingerprints and the active fingerprints have different characteristics. The contribution of each fingerprint to the total peak area and total activity is also different. There are significant differences between the two different fingerprint clustering results.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: Clinical trials have reported conflicting results about whether celecoxib plus chemotherapy improves outcomes over chemotherapy alone in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis comparing the primary and secondary endpoints of treatment with celecoxib plus chemotherapy vs. chemotherapy alone in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. RESULTS: Six eligible trials (1181 patients) were selected from the 206 studies that were identified initially. A significant difference, favouring celecoxib plus chemotherapy over chemotherapy alone, was observed in the overall response rate [odds ratio (OR) 1.34; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08, 1.67; P = 0.009). However, there was no difference in the 1-year survival rate (OR 1.08; 95% CI 0.86, 1.35; P = 0.512), clinical benefit (OR 1.05; 95% CI 1.88, 1.25; P = 0.613), complete response (OR 0.77; 95% CI 0.39, 1.51; P = 0.446) or partial response (OR 1.22; 95% CI 0.92, 1.63; P = 0.163). Toxicity did not differ significantly with the exception of the occurrence of leucopenia and thrombocytopenia. CONCLUSIONS: Celecoxib plus chemotherapy appeared to improve the overall response rate compared with chemotherapy alone in the treatment of patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Further prospective randomized controlled trials are now needed.
