ABSTRACT

Marine animal forest (MAF) are animal-dominated megabenthic communities that support high biodiversity levels and play key roles in ecosystem functioning. However, there is limited data available in Patagonian waters related to the presence of these vulnerable benthic communities. We report a monospecific MAF of Errina antartica in Angostura Tomms, which represents the southernmost known living MAF of this species. With coverages reaching up to 28.5% of the substrate from 1.23 m to, at least, 33 m depth is the shallowest stylasterid assemblage described worldwide to date. The size of the colonies ranged from 0.14 to 15.8 cm, with small colonies (< 10 cm) being the most abundant (99%). We hypothesize that this MAF might correspond to a recent colonization of a space, extending its distribution range towards shallower areas or it could be an assemblage formed at the limit of the species' distribution in which the environmental conditions are not optimal for the major development of the colonies. Additionally, results showed that habitats structured by three-dimensional sessile invertebrate such as E. antarctica showed higher values of species richness and alpha diversity than non-biogenic habitats. Analyses were based on 297 photos taken at 22 different sites in the western Strait of Magellan, along vertical transects from 5 to 25 m depth. Our study highlights the importance of the benthic communities existing in Patagonian waters, evidencing the need to act actively to ensure their maintenance.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study aimed to provide evidence of the domestic benefits of introducing an integrative genomic analysis from the One Health approach in the national surveillance of Salmonella enterica between 1997-2017 in Colombia. Methods: Data on Salmonella from clinical laboratory-based surveillance between 1997-2017 and from a national cross-sectional study at chicken retail stores in Colombia were compared using a phenotypic, molecular, and genomic approaches. Additional analysis by serovar using single nucleotide polymorphism was developed to increase the resolution of the relatedness between the interfaces. Results: Locally, the diversity and pathogenic factors of the prevalent S. enterica serovars associated with foodborne disease in Colombia were described using laboratory, pulse field gel electrophoresis, and whole genome sequencing data. For example, the resolution of pulse field gel electrophoresis allowed the description of two main foodborne clusters of Salmonella Enteritidis isolates, which were expanded to eight foodborne clades using whole genome sequencing. Likewise, virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance determinants, and mobile genetic elements that converged in the foodborne clades should be considered a public health concern in Colombia. All results by serovar were compiled in an interactive easy to share report. Conclusion: Whole genome sequencing is a technology that provides a precise assessment of emerging foodborne risks such as the Salmonella foodborne clades, but it requires an integrative and continued collaboration between the stakeholders across the One Health sectors to promote appropriated actions and policies in public health.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding has multiple nutritional, immunological and psychological benefits, as well as a positive influence on the development of the stomatognathic system. OBJECTIVES: The present study attempted to determine the relationship between the duration of breastfeeding and the development of non-nutritive habits, and transversal and vertical occlusal alterations in preschool children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 155 preschoolers aged 2-5 years from 3 public schools in Lima, Peru. The sample was divided into 2 groups with regard to the duration of breastfeeding: group A (n = 50) included infants that had been breastfed for up to 6 months; and group B (n = 105) included infants that had been breastfed for 6-12 months. Two trained and calibrated dentists evaluated each group, and clinically determined the presence or absence of transversal or vertical occlusal alterations. Likewise, the children's parents or caregivers were consulted to determine the development of non-nutritive habits. RESULTS: A significant association was found between breastfeeding duration and the development of the oral breathing habit; groups A and B showed a prevalence of 30.0% and 16.2%, respectively (p = 0.048). Likewise, breastfeeding duration affected the appearance of oral breathing (OR (odds ratio) = 0.84; 95% CI (confidence interval): 0.74-0.96; p = 0.011). Furthermore, the use of a bottle for more than 24 months significantly influenced the appearance of oral habits (OR = 3.55; 95% CI: 1.20-10.55; p = 0.022) and open bite (OR = 12.12; 95% CI: 1.16-126.31; p = 0.037). CONCLUSIONS: Breastfeeding duration of 6-12 months was shown to be a protective factor in preventing the appearance of oral breathing. Posterior crossbite (PCB), open bite and deep bite seemed not to be influenced by breastfeeding duration. However, the use of a bottle for more than 24 months significantly influenced the appearance of anterior open bite.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To calculate the association between the type and duration of breastfeeding and the deciduous molar relationship and facial characteristics of preschoolers aged 2 to 6 years. STUDY DESIGN: This crosssectional study included 160 pre-schoolers aged 2 to 6 years old, enrolled in the 2019 academic year from 3 public schools in Data collection involved two phases. The first phase consisted in determining the facial type, anteroposterior and vertical profile, facial dimensions, and the molar relationship between primary second molars. The second phase included interviews with the parents or legal guardians. Children with exclusive breastfeeding and with mixed/artificial feeding (breastfeeding and bottle-feeding, or exclusive artificial bottle-feeding) were included. Chi-square test, t-test, multiple linear regression, and binary logistic regression tests were applied (p<0.05). RESULTS: The facial length, width, and the lower third were greater in the exclusive breastfeeding group than in the mixed/artificial feeding group (3.74mm, p=0.002; 2.06mm, p=0.047; and 2.94mm, p=0.015; respectively). In addition, children with breastfeeding for more than six months showed greater facial length, facial width and lower third (3.20mm, p=0.038; 3.68mm, p=0.006; and 3.57mm, p=0.026; respectively). The duration of exclusive breastfeeding influenced facial width, noting an increase of 3.32mm (p=0.011) if a pre-schooler had exclusive breastfeeding for more than six months. CONCLUSION: There were no significant associations between type and duration of breastfeeding and the molar terminal plane, facial type, or profile. However, facial dimensions were greater in the exclusive breastfeeding group, and when breastfeeding was longer than six months.

ABSTRACT

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The impact of direct mail order sales of positive airway pressure (PAP) devices, accentuated by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, on PAP adherence in patients with obstructive sleep apnea remains unclear. In this study we compared the impact of different modes of continuous positive airway pressure delivery on adherence and daytime symptoms. We hypothesized that adherence would not be affected by remote PAP setup, aided by telehealth technology. METHODS: Three groups were studied: 1) standard group PAP setup (3-4 people); 2) direct home shipment of PAP, followed by telehealth interactions; 3) direct home shipment of PAP, during the COVID-19 pandemic where delivery choice was removed. Demographics, sleepiness, PAP data, and insurance information were also compared. RESULTS: A total of 666 patients were studied in 3 groups. 1) Standard group PAP setup had 225 patients and adherence with PAP (% of nights used more than 4 hours) was 65.3 ± 2.1%. 2) Direct home shipment of PAP group had 231 patients, and adherence was 54.2 ± 2.4%. 3) Direct mailed PAP units during the COVID-19 pandemic group had 210 patients, and adherence was 55.9 ± 2.5%. Adherence was lower in both groups receiving home shipments compared to those in groups in-center (analysis of variance, Tukey, P = .002). Discontinuation of PAP was less in the in-center group setup patients (χ2 = 10.938 P ≤ .001). CONCLUSIONS: Patients receiving direct home PAP shipments had lower adherence and were more likely to discontinue PAP compared to standard in-person setup. ABSTRACT

Tinnitus is an auditory condition that causes humans to hear a sound anytime, anywhere. Chronic and refractory tinnitus is caused by an over synchronization of neurons. Sound has been applied as an alternative treatment to resynchronize neuronal activity. To date, various acoustic therapies have been proposed to treat tinnitus. However, the effect is not yet well understood. Therefore, the objective of this study is to establish an objective methodology using electroencephalography (EEG) signals to measure changes in attentional processes in patients with tinnitus treated with auditory discrimination therapy (ADT). To this aim, first, event-related (de-) synchronization (ERD/ERS) responses were mapped to extract the levels of synchronization related to the auditory recognition event. Second, the deep representations of the scalograms were extracted using a previously trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture (MobileNet v2). Third, the deep spectrum features corresponding to the study datasets were analyzed to investigate performance in terms of attention and memory changes. The results proved strong evidence of the feasibility of ADT to treat tinnitus, which is possibly due to attentional redirection.

ABSTRACT

(AU)

The concept of dental caries has evolved over time, passing through a variety of theories in order to explain its etiology. The purpose of this literature review is to address theories related to the origin of dental caries and the ways in which concepts have been modified following research. Multiple theories have been developed, one of the most notable of which has been that of Willoughby Miller, a leading researcher, who proposed the "chemical-parasitic theory" for the demineralization of enamel as a result of the acids produced by microorganisms in the oral cavity. This led to the "ecological triad" theory, which identified sucrose as a cariogenic agent, establishing the infectious-contagious character of the isease and identifying S. mutans as the main causative agent. new theories have also emerged, as this article will explain, allowing us to develop our current concepts associated with dental caries disease and its development.
