ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT There is no specific age when the vault of the feet is completely formed. The objective of this study was to analyze the footprint morphology and obtain the Chippaux-Smirak Index in a Mexican population to identify the type of feet and its prevalence. A database of images of the soles of both feet was analyzed. The database contained images of 1,014 persons between 2 and 73 years old from Guanajuato state, Mexico. Moreover, a literature review was performed to identify the type of feet in the Mexican population. It was observed that less than 17 % of the population have cavus foot (p= 0.018). Furthermore, less than 25 % of the population between 17 and 73 years have flatfoot 3 (p= 0.0079) in the left foot. Also, only nine articles related to the type of foot in the Mexican population were found, but most of them were performed on young population. The formation of the medial arc could be beyond the first decade of life and the relatively high prevalence of flatfoot in adult life should be studied. Finally, the results found can be useful for orthopedists, physiotherapists, clinicians, and parents who are concerned about the foot health of their children.


RESUMEN No hay una edad específica en la que la bóveda de los pies esté completamente formada. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la morfología de la huella de los pies y obtener el Índice de Chippaux-Smirak en una población mexicana para identificar el tipo de pie y su prevalencia. Se analizó una base de datos de imágenes de las plantas de ambos pies. La base de datos contenía imágenes de 1,014 personas de entre 2 y 73 años del estado de Guanajuato, México. Además, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica para identificar el tipo de pie en la población mexicana. Se observó que menos del 17 % de la población tiene pie cavo (p= 0,018). Además, menos del 25 % de la población entre 17 y 73 años tiene pie plano 3 (p= 0,0079) en el pie izquierdo. Además, se encontraron 9 artículos relacionados con el tipo de pie en población mexicana, pero la mayoría de ellos fueron desarrollados en población joven. La formación del arco medial podría estar más allá de la primera década de vida. Se encontró una prevalencia relativamente alta de pie plano en la vida adulta que debe ser estudiada. Finalmente, los resultados encontrados pueden ser útiles para ortopedistas, fisioterapeutas, médicos y padres preocupados por la salud de los pies de sus hijos.

ABSTRACT

The kinematic assessment of the upper limbs in breast cancer (BC) survivors is one of the most common procedures to determine the recovery process after BC surgery. However, the methodology used is heterogeneous, finding various evaluation methods, which makes it difficult to compare results between studies. The objective of this review was to identify the technical features of the kinematic evaluation methods used in patients with mastectomy for BC. A literature review was conducted to search in electronic databases, such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, Clinical Key, Google Scholar, and Scopus. A total of 641 articles were obtained. After screening the title and the summary of the investigations, 20 manuscripts were kept for a deeper analysis. Different methodologies were found for the analysis of the kinematics of the upper limbs. Eight (40%) articles used the optoelectronic system, nine (45%) used the electromagnetic system, and three (15%) used other optoelectronic systems to assess shoulder kinematics. Each investigation studied different variables such as the type of surgery, the evaluation time, the age of the patients, the rehabilitation protocol, and so on. This makes the comparison among studies difficult, and the recovery process of the patients cannot be easily determined. In conclusion, the interpretation of the movement of the upper limbs should be easy to understand for oncologists, physiotherapists, clinicians, and researchers.

ABSTRACT

The two-dimensional phase unwrapping problem (PHUP) has been solved with discrete Fourier transforms (FTs) and many other techniques traditionally. Nevertheless, a formal way of solving the continuous Poisson equation for the PHUP, with the use of continuous FT and based on distribution theory, has not been reported yet, to our knowledge. The well-known specific solution of this equation is given in general by a convolution of a continuous Laplacian estimate with a particular Green function, whose FT does not exist mathematically. However, an alternative Green function called the Yukawa potential, with a guaranteed Fourier spectrum, can be considered for solving an approximated Poisson equation, inducing a standard procedure of a FT-based unwrapping algorithm. Thus, the general steps for this approach are described in this work by considering some reconstructions with synthetic and real data.

ABSTRACT

Visualizing two variables in the fluid flow requires a complex optical system to fulfill such a purpose. Furthermore, in these applications, measuring the temperature fields of the fluid is sometimes necessary. In this work, we use a color digital camera to record in one snapshot shadowgraph and two direction sensitivity Schlieren images. Furthermore, the Schlieren images obtained are used to measure temperature fields. The optical system, as main components, employs an rgb Light Emitting Diode (LED), two knife edges represented by shortpass and longpass ultra-thin filters, and a color digital camera. The results of this study show that shadowgraph images are contaminated with the crosstalk effect, and correction against it was applied. On the other hand, the reached resolution of the optical system to measure temperature values is approximately one degree.

ABSTRACT

The inclusion of the Internet of Things (IoT) in greenhouses has become a fundamental tool for improving cultivation systems, offering information relevant to the greenhouse manager for decision making in search of optimum yield. This article presents a monitoring system applied to an aeroponic greenhouse based on an IoT architecture that provides user information on the status of the climatic variables and the appearance of the crop in addition to managing the irrigation timing and the frequency of visual inspection using an application developed for Android mobile devices called Aeroponics Monitor. The proposed IoT architecture consists of four layers: a device layer, fog layer, cloud layer and application layer. Once the information about the monitored variables is obtained by the sensors of the device layer, the fog layer processes it and transfers it to the Thingspeak and Firebase servers. In the cloud layer, Thingspeak analyzes the information from the variables monitored in the greenhouse through its IoT analytic tools to generate historical data and visualizations of their behavior, as well as an analysis of the system's operating status. Firebase, on the other hand, is used as a database to store the results of the processing of the images taken in the fog layer for the supervision of the leaves and roots. The results of the analysis of the information of the monitored variables and of the processing of the images are presented in the developed app, with the objective of visualizing the state of the crop and to know the function of the monitoring system in the event of a possible lack of electricity or a service line failure in the fog layer and to avoid the loss of information. With the information about the temperature of the plant leaf and the relative humidity inside the greenhouse, the vapor pressure deficit (VPD) in the cloud layer is calculated; the VPD values are available on the Thingspeak server and in the developed app. Additionally, an analysis of the VPD is presented that demonstrates a water deficiency from the transplanting of the seedling to the cultivation chamber. The IoT architecture presented in this paper represents a potential tool for the study of aeroponic farming systems through IoT-assisted monitoring.

ABSTRACT

After mastectomy, women might lose mobility and develop kinematic changes in the shoulder. The objective of this research was to compare the kinematics of the glenohumeral joint in women, before and after unilateral breast cancer surgery. This was a longitudinal study with a pre- and post-evaluation design; in total, 15 Mexican women who had a mastectomy for breast cancer and who received a physical therapy program after surgery were evaluated. Flexion-extension and abduction-adduction movements of the glenohumeral joint were evaluated (15 days before and 60 days after mastectomy). For the kinematic analysis of the glenohumeral joint, an optoelectronic motion capture system was used to monitor 41 reflective markers located in anatomical landmarks. There was no significant difference in the range of motion of the glenohumeral joint when comparing pre- and post-mastectomy, flexion-extension (p = 0.138), and abduction-adduction (p = 0.058). Furthermore, patients who received chemotherapy (53%) before mastectomy were more affected (lower range of motion) than those who did not receive it. There were no significant differences in the kinematics of the glenohumeral joint after mastectomy in this group of patients who received a physical therapy program after surgery. Moreover, patients who received chemotherapy treatment before breast cancer surgery tended to have a lower range of motion than those who did not receive it. Therefore, it is necessary for the physical rehabilitation team to attend to these patients even before the mastectomy.

ABSTRACT After breast cancer surgery, women might develop musculoskeletal impairments that affect movements of the upper limbs and reduce the quality of life. The objective of this research was to analyze the effect of the unilateral breast cancer surgery on the kinematics of the shoulder and the electrical activity of the upper trapezius, middle deltoid and pectoralis major muscles. Eight right-handed female participants, mean age 46.5 ± 5.45 years and mean body mass 71.21 ± 13.33 kg, with unilateral breast cancer surgery, without breast reconstruction and without lymphedema symptoms were included in the research. Flexion-extension and abduction-adduction movements of the shoulder were evaluated with infrared cameras and the electrical activity was measured using surface electromyography. The statistical analysis of the direction angles showed a significant reduction of the flexion-extension and abduction-adduction movements in the affected side in most of the participants (p<0.05). The muscle electrical activity did not present a significant difference between the two sides for the flexion-extension and abduction-adduction movements (p>0.05). The results suggest that the surgical procedure could compromise the range of motion of the affected side. Furthermore, this research contributes to clarify the effect of the surgical procedure in the range of motion of the upper limbs.


RESUMEN Después de la cirugía de cáncer de mama, las mujeres pueden desarrollar deficiencias musculoesqueléticas que afectan los movimientos de las extremidades superiores y reducen la calidad de vida. El objetivo de esta investigación fue analizar el efecto de la cirugía unilateral del cáncer de mama sobre la cinemática del hombro y la actividad eléctrica de los músculos trapecio superior, deltoides medio y pectoral mayor. Se incluyeron ocho participantes diestras, edad promedio 46.5 ± 5.45 años y masa promedio 71.21 ± 13.33 kg, con cirugía de cáncer de mama unilateral, sin reconstrucción mamaria y sin síntomas de linfedema. Los movimientos de flexión-extensión y abducción-aducción del hombro se evaluaron con cámaras infrarrojas y se midió la actividad eléctrica mediante electromiografía de superficie. El análisis estadístico de los ángulos de dirección mostró una reducción significativa del movimiento de flexión-extensión y abducción-aducción en el lado afectado en la mayoría de las participantes (p<0.05). La actividad eléctrica muscular no presentó diferencia significativa entre los dos lados para los movimientos de flexión-extensión y abducción-aducción (p>0.05). Los resultados sugieren que el procedimiento quirúrgico podría comprometer el rango de movimiento del lado afectado. Además, esta investigación contribuye a esclarecer el efecto del procedimiento quirúrgico en el rango de movimiento de los miembros superiores.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we present a panoramic digital holographic system for the first time capable of obtaining 3D information of a quasi-cylindrical object by using a conical mirror. The proposed panoramic digital holographic system is able to scan the entire surface of the object to determine the amplitude and phase simultaneously. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of analyzing quasi-cylindrical objects in a short time (0.5 s) with a single camera and a minimum number of optical components. In addition, it can be applied to determine not only topographic measurement of the cylindrical surface but also measurements of radial deformations. Experimental results are presented at different magnifications, thus illustrating its capabilities and versatility.

ABSTRACT

When recovering smooth phases by phase unwrapping algorithms, many noniterative algorithms are available. However, normally those algorithms offer approximations of the current phase that cannot be accurate enough. This is because the majority of them are based on global approaches instead of local ones. Although smooth estimations are not often expected in phase reconstructions for real applications, a smooth initial guess could be useful for robust iterative techniques. Therefore, based on the most recent local polynomial approaches, we propose a simple least-squares fitting of the partial derivatives of the phase, normally estimated from the wrapped operator, by considering local polynomial models of the phase up to the third order. Synthetic and real data of wrapped phases are considered in our work.

ABSTRACT

In order to recover the holographic object information, a method based on the recording of two digital holograms, not only at different planes but also in a slightly off-axis scheme, is presented. By introducing a π-phase shift in the reference wave, the zero-order diffracted term and the twin image are removed in the frequency domain during the processing of the recorded holograms. We show that the zero-order elimination by the phase-shifted holograms is better than working with weak-order beam and average intensity removal methods. For recording experimentally two π-shifted holograms at different planes slightly off-axis, a single cube beam splitter is used. Computer simulations and experimental results, carried out to validate our proposal, show a high accuracy of π/14 that can be comparable with phase-shifting digital holography. For high fringe spacing, our proposal could be applied in electron holography, avoiding high voltage in a biprism.

ABSTRACT

In the Hartmann test, a wave aberration function W is estimated from the information of the spot diagram drawn in an observation plane. The distance from a reference plane to the observation plane, the Hartmann-plane distance, is typically chosen as z=f, where f is the radius of a reference sphere. The function W and the transversal aberrations {X,Y} calculated at the plane z=f are related by two well-known linear differential equations. Here, we propose two nonlinear differential equations to denote a more general relation between W and the transversal aberrations {U,V} calculated at any arbitrary Hartmann-plane distance z=r. We also show how to directly estimate the wavefront surface w from the information of {U,V}. The use of arbitrary r values could improve the reliability of the measurements of W, or w, when finding difficulties in adequate ray identification at z=f.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we present a new method to reduce the shot noise in phase imaging of digital holograms. A spatial averaging process of phase images reconstructed at different reconstruction distances is performed, with the reconstruction distance range being specified by the numerical focus depth of the optical system. An improved phase image is attained with a 50% shot noise reduction. We use the integral of the angular spectrum as a reconstruction method to obtain a single-object complex amplitude that is needed to perform our proposal. We also show the corresponding simulations and experimental results. The topography of a homemade TiO2 stepwise of 100 nm high was measured and compared with the atomic force microscope results.
