ABSTRACT

Fe-modified biochars have been widely used in removal of Cr(VI) from water due to the resulting modified surface functional groups and magnetization property. However, few studies have synthetically investigated modification methods and synthesis parameters on the improvement of the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by Fe-modified biochars. Herein, 10 types of corn straw-based magnetic biochars were produced using pre-modification and post-modification methods with various modifier ratios, and the highest heating temperature (HHT). Cr(VI) removal results suggest that the removal efficiency of pre-modified biochars ranged from 50.7 to 98.6%, which was much higher than that of post-modified (6.6-21.6%) and unmodified biochars (0.4-7.6%). The effect of synthesis methods on Cr(VI) adsorption was in the following order: Fe-modification method > modifier ratio > HHT. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results of three types of pre-modified biochars were well fitted with the pseudo-second-order model (R 2 > 0.99) and the Langmuir adsorption model (R 2 > 0.99), respectively, indicating the surface homogeneity of the pre-modified biochars and unilayer chemisorptions of Cr(VI). Characterization results show that iron oxides or zerovalent iron particles were successfully deposited onto the surface of biochars and magnetism was introduced. A good Pearson correlation (r = -0.9694) between the removal efficiency and pH value in modified biochar suggests that the lower pH value may offer more positive charges and promote electrostatic attraction. Therefore, the dominant mechanism for enhanced Cr(VI) adsorption on pre-modified biochar was electrostatic attraction, resulting from its distinguished acidity nature. Our findings provide new insights into the high-efficiency removal of Cr(VI) onto Fe-modified magnetic biochars and will benefit future design of more efficient magnetic biochars.

Our study presents the first evidence on how target animacy impacts on manual laterality in the Hylobatidae and contributes to filling the knowledge gap between monkeys and great apes in primate evolution of emotional lateralization. Eleven captive individuals of northern white-cheeked gibbons (Nomascus leucogenys) were chosen as focal subjects. There were significantly more ambipreferent individuals than left/right-handed individuals for both inanimate (χ2(1, n = 11) = 7.364, p = 0.007) and animate (χ2(1, n = 11) = 4.455, p = 0.035) targets, meaning no significant group-level hand preference. The right hand was more frequently used than the left hand for inanimate targets whereas the left hand was more frequently used than the right hand for animate targets, although the interaction between target animacy and hand use was not significant (proportion: F1, 10 = 0.283, p = 0.607; rate: F1, 10 = 0.228, p = 0.643). Our findings in N. leucogenys could not fully support either the tool use theory or the right hemisphere hypothesis.

ABSTRACT

Investigations on manual laterality in non-human primates can help clarify human evolutionary origins of hand preference and cerebral cognition. Although body posture can influence primate hand preference, investigations on how posture affects hylobatid manual laterality are still in their infancy. This study focused on how spontaneous bipedal behavioral tasks affect hand preference in Hylobatidae. Ten captive northern white-cheeked gibbons (Nomascus leucogenys) were chosen as focal subjects. Unimanual grooming during sitting posture and supported bipedal posture were applied as behavioral tasks. The gibbons displayed a modest tendency on left-hand preference during sitting posture and right-hand preference during supported bipedal posture, although no group-level hand preference was detected for either posture. From the sitting to supported bipedal posture, 70% of individuals displayed different degrees of right-side deviation trends. The strength of manual laterality in the supported bipedal posture was higher than that in the sitting posture. We found significant sex differences in manual laterality during supported bipedal posture but not during sitting posture. Thus, to a certain degree, bipedal posture in N. leucogenys facilitates stronger hand preference, elicits a rightward trend in manual laterality, and produces sex-specific hand preference.

BACKGROUND: Adult patients with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) often incur large costs, but their outcomes are poor. Currently, there is lack of a comprehensive quantitative approach to predict patient prognoses. METHODS: A total of 73 adult patients with HIE participated in this prospective, observational study. Clinical assessments, laboratory tests, and electrophysiological examinations were conducted within 3 days after HIE occurred. Logistic regression model was used to identify independent factors associated with patient outcomes. RESULTS: After a 6-month follow-up, 44 (61.1%) patients survived, 28 (38.9%) patients died, and one patient was lost to follow-up. The level of blood calcium and lactate, the presence of electroencephalography reactivity, and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score were significantly associated with the patient's outcome. Based on the regression coefficients from logistic regression analysis, we constructed a scoring system (CEGL; C: calcium, E: EEG reactivity, G: GCS, L: lactate) to predict the possibility of a patient's death. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.91 (P < 0.001, 95% CI [0.87-0.95]) with a specificity of 97.7% and a positive predictive value of 97.4%. CONCLUSION: CEGL score can provide clinicians useful information for assessment of patient prognosis within 6 months after HIE.
