ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between long working hours and the risk of mortality has been debated in various countries. This study aimed to investigate the association between long working hours and all-cause mortality in a large population-based cohort in China. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study (N=10 269) used a large, nationally representative data set [the China Health and Nutrition Surveys (CHNS)] from 1989 to 2015. Long working hours (≥55 hours per week) were compared to standard working hours (35-40 hours per week). The outcome measure was all-cause mortality. Hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause mortality was calculated from Cox proportional hazards regression models, with stratified analyses to assess differences in mortality risk among subgroups. RESULTS: Among the participants, 411 deaths (3.52 per 1000 person-years) occurred during a median follow-up of 11.0 (range 4.0-18.0) years. After adjusting for covariates, long working hours were associated with a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality [HR 1.49, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.02-2.18]. Stratified analyses revealed that this association was present only among men (HR 1.78, 95% CI 1.15-2.75) and smoking participants (HR 1.57, 95% CI 1.05-2.57). CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence of an association between long working hours and all-cause mortality, which is specifically observed among men and smokers. Targeted interventions should be implemented to reduce excessive working hours and identify individuals at elevated risk, with support from labor organizations, policymakers, and employers.

ABSTRACT

Using first-principle calculations combined with Boltzmann transport theory, we investigate the biaxial strain effect on the electronic and phonon thermal transport properties of a 1 T (CdI2-type) structural TiS2 monolayer, a recent experimental two-dimensional (2D) material. It is found that the electronic band structure can be effectively modulated and that the band gap experiences an indirect-direct-indirect transition with increasing tensile strain. The band convergence induced by the tensile strain increases the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor, while the lattice thermal conductivity is decreased under the tensile strain due to the decreasing group velocity and the increasing scattering chances between the acoustic phonon modes and the optical phonon modes, which together greatly increase the thermoelectric performance. The figure of merit can reach 0.95 (0.82) at an 8 percent tensile strain for the p-type (n-type) doping, which is much larger than that without strain. The present work suggests that the TiS2 monolayer is a good candidate for 2D thermoelectric materials, and that biaxial strain is a powerful tool with which to enhance thermoelectric performance.

ABSTRACT

The 2H (MoS2-type) phase of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) has been extensively studied and exhibits excellent electronic and optoelectronic properties, but the high phonon thermal conductivity is detrimental to the thermoelectric performances. Here, we use first-principles methods combined with Boltzmann transport theory to calculate the electronic and phononic transport properties of 1T (CdI2-type) SnSe2 monolayer, a recently realized 2D metal dichalcogenide semiconductor. The calculated band gap is 0.85 eV, which is a little larger than the bulk value. Lower phonon thermal conductivity and higher power factor are obtained in 1T-SnSe2 monolayer compared to 2H-TMDCs monolayers. The low phonon thermal conductivity (3.27 W mK-1 at room temperature) is mainly due to the low phonon frequency of acoustic modes and the coupling of acoustic modes with optical modes. We also find that the p-type has better thermoelectric performance than the n-type, and the figure of merit within p-type can reach 0.94 at 600 K for 1T-SnSe2 monolayer, which is higher than those of most 2H-TMDCs monolayers, making 1T-SnSe2 monolayer a promising candidate for thermoelectric applications.

ABSTRACT

Based on microarray data comparing gene expression of fibroblast donor cells and bovine somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) and in vivo produced (AI) blastocysts, a group of genes including several transcription factors was selected for evaluation of transcript abundance. Using SYBR green-based real-time polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) the levels of POU domain class 5 transcription factor (Oct4), snail homolog 2 (Snai2), annexin A1 (Anxa1), thrombospondin (Thbs), tumor-associated calcium signal transducer 1 (Tacstd1), and transcription factor AP2 gamma (Tfap2c) were evaluated in bovine fibroblasts, oocytes, embryos 30 min postfusion (SCNT), 12 h postfertilization/activation, as well as two-cell, four-cell, eight-cell, morula, and blastocyst-stage in vitro fertilized (IVF) and SCNT embryos. For every gene except Oct4, levels of transcript were indistinguishable between IVF and SCNT embryos at the blastocyst stage; however, in many cases levels of these genes during stages prior to blastocyst differed significantly. Altered levels of gene transcripts early in development likely have developmental consequences downstream. These results indicate that experiments evaluating gene expression differences between control and SCNT blastocysts may underestimate the degree of difference between clones and controls, and further offer insights into the dynamics of transcript regulation following SCNT.

ABSTRACT

The objectives of the present study were to: (1) clone horses using adult cumulus cells; and (2) determine whether the cumulus cell donor affected the outcome. In vivo-matured cumulus-oocyte complexes were obtained using transvaginal ultrasound-guided follicle aspiration; oocytes were used as cytoplasts, whereas cumulus cells (from one of three different mares) were used as donor cells. Immediately following nuclear transfer and activation procedures, cloned embryos were transferred surgically to the oviduct of recipient mares (n = 2-5 embryos per recipient) that had ovulated within 24 h prior to the transfer. An initial pregnancy examination was performed between Days 14 and 16 (Day 0 = surgery); subsequent examinations were then performed every 7-10 days. A total of 136 follicles were aspirated in 96 mares, from which 72 oocytes were recovered (53%). Sixty-two cloned embryos were transferred to recipient mares, which resulted in seven (11.3%) ultrasonographically detectable conceptuses between Days 14 and 16. All seven conceptuses were lost spontaneously between Days 16 and 80. Cumulus cells from Mare 160 tended (P = 0.08) to result in a higher embryo survival rate than cumulus cells from Mare 221 (4/17 v. 1/25 respectively). To our knowledge, this is the first report documenting the establishment of cloned equine pregnancies derived from adult cumulus cells.
