ABSTRACT

Imaging studies of subthreshold depression (StD) have reported structural and functional abnormalities in a variety of spatially diverse brain regions. However, there is no consensus among different studies. In the present study, we applied a multimodal meta-analytic approach, the Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE), to test the hypothesis that StD exhibits spatially convergent structural and functional brain abnormalities compared to healthy controls. A total of 31 articles with 25 experiments were included, collectively representing 1001 subjects with StD. We found consistent differences between StD and healthy controls mainly in the left insula across studies with various neuroimaging methods. Further exploratory analyses found structural atrophy and decreased functional activities in the right pallidum and thalamus in StD, and abnormal spontaneous activity converged to the middle frontal gyrus. Coordinate-based meta-analysis found spatially convergent structural and functional impairments in StD. These findings provide novel insights for understanding the neural underpinnings of subthreshold depression and enlighten the potential targets for its early screening and therapeutic interventions in the future.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have explored the neural bases of forgiveness, however, the neural associations of decisional and emotional forgiveness remain unclear. Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and functional connectivity (FC) measured by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) were used to investigate the neural associations of individual differences in decisional and emotional forgiveness among healthy volunteers (256 participants, 85 males). The results of the ReHo analysis showed that decisional forgiveness was positively correlated with the left inferior parietal lobule (IPL). Furthermore, emotional forgiveness was positively correlated with the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and left supramarginal gyrus (SMG). The results of the FC analysis showed that decisional forgiveness was positively associated with the FC strength between the left IPL and left middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and negatively correlated with the FC strength among the left IPL, right superior temporal gyrus (STG), and left SMG. Furthermore, there was a significant positive correlation between emotional forgiveness and FC strength between the left SMG and right IPL. These findings suggest an association between decisional and emotional forgiveness and spontaneous brain activity in brain regions related to empathy, emotion regulation, and cognitive control.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to create a mathematical model to precalculate the acreage change in the abdominal median sagittal plane (ac-AMSP) of patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) for whom two-level pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) was planned. METHODS: A single-centre retrospective review of prospectively collected data was conducted among 11 adults with AS. Acreage of the abdominal median sagittal plane (a-AMSP) was performed. The distances and angles between the osteotomy apexes, anterosuperior edge of T12, xiphoid process, superior edge of the pubis, and anterosuperior corner of the sacrum were measured on preoperative thoracolumbar computed tomography. A mathematical model was created using basic trigonometric functions in accordance with the abdominal parameters. Planned osteotomized vertebra angles (POVAs) were substituted into the mathematical model, and the predictive ac-AMSP (P-AC) was obtained. A paired sample t test was performed to determine the differences between the P-AC and actual ac-AMSP (A-AC) and between the predictive acreage change rate (P-CR) and actual acreage change rate (A-CR). RESULTS: The mean age and GK were 44.4 ± 8.99 years and 102.9° ± 19.17°, respectively. No significant difference exists between A-CR and P-CR via mathematical modeling (p > 0.05). No statistically significant difference existed between POVA and actual osteotomized vertebra angles (AOVA) (p > 0.05). A statistically significant difference was observed between preoperative and postoperative measurements of LL, SVA, and GK variables (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The novel mathematical model was reliable in predicting the ac-AMSP in AS patients undergoing two-level PSO.

ABSTRACT

Although previous studies have found relationships between anger, forgiveness, and well-being, none have examined whether forgiveness mediates the relationship between trait anger and subjective well-being. To address this gap, this study constructed and tested a relevant moderated mediating model. We also considered the moderating effects of the COVID-19 lockdown situation, which has indirectly deteriorated well-being. The participants included 1,274 individuals who were recruited in April 2022. In sum, the results showed negative relationships between the trait anger and forgiveness and well-being, with a positive association between forgiveness and well-being. Moreover, forgiveness mediated the association between trait anger and subjective well-being, whereas the lockdown situation regulated the effects of trait anger on forgiveness and subjective well-being; specifically, forgiveness and well-being were more susceptible to trait anger among individuals under the lockdown situation. These findings suggest that forgiveness mediates the relationship between trait anger and well-being, while trait anger negatively predicts forgiveness and subjective well-being. Furthermore, the lockdown situation increases the negative predictive effects of anger on forgiveness and subjective well-being. ABSTRACT

Objective: To introduce a scout view scanning technique of back-forward bending CT (BFB-CT) in simulated surgical position for evaluating the remaining real angle and flexibility of thoracolumbar kyphosis secondary to old osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture. Methods: A total of 28 patients with thoracolumbar kyphosis secondary to old osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture who met the selection criteria between June 2018 and December 2021 were included in the study. There were 6 males and 22 females with an average age of 69.5 years (range, 56-92 years). The injured vertebra were located at T 10-L 2, including 11 cases of single thoracic fracture, 11 cases of single lumbar fracture, and 6 cases of multiple thoracolumbar fractures. The disease duration ranged from 3 weeks to 36 months, with a median of 5 months. All patients received examinations of BFB-CT and standing lateral full-spine X-ray (SLFSX). The thoracic kyphosis (TK), thoracolumbar kyphosis (TLK), local kyphosis of injured vertebra (LKIV), lumbar lordosis (LL), and the sagittal vertical axis (SVA) were measured. Referring to the calculation method of scoliosis flexibility, the kyphosis flexibility of thoracic, thoracolumbar, and injured vertebra were calculated respectively. The sagittal parameters measured by the two methods were compared, and the correlation of the parameters measured by the two methods was analyzed by Pearson correlation. Results: Except LL ( P>0.05), TK, TLK, LKIV, and SVA measured by BFB-CT were significantly lower than those measured by SLFSX ( P<0.05). The flexibilities of thoracic, thoracolumbar, and injured vertebra were 34.1%±18.8%, 36.2%±13.8%, and 39.3%±18.6%, respectively. Correlation analysis showed that the sagittal parameters measured by the two methods were positively correlated ( P<0.001), and the correlation coefficients of TK, TLK, LKIV, and SVA were 0.900, 0.730, 0.700, and 0.680, respectively. Conclusion: Thoracolumbar kyphosis secondary to old osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture shows an excellent flexibility and BFB-CT in simulated surgical position can obtain the remaining real angle which need to be corrected surgically.

ABSTRACT

Strict carbon emission regulations are set with respect to countries' territorial seas or shipping activities in exclusive economic zones to meet their climate change commitment under the Paris Agreement. However, no shipping policies on carbon mitigation are proposed for the world's high seas regions, which results in carbon intensive shipping activities. In this paper, we propose a Geographic-based Emission Estimation Model (GEEM) to estimate shipping GHG emission patterns on high seas regions. The results indicate that annual emissions of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) in shipping on the high seas reached 211.60 million metric tonnes in 2019, accounting for about one-third of all shipping emissions globally and exceeding annual GHG emissions of countries such as Spain. The average emission from shipping activities on the high seas is growing at approximately 7.26% per year, which far surpasses the growth rate of global shipping emission at 2.23%. We propose implementation of policies on each high seas region with respect to the main emission driver identified from our results. Our policy evaluation results show that carbon mitigation policies could reduce emissons by 25.46 and 54.36 million tonnes CO2-e in the primary intervention stage and overall intervention stage, respectively, with 12.09% and 25.81% reduction rates in comparison to the 2019 annual GHG emissions in high seas shipping.

ABSTRACT

Highway bridges in coastal areas are seriously affected by the marine environment, while most of the existing test methods for bridge-reinforced concrete beams considering both corrosion and fatigue factors are carried out in an alternating manner, which cannot reflect the actual service conditions of the bridge structure. This paper focuses on an experimental study of the coupled influence of reinforcement corrosion and fatigue loading in reinforced concrete T-shaped beams. A novel loading test device that can realize the corrosion-fatigue coupling effect is designed, and then six reinforced concrete T-shaped beams are fabricated and tested. For the corrosion-fatigue coupling test beams, the variation law of beam cracks, failure modes, steel strain development law, load-deflection relationship, and fatigue life are analyzed and compared with that of the simple fatigue test beams. The test results show that the cracks of the test beam develop continuously with the fatigue loading times under the corrosion-fatigue coupling environment. The fatigue failure modes are all brittle fractures of the main steel bars, which present the shape of uneven oblique section tearing. The new testing device and approach can provide direct insights into the interaction of reinforcement corrosion and cyclic loading on the fatigue behavior of T-shaped RC beams, which can be further used to understand the long-term performance of bridge structures under complex marine environments.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies found an association between mindfulness and forgiveness. However, the effects of self-construal on this association are still unclear. In the present study, self-reported forgiveness and a behavioral measure of forgiveness were used to explore the moderating effect of self-construal plays between mindfulness and forgiveness among 126 participants recruited based on their mindfulness scores. Results showed that participants with high level of mindfulness in the interdependent self-construal condition reported greater forgiveness and gave more money donations towards transgressors than those in the independent self-construal condition, while there is no significant difference between interdependent and independent self-construal groups among participants with low level of mindfulness. These findings suggest that self-construal moderates the relationship between mindfulness and interpersonal forgiveness.

ABSTRACT

Feature selection (FS) is a popular data pre-processing technique in machine learning to extract the optimal features to maintain or increase the classification accuracy of the dataset, which is a combinatorial optimization problem, requiring a powerful optimizer to obtain the optimum subset. The equilibrium optimizer (EO) is a recent physical-based metaheuristic algorithm with good performance for various optimization problems, but it may encounter premature or the local convergence in feature selection. This work presents a self-adaptive quantum EO with artificial bee colony for feature selection, named SQEOABC. In the proposed algorithm, the quantum theory and the self-adaptive mechanism are employed into the updating rule of EO to enhance convergence, and the updating mechanism from the artificial bee colony is also incorporated into EO to achieve appropriate FS solutions. In the experiments, 25 benchmark datasets from the UCI repository are investigated to verify SQEOABC, which is compared with several state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms and the variants of EO. The statistical results of fitness values and accuracy demonstrate that SQEOABC has better performance than the compared algorithms and the variants of EO. Finally, a real-world FS problem from COVID-19 illustrates the effectiveness and superiority of SQEOABC.

ABSTRACT

Forgiveness is a positive, prosocial manner of reacting to transgressions and is strongly associated with mental health and well-being. Despite recent studies exploring the neural mechanisms underlying forgiveness, a model capable of predicting trait forgiveness at the individual level has not been developed. Herein, we applied a machine-learning approach, connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM), with whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) to predict individual differences in trait forgiveness in a training set (dataset 1, N = 100, 35 men, 17-24 years). As a result, CPM successfully predicted individual trait forgiveness based on whole-brain rsFC, especially via the functional connectivity of the limbic, prefrontal and temporal areas, which are key contributors to the prediction model comprising regions previously implicated in forgiveness. These regions include the retrosplenial cortex, temporal pole, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC), dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, precuneus and dorsal posterior cingulate cortex. Importantly, this predictive model could be successfully generalized to an independent sample (dataset 2, N = 71, 17 men, 16-25 years). These findings highlight the important roles of the limbic system, PFC and temporal region in trait forgiveness prediction and represent the initial steps toward establishing an individualized prediction model of forgiveness.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to revise and test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Decisional and Emotional Forgiveness Scale. In experiment 1, 1171 college students and postgraduates were invited to complete the questionnaire that provides the data for this scale. The results from this, following exploratory factor analysis, showed that the factor loading values met the standards detailed in the past literature, except in the case of item C2. The results of confirmatory factor analysis (while excluding item C2) showed a good structure validity. Furthermore, it also showed that a four-factor model fit the data well and that the reliability values (including internal consistency and test-retest reliability) met the commonly held standards. Decisional and emotional forgiveness subfactors were significantly correlated with transgression-related interpersonal motivations and self-construal. Experiment 2 was conducted in order to further confirm the validity of the scale: the results of mediated analysis showed that emotional forgiveness and the path from decisional forgiveness to emotional forgiveness could mediate the relationship between stress perception and resilience. Thus, the revised Chinese version of the Decisional and Emotional Forgiveness Scale showed good reliability and validity within a Chinese sample, demonstrating its usability as an effective tool to evaluate college students' level of decisional and emotional forgiveness.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Systemic autoantibodies are important for the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases, but their roles in anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis are unknown. The purpose of our study is to investigate the characteristics and a prognosis of anti-NMDAR encephalitis with the prevalence of autoantibodies. Methods: Systemic autoantibodies were evaluated in 64 patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis and 14 patients with autoimmune encephalitis with other forms. Then, according to systemic autoantibodies, patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis were divided into an anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) positive group and an ANA negative group. The clinical outcome was assessed by a modified Rankin score at 12 months after the disease onset. Results: A total of 64 patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis were enrolled, of which 28.13% (18/64) were positive for ANA. The titers of a positive anti-NMDAR antibody in CSF (p = 0.041) and serum (p = 0.031) in the ANA-positive group were significantly higher than the ANA-negative group. Patients with ANA positive than those with ANA negative showed lower rates of headache (p = 0.047) and speech disorder (p = 0.049). The presence of ANA was associated with a worse clinical outcome at 12 months (p = 0.043). Conclusion: ANA was prevalent in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis, and associated with a worse prognosis and impaired neurological recovery.

ABSTRACT

The effects of digital Cognitive Behavior Therapy for insomnia (dCBT-i) on sleep quality have been previously demonstrated but the spillover effects on fatigue, flow (a state of immersion in activities of interest), and cognitive flexibility remain unclear. The current study examined the effectiveness of dCBT-i. A total of 97 college students (20.96 ± 1.87 years, 73.1% female students) were randomly selected from a shortlist and divided into sleep intervention (n = 39), conventional education (n = 37), and healthy control (n = 21) groups. Task switching paradigm, Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Flow Experience Scale (FES), and the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (CPSQI) were measured pre- and post-intervention. Results show that the sleep quality of the intervention group improved, and fatigue was relieved. Participants in the sleep intervention group had increased flow experience scores post-intervention and improved cognitive flexibility. The control group's sleep quality deteriorated and fatigue level increased. dCBT-i can not only achieve a significant improvement in sleep quality and reduce fatigue, but also improve learning abilities, quality of life, flow, and cognitive flexibility. Future research should pay attention to indicators such as work efficiency, sedative use, and the durability and stability of such effects.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) causes autophagy as well as inflammation; the latter is known to involve the high-mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1)/Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) axis. Here we investigated whether this axis may help mediate both the autophagy and inflammation associated with ICH. METHODS: ICH was induced by injecting autologous blood into Sprague-Dawley rats, followed in some cases by intracerebroventricular injection of short interfering RNA (siRNA) against HMGB1 or TLR4 at 6 h after ICH induction or by intraperitoneal injection of the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA) or autophagy activator rapamycin at 6, 24, and 48 h after ICH induction. Western blotting, immunohistochemistry or immunofluorescence was used to assess levels of HMGB1/TLR4 signaling pathway proteins as well as markers of autophagy (LC3B, Beclin1, Atg5) or inflammation (IL-1 beta, TNF-α). Numbers of apoptotic cells were determined using TUNEL staining. Changes in levels of these proteins were correlated with neurological deficits measured using the modified Neurological Severity Score. RESULTS: ICH caused HMGB1 to translocate from the nucleus into the cytoplasm, and it up-regulated expression of TLR4 and myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), and induced neurological deficits. Administering siRNA against HMGB1 or TLR4 reversed this up-regulation. Levels of markers of autophagy (LC3B, Beclin1, Atg5) or inflammation (IL-1 beta, TNF-α) were significantly higher 72 h after ICH than at baseline, as were the numbers of TUNEL-positive cells. Administering siRNA against HMGB1 or TLR4 markedly alleviated inflammation, and autophagy, apoptosis, and neurological deficits. Similarly, administering autophagy inhibitor 3-MA alleviated inflammation, apoptosis, and neurological deficits. Conversely, autophagy activator rapamycin exacerbated these effects of ICH. CONCLUSIONS: During the acute phase of ICH, the HMGB1/TLR4/MyD88 axis acts via autophagy to promote inflammation.

Purpose: The reported prevalence of abnormal findings by brain MRI varies from 11 to 83% among patients with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis. Here, we investigated the prevalence of abnormal MRI findings in Chinese patients and explored whether such findings are correlated with clinical outcomes. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed a consecutive series of 52 patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis admitted to our hospital. The patients were assigned to the "MRI-normal" or the "MRI-abnormal" group based on brain MRI after admission. The groups were compared in terms of clinicodemographic characteristics and scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) 3 and 12 months after admission. Results: Thirty-seven (71.15%) of the patients showed abnormalities on brain MRI; these patients were more likely to be men and showed abnormalities on electroencephalography. Patients who showed normal or abnormal MRI findings did not differ significantly in terms of clinical symptoms, rates of mortality or relapse, or mRS scores after 3 and 12 months. However, patients with abnormal MRI showed significantly lower MMSE scores than those with normal MRI after 3 and 12 months. Conclusions: We found high prevalence of abnormal MRI findings in our sample of Chinese patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis. We also found that the abnormal findings were associated with cognitive decline but not necessarily with mortality or functional outcomes in the short or long term.

ABSTRACT

In responding to interpersonal conflicts, forgiveness goes a long way. Past brain imaging studies have examined the activation patterns of forgiving responses. However, the individual differences in brain structures associated with decisional forgiveness and emotional forgiveness are not well understood. In this voxel-based morphometry study, participants (85 men, 210 women) completed the Decisional Forgiveness Scale (DFS) and the Emotional Forgiveness Scale (EFS) and underwent an anatomical magnetic resonance imaging scan. Higher DFS scores were associated with larger GM volumes in a cluster that included regions in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). Higher EFS scores were associated with larger GM volumes in a cluster that included regions in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the superior frontal gyrus (SFG), which were also associated with smaller GM volumes in a cluster that included regions in the left inferior parietal lobule (IPL). The associations between the identified regions and DFS scores and EFS scores were supported by the cross-validation test. In addition, the GMV of OFC, mPFC and SFG partially mediated the relationship between DFS and EFS. These results provide direct neuroanatomical evidence for an association between decisional and emotional forgiveness and brain regions which are critical for cognitive control, theory of mind and moral judgment.

The healthy development of railway container transport is an important part of railway freight transport and is key for promoting the green transformation of China's transport and supporting a new pattern of transport development. In this study, railway container handling station (RCHS) data, kernel density analysis, standard deviation ellipse, Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI), trend surface analysis (TSA), and R index were applied to examine the evolution characteristics of container transport patterns after the market-oriented reform of China's railway freight transport in 2013. The results are as follows: First, the overall scale growth trend is obvious, and the double-center effect of transport scale on the Bohai Rim region and Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Zone is evident, with the transport center of gravity moving northward. Second, the amount of attraction/occurrence is consistent in spatial distribution, and the aggregation effect of both is similar, essentially exhibiting a tendency of being high in the northwest and low in the southeast. Third, the pattern of "export-oriented in the north and import-oriented in the south" has taken shape; nearly half of cities in China have stable traffic functions, stable traffic supply, and demand relationships, and the change of functions shows that the industrial structure is constantly upgrading. This study elucidates the pattern of railway container transport in cities in China and provides empirical guidance for adjusting the functions of urban freight transport, thereby promoting the healthy development of urban freight transport and optimizing urban transport planning.

ABSTRACT

Endometritis is among the most common bovine uterine diseases; as a cause of infertility, it affects the progress of the cattle industry. In this study, we used a novel technique based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry for comparative metabolomics of uterine secretions in healthy cows and cows with endometritis, classified based on clinical symptoms. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses revealed significant differences between the two groups (n = 12). Compared with healthy uterine secretion samples, in the clinical endometritis samples, coumaric acid, benzoic acid, and equol were downregulated. However, l-phenylalanine, glutamine, succinic acid, linoleate, arachidonic acid, and other metabolites were upregulated, revealing variations between healthy cows and cows with endometritis (p < 0.05). This metabolomic approach may provide an in-depth understanding of endometritis pathobiology, along with a theoretical framework for the diagnosis and treatment of this bovine disease.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have shown that forgiveness is associated with the ability of self-control. However, whether self-control can modulate interpersonal forgiveness remains unclear. In the current study, we aimed to explore the relationship between self-control and the process of forgiveness using a behavioral measure of forgiveness during which participants distributed money between themselves and unknown others who had previously treated them fairly or unfairly in an adapted decision-making task. Seventy-two participants with low or high self-control were recruited based on their scores on the self-control scale (SCS). Results showed that participants exhibited increased anger and decreased happiness after experiencing unfair treatment. Participants with high self-control distributed more money to opponents who previously treated them unfairly compared with those with low self-control, whereas no such difference was observed to opponents who previously treated them fairly between the two groups. A significantly positive correlation was also found between the forgiveness rates and participants' self-control scores. These findings suggest that self-control modulates interpersonal forgiveness responses. Individuals with high self-control expressed an increased prosocial response toward people who previously offended them, which is similar to the process of forgiveness.
