ABSTRACT

Despite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on quasi-two-dimensional (Q-2D) perovskites being inexpensive and exhibiting high performance, defects still limit the improvement of electroluminescence efficiency and stability by causing nonradiative recombination. Here, an organic molecule, 1-(o-tolyl) biguanide, is used to simultaneously inhibit and passivate defects of Q-2D perovskites via in situ synchronous crystallization. This molecule not only prevents surface bromine vacancies from forming through hydrogen bonding with the bromine of intermediaries but also passivates surface defects through its interaction with uncoordinated Pb. Via combination of defect inhibition and passivation, the trap density of Q-2D perovskite films can be significantly reduced, and the emission efficiency of the film can be improved. Consequently, the corresponding LED shows an external quantum efficiency of 24.3%, and its operational stability has been increased nearly 15 times.

ABSTRACT

Here, a new narrow band gap non-fullerene small molecular acceptor (NFSMA) based on a dithieno-3,2-b:2',3'-dlpyrrole(DTP) unit, namely SNIC-F, was designed and synthesized. Due to the strong electron-donating ability of the DTP-based fused-ring core, SNIC-F showed a strong intramolecular-charge transfer (ICT) effect and thus gave a narrow band gap of 1.32 eV. Benefiting from the low band gap and efficient charge separation, when pairing with a copolymer PBTIBDTT, the device optimized by 0.5% 1-CN gave a high short circuit current (Jsc) of 19.64 mA cm-2. In addition, a high open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.83 V was obtained due to the near 0 eV highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) offset between PBTIBDTT and SNIC-F. As a result, a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.25% was obtained, and the PCE was maintained above 9.2% as the active layer thickness increased from 100 nm to 250 nm. Our work indicated that designing a narrow band gap NFSMA-based DTP unit and blending it with a polymer donor with small HOMO offset is an efficient strategy for achieving high performance OSCs.

ABSTRACT

Hypogonadism and obesity are primary features of Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS). Obesity is also an associated factor of central precocious puberty (CPP). The present report describes the case of a girl (age, 7 years and 6 months), with clinical manifestations of precocious puberty, progressive obesity, postaxial polydactyly, retinal degeneration and intellectual disability. The patient visited the clinic for the first time due to early breast development and progressive obesity. After 8 months of follow-up, the bone age had advanced almost 3 years, and the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test showed results that had changed from indicating pseudo precocious puberty to CPP. Whole-exome gene sequencing showed that there were two heterozygous mutations in the BBS type 10 (BBS10) gene, chr12:76739816(c.1949del) and chr12:76740374(c.1391C>G). The final diagnosis was of BBS10 and CPP. In order to protect the reproductive capacity of the patient, GnRH analogs were used for CPP treatment. After 15 months of treatment and follow-up, a physical examination revealed Tanner breast stage 1. Ultrasonography showed that the uterus and ovaries had reduced to their prepubertal size. In conclusion, the present report describes a case of CPP that occurred in a young girl with BBS10. We hypothesize that this was a prelude to gonad dysplasia, acting as a method for the self-protection of human reproductive function. However, more clinical data and molecular biological evidence are required to confirm the etiology and mechanism of this case.

ABSTRACT

Halide perovskites are emerging as promising candidates for white light solid state lighting. Nevertheless, there are still challenges of a high water stability, a tunable color temperature, and a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Herein, we report hydrophobic, electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl (-CF3)-modified phenethylamine lead bromide (PEA2PbBr4) with ultrahigh stability in water for >2 months, and the broadband white light emission is illustrated by self-trapped excitons attributed to exciton-phonon coupling that coordinate molecular vibration, lattice distortion, and electrostatic interaction. In particular, by Mn2+ doping, the emission color can be tuned from cold (10237 K) to warm (2406 K), and a greatly enhanced PLQY of ≤87.93% can be achieved. Furthermore, the perovskites also possess an excellent color rendering index (the highest is 94). A monocomponent white light-emitting diode with amazing CIE 1931 coordinates of (0.33, 0.32) is further assembled, demonstrating a luminance of 471.5 cd m-2 at 50 mA and good long-term operation stability after >2 months. This study of highly efficient and stable perovskites with high-quality white light emission will open up new opportunities in solid state lighting.

ABSTRACT

A highly crystalline tempered-glass-like perovskite grain structure with compressed surface lattice realized by a thermal-shocking fabrication is shown. The strained perovskite grain structure is stabilized by Cl- -reinforcing surface lattice and shows enhanced bonding energy and ionic activation temperature, which contributes to hysteresis-free operation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) at much higher temperature up to 363 K in thermal-shocking-processed MAPbClx I3- x (T-MPI). The PSCs can be fabricated by a high-speed fully air process without post-annealing based on the scalable bar-coating technique. Both high efficiency and stability are achieved in T-MPI PSC with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 22.99% and long-term operational stability with T80 lifetime exceeding 4000 h.

ABSTRACT

Fabrication of organic-metal-halide perovskite micro-nano array structures draws attention to the potential application in polarized light, high-resolution X-ray imaging, light-emitting diodes, and lasers. However, it is still challenging to achieve the growth of controllable long-range ordered nanostructure arrays by chemical solution-based techniques. Herein, controllable epitaxial growth of long-range ordered micro-nano arrays on MAPbI3 single crystal (SC) surface is reported. A hydrated intermediate phase is found that can effectively regulate in-plane and out-plane orientated growth, respectively. This is attributed to the regulation of growth thermodynamics by hydration 0D perovskite intermediate phase enabling free recombination of PbI42- octahedral cages. Further, it is found that the degree of hydration is the key to the realization of in-plane and out-plane growth. Meanwhile, polarization emission and amplified spontaneous emission property are observed in highly oriented nanorod arrays with potential applications in anti-counterfeiting polarized emission.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Previous studies have shown that prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) can improve the survival of patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC). PCI is recommended for patients who respond well to chemoradiotherapy. However, whether PCI could be extrapolated to the LS-SCLC patients in the modern era of MRI is unknown. This study aimed to explore the value of PCI in patients with LS-SCLC in the era of brain MRI. Methods: This study included 306 patients with LS-SCLC at the Cancer Hospital of China Medical University. All patients received brain MRI at diagnosis and after radiochemotherapy to exclude brain metastases. A propensity score matching was performed to reduce the influence of potential confounders. Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and recurrence failure types were compared between PCI and non-PCI groups. Results: Among the 306 eligible patients, 81 underwent PCI, and 225 did not. After propensity score matching, there was no statistical difference in baseline data between the two groups, with 75 patients in each group. PCI did not achieve OS (median OS: 35 vs. 28 months, p = 0.128) or PFS (median PFS: 15 vs. 10 months, p = 0.186) benefits. During follow-up, 30 patients (20.0%) developed brain metastases, including 13 patients (17.3%) in the PCI group and 17 patients (22.7%) in the non-PCI group. Regarding death as a competitive risk, patients who received PCI had a lower cumulative incidence of brain metastasis than those who did not (3 years: 14.7% vs. 22.7%; Gray's test, p = 0.007). Conclusions: When brain MRI was performed at diagnosis and pre-PCI, PCI could reduce the cumulative rate of brain metastases, but it did not achieve survival benefits for LS-SCLC patients.

ABSTRACT

Flexible perovskite solar cells (FPSCs) have attracted great attention due to their advantageous traits such as low cost, portability, light-weight, etc. However, mechanical stability is still the weak point in their practical application. Herein, we prepared efficient FPSCs with remarkable mechanical stability by a dynamic thermal self-healing effect, which can be realized by the usage of a supramolecular adhesive. The supramolecular adhesive, which was obtained by random copolymerization of acrylamide and n-butyl acrylate, is amphiphilic, has a proper glass transition temperature and a high density of hydrogen-bond donors and receptors, providing the possibility of thermal dynamic repair of mechanical damage in FPSCs. The adhesive also greatly improves the leveling property of the precursor solution on the hydrophobic poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)]amine (PTAA) surface. PSCs containing this adhesive achieve more than a 20 % power conversion efficiency (PCE) on flexible substrates and a 21.99 % PCE on rigid substrates (certified PCE of 21.27 %), with improved electron mobility and reduced defect concentration.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the survival outcomes of whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) compared to whole brain radiotherapy plus local radiation boost (WBRT + boost), and further identify whether higher biologically effective dose (BED) of WBRT + boost translates into a survival benefit in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients with brain metastasis (BM). METHODS: SCLC patients with BM from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2019, were retrospectively analyzed. Overall survival (OS) and intracranial progression-free survival (iPFS) were evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method and compared by the log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses of prognostic factors for OS were performed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. The cutoff value of BED was determined by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. RESULTS: Among the 180 eligible patients, 82 received WBRT + boost and 98 received WBRT. Both OS and iPFS in the WBRT + boost group were significantly superior to those in the WBRT group (median OS: 20 vs. 14 months, p = 0.011; median iPFS: 16 vs. 10 months, p = 0.003). At a cutoff value of 58.35 Gy in the WBRT + boost group, 52 for the high-BED (>58.35 Gy) group, 30 for the low-BED (≤58.35 Gy) group. High BED was significantly associated with improved OS and iPFS compared with low BED in the WBRT + boost group (median OS: 23 vs. 17 months, p = 0.002; median iPFS: 17 vs. 10 months, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with WBRT alone, WBRT + boost improved OS and iPFS in SCLC patients with BM. High BED (>58.35 Gy) for WBRT + boost may be a reasonable consideration for SCLC patients with BM.

ABSTRACT

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have exhibited bright prospects in high-sensitivity X-ray detection. However, they generally suffer from the severe field-driven polarization issue that remarkably deteriorates the detection performance. Here, it is demonstrated that the interfacial electrochemical reaction between Au electrodes and halogen in MAPbI3 single crystals (SCs) is the major source of the dark current polarization in the metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM)-structured perovskite X-ray detectors at the initial stage of biasing. By introducing the p- and n-type charge transport layers to isolate the electrodes from contacting the SC surface, the polarization is fully eliminated under a large electric field up to 1000 V cm-1 . Moreover, the resultant lateral p-i-n heterojunction suppresses the dark current of the devices by nearly 3 orders of magnitude as compared to the MSM counterparts and therefore enables a high sensitivity of 5.2 × 106  µC Gy-1 air cm-2 and a record low X-ray detection limit down to 0.1 nGyair s-1 . The excellent biasing stability and sensitivity of the devices allow to prepare the linear detector arrays for X-ray imaging applications.

ABSTRACT

The long-term operational stability of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), especially red PeLEDs with only several hours typically, has always faced great challenges. Stable ß-CsPbI3 nanocrystals (NCs) are demonstrated for highly efficient and stable red-emitting PeLEDs through incorporation of poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) (PMA) in synthesizing the NCs. The PMA can chemically interact with PbI2 in the precursors via the coupling effect between O groups in PMA and Pb2+ to favor crystallization of stable ß-CsPbI3 NCs. Meanwhile, the cross-linked PMA significantly reduces the PbCs anti-site defect on the surface of the ß-CsPbI3 NCs. Benefiting from the improved crystal phase quality, the photoluminescence quantum yield for ß-CsPbI3 NCs films remarkably increases from 34% to 89%. The corresponding red-emitting PeLEDs achieves a high external quantum efficiency of 17.8% and superior operational stability with the lifetime, the time to half the initial electroluminescence intensity (T50 ) reaching 317 h at a constant current density of 30 mA cm-2 .

In confronting the sudden epidemic of COVID-19, China and other countries have been under great deal of pressure to block virus transmission and reduce death cases. Fangcang shelter hospital, which is converted from large-scale public venue, is proposed and proven to be an effective way for administering medical care and social isolation. This paper presents the practice in information technology support for a Fangcang shelter hospital in Wuhan, China. The experiences include the deployment strategy of IT infrastructure, the redesign of function modules in the hospital information system (HIS), equipment maintenance and medical staff training. The deployment strategy and HIS modules have ensured smoothness and efficiency of clinical work. The team established a quick response mechanism and adhered to the principle of nosocomial infection control. Deployment of network and modification of HIS was finished in the 48 hours before patient admittance. A repair hotline and remote support for equipment and software were available whenever medical workers met with any questions. No engineer ever entered the contaminated areas and no one was infected by the coronavirus during the hospital operation. Up to now, Fangcang shelter hospital is adopted by many regions around the world facing the collapse of their medical systems. This valuable experience in informatization construction and service in Wuhan may help participators involving in Fangcang shelter hospital get better information technology support, and find more practical interventions to fight the epidemic.

ABSTRACT

In view of the increasing importance of sports to people and the impact of COVID-19 on people's lives, home-based exercise has become a popular choice for people to keep fit due to its unique advantages and its popularity is expected to keep growing in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the development direction of home-based exercise and put in the corresponding efforts. However, there is currently a lack of research on all aspects of home-based exercise. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effective sustainable development strategy of home-based exercise in China through a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) hybrid model. Thirteen factors corresponding to the SWOT analysis were identified through a literature review and expert opinions. The results show that in China the advantages and potential outweigh the weaknesses and threats of home-based exercise. Home-based exercise should grasp the external development opportunities and choose the SO development strategic type that combines internal strengths and external opportunities. As the core for the development of home-based exercise, this strategy should be given priority. To sum up, home-based exercise is believed to have a bright future.

RATIONALE: Chromosome karyotype analysis and SRY (sex determined region of Y chromosome) gene detection are routines for the diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency (GHD), but further whole exome gene sequencing occasionally leads to subversive results and unexpected conclusions. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a single case of a 7-year-old Chinese boy who had stunted growth since he was 1 year old. He was short in height (height Standard Deviation Score (SDS) was less than 2.9), bilateral scrotal dysplasia and delayed bone age. DIAGNOSIS: His growth hormone (GH) stimulation tests showed GHD. His karyotype analysis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses indicated a 46, XX disorder of sex development (DSD) without the presence of the SRY gene. Nevertheless, considering that female gonad was not observed in the chest and abdominal magnetic resonance imaging, the whole exome gene sequencing was performed. Sequencing data confirmed the presence of SRY gene sequence and two copies of chromosome X. Later, using different primer sequences for PCR, it showed that the SRY gene was positive. The final diagnosis was a rare case of "46, XX (SRY positive) testicular DSD with GHD". INTERVENTIONS: The boy's parents agreed to use recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) for GHD treatment, the starting dose was 0.035 mg / kg / day. But they disagreed with molecular diagnostics and genomic analysis of the Y chromosome. OUTCOMES: The boy was treated with rhGH for 3 months and his height increased by 2.2 cm. The patient will be followed-up until the end of his puberty. LESSONS: In summary, whole exome gene sequencing overturned the preliminary diagnosis results of karyotype analysis and SRY gene detection, and found that there may be a certain correlation between testicular DSD and GHD.

ABSTRACT

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) are recognized as the promising next-generation X-ray detection materials. However, the device performance is largely limited by the ion migration issue of OIHPs. Here, we reported a simple atomistic surface passivation strategy with methylammonium iodide (MAI) to remarkably increase the ion migration activation energy of CH3NH3PbI3 single crystals. The amount of MAI deposited on the crystal surface is finely regulated by a self-assemble process to effectively suppress the metallic lead defects, while not introducing extra mobile ions, which results in significantly improved dark current stability of the coplanar-structure devices under a large electric field of 100 V mm-1. The X-ray detectors hence exhibit a record-high sensitivity above 700,000 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 under continuum X-ray irradiation with energy up to 50 keV, which enables an ultralow X-ray detection limit down to 1.5 nGyair s-1. Our findings will allow for the dramatically reduced X-ray exposure of human bodies in medical imaging applications.
