ABSTRACT

The relation between polymer molecular chains arrangement and ice adhesion was studied at the molecular scale, and the energy states of water molecules on the poly(tetrafluoroethylene) surface were analyzed to explain the energy essence of ice adhesion. The ice adhesion on crystalline poly(tetrafluoroethylene) displayed a clear anisotropy phenomenon. Further research proved that the energy states of water molecules along the vertical direction of the molecular chains fluctuated regularly, and the water molecules in gaps between molecular chains were in the energy troughs, leading to the formation of energy traps. Water molecules needed more energy from outside to escape the energy traps, causing additional resistance to the ice movement and obvious increase of ice adhesion. Therefore, ice adhesion was closely related to the distribution of energy traps in the direction of ice removing, which mainly depended on the possibility of molecular chains perpendicularly arranged in the direction of ice removing.

ABSTRACT

Nowadays, variable preparation, forming and processing methods of fiber metal laminates are constantly developing to meet the requirements of different application fields, hence the characteristics and evolution of residual stresses under different manufacturing conditions deserve more attention. In this work, the evolution behaviors of curing residual stresses in GLARE under a hot-pressing condition were studied, and the residual stress reduction mechanism was also explained. Results suggested the FE prediction models of the entire cure process, verified by the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, were more precise than the traditional elastic model. Moreover, the stress evolution during the cure process mainly occurred in the cooling stage, in which the different coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of aluminum and GFRP played a major role. Meanwhile, curing shrinkage stress in the GFRP layer during the holding stage at curing temperature obviously influenced the final stress level. The residual stresses in GFRP layers differed by 9.6 MPa under a hot-pressing and autoclave condition, in which the convection heat transfer condition played a major role as it caused lower thermal stress in the holding stage and a smaller temperature gradient in the cooling stage. Considering this, a lower cooling rate could be a feasible way to obtain GLARE with lower residual stress under a hot-pressing condition.

ABSTRACT

The weak interface performance between metal and composite (IPMC) makes the composite materials susceptible to impact load. Aluminum/glass fiber/polypropylene (Al/Gf/PP) laminates were manufactured with the aluminum alloy sheets modified by nitrogen plasma surface treatment and the phosphoric acid anodizing method, respectively. FEM models of Al/Gf/PP laminates under low-velocity impact were established in ABAQUS/Explicit based on the generated data including the model I and II interlaminar fracture toughness. Low-velocity impact tests were performed to investigate the impact resistance of Al/Gf/PP laminates including load traces, failure mechanism, and energy absorption. The results showed that delamination was the main failure mode of two kinds of laminates under the impact energy of 20 J and 30 J. When the impact energy was between 40 J and 50 J, there were metal cracks on the rear surface of the plasma pretreated specimens, which possessed higher energy absorption and impact resistance, although the integrity of the laminates could not be preserved. Since the residual compressive stress was generated during the cooling process, the laminates were more susceptible to stretching rather than delamination. For impact energy (60 J) causing the through-the-thickness crack of two kinds of laminates, plasma pretreated specimens exhibited higher SEA values close to 9 Jm2/kg due to better IPMC. Combined with the FEM simulation results, the interface played a role in stress transmission and specimens with better IPMC enabled the laminates to absorb more energy.

ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a novel output-only structural damage indicator by incorporating the pole-based optimal subpattern assignment distance with autoregressive models to localize and relatively assess the severity of damages for sheared structures. Autoregressive models can model dynamic systems well, while their model poles can represent the state of the dynamic systems. Structural damage generally causes changes in the dynamic characteristics (especially the natural frequency, mode shapes and damping ratio) of structures. Since the poles of the autoregressive models can solve the modal parameters of the structure, the poles have a close relationship with the modal parameters so that the changes in the poles of its autoregressive model reflect structural damages. Therefore, we can identify the damage by tracking the shifts in the dynamic system poles. The optimal subpattern assignment distance, which is the performance evaluator in multi-target tracking algorithms to measure the metric between true and estimated tracks, enables the construction of damage sensitive indicator from system poles using the Hungarian algorithm. The proposed approach has been validated with a five-story shear-building using numerical simulations and experimental verifications, which are subjected to excitations of white noise, El Centro earthquake and sinusoidal wave with frequencies sweeping, respectively; the results indicate that this approach can localize and quantify structural damages effectively in an output-only and data-driven way.
