ABSTRACT

Background: Ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) following breast-conserving surgery (BCS) has been considered a risk factor for distant metastasis (DM). Limited data are available regarding the subsequent outcomes after IBTR. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the clinical course after IBTR and develop a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based predictive model for subsequent DM. Methods: We retrospectively extracted quantitative features from MRI to construct a radiomics cohort, with all eligible patients undergoing preoperative MRI at time of primary tumor and IBTR between 2010 and 2018. Multivariate Cox analysis was performed to identify factors associated with DM. Three models were constructed using different sets of clinicopathological, qualitative, and quantitative MRI features and compared. Additionally, Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to assess the prognostic value of the optimal model. Results: Among the 183 patients who experienced IBTR, 47 who underwent MRI for both primary and recurrent tumors were enrolled. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the independent prognostic factors were human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status [hazard ratio (HR) =5.40] and background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) (HR =7.94) (all P values <0.01). Furthermore, four quantitative MRI features of recurrent tumors were selected through the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method. The combined model exhibited superior performance [concordance index (C-index) 0.77] compared to the clinicoradiological model (C-index 0.71; P=0.006) and radiomics model (C-index 0.70; and P=0.01). Furthermore, the combined model successfully categorized patients into low- and high-risk subgroups with distinct prognoses (P<0.001). Conclusions: The clinicopathological and MRI features of IBTR were associated with secondary events following surgery. Additionally, the MRI-based combined model exhibited the highest predictive efficacy. These findings could be helpful in risk stratification and tailoring follow-up strategies in patients with IBTR.

ABSTRACT

Growing awareness acknowledges ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as an environmental risk factor for mental disorders, especially among older people. However, there remains limited evidence regarding which specific chemical components of PM2.5 may be more detrimental. This nationwide prospective cohort study included 22,126 middle-aged and older adult participants of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2011-2016), to explore the individual and joint associations between long-term exposure to various PM2.5 components (sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, organic matter, and black carbon) and depressive symptoms. The depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D-10). Using the novel quantile-based g-computation for multi-pollutant mixture analysis, we found that exposure to the mixture of major PM2.5 components was significantly associated with aggravating depressive symptoms, with the exposure-response curve exhibiting consistent linear or supra-linear shape without a lower threshold. The estimated weight index indicated that, among major PM2.5 components, only nitrate, sulfate, and black carbon significantly contributed to the exacerbation of depressive symptoms. Given the expanding aging population, stricter regulation on the emissions of particularly toxic PM2.5 components may mitigate the escalating disease burden of depression.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess efficacy and safety of apalutamide plus goserelin for androgen receptor (AR)-positive, unresectable or recurrent/metastatic salivary gland carcinoma (URM-SGC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was an open-label, single-arm, multicenter phase II study for patients with AR-positive URM-SGC. The primary endpoint was the overall response rate (ORR) by an independent central radiology review (ICRR) in the first 24 response evaluable patients who had been observed at least 24 weeks from study initiation (primary RE patients). The efficacy was to be declared when at least 8 of the 24 primary RE patients responded. RESULTS: 31 patients were enrolled. In the first 24 primary RE patients with a median follow-up of 7.4 months, confirmed ORR by ICRR was 25.0% (6/24 patients; 95%CI: 9.8%-46.7%; P =0.11 (one-sided)), which did not meet the predefined criteria of efficacy. Clinical benefit rate (ORR + rate of stable disease for at least 24 weeks) and median progression-free survival were 50.0% and 7.4 months, respectively. Both median duration of response and overall survival were not reached. Exploratory analyses showed a better ORR of 54.5% (6/11) in patients with AR-positivity ≥ 70% and no history of prior systemic therapy. Grade 3 or higher treatment-emergent adverse events were reported in 35.5% (11/31), which included skin rash, anemia, leukopenia, and cancer pain. CONCLUSIONS: Although this study did not meet the predefined efficacy criteria, apalutamide plus goserelin showed clinically meaningful efficacy in a subset of patients with AR-positive SGC and safety consistent with prior experience in prostate cancer.

ABSTRACT

Inferring prospective outcomes and updating behavior are prerequisites for making flexible decisions in the changing world. These abilities are highly associated with the functions of the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) in humans and animals. The functional specialization of OFC subregions in decision-making has been established in animals. However, the understanding of how human OFC contributes to decision-making remains limited. Therefore, we studied this issue by examining the information representation and functional interactions of human OFC subregions during inference-based decision-making. We found that the medial OFC (mOFC) and lateral OFC (lOFC) collectively represented the inferred outcomes which, however, were context-general coding in the mOFC and context-specific in the lOFC. Furthermore, the mOFC-motor and lOFC-frontoparietal functional connectivity may indicate the motor execution of mOFC and the cognitive control of lOFC during behavioral updating. In conclusion, our findings support the dissociable functional roles of OFC subregions in decision-making.

ABSTRACT

Exposure to ambient air pollution has significant adverse health effects; however, whether air pollution is associated with urological cancer is largely unknown. We conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis with epidemiological studies, showing that a 5 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure is associated with a 6%, 7%, and 9%, increased risk of overall urological, bladder, and kidney cancer, respectively; and a 10 µg/m3 increase in NO2 is linked to a 3%, 4%, and 4% higher risk of overall urological, bladder, and prostate cancer, respectively. Were these associations to reflect causal relationships, lowering PM2.5 levels to 5.8 µg/m3 could reduce the age-standardized rate of urological cancer by 1.5 ~ 27/100,000 across the 15 countries with the highest PM2.5 level from the top 30 countries with the highest urological cancer burden. Implementing global health policies that can improve air quality could potentially reduce the risk of urologic cancer and alleviate its burden.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The research intended to probe the connection between the risk of stroke and serum vitamin D levels. METHODS: Three electronic databases (Cochrane Library, EMBASE, PubMed) were searched according to the subject terms from inception until July 29, 2022, and retrieved researches were screened on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two investigators conducted the quality assessment and data extraction. Using Stata 16.0 software, a meta-analysis was conducted on the extracted data. FINDINGS: In total, 27 studies with 45,302 participants were included. Among these studies, 20 focused on stroke risk, while 7 examined stroke prognosis. According to the meta-analysis findings, it was observed that a higher stroke risk is connected to reduced levels of serum vitamin D. This association was reflected in a combined relative risk (RR) of 1 .28 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.15-1.42) and a worse prognosis after stroke (RR = 2.95, 95% CI: 1.90-4.60). Additional analysis indicated that no apparent relationship between a decrease in vitamin D and the probability of experiencing a hemorrhagic stroke was found. The RR found was 1.93 (95% CI: 0.95-3.95). On the other hand, it was observed that a reduction in serum vitamin D levels was linked to an elevated likelihood of developing an ischemic stroke. The RR identified was 1.72 (95% CI: 1.78-2.03). Moreover, a lower level of vitamin D in the bloodstream was associated with a more unfavorable prognosis for individuals who suffered from a stroke. The RR for this correlation was 2.95 (95% CI: 1.90-4.60). However, further research is required to confirm the above-mentioned findings. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, lower concentration vitamin D was found to be related to an increased risk of stroke, which could mainly be reflected in ischemic stroke patients but not in patients with hemorrhagic stroke. A lower serum vitamin D level was correlative with the poor prognosis of stroke.

ABSTRACT

Chemotherapy, as a conventional strategy for tumor therapy, often leads to unsatisfied therapeutic effect due to the multi-drug resistance and the serious side effects. Herein, we genetically engineered a thermal-responsive murine Ferritin (mHFn) to specifically deliver mitoxantrone (MTO, a chemotherapeutic and photothermal agent) to tumor tissue for the chemotherapy and photothermal combined therapy of colorectal cancer, thanks to the high affinity of mHFn to transferrin receptor that highly expressed on tumor cells. The thermal-sensitive channels on mHFn allowed the effective encapsulation of MTO in vitro and the laser-controlled release of MTO in vivo. Upon irradiation with a 660 nm laser, the raised temperature triggered the opening of the thermal-sensitive channel in mHFn nanocage, resulting in the controlled and rapid release of MTO. Consequently, a significant amount of reactive oxygen species was generated, causing mitochondrial collapse and tumor cell death. The photothermal-sensitive controlled release, low systemic cytotoxicity, and excellent synergistic tumor eradication ability in vivo made mHFn@MTO a promising candidate for chemo-photothermal combination therapy against colorectal cancer.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a pervasive, chronic sleep-related respiratory condition that causes brain structural alterations and cognitive impairments. However, the causal association of OSA with brain morphology and cognitive performance has not been determined. METHODS: We conducted a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationship between OSA and a range of neurocognitive characteristics, including brain cortical structure, brain subcortical structure, brain structural change across the lifespan, and cognitive performance. Summary-level GWAS data for OSA from the FinnGen consortium was used to identify genetically predicted OSA. Data regarding neurocognitive characteristics were obtained from published meta-analysis studies. Linkage disequilibrium score regression analysis was employed to reveal genetic correlations between OSA and related traits. RESULTS: Our MR study provided evidence that OSA was found to significantly increase the volume of the hippocampus (IVW ß (95% CI) = 158.997 (76.768 to 241.227), P = 1.51e-04), with no heterogeneity and pleiotropy detected. Nominally causal effects of OSA on brain structures, such as the thickness of the temporal pole with or without global weighted, amygdala structure change, and cerebellum white matter change covering lifespan, were observed. Bidirectional causal links were also detected between brain cortical structure, brain subcortical, cognitive performance, and OSA risk. LDSC regression analysis showed no significant correlation between OSA and hippocampus volume. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, we observed a positive association between genetically predicted OSA and hippocampus volume. These findings may provide new insights into the bidirectional links between OSA and neurocognitive features, including brain morphology and cognitive performance.

ABSTRACT

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) associated with Klebsiella pneumoniae poses a serious threat for inpatients. This study aimed to describe the genomic characteristics of K. pneumoniae causing UTI in a tertiary-care hospital in Beijing, China. Methods: A total of 20 K. pneumoniae strains collected from 2020 to 2021 were performed whole-genome sequencing. The Antibiotic susceptibility of 19 common antimicrobial agents was tested against all strains. The multi-locus sequence types (MLSTs) and serotypes were determined from the WGS data. De novo assemblies were used to identify resistance and virulence genes. The presence and characteristics of the plasmids were detected using hybrid assembly of long and short-read data. Results: These K. pneumoniae strains were clustered into nine sequence types (STs) and twelve K-serotypes. All the carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CRKP) strains acquired carbapenemase blaKPC-2 (n=7). Two CRKP strains exhibited increased resistance to Polymyxin B with MIC ≥ 4 mg/L due to insertion of an IS5-like sequence in the mgrB gene, and they were also involved in a transmission event in Intensive Care Unit. Long-read assemblies identified many plasmids co-carrying multiple replicons. Acquisition of a new IncM2_1 type blaCTX-M-3 positive plasmid was observed after transfer from ICU to neurovascular surgery by comparing the two strains collected from the same patient. Conclusion: K. pneumoniae is a significant pathogen responsible for urinary tract infections. The ST11-KL47 strain, prevalent at our hospital, exhibits a combination of high drug resistance and hypervirulence. It is imperative to enhance ongoing genomic surveillance of urinary tract infection-causing pathogens.

ABSTRACT

With allergic rhinitis (AR) on the rise globally, there has been a growing focus on the role of environmental pollutants in the onset of AR. However, the potential mechanisms by how and which these pollutants exacerbate AR conditions remain unknown. This panel study of 49 patients diagnosed with AR over one year aimed to assess the individual and combined effects of short-term exposure to multiple ambient pollutants on oxidative stress, symptoms, and quality of life among patients with AR. All participants underwent four repeated assessments of health conditions and personal environmental exposures (PM2.5, O3, SO2, and NO2) over warm and cold seasons during 2017-2018. We evaluated two oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde [MDA], and superoxide dismutase [SOD]) via nasal lavage. We collected information on self-reported symptoms and quality of life using the Rhinitis Symptom Scale (SRS), the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ) through in-person interviews. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to evaluate the joint effects of pollutant mixture and identify key contributors. The results revealed a significant association of the pollutant mixture when all four pollutants were at or above their median levels, with increased oxidative stress. This was evidenced by elevated MDA and reduced SOD. We found a joint detrimental effect of the pollutant mixture on AR symptoms with a strong association with increased SRS scores, but a non-significant positive association with VAS and RQLQ scores. PM2.5, O3, and SO2 presented as the potentially primary contributors to the adverse health effects associated with the pollutant mixture in Taiyuan city. Patients with AR exposed to short-term air pollutant mixture are more likely to have greater nasal symptoms and worse quality of life from increased oxidative stress and reduced antioxidant capacity. Further research is warranted to better elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

Cobalt-free (Co-free) and nickel-rich (Ni-rich) cathode materials have attracted significant attention and undergone extensive studies due to their affordability and superior energy density. However, the commercialization of these Co-free materials is hindered by challenges such as cation disorder, irreversible phase changes, and inadequate high-voltage performance. To overcome these challenges, a Co-free ternary cathode material of Mg/Al double-pillared LiNiO2 (NMA) synthesized via a wet-coating and lithiation-sintering technique is proposed. Fundamental studies reveal that Mg and Al have the potential to form a distinctive double-pillar structure within the layered cathode, enhancing its structural stability. To be specific, the strategic placement of Mg and Al in Li and Ni layers, respectively, effectively reduces Li+/Ni2+ disorder and prevents irreversible phase transitions. Additionally, the inclusion of Mg and Al refines the primary grains and compacts the secondary grains in the cathode material, reducing stress from cyclic usage and preventing material cracking, thereby mitigating electrolyte erosion. As a result, NMA demonstrates exceptional electrochemical performance under a high charge cutoff voltage of 4.6 V. It maintains 70% of initial specific capacity after 500 cycles at 1 C and exhibits excellent rate performance, with a capacity of 162 mAh g-1 at 5 C and 149 mAh g-1 at 10 C. As a whole, the produced NMA achieves a high structural stability in cases of excessive delithiation, providing a groundbreaking solution for the development of cost-effective and high-energy-density cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT

The phospholipase A2 (PLA2) superfamily consists of lipolytic enzymes that hydrolyze specific cell membrane phospholipids and have long been considered a central hub of biosynthetic pathways, where their lipid metabolites exert a variety of physiological roles. A misregulated PLA2 activity is associated with mainly inflammatory-derived pathologies and thus has shown relevant therapeutic potential. Many natural and synthetic anti-inflammatory drugs (AIDs) have been proposed as direct modulators of PLA2 activity. However, despite the specific chemical properties that these drugs share in common, little is known about the indirect modulation able to finely tune membrane structural changes at the precise lipid-binding site. Here, we use a novel experimental strategy based on differential scanning calorimetry to systematically study the structural properties of lipid membrane systems during PLA2 cleavage and under the influence of several AIDs. For a better understanding of the AIDs-membrane interaction, we present a comprehensive and comparative set of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our thermodynamic results clearly demonstrate that PLA2 cleavage is hindered by those AIDs that significantly reduce the lipid membrane cooperativity, while the rest of the AIDs oppositely tend to catalyze PLA2 activity to different extents. On the other hand, our MD simulations support experimental results by providing atomistic details on the binding, insertion, and dynamics of each AID on a pure lipid system; the drug efficacy to impact membrane cooperativity is related to the lipid order perturbation. This work suggests a membrane-based mechanism of action for diverse AIDs against PLA2 activity and provides relevant clues that must be considered in its modulation.

ABSTRACT

Two efficient and convenient methods for the synthesis of 3-alkylideneoxindoles are described in this paper. The InCl3/TfOH-mediated tandem Knoevenagel condensation-deacylation sequence of various 2-oxindoles with 1,3-diones or acetoacetate furnished 3-alkylideneoxindoles in satisfactory to excellent yields (up to >99% yield). Employing the reaction system, the condensation of 2-oxindoles with ketones or aldehydes also proceeded smoothly to produce 3-alkylideneoxindoles. This protocol can be amenable to scale up. The effect of acids on this condensation reaction and intermolecular competition experiments were investigated to understand the aspect of the reaction.

ABSTRACT

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is a valuable technique for identifying pathogens. However, conventional mNGS requires the separate processing of DNA and RNA genomes, which can be resource- and time-intensive. To mitigate these impediments, we propose a novel method called DNA/RNA cosequencing that aims to enhance the efficiency of pathogen detection. DNA/RNA cosequencing uses reverse transcription of total nucleic acids extracted from samples by using random primers, without removing DNA, and then employs mNGS. We applied this method to 85 cases of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI). Influenza virus was identified in 13 cases (H1N1: seven cases, H3N2: three cases, unclassified influenza type: three cases) and was not detected in the remaining 72 samples. Bacteria were present in all samples. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii were detected in four influenza-positive samples, suggesting coinfections. The sensitivity and specificity for detecting influenza A virus were 73.33% and 95.92%, respectively. A κ value of 0.726 indicated a high level of concordance between the results of DNA/RNA cosequencing and SARI influenza virus monitoring. DNA/RNA cosequencing enhanced the efficiency of pathogen detection, providing a novel capability to strengthen surveillance and thereby prevent and control infectious disease outbreaks.

ABSTRACT

Airway invasion is common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and can cause serious complications. However, a PD-related dysphagic pattern has not been clearly elucidated. In this study, 53 patients with early to moderate PD were enrolled to undergo a videofluoroscopic study of swallowing evaluation (VFSS) and a battery of neuropsychological assessments. A set of VFSS variables (three visuoperceptual, nine temporal, and six spatial) were measured. The main effects of bolus viscosity and volume on airway invasion were calculated. Statistical analyses were performed to determine key kinematic factors of airway invasion for swallowing each bolus type. Airway invasion frequency was significantly higher for liquid boluses (liquid vs. pudding P < 0.001; liquid vs. honey P = 0.006). Laryngeal vestibule closure reaction time (LVCrt) was the key kinematic factor of airway invasion for 3 ml liquid swallow (P = 0.040), anterior displacement of hyoid bone was the key kinematic factor for both 5 ml and 10 ml liquid swallows (P = 0.010, 0.034, respectively). Male sex and advanced Hoehn and Yahr stage were significantly related to reduced anterior displacement of hyoid bone. These results reveal the dysphagic pattern related to PD, demonstrating that prolonged LVCrt and reduced anterior displacement of hyoid bone are two crucial kinematic factors contributing to airway invasion during the liquid swallow. In addition, hyoid bone dysfunction was correlated with disease severity and male sex. Our findings warrant further investigation of the pathophysiological mechanism of dysphagia in PD and would guide clinical intervention.

ABSTRACT

Particulate matter (PM) exposure may be associated with male semen quality. Besides, PM exposure induces up and down levels of trace metals in tissues or organs. The levels of trace metals in semen are critical for adverse male semen quality. This study aims to evaluate the concentrations of seminal-level trace metals in fertile men and assess its associations with PM exposure and to explore the mediation role of trace metals in seminal plasma plays in the relationship between PM exposure and semen quality. Total 1225 fertile men who participated in a cohort study from 2014 to 2016 were finally recruited. Multivariate linear regression was applied to explore associations between each two of PM exposure, trace metals and semen parameters. 1-year PM2.5 and PM10 exposure levels were positively associated with arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), lanthanum (La), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd) but negatively associated with vanadium (V), magnesium (Mg), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba) in semen. It was also found that most of the elements were associated with total sperm number, followed by sperm concentration. Redundancy analysis (RDA) also determined several strong positive correlations or negative correlations between 1-year PM exposure and trace metals. Mediation analysis found that trace metals had a potentially compensatory or synergetic indirect effect on the total effect of the association between 1-year PM exposure and semen quality. The retrospective cohort study provides long-term PM exposure that may cause abnormal semen quality by affecting seminal plasma element levels.

ABSTRACT

Photochemical ozone (O3) formation in the atmospheric boundary layer occurs at both the surface and elevated altitudes. Therefore, the O3 formation sensitivity is needed to be evaluated at different altitudes before formulating an effective O3 pollution prevention and control strategy. Herein, we explore the vertical evolution of O3 formation sensitivity via synchronous observations of the vertical profiles of O3 and proxies for its precursors, formaldehyde (HCHO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), using multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) in urban areas of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), and Pearl River Delta (PRD) regions in China. The sensitivity thresholds indicated by the HCHO/NO2 ratio (FNR) varied with altitude. The VOC-limited regime dominated at the ground level, whereas the contribution of the NOx-limited regime increased with altitude, particularly on heavily polluted days. The NOx-limited and transition regimes played more important roles throughout the entire boundary layer than at the surface. The feasibility of extreme NOx reduction to mitigate the extent of the O3 pollution was evaluated using the FNR-O3 curve. Based on the surface sensitivity, the critical NOx reduction percentage for the transition from a VOC-limited to a NOx-limited regime is 45-72%, which will decrease to 27-61% when vertical evolution is considered. With the combined effects of clean air action and carbon neutrality, O3 pollution in the YRD and PRD regions will transition to the NOx-limited regime before 2030 and be mitigated with further NOx reduction.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the digestive function, urea utilization ability, and bacterial composition changes in rumen microbiota under high urea (5% urea in diet) over 23 days of continuous batch culture in vitro. Methods: The gas production, dry matter digestibility, and bacterial counts were determined for the continuously batch-cultured rumen fluid (CRF). The changes in fermentation parameters, NH3-N utilization efficiency, and microbial taxa were analyzed in CRF and were compared with that of fresh rumen fluid (RF), frozen rumen fluid (FRF, frozen rumen fluid at -80°C for 1 month), and the mixed rumen fluid (MRF, 3/4 RF mixed with 1/4 CRF) with in vitro rumen fermentation. Results: The results showed that the dry matter digestibility remained stable while both the microbial counts and diversity significantly decreased over the 23 days of continuous batch culture. However, the NH3-N utilization efficiency of the CRF group was significantly higher than that of RF, FRF, and MRF groups (p < 0.05), while five core genera including Succinivibrio, Prevotella, Streptococcus, F082, and Megasphaera were retained after 23 days of continuous batch culture. The NH3-N utilization efficiency was effectively improved after continuous batch culture in vitro, and Streptococcus, Succinivibrio, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, p.251.o5, Oxalobacter, Bacteroidales_UCG.001, and p.1088.a5_gut_group were identified to explain 75.72% of the variation in NH3-N utilization efficiency with the RandomForest model. Conclusion: Thus, core bacterial composition and function retained under high urea (5% urea in diet) over 23 days of continuous batch culture in vitro, and bacterial biomarkers for ammonia utilization were illustrated in this study. These findings might provide potential applications in improving the efficiency and safety of non-protein nitrogen utilization in ruminants.

ABSTRACT

Prenatal exposure to phthalates is common. However, its effect on birth weight has always been met with conflicting conclusions. To explore the effects of prenatal phthalate exposure on neonatal weight, we searched PubMed, Web of Science (WOS), Cochrane Library, and Embase databases for articles published up to October 24, 2023. Observational studies with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were included. Our findings indicate no significant association between either mixed exposure effects or single phthalate metabolites and offspring birth weight when monitoring maternal urine phthalate metabolites. When stratified by sex, ΣHMWPs and MMP significantly reduced the birth weight of female offspring (ΣHMWPs: Pooled ß = -62.08, 95%CI: -123.11 to -1.05, P = 0.046; MMP: Pooled ß = -10.77, 95%CI: -18.74 to -2.80, P = 0.008). The results of subgroup analysis showed that ΣPAEs and ΣDEHP significantly decreased birth weight in the specific gravity correction group (ΣPAEs: Pooled estimates = -29.31, 95%CI: -58.52 to -0.10, P = 0.049; ΣDEHP: Pooled estimates = -18.25, 95%CI: -33.03 to -3.47, P = 0.016), and MECPP showed a positive correlation in the creatinine correction group (MECPP: Pooled estimates = 18.45, 95%CI: 0.13 to 36.77, P = 0.048). MEP and MBzP were negatively associated with birth weight in the no adjustment for gestational age group (MEP: Pooled estimates = -7.70, 95%CI: -14.19 to -1.21, P = 0.020; MBzP: Pooled estimates = -9.55, 95%CI: -16.08 to -3.03, P = 0.004). To make the results more convincing, more high-quality studies with large samples are urgently required.
