ABSTRACT

Emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression, represent a major societal problem; however, the underlying neurological mechanism remains unknown. The ventral lateral septum (LSv) is implicated in regulating processes related to mood and motivation. In this study, we found that LSv GABAergic neurons were significantly activated in mice experiencing chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) after exposure to a social stressor. We then controlled LSv GABAergic neuron activity using a chemogenetic approach. The results showed that although manipulation of LSv GABAergic neurons had little effect on anxiety-like behavioral performances, the activation of LSv GABAergic neurons during CSDS worsened social anxiety during a social interaction (SI) test. Moreover, LSv GABAergic neurons showed strong projections to the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, which is a central hub for stress reactions. Remarkably, while activation of GABAergic LSv-PVN projections induced social anxiety under basal conditions, activation of this pathway during CSDS alleviated social anxiety during the SI test. On the other hand, the chemogenetic manipulation of LSv GABAergic neurons or LSvGABA-PVN projections had no significant effect on despair-like behavioral performance in the tail suspension test. Overall, LS GABAergic neurons, particularly the LSv GABAergic-PVN circuit, has a regulatory role in pathological anxiety and is thus a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of emotional disorders.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Bone or brain metastases may develop in 20-40% of individuals with late-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), resulting in a median overall survival of only 4-6 months. However, the primary lung cancer tissue's distinctions between bone, brain and intrapulmonary metastases of NSCLC at the single-cell level have not been underexplored. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of 14 tissue biopsy samples obtained from treatment-naïve advanced NSCLC patients with bone (n = 4), brain (n = 6) or intrapulmonary (n = 4) metastasis using single-cell sequencing originating from the lungs. Following quality control and the removal of doublets, a total of 80 084 cells were successfully captured. RESULTS: The most significant inter-group differences were observed in the fraction and function of fibroblasts. We identified three distinct cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) subpopulations: myofibroblastic CAF (myCAF), inflammatory CAF (iCAF) and antigen-presenting CAF (apCAF). Notably, apCAF was prevalent in NSCLC with bone metastasis, while iCAF dominated in NSCLC with brain metastasis. Intercellular signalling network analysis revealed that apCAF may play a role in bone metastasis by activating signalling pathways associated with cancer stemness, such as SPP1-CD44 and SPP1-PTGER4. Conversely, iCAF was found to promote brain metastasis by activating invasion and metastasis-related molecules, such as MET hepatocyte growth factor. Furthermore, the interaction between CAFs and tumour cells influenced T-cell exhaustion and signalling pathways within the tumour microenvironment. CONCLUSIONS: This study unveils the direct interplay between tumour cells and CAFs in NSCLC with bone or brain metastasis and identifies potential therapeutic targets for inhibiting metastasis by disrupting these critical cell-cell interactions.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The comprehensive management of a patient with chronic graft-versus-host disease skin ulcers after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is challenging. This report describes the case of a 53-year-old woman who presented with ulcers on her right leg 140 weeks after a bone marrow transplant. The patient received wound assessment and management based on the Triangle of Wound Assessment and Wound Bed Preparation 2021, respectively. Hydrogel and antibacterial protease dressings were applied along with systemic oral administration of moxifloxacin hydrochloride (two capsules, two times daily) and JiXueGanPian tablets (classic Chinese herbal formula; two capsules, two times daily), hospital-community-home continuous care, and patient-centered education. Finally, after 133 days of nursing, the patient's wound was completely healed without complications or other skin issues. The use of hydrogel combined with the antibacterial protease dressing was a promising technique for handling this type of wound, enhanced by multidisciplinary collaboration. Of course, providing patients with education that focuses on prevention is necessary.

ABSTRACT

Chronic stress is a major risk factor for psychiatric disorders. However, certain individuals may be at higher risk due to greater stress susceptibility. Elucidating the neurobiology of stress resilience and susceptibility may facilitate the development of novel strategies to prevent and treat stress-related disorders such as depression. Mounting evidence suggests that the serotonin (5-HT) system is a major regulator of stress sensitivity. In this study, we assessed the functions of 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors within the lateral septum (LS) in regulating stress vulnerability. Among a group of male mice exposed to chronic social defeat stress (CSDS), 47.2% were classified as stress-susceptible, and these mice employed more passive coping strategies during the defeat and exhibited more severe anxiety- and depression-like behaviors during the following behavioral tests. These stress-susceptible mice also exhibited elevated neuronal activity in the LS as evidenced by greater c-Fos expression, greater activity of 5-HT neurons in both the dorsal and median raphe nucleus, and downregulated expression of the 5-HT1A receptor in the intermediate LS (LSi). Finally, we found the stress-induced social withdrawal symptoms could be rapidly relieved by LSi administration of 8-OH-DPAT, a 5-HT1A receptor agonist. These results indicate that 5-HT1A receptors within the LSi play an important role in stress vulnerability in mice. Therefore, modulation of stress vulnerable via 5-HT1A receptor activation in the LSi is a potential strategy to treat stress-related psychiatric disorders.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare the effects of four intermittent fasting regimens on blood glucose and insulin sensitivity in people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Randomized controlled trials of intermittent fasting in the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Embase, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, CNKI, VIP Database, and WANFANG Database were searched for from the library to September 2023. 2 review authors independently screened studies and extracted data. RevMan 5.4 was used for direct comparison of meta-results. Network meta-analysis was performed using Stata16 software. Results: 13 studies with a total of 867 patients were included. The intervention effects of twice-per-week fasting, fasting-mimicking diet, time-restricted eating, and peridic fasting were better than that of conventional diet. The results of the network comparison showed that there was no significant difference in the intervention effect of the intermittent fasting regimens. SUCRA ranking results showed that the twice-per-week fasting was best for comprehensive interventions for improvement. Conclusion: From the perspective of fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin and insulin resistance, the twice-per-week fasting intervention has a good effect, which can be used as a reference for patients with inter-type 2 diabetes to choose intermittent fasting regimen. However, more clinical trials are needed to verify this at a later stage.

ABSTRACT

The crisp grass carp (CGC; Ctenopharyngodon idellus C. et V.), known for its unique texture and flavour, is a culinary delicacy whose quality is significantly influenced by thermal processing. This study employed 4D label-free proteomics and data mining techniques to investigate the proteomic changes in CGC muscle tissue induced by various heating temperatures. CGC samples were subjected to a series of heat treatments at increasing temperatures from 20 °C to 90 °C. Proteins were extracted, digested, and analysed using high-resolution mass spectrometry. The proteomic data were then subjected to extensive bioinformatics analysis, including GO and KEGG pathway enrichment. We identified a total of 1085 proteins, 516 of which were shared across all the temperature treatments, indicating a core proteome responsible for CGC textural properties. Differential expression analysis revealed temperature-dependent changes, with significant alterations observed at 90 °C, suggesting denaturation or aggregation of proteins at higher temperatures. Functional enrichment analysis indicated that proteins involved in amino acid metabolism, glutathione metabolism, and nucleotide metabolism were particularly affected by heat. Textural analysis correlated these proteomic changes with alterations in CGC quality attributes, pinpointing 70 °C as the optimum temperature for maintaining the desired texture. A strong positive correlation between specific upregulated proteins was identified, such as the tubulin alpha chain and collagen alpha-1(IV) chain, and the improved textural properties of CGC during thermal processing, suggesting their potential as the potential biomarkers. This study offers a comprehensive proteomic view of the thermal stability and functionality of CGC proteins, delivering invaluable insights for both the culinary processing and scientific management of CGC. Our findings not only deepen the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underpinning the textural alterations in CGC during thermal processing but also furnish practical insights for the aquaculture industry. These insights could be leveraged to optimize cooking techniques, thereby enhancing the quality and consumer appeal of CGC products.

ABSTRACT

Two novel fungal polyketides, phometides A (1) and B (2), together with four known compounds (3-6), were isolated from the endophytic fungus Phoma sp. YUD17001 obtained from Gastrodia elata Blume. The structures were elucidated based on spectroscopic analyses, X-ray crystal diffraction, and time-dependent density functional theory/electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT/ECD) calculations. Structurally, phometide A (1) represented the first example of C12 polyketide characterized by an unusual tetrahydrobenzofuran-3(2H)-one core with an α,ß-unsaturated ketone functionality, while phometide B (2) was an unprecedented molecule containing a 2-pentylcycloheptan-1-one scaffold. In an antimicrobial activity assay, phometide A (1) exhibited significant inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus with MIC value of 4 µg/mL. Phometide B (2) showed moderate antifungal activity against Candida albicans with an MIC value of 16 µg/mL. Furthermore, compounds 1 and 2 were evaluated for their acetylcholinesterase inhibitory and cytotoxic activities.

BACKGROUND: The current study probed into how tumor cell-derived exosomes (Exos) mediated hsa_circ_0001739/lncRNA AC159540.1 to manipulate microRNA (miR)-218-5p/FTO-N6-methyladenosine (m6A)/MYC signal axis in liver metastasis in colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS: hsa_circ_0001739 and lncRNA AC159540.1 were identified as the upstream regulator of miR-218-5p using ENCORI and LncBase databases. Expression patterns of miR-218-5p, hsa_circ_0001739, lncRNA AC159540.1, FTO, and MYC were detected, accompanied by loss-and-gain-of function assays to examine their effects on CRC cell biological functions. SW480 cells-derived Exos were purified, followed by in vitro studies to uncover the effect of hsa_circ_0001739/lncRNA AC159540. RESULTS: miR-218-5p was downregulated while hsa_circ_0001739/lncRNA AC159540.1 was upregulated in CRC tissues and cells. Silencing of hsa_circ_0001739/lncRNA AC159540.1 restrained the malignant phenotypes of CRC cells. Exos-mediated hsa_circ_0001739/lncRNA AC159540.1 competitively inhibited miR-218-5p to elevate FTO and MYC. The inducing role of Exos-mediated hsa_circ_0001739/lncRNA AC159540.1 in CRC was also validated in vivo. CONCLUSION: Conclusively, Exos-mediated circ_0001739/lncRNA AC159540.1 regulatory network is critical for CRC, offering a theoretical basis for CRC treatment.

ABSTRACT

Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for meningioma, the most common primary intracranial tumor, but improvements in meningioma risk stratification are needed and indications for postoperative radiotherapy are controversial. Here we develop a targeted gene expression biomarker that predicts meningioma outcomes and radiotherapy responses. Using a discovery cohort of 173 meningiomas, we developed a 34-gene expression risk score and performed clinical and analytical validation of this biomarker on independent meningiomas from 12 institutions across 3 continents (N = 1,856), including 103 meningiomas from a prospective clinical trial. The gene expression biomarker improved discrimination of outcomes compared with all other systems tested (N = 9) in the clinical validation cohort for local recurrence (5-year area under the curve (AUC) 0.81) and overall survival (5-year AUC 0.80). The increase in AUC compared with the standard of care, World Health Organization 2021 grade, was 0.11 for local recurrence (95% confidence interval 0.07 to 0.17, P < 0.001). The gene expression biomarker identified meningiomas benefiting from postoperative radiotherapy (hazard ratio 0.54, 95% confidence interval 0.37 to 0.78, P = 0.0001) and suggested postoperative management could be refined for 29.8% of patients. In sum, our results identify a targeted gene expression biomarker that improves discrimination of meningioma outcomes, including prediction of postoperative radiotherapy responses.

Social hierarchy greatly influences behavior and health. Both human and animal studies have signaled the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) as specifically related to social hierarchy. Dopamine D1 receptors (D1Rs) and D2 receptors (D2Rs) are abundantly expressed in the mPFC, modulating its functions. However, it is unclear how DR-expressing neurons in the mPFC regulate social hierarchy. Here, using a confrontation tube test, we found that most adult C57BL/6J male mice could establish a linear social rank after 1 week of cohabitation. Lower rank individuals showed social anxiety together with decreased serum testosterone levels. D2R expression was significantly downregulated in the dorsal part of mPFC (dmPFC) in lower rank individuals, whereas D1R expression showed no significant difference among the rank groups in the whole mPFC. Virus knockdown of D2Rs in the dmPFC led to mice being particularly prone to lose the contests in the confrontation tube test. Finally, simultaneous D2R activation in the subordinates and D2R inhibition in the dominants in a pair switched their dominant-subordinate relationship. The above results indicate that D2Rs in the dmPFC play an important role in social dominance. Our findings provide novel insights into the divergent functions of prefrontal D1Rs and D2Rs in social dominance, which may contribute to ameliorating social dysfunctions along with abnormal social hierarchy.

The dopamine (DA) system has long been involved in social hierarchies; however, the specific mechanisms have not been elucidated. The lateral septum (LS) is a limbic brain structure that regulates various emotional, motivational, and social behaviors. DA receptors are abundantly expressed in the LS, modulating its functions. In this study, we evaluated the functions of DA receptors within different subregions of the LS in social dominance using a confrontation tube test in male mice. The results showed that mice living in social groups formed linear dominance hierarchies after a few days of cohousing, and the subordinates showed increased anxiety. Fos expressions was elevated in the entire LS after a confrontation tube test in the subordinates. However, DA neurons were more activated in the dominates within the ventral tegmental area and the dorsal raphe nucleus. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction results showed that D2 receptor (D2R) within the intermediate region of the LS (LSi) were elevated in the subordinate. In the following pharmacological studies, we found simultaneous D2R activation in the dominants and D2R inhibition in the subordinates switched the original dominant-subordinate relationship. The aforementioned results suggested that D2R within the LSi plays an important role in social dominance in male mice. These findings improve our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying the social hierarchy, which is closely related to our social life and happiness.

Most social animals self-organize into dominance hierarchies that strongly influence their behavior and health. The serotonin (5-HT) system is believed to play an important role in the formation of social hierarchy. 5-HT receptors are abundantly expressed in the amygdala, which is considered as the central node for the perception and learning of social hierarchy. In this study, we assessed the functions of various 5-HT receptor subtypes related to social rank determination in different subregions of the amygdala using the confrontation tube test in mice. We revealed that most adult C57BL/6 J male mice exhibited a linear social rank after a few days of cohousing. The tube test ranks were slightly related to anxiety-like behavioral performance. After the tube test, the amygdala and 5-HT neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus were activated in lower-rank individuals. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that despite the high expression of 5-HT1A receptor mRNA in the central amygdala (CeA), 5-HT2A receptor mRNA expression was downregulated in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) in higher-rank individuals. The dominant-subordinate relationship between mouse pairs could be switched via pharmacological modulation of these receptors in CeA and BLA, suggesting that these expression changes are essential for establishing social ranks. Our findings provide novel insights into the divergent functions of 5-HT receptors in the amygdala related to social hierarchy, which is closely related to our health and welfare.

Objective: To investigate the correlation between vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia (VBD) and posterior cranial fossa (PCF) space. Methods: The medical records and imaging data of patients with VBD and control group were collected from June 2021 to June 2022 in the Third People's Hospital of Hubei Province. All patients with VBD were graded by head and neck CTA. The grading index was divided into two parts, including vertebral artery bifurcation height and offset degree. Taking the healthy adult subjects of matched age as the control group. The linear volume of posterior cranial fossa was measured by median sagittal CTA images. Middle clivus length, transverse diameter of occipital foramen, supraoccipital length, sagittal diameter of posterior cranial fossa and height diameter of posterior cranial fossa was measured. The volume of the PCF was calculated by 3Dslice software. The relationship between VBD and the volume of PCF was analyzed by SPSS23.0. Results: The height diameter of posterior cranial fossa, sagittal diameter of posterior cranial fossa, transverse diameter of occipital foramen, clival length, supraoccipital length and space volume of PCF were 34.78 ± 3.67 mm, 85.49 ± 4.15 mm, 30.89 ± 3.94 mm, 44.53 ± 5.36 mm, 45.21 ± 6.45 mm, 171.08 ± 15.81 cm3 in the case group. The linear volume of PCF and space volume of PCF were significantly lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that the independent risk factors of VBD were height diameter of PCF, sagittal diameter of PCF, transverse diameter of occipital foramen, clival length, supraoccipital length and space volume of posterior cranial fossa. According to the classification, the height and diameter of PCF in grade 1 was significantly smaller than that in grade 2 VBD (P < 0.05). Under the standard of BA bifurcation degree, there were significant differences between different grades of VBD patients and age (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The smaller volume of PCF may leading the greater possibility of VBD. Under the classification of VBD, the older, the longer the course of disease is, the higher degree of VBD classification is.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an emerging and effective therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, little is known about its utilization, surgical populations, centers, coverages, regional balance, and influential factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This large-scale multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted using a national census involving 74 Chinese centers. National DBS populations and centers for PD were investigated in 1997-2021, and regional sociodemographic features, surgical populations, related resources, and insurance policies in 2020 were explored. RESULTS: Since the first DBS surgery in 1997, a total of 38 122 PD patients from 349 centers underwent DBS by 2021, which covered 1.118% (1.108-1.129) of patients and 0.954% (0.933-0.976) of centers. Significant upward trends in the annual surgical population and coverages were observed with rapid climbing rates, while the annual surgical centers and their coverage showed two growth peaks in 2002-2006 and 2010-2018, correlating with clinical approvals and new technologies. A total of 103 070 (51 165-154 975) PD patients [2.088% (1.351-2.825) coverage] and 603 (72-1134) centers [1.356% (1.126-1.586) coverage] are predicted to conduct DBS by 2030. The new remotely programmed DBS technology was recoded as the first application in 2015 and rapidly increased to 2771 (47.39%, 46.11-48.67) patients with 10 507 remote programming sessions annually in 2021. Provinces in the eastern and central regions had better economic status, more surgical patients, higher insurance affordability, and more related resources than those in the western and northeastern regions. Higher gross domestic product per capita ( ß =5.041, 3.324-6.758 and ß =0.008, 0.004-0.012; all P <0.001) and more functional neurosurgery doctors ( ß =3.596, 0.353-6.839; P =0.031 and ß =0.010, 0.002-0.017; P =0.013) positively influenced surgical populations and coverages, while higher insurance levels ( ß =128.888, 64.702-193.075; P <0.001) positively influenced surgical coverages. CONCLUSION: Although surgical populations, centers, and coverages of DBS for PD have rapidly improved and are predicted to show future increases, this is still insufficient to cover potential eligible patients. Regionally imbalanced health coverage should be given attention to promote coordinated development.

OBJECTIVE: Poststroke fatigue (PSF) is a common and debilitating problem among stroke patients. Multidimensional fatigue inventory (MFI) has been recommended to assess fatigue related to acquired brain injury. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of MFI among stroke patients. METHODS: The study recruited 252 stroke patients in China. The internal consistency of the Chinese-version MFI was evaluated using Cronbach's α coefficients. The test-retest reliability was measured over a 5-day interval with intraclass correlation coefficient. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to analyze the construct validity. The concurrent validity of MFI was examined by calculating the Pearson's correlation coefficient between the scores of MFI and the fatigue assessment scale (FAS). RESULTS: The exploratory factor analysis of the Chinese-version of MFI showed that it captured three dimensions of PSF, namely, physical fatigue, mental fatigue, and level of activity. The Chinese-version MFI demonstrated satisfactory internal consistency with Cronbach's α ranging from 0.83 (mental fatigue) to 0.91 (total scale). The Chinese-version MFI showed adequate test-retest reliability with intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.70 for the total scale, 0.69 for physical fatigue, 0.66 for mental fatigue, and 0.62 for level of activity. The concurrent validity of the Chinese-version MFI was demonstrated by a significant positive correlation (r=0.49, p <0.001) with FAS. CONCLUSION: This study findings showed that Chinese-version MFI has adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability, and demonstrated its concurrent validity with FAS. The findings provide preliminary evidence of the three-factor structure of Chinese-version MFI by exploratory factor analysis.

ABSTRACT

In rice breeding, thermosensitive genic male sterility (TGMS) lines based on the tms5 locus have been extensively employed. Here, we reported a novel rice TGMS line ostms15 (Oryza sativa ssp. japonica ZH11) which show male sterility under high temperature and fertility under low temperature. Field evaluation from 2018 to 2021 revealed that its sterility under high temperature is more stable than that of tms5 (ZH11), even with occasional low temperature periods, indicating its considerable value for rice breeding. OsTMS15 encodes an LRR-RLK protein MULTIPLE SPOROCYTE1 (MSP1) which was reported to interact with its ligand to initiate tapetum development for pollen formation. In ostms15, a point mutation from GTA (Val) to GAA (Glu) in its TIR motif of the LRR region led to the TGMS phenotype. Cellular observation and gene expression analysis showed that the tapetum is still present in ostms15, while its function was substantially impaired under high temperature. However, its tapetum function was restored under low temperature. The interaction between mOsTMS15 and its ligand was reduced while this interaction was partially restored under low temperature. Slow development was reported to be a general mechanism of P/TGMS fertility restoration. We propose that the recovered protein interaction together with slow development under low temperature compensates for the defective tapetum initiation, which further restores ostms15 fertility. We used base editing to create a number of TGMS lines with different base substitutions based on the OsTMS15 locus. This work may also facilitate the mechanistic investigation and breeding of other crops.

ABSTRACT

Earth's near space is an extreme atmosphere environment with high levels of radiation, low atmospheric pressure and dramatic temperature fluctuations. The region is above the flight altitude of aircraft but below the orbit of satellites, which has special and Mars-like conditions for investigating the survival and evolution of life. Technical limitations including flight devices, payloads and technologies/methodologies hinder microbiological research in near space. In this study, we investigated microbial survival and adaptive strategies in near space using a scientific balloon fight mission and multi-omics analyses. Methods for sample preparation, storage, protector and vessel were optimized to prepare the exposed microbial samples. After 3 h 17 min of exposure at a float altitude of ~32 km, only Bacillus strains were alive with survival efficiencies of 0-10-6. Diverse mutants with significantly altered metabolites were generated, firstly proving that Earth's near space could be used as a new powerful microbial breeding platform. Multi-omics analyses of mutants revealed cascade changes at the genome, transcriptome and proteome levels. In response to environmental stresses, two mutants had similar proteome changes caused by different genomic mutations and mRNA expression levels. Metabolic network analysis combined with proteins' expression levels revealed that metabolic fluxes of EMP, PPP and purine synthesis-related pathways were significantly altered to increase/decrease inosine production. Further analysis showed that proteins related to translation, molecular chaperones, cell wall/membrane, sporulation, DNA replication/repair and anti-oxidation were significantly upregulated, enabling cells to efficiently repair DNA/protein damages and improve viability against environmental stress. Overall, these results revealed genetic and metabolic responses of Bacillus to the harsh conditions in near space, providing a research basis for bacterial adaptive mechanisms in extreme environments.

CONTEXT: In this paper, the adsorption characteristics of five sulfonamide antibiotic molecules on carbon nanotubes were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The adsorption configurations of different adsorption sites were optimized, and the most stable adsorption configuration of each sulfonamide molecule was determined by adsorption energy comparison, and the relative adsorption stability of five sulfonamide molecules on carbon nanotubes was determined by comparing their adsorption energies, i.e., sulfamethazine > sulfadiazine > sulfamerazine > sulfamethoxazole > sulfanilamide. The electron densities of the adsorption configurations were then calculated to confirm that the adsorption of five sulfonamide drug molecules on carbon nanotubes should be physical adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption energy of five sulfonamide molecules on carbon nanotubes in the aqueous environment was larger than that in the vacuum even though the adsorption process remain to be physical adsorption. The adsorption characteristics of the five sulfonamide molecules in various acid-base environments were finally investigated. In contrast, the adsorption energies of the five drug molecules in acid-base environments were significantly reduced, indicating that carbon nanotubes may need to have a suitable pH range to achieve the optimal adsorption effect when they are used for the treatment of sulfonamide antibiotics. METHODS: In this paper, we use density functional theory (DFT) with PBE functional to study the adsorption properties of five sulfonamides on carbon nanotubes. The structural optimization and the calculation of electronic structural properties are carried out by CP2K package (version 7.1), adopting the DZVP-MOLOPT-SR-GTH basis set and Goedeck-Teter-Hutter (GTH) pseudo potential. Grimme's D3 correction is used to during all the calculations to correctly capture the influence of the van der Waals interactions.

ABSTRACT

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) are two kinds of strategies to reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, which is emitted from the burning of fossil fuels and leads to the greenhouse effect. With the unique properties of ionic liquids (ILs), such as low vapor pressures, tunable structures, high solubilities, and high thermal and chemical stabilities, they could be used as solvents and catalysts for CO2 capture and conversion into value-added chemicals. In this critical review, we mainly focus our attention on the tuning IL-based catalysts for CO2 conversion into quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones from o-aminobenzonitriles during this decade (2012~2022). Due to the importance of basicity and nucleophilicity of catalysts, kinds of ILs with basic anions such as [OH], carboxylates, aprotic heterocyclic anions, etc., for conversion CO2 and o-aminobenzonitriles into quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones via different catalytic mechanisms, including amino preferential activation, CO2 preferential activation, and simultaneous amino and CO2 activation, are investigated systematically. Finally, future directions and prospects for CO2 conversion by IL-based catalysts are outlined. This review is benefit for academic researchers to obtain an overall understanding of the synthesis of quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-diones from CO2 and o-aminobenzonitriles by IL-based catalysts. This work will also open a door to develop novel IL-based catalysts for the conversion of other acid gases such as SO2 and H2S.

ABSTRACT

Background: The aim of this study is to address the paucity of epidemiological data regarding the characteristics, treatment patterns and survival outcomes of Chinese glioblastoma patients. Methods: This was a population-level study of Hong Kong adult (>18 years) Chinese patients with newly diagnosed histologically confirmed glioblastoma between 2006 and 2019. The age standardized incidence rate (ASIR), patient-, tumor- treatment-related characteristics, overall survival (OS) as well as its predictors were determined. Results: One thousand and ten patients with a median follow-up of 10.0 months were reviewed. The ASIR of glioblastoma was 1.0 per 100 000 population with no significant change during the study period. The mean age was 57 + 14 years. The median OS was 10.6 months (IQR: 5.2-18.4). Independent predictors for survival were: Karnofsky performance score >80 (adjusted OR: 0.8; 95% CI: 0.6-0.9), IDH-1 mutant (aOR: 0.7; 95% CI: 0.5-0.9) or MGMT methylated (aOR: 0.7; 95% CI: 0.5-0.8) glioblastomas, gross total resection (aOR: 0.8; 95% CI: 0.5-0.8) and temozolomide chemoradiotherapy (aOR 0.4; 95% CI: 0.3-0.6). Despite the significant increased administration of temozolomide chemoradiotherapy from 39% (127/326) of patients in 2006-2010 to 63% (227/356) in 2015-2019 (P-value < .001), median OS did not improve (2006-2010: 10.3 months vs 2015-2019: 11.8 months) (OR: 1.1; 95% CI: 0.9-1.3). Conclusions: The incidence of glioblastoma in the Chinese general population is low. We charted the development of neuro-oncological care of glioblastoma patients in Hong Kong during the temozolomide era. Although there was an increased adoption of temozolomide chemoradiotherapy, a corresponding improvement in survival was not observed.
