ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: A capsule robot (CR) with an onboard active locomotion mechanism, has been developed as a promising alternative to colonoscopy due to its minimally-invasive advantage. Predicting the traction force and locomotion resistance of the CR, which are both the friction force, is significantly important for the CR development and control. However, a comprehensive study concerning the coefficient of friction (COF) in the colon, which is necessary for prediction, is not available in literature. This paper is dedicated to determining a quantitative COF equation in terms of the contact pressure, hoop strain, and sliding velocity. METHODS: The COFs of three commonly-used materials of the CR (i.e., PDMS, white and transparent ABS plastic), are measured under 144 different friction cases (6 contact pressures×4 hoop strains×6 sliding velocities). By analyzing the measurements, the influence law of the three factors on the COFs of the three materials is revealed, and based on which, a general COF equation involving eight fitted constants is determined. RESULTS: The determination coefficients of the COF equation for the three materials are up to 0.9822, 0.9286, and 0.9696, respectively. The COF equation is used to predict the traction force and locomotion resistance of a crawler CR, and the predicting results fit well with the measured ones. CONCLUSION: The COF equation can provide a correct COF for friction force prediction. SIGNIFICANCE: It is promising to enable a better force and locomotion control for the CR in the colon.

ABSTRACT

The dynamic performance of a 2-DOF hip joint rehabilitation robot configuration for patients with hip joint dyskinesia was analyzed. There were eight revolute pairs on one side of the hip joint rehabilitation robot configuration. The dynamics of the robot configuration were analyzed with the Newton-Euler method, and a dynamic model was developed. On the basis of the solved dynamic model, the dynamic performance index of the hip joint rehabilitation robot configuration is given, and the performance atlas under different parameters is drawn. The performance of the hip joint rehabilitation robot is theoretically verified. This study provides a theoretical basis for the research and development of exoskeleton rehabilitation robots.

ABSTRACT

The security and efficiency of gene delivery vectors are inseparable for the successful construction of a gene delivery vector. This work provides a practical method to construct a charge-regulated, hydrophobic-modified, and functionally modified polyethylenimine (PEI) with effective gene delivery and perfect transfection performance through a condensation reaction, named BA-PEI. The carrier was shown to possess a favorable compaction of miRNAs into positively charged nanoparticles with a hydrodynamic size of approximately 100 nm. Additionally, BA-PEI possesses perfect degradability, which benefits the release of miR-34a from the complexes. In A549 cells, the expression level of the miR-34a gene was checked by Western blotting, which reflects the transfection efficiency of BA-PEI/miR-34a. When miR-34a is delivered to the cell, the perfect anti-tumor ability of the BA-PEI/miR-34a complex was systematically evaluated with the suppressor tumor gene miR-34a system in vitro and in vivo. BA-PEI-mediated miR-34a gene transfection is more secure and effective than the commercial transfection reagent, thus providing a novel approach for miR-34a-based gene therapy.

ABSTRACT

The recently reported two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite materials exhibit a plethora of advantages, making them an ideal candidate for constructing high-performance photodetectors. The mixed 2D/3D Cs2SnI2Cl2/Cs2TiI6 heterojunction is an S-scheme heterojunction and has excellent light trapping ability. Due to the spontaneous transfer of carriers caused by different work functions, a built-in electric field is formed in the heterojunction and the self-powered capability is provided. Through the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) method, it is found that the heterojunction exhibits fast photoresponse, low losses and efficient carrier separation. In addition, biaxial compressive strain can not only broaden the photoresponse of the Cs2SnI2Cl2/Cs2TiI6 heterojunction in the near-infrared region and enhance the optical absorption coefficient of the heterojunction, but also enhance the self-powered ability of the heterojunction. Our discoveries present a highly effective avenue for the future development of high-performance, self-powered hybrid optoelectronic devices.

ABSTRACT

PVC gels are gaining more attention in the applications of soft actuators. While their characteristics have been extensively studied experimentally, precise models that predict the deformation due to imposed mechanical and electrical forces are not yet available. In this work, a viscoelastic model based on a combination of a Maxwell and a Kelvin-Voigt model is developed to describe the responsive deformation of the actuator. The model parameters are tuned using data obtained from a unique experimental setup. The PVC gel used in the actuator is made from PVC and dibutyl adipate (DBA) together with a tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent. A full factorial test campaign with four and three levels for the mechanical and electrical forces, respectively, are considered. The results showed that some of the viscoelastic response could be captured by the model to some extent but, furthermore, the stiffness behavior of the PVC gel seemed to be load-type-dependent, meaning that the PVC-gel material changed stiffness due to the magnitude of the electrical force applied and this change was not equal to a similar change in mechanical force.

Objectives: Balance is a crucial ability of early age, but there is conflicting evidence with regard to age and gender differences in preschool children's balance ability. Additionally, there are several tools available to measure balance, yet, wide variation in their use has restricted the capacity to synthesize the reference values. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to investigate the balance ability of preschool-aged children and determine how it is moderated by age and gender. The analysis pertained to determining whether different testing methods affect the results of static or dynamic balancing ability to provide a basis for normative balance ability data for healthy boys and girls between 3 and 6 years of age. Method: Six hundred and nineteen preschool children (296 boys and 323 girls) aged 3-6 years participated in the study. The static balance (SB) was assessed with children standing on one leg (OST) and in a tandem stance (TS) with respect to time. The balance beam test (BBT) and functional reach test (FRT) were used to evaluate dynamic balance (DB) by measuring the time spent and the distance reached, respectively. Result: The results revealed significant differences in OST with respect to gender (η2 = 0.037, p < 0.001), TS (η2 = 0.026, p < 0.001) and FRT (η2 = 0.016, p = 0.002); the girls performed better than boys on most balance tests except on BBT (η2 = 0.000, p = 0.596). Age had positive effects on the static and dynamic balance performance on the OST (η2 = 0.336, p < 0.001), TS (η2 = 0.205, p < 0.001), BBT (η2 = 0.367, p < 0.001) and FRT (η2 = 0.392, p < 0.001). Older children performed better than their younger counterparts. No significant interactions between age groups and sex were found. Conclusion: This study revealed that static and dynamic balance stability in preschool-aged children was affected by gender and age. Gender dimorphism is present in preschool children, older girls displayed better postural stability than boys, and balance performance improved with age. In addition, the study provides age- and gender-specific balance performance reference values for preschool children across multiple methods, which can be used to monitor static and dynamic balance development.

ABSTRACT

Celastrol is a promising antitumor drug candidate, but the poor water solubility and cytotoxicity limit its clinical application. Herein, we synthesized a Celastrol (Cel)-chitosan oligosaccharide (CSO) conjugate (Cel-CSO) for drug delivery. Celastrol was conjugated to a CSO backbone via amide bond formation, which was verified by infrared spectrum (IR) analyses. The Cel-CSO contained ∼10 wt% of Celastrol showed excellent aqueous solubility (18.6 mg/mL) in comparation with the parent Celastrol. Cel-CSO significantly inhibited tumor growth, induced apoptosis, and effectively suppressed tumor metastasis in human pancreatic cancer cells (BxPC-3). While the cytotoxicity of Cel-CSO in hepatic cells (HL7702) was lower than that of the free Celastrol. Cel-CSO enhanced the anticancer efficacy, promoted the circulation time of Celastrol, and reduced the subacute toxicity, which indicated that CSO can be a promising Celastrol delivery system for pancreatic cancer therapy.

ABSTRACT

In this article, nano-CuCr2O4 (copper chromite)/ultrafine ammonium perchlorate (AP) composites were prepared by a ultrasonic dispersion method and a mechanical grinding method. A series of nano-CuCr2O4/ultrafine AP composites with different dispersions were prepared by controlling the compounding time to study the best catalytic effect of nano-CuCr2O4 on the ultrafine AP. The microstructures, surface elements, and morphologies of samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy. The catalytic effect of nano-CuCr2O4 on the thermal decomposition of AP was investigated by differential scanning calorimetric techniques and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicated that the mechanical ball milling method could make nano-CuCr2O4 more evenly dispersed on the ultrafine AP, and with the increase in the milling time, the uniformity of nano-CuCr2O4 on the ultrafine AP was better. When the milling time was 6-12 h, nano-CuCr2O4 was most evenly dispersed on the ultrafine AP. At this time, the decomposition temperature and Gibbs free energy of the nano-CuCr2O4/ultrafine AP composite were the lowest, which decreased by 78.1 °C and 25.16 kJ/mol compared with those of ultrafine AP, respectively. Moreover, the mechanical sensitivity of nano-CuCr2O4/ultrafine AP composites was lower than that of ultrafine AP. It showed that ball milling for 6-12 h could make nano-CuCr2O4 evenly dispersed on the ultrafine AP, and nano-CuCr2O4 could play the best catalytic effect on the ultrafine AP.

The output and grade of liquid potash minerals in Qarhan Salt Lake are decreasing year by year, which has become the main problem restricting the sustainable production of potassium fertilizer. The exploitation and utilization of low-grade solid potash ore, which is in the strata of the Qarhan Salt Lake, represents the fundamental framework for the sustainable development of Qarhan Salt Lake's potash fertilizer. PHREEQC is a simulation software for hydrogeochemistry. In this paper, PHREEQC was applied to simulate temperature, pH value and solvent chemical characteristics which affect the dissolution process of low-grade solid potash minerals. The simulation results indicate that the optimum temperature for ore dissolution is around 25 °C, because, around this temperature, the dissolving ability of solvents to low-grade solid potash minerals is enhanced, while the dissolving ability to halite remains basically unchanged, which is conducive to selective dissolution of low-grade solid potash. It is recommended the temperature is between 20 and 30 â„ƒ. The simulation results show that, when the pH value of solvents is more than 9, although it is advantageous to selective dissolution of low-grade solid potash minerals, the solvent becomes strong alkali solution, which will cause environmental pollution and seriously corrode materials and equipment in actual production, so it is recommended the pH value of the solvent is adjusted between 6 and 8. The simulation results show that, when the values of K+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl- and SO42- in the solvent are 0.1%, 2.9%, 3.77%, 0.05%, 15.72% and 0.13% respectively, the solubility of low-grade solid potash ores is stronger, which is more conducive to selective ore dissolution. It is suggested that in actual production, the chemical composition of solvents prepared with old brine and fresh water should be as close as possible to the above chemical composition characteristics.

ABSTRACT

Extension of the light absorption range and a reduction of the possibility of the photo-generated electron-hole pair recombination are the main tasks to break the bottleneck of the photocatalytic application of TiO2. In this paper, we systematically investigate the electronic and optical properties of Sc-doped, C-doped, and Sc/C-codoped TiO2 (101) surfaces using spin-polarized DFT+U calculations. The absorption coefficient of the Sc/C-codoped TiO2 (101) surfaces were enhanced the most compared with the other two doped systems in the high energy region of visible light, which can be attributed to the shallow impurity states. Furthermore, we studied the optical absorption properties with the change of the impurity concentration. The Sc/C-codoped TiO2 (101) surface with 5.56% impurity concentration exhibited optimal photocatalytic performance in the visible region. These results may be helpful for designing the high-performance of the photocatalysts by doping.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to evaluate in vitro and in vivo antitumor efficacy and subacute toxicity of triptolide (TP) prodrug, a conjugate between TP and carboxymethyl chitosan (CC). The CCTP conjugate contained 4∼ wt % TP and displayed excellent aqueous solubility (5 mg/mL) as compared to the native TP (17 µg/mL). In vitro cytotoxicity of CCTP conjugate was evaluated by CCK8 assay against human pancreatic cancer (PC) cell lines, showing comparable the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values to the parent TP. In a mouse model of PC (BxPC-3), the CCTP conjugate administered orally (at dose levels as low as 0.2 mg TP equivalent/kg) showed comparable efficacy in reducing or eliminating xenograft tumor to the same dose of TP, but exhibited much lower subacute toxicity as seen in body weight loss and hematological toxicity.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: High myopia can lead to blindness. Genipin is a collagen cross-linking agent that may be used to treat myopia. However, the mechanism of action of genipin for the treatment of myopia is unclear. This study investigated the effect of genipin on the scleral expression of the miR-29 cluster, matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2), and collagen alpha1 chain of type I (COL1A1) in a guinea pig model of myopia. METHODS: The model of myopia was established by treating guinea pigs with a - 8D lens on both eyes for 21 days, and eyes with a refractive error of - 6D or greater were included. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot were used to examine the mRNA and protein expression, respectively. A dual-luciferase assay was used to determine the direct targeting of the miR-29 cluster on the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) of the COL1A1 gene. RESULTS: The scleral expression of miR-29a, miR-29b, and miR-29c as well as MMP2 was significantly increased, and the scleral expression of COL1A1 was significantly decreased in the myopia group. Genipin treatment reversed these effects in myopic eyes. The dual-luciferase assay showed that the luciferase activities were significantly decreased in human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells transfected with miR-29a and miR-29b, but not miR-29c, compared with those transfected with control miRNAs. CONCLUSIONS: Genipin inhibits the scleral expression of the miR-29 cluster and MMP2 and promotes COL1A1 expression in a guinea pig model of myopia. Thus, genipin may promote COL1A1 expression by reducing the expression of the miR-29 cluster.

BACKGROUND: To explore the pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) expression profile as a prognostic marker of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) as well as lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). METHODS: Retrospective bioinformatics analysis of data from the Cancer Genome Atlas-Lung Cancer dataset and the Human Protein Atlas was performed. PKM2 mRNA expression was monitored using the Kaplan-Meier Plotter online database. GraphPad Prism 6.0 and the SPSS 19.0 software package were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: PKM2 expression was found to be significantly higher in both LUAD and LUSC than in normal controls. Although increased PKM2 expression in LUAD was correlated with poor overall survival (OS) [hazard ratio (HR): 2.128; 95% CI: 1.754-3.653; P<0.001], recurrence-free survival (RFS) (HR: 1.524; 95% CI: 1.069-2.499; P=0.0237), and progression-free survival (PFS) (HR: 2.18; 95% CI: 1.58-3; P<0.001), no such associations were found in LUSC. CONCLUSIONS: PKM2 is a potential prognostic biomarker for LUAD but not for LUSC.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the effects of spectral composition and light intensity on natural refractive development in guinea pigs. METHODS: A total of 124 pigmented guinea pigs (2-week-old) were randomly assigned to three groups at high (Hi; 4000 lx), medium (Me; 400 lx) and low (Lo; 50 lx) light intensities under a 12:12 light/dark cycle for 6wk. Each group was subdivided into subgroups with the following spectra: broad spectrum Solux halogen light (BS), 600 nm above-filtered continuous spectrum (600F), 530 nm above-filtered continuous spectrum (530F), and 480 nm above-filtered continuous spectrum (480F; HiBS: n=10, Hi600F: n=10, Hi530F: n=10, Hi480F: n=10, MeBS: n=10, Me600F: n=10, Me530F: n=10, Me480F: n=10, LoBS: n=11, Lo600F: n=12, Lo530F: n=10, Lo480F: n=11). Refractive error, corneal curvature radius, and axial dimensions were determined by cycloplegic retinoscopy, photokeratometry, and A-scan ultrasonography before and after 2, 4, and 6wk of treatment. Average changes from both eyes in the ocular parameters and refractive error were compared among different subgroups. RESULTS: After 6wk of exposure, high-intensity lighting enhanced hyperopic shift; medium- and low-intensity lighting enhanced myopic shift (P<0.05). Under the same spectrum, axial increase was larger in the low light intensity group than in the medium and high light intensity groups (HiBS: 0.65±0.02 mm, MeBS: 0.67±0.01 mm, LoBS: 0.82±0.02 mm; Hi600F: 0.64±0.02 mm, Me600F: 0.67±0.01 mm, Lo600F: 0.81±0.01 mm; Hi530F: 0.64±0.02 mm, Me530F: 0.67±0.01 mm, Lo530F: 0.73±0.02 mm; Hi480F: 0.64±0.01 mm, Me480F: 0.66±0.01 mm, Lo480F: 0.72±0.02 mm; P<0.05). Under 400 lx, there was a faster axial increase in the MeBS group than in the Me480F group (P<0.05). Under 50 lx, axial length changes were significantly larger in LoBS and Lo600F than in Lo530F and Lo480F (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Under high-intensity lighting, high light intensity rather than spectrum distributions that inhibits axial increase. Under medium- and low-intensity lighting, filtering out the long wavelength inhibits axial growth in juvenile guinea pigs.

ABSTRACT

The electronic structures, formation energy and optical properties of Cu-doped, C-doped, and (Cu, C)-codoped TiO2 were investigated by the projector augmented wave (PAW) method within GGA + U approximation. The results show that the lattice distortion of the Cu@i1&C@i2 system is the largest in all doping systems. The optical absorption edges of the C@i system and the Cu@i1&C@i2 system appear a blue-shift, which is attributed to the band gap expansion and some deep states generation. The Cu@i system exhibits a reduction in band gap and a generation of the hole state, such as it emerges the highest optical absorption in all doping systems.

ABSTRACT

Based on the biomechanical simulation curve of OpenSim, an open source software of biomechanical model, a spherical exoskeleton parallel mechanism with two degrees of freedom for hip joint is proposed in this paper for the rehabilitation therapy of patients with impaired leg motor function or elderly people with walking dysfunction. Firstly, the parallel mechanism is modeled and the position inverse solution of the parallel mechanism is obtained using inverse kinematics analysis. The velocity analysis expression of the mechanism is derived by deriving the inverse kinematics solution. The model is imported into the mechanical system dynamics analysis software ADAMS and matrix processing analysis software MATLAB to carry out simulation experiments. The correctness of the velocity analysis is verified by comparing the velocity simulation results of the two methods. Then, three singular types of the mechanism are analyzed according to the obtained Jacobian matrix. According to the inverse solution of the mechanism, the reachable workspace of the mechanism is obtained by programming in MATLAB with given mechanism parameters and restriction conditions. Finally, the prototype platform is built. The experimental results show that the exoskeleton hip joint using this parallel mechanism can satisfy the requirement of rotation angle of human hip joint movement, but also can be good to assist patients with leg flexion-extension movement and adduction-abduction movement, and it is helpful to carry out corresponding rehabilitation training. It also has theoretical significance and application value for the research work of human hip exoskeleton parallel mechanism.

ABSTRACT

Aiming at the problem that the composite fault signal of the gearbox is weak and the fault characteristics are difficult to extract under strong noise environment, an improved singular spectrum decomposition (ISSD) method is proposed to extract the composite fault characteristics of the gearbox. Singular spectrum decomposition (SSD) has been proved to have higher decomposition accuracy and can better suppress modal mixing and pseudo component. However, noise has a great influence on it, and it is difficult to extract weak impact components. In order to improve the limitations of SSD, we chose the minimum entropy deconvolution adjustment (MEDA) as the pre-filter of the SSD to preprocess the signal. The main function of the minimum entropy deconvolution adjustment is to reduce noise and enhance the impact component, which can make up for the limitations of SSD. However, the ability of MEDA to reduce noise and enhance the impact signal is greatly affected by its parameter, the filter length. Therefore, to improve the shortcomings of MEDA, a parameter adaptive method based on Cuckoo Search (CS) is proposed. First, construct the objective function as the adaptive function of CS to optimize the MEDA algorithm. Then, the pre-processed signal is decomposed into singular spectral components (SSC) by SSD, and the meaningful components are selected by Correlation coefficient. For the existing modal mixing phenomenon, the SSC component is reconstructed to eliminate the misjudgment of the result. Then, the frequency spectrum analysis is performed to obtain the frequency information for fault diagnosis. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of ISSD are validated by simulation signals and applying to compound faults of a Gear box test rig.

ABSTRACT

AIM: The capability of reducing fibrotic and inflammatory responses in lung tissues represents a gold standard for evaluating the efficacy of therapeutic interventions for treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). A wide variety of therapeutic strategies have been employed in clinic to treat PF, but limited success has been obtained. Apigenin (4, 5, 7-trihydroxyflavone) is a member of flavonoid family that exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrosis effects. In this study, we explore the potential therapeutic effect of apigenin in lung fibrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Apigenin was employed to treat IPF in a bleomycin-induced PF rat model. Apigenin was loaded onto a biodegradable polymer carrier (nanoparticle, NP) to improve its bio-solubility and bio-availability. The properties (e.g. size, apigenin loading and release profile) of the apigenin loaded polymer carrier were well-characterized. In vitro study was performed to assess the impact of apigenin on pulmonary cell viability, growth, as well as inflammatory and pro-fibrosis responses in pulmonary cells. The impact of apigenin on the production of inflammatory cytokines (e.g. TGF-ß, TNF-α) and pro-fibrosis factors in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and pulmonary cells from lung tissues was also investigated. RESULTS: Our results showed, apigenin has anti-fibrosis effect by inhibition fibrosis related cytokines expression. And compared with apigenin in soluble form, the strategic release of apigenin is more effective in inhibiting pulmonary fibrosis and inflammation. CONCLUSION: Our finding suggested that apigenin loaded on polymeric carrier might be an effective treatment for pulmonary fibrosis patients.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to examine the role played by substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) within the dorsal horn of the spinal cord in engagement of antinociception evoked by dexmedetomidine (DEX). Paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) to mechanical stimulation was determined after chronic intrathecal infusion of DEX and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was employed to examine the levels of spinal substance P and CGRP. Our results show that PWT was significantly increased by intrathecal administration of DEX in rats (P < 0.05 vs. vehicle control, n = 20 in each group). Also, intrathecal infusion of DEX significantly decreased the concentrations of substance P and CGRP as compared with vehicle control (P < 0.05 DEX vs. vehicle control, n = 20 in each group). Blocking α2-adrenoreceptors (α2-AR) blunted the decreases of substance P and CGRP levels and the enhancement of PWT evoked by DEX. Additionally, a linear relationship was observed between PWT and the levels of spinal substance P (r = 0.87; P < 0.005) and CGRP (r = 0.85; P < 0.005). Moreover, blocking individual substance P and CGRP receptors amplified PWT without altering substance P and CGRP levels. Thus, DEX plays a role in stimulating α2-AR receptors, which thereby decreases substance P and CGRP levels within the dorsal horn. This contributes to DEX-evoked antinociception.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, the aim was to reveal the relationship of serum IL-6, IL-10 and IL-13 levels in patient with Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection. To elucidate the role of immune mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), we analyzed the cytokine of 112 EV71-infected patients. A significant elevation of serum (interleukin) IL-6, IL-10 and IL-13 levels in patients with EV71 infection compare with Un-EV71 infection HFMD patient and Healthy individuals. The production of inflammatory cytokines was increased with disease clinical stage. In addition, the immunological consequences of these cytokine in patient with EV71 infection showed a downward trend after cure. These data suggested that EV71 infection significantly increased the release of circulating IL-6, IL-10 and IL-13. The systemic inflammatory response may play an important role in the pathogenesis of HFMD. Moreover, this study may be designed to evaluate the potential therapeutic of medicine in the treatment of patients with EV71 infection.
