ABSTRACT

Creating multiple-reusable PBAT/TPS (PT) films presents a novel solution to reduce carbon emissions from disposable packaging, addressing challenges like the high creep of PBAT and the glycerol migration of TPS. Consequently, adopting reactive extrusion to fabricate reversible cross-linking TPS with high shape memory performance, low migration, and homogeneous dispersion in PBAT matrix was a fascinating strategy. Herein, starch, glycerol and CaCl2 (calcium chloride) were extruded to fabricate TPS-Ca with Ca2+ heterodentate coordination structure and confirmed by XPS, 1H NMR and temperature-dependent FTIR. The results of DMA, dynamic rheology, flow activation energy and SEM revealed that TPS-Ca exhibited significant temperature-sensitive reversible properties and robust melt flow capability, enabling micro-nano scale dispersion in PBAT. Noteworthy, PBAT/TPS-Ca (PT-Ca) would recover 100 % length within 20 s by microwave heating after being loaded under the hygrothermal environment. Meanwhile, the migration weight of glycerol decreased from 2.5 % to 1.2 % for the heat-moisture-treated PBAT/TPS (HPT) and PBAT/TPS-Ca (HPTCa). Remarkably, the tensile strength and elongation at the break of HPT-Ca increased to 20.0 MPa and 924 %, respectively, due to reduced stress concentration sites in the phase interface. In summary, our study provides a streamlined strategy for fabricating multiple-reusable PT, offering a sustainable solution to eliminate carbon emissions linked to disposable plastic.

ABSTRACT

Ecofriendly fabrics with antibacterial and anti-adhesion properties have been attracted an increasing attention in recent years. Herein, natural menthol modified polyacrylate (PMCA) antibacterial adhesion agent was synthesized by esterification and polymerisation while natural pterostilbene-grafted-chitosan (PGC) antibacterial agent was prepared through Mannich reaction. The antibacterial and anti-adhesion cotton fabric was fabricated through durable PMCA dip finishing and then layer-by-layer self-assembly of PGC. The results showed that the antibacterial adhesion rates and antibacterial rates of the dual-function cotton fabric against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli reached up to 99.9 %. Its antibacterial adhesion rates improved by 36.1 % and 40.1 % in comparison with those of cotton fabric treated by menthol alone. Meanwhile against S. aureus, the dual-function cotton fabrics improved the antibacterial rates by 56.7 % and 36.4 %, respectively, from those of chitosan- and pterostilbene-treated fabrics. Against E. coli, the improvements were 89.4 % and 24.8 %, respectively. After 20 household washings, the dual-function cotton fabric maintained >80 % of its original anti-adhesion and antibacterial rates against both species. The dual-function cotton fabric also possessed safe and excellent wearability.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether the time interval between total thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy influences clinical outcomes in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). This study aims to evaluate the impact of the timing to initiate RAI therapy on the response in PTC patients. METHODS: We retrospectively included 405 patients who underwent total thyroidectomy and subsequent RAI therapy at two tertiary hospitals in southwest China. Patients were categorized into two groups based on the interval between thyroidectomy and initial RAI therapy, that is, an early group (interval ≤90 days, n = 317) and a delayed group (interval >90 days, n = 88). Responses to RAI therapy were classified as excellent, indeterminate, biochemical incomplete, or structural incomplete. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with a nonexcellent response. RESULTS: Excellent responses were observed in 77.3% of the early group and 83.0% of the delayed group (P = 0.252). No significant impact of RAI therapy timing was also observed across all American Thyroid Association risk classification categories. These findings persisted when patients were analyzed separately according to RAI dose (intermediate-dose group: 3.7 GBq [n = 332]; high-activity group: ≥5.5 GBq [n = 73]), further subdivided by the timing of RAI therapy. Multivariate analysis identified lymph node dissection, RAI dose, and stimulated thyroglobulin as independent risk factors for excellent response (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The timing of initial RAI therapy following surgery did not significantly affect outcomes in patients with PTC.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: We aimed to report the latest and largest pooled analyses and evidence updates to assess the effectiveness of telemedicine interventions for self-management (DSM) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, and Web of Science in December 2023. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of adults (≥18 years of age) diagnosed with T2DM where the intervention was the application of telemedicine. The Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment was used to evaluate quality. The study's main outcome indicators were glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and diabetes self-management (DSM) capacity. Results: A total of 17 eligible articles, comprising 20 studies and 1,456 patients (734 in the intervention group and 722 in the control group), were included in the evidence synthesis. The baseline characteristics of both groups were similar in all outcomes. Comprehensive analyses showed post-intervention decreases in HbA1c, 2-h postprandial glucose, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, increases in Diabetes Self- Care activities, DSM competencies based on dietary and medication adherence, and improvements in overall DSM scores, all of which were statistically significant. While no statistically significant differences were observed in body mass index, lipids, and other DSM dimensions. Based on subgroup analyses, app-based experimental interventions targeting under 60 years old populations in Asia and North America were found to be more effective and less heterogeneity in the short term (<6 months of intervention). Conclusion: Telemedicine interventions may assist patients with T2DM in enhancing their DSM and improving their HbA1c levels. Clinician can use various telemedicine interventions to enhance DSM in T2DM patients, considering local circumstances. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The relationships between preoperative cervical spine range of motion (ROM) and postoperative cervical sagittal alignment (CSA), and clinical outcomes after laminoplasty (LMP) have been widely studied. However, the impact of ROM changes on postoperative CSA and clinical outcomes after LMP remains unclear. Herein, patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) were retrospectively analyzed to explore the association between postoperative cervical ROM changes and CSA and surgical outcomes. METHODS: Patients who underwent cervical LMP at our hospital between January 2019 to June 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. CSA parameters were measured before the surgery and at the final follow-up. Loss of cervical lordosis (LCL) was defined as preoperative cervical lordosis (CL) - postoperative CL. An increase in the cervical sagittal vertical axis (I-cSVA) was defined as postoperative cervical sagittal vertical axis (cSVA) - preoperative cSVA. We defined the changes in cervical flexion range of motion (△Flex ROM, preoperative Flex ROM minus postoperative Flex ROM) > 10° as L- Flex ROM group, and △Flex ROM ≤ 10° as S- Flex ROM group. Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score and visual analog score (VAS) were used to assess the surgical outcomes. RESULTS: The study comprised 74 patients and the average follow-up period was 31.83 months. CL, total ROM, and Flex ROM decreased and cSVA increased after cervical LMP. LCL and I-cSVA were positively correlated with △Flex. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that a decrease in the Flex ROM was a risk factor for LCL and I-cSVA after LMP. LCL and I-cSVA were higher in the L-Flex ROM group than in the S-Flex ROM group. Postoperative JOA and the JOA recovery rate were worse in the L-Flex ROM group than in the S-Flex ROM group. CONCLUSIONS: Cervical total and Flex ROM decreased after cervical LMP. The reduction of Flex ROM was associated with LCL and I-cSVA after surgery. The preservation of cervical Flex ROM helps maintain CSA after LMP. Therefore, more attention should be paid to maintaining cervical ROM to obtain good CSA and surgical effects after cervical LMP.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the potential mechanism of action in the intervention of acute lung injury(ALI) based on the blood entry components of Ganke Granules in rats and in conjunction with network pharmacology, molecular docking, and animal experimental validation. The blood entry components of Ganke Granules in rats were imported into the SwissTargetPrediction platform to predict drug targets, and ALI-related targets were collected from the disease database. Intersections were taken, and protein-protein interaction(PPI) networks were constructed to screen the core targets, followed by Gene Ontology(GO) functional and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and gnomes(KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses. A "blood entry components-target-pathway-disease" network was constructed, and the core components for disease intervention based on their topological parameters were screened. Molecular docking was used to predict the binding ability of the core components to key targets. The key targets of Ganke Granules in the intervention of ALI were verified by the lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced ALI mouse model. Through PPI topological parameter analysis, the top six key targets of STAT3, SRC, HSP90AA1, MAPK3, HRAS, and MAPK1 related to ALI were obtained. GO functional analysis showed that it was mainly related to ERK1 and ERK2 cascade, inflammatory response, and response to LPS. KEGG analysis showed that the main enrichment pathways were MAPK, neutrophil extracellular trap(NET) formation, and so on. Six core components(schizantherin B, schisandrin, besigomsin, harpagoside, isotectorigenin, and trachelanthamine) were filtered out by the "blood entry components-target-pathway-disease" network based on the analysis of topological parameters. Molecular docking results showed that the six core components and Tectoridin with the highest content in the granules had a high affinity with the key targets of MAPK3, SRC, MAPK1, and STAT3. In vivo experiment results showed that compared with the model group, Ganke Granules could effectively alleviate LPS-induced histopathological injury in the lungs of mice and reduce the percentage of inflammatory infiltration. The total protein content, nitric oxide(NO) level, myeloperoxidase(MPO) content, tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), gamma interferon(IFN-γ), interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß), interleukin-6(IL-6), vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), and chemokine(C-X-C motif) ligand 1(CXCL1) chemokines in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF) were decreased, and the expression levels of lymphocyte antigen 6G(Ly6G), citrullinated histones 3(Cit-H3), and phosphorylated proteins SRC, ERK1/2, and STAT3 in lung tissue were significantly down-regulated. In conclusion, Ganke Granules could effectively inhibit the inflammatory response of ALI induced by LPS, protect lung tissue, regulate the release of inflammatory factors, and inhibit neutrophil infiltration and NET formation, and the mechanism of action may be related to inhibiting the activation of SRC/ERK1/2/STAT3 signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Free fatty acids (FFAs) are established risk factors for various cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Elevated FFAs can trigger inflammatory response, which may be associated with the occurrence of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in cardiac surgery. In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate the association between circulating FFA and the incidence of ARDS, as well as the length of ICU stay, in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS: We conducted a single-center, prospective, observational study among patients undergoing off-pump CABG. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of ARDS within 6 days after off-pump CABG. Serum FFA were measured at baseline and 24 h post-procedure, and the difference (Δ-FFA) was calculated. RESULTS: A total of 180 patients were included in the primary analysis. The median FFA was 2.3 mmol/L (quartile 1 [Q1]-Q3, 1.4-3.2) at baseline and 1.5 mmol/L (Q1-Q3, 0.9-2.3) 24 h after CABG, with a Δ-FFA of 0.6 mmol/L (Q1-Q3, -0.1 to 1.6). Patients with elevated Δ-FFA levels had a significantly higher ARDS occurrence (55.6% vs. 22.2%; P < 0.001). Elevated Δ-FFA after off-pump CABG correlated with a significantly lower PaO2/FiO2 ratio, prolonged mechanical ventilation, and extended length of ICU stay. The area under the curve (AUC) of Δ-FFA for predicting ARDS (AUC, 0.758; 95% confidence interval, 0.686-0.831) significantly exceeded the AUC of postoperative FFA (AUC, 0.708; 95% CI 0.628-0.788; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Elevated Δ-FFA levels correlated with ARDS following off-pump CABG. Monitoring FFA may assist in identifying high-risk patients for ARDS, facilitating timely interventions to improve clinical outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Retinoschisin (RS1) is a secretory protein specifically localized to the extracellular domains in both the lateral retina and the pineal gland (PG). However, the functions of RS1 in the pineal body are poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, in this study, we undertook histochemical, ultrastructural, and western blotting analyses of the PG in rats and RS1-knock-in (RS1-KI) transgenic. We found that RS1 plays a key role in pineal gland calcification (PGC) in mice through both extracellular and intracellular pathways. RS1 was clustered around the cell membrane or intracellularly in pinealocytes, actively participating in the exchange of calcium and thereby mediating PGC. Additionally, RS1 deposition is essential for maintaining PGC architecture in the intercellular space of the adult PG. In RS1-KI mice with a nonsense mutation (p.Y65X) in the Rs1-domain of RS1, the Rs1-domain is chaotically dispersed in pinealocytes and the intercellular region of the PG. This prevents RS1 from binding calcified spots and forming calcified nodules, ultimately leading to the accumulation of calcareous lamellae in microvesicles. Additionally, RS1 was observed to colocalize with connexin-36, thereby modulating intercellular communication in the PG of both rats and mice. Our study revealed for the first time that RS1 is essential for maintaining PGC architecture and that it colocalizes with connexin 36 to modulate intercellular communication in the PG. These findings provide novel insights into the function of the RS1 gene in the PG.

Fruit texture and storage properties of various apple varieties exhibit significant variation. The rate of fruit softening post-harvest plays a crucial role in determining fruit quality and shelf life. This research utilized four apple varieties as test subjects to investigate the internal factors influencing fruit texture changes among different varieties. By monitoring changes in relevant physiological indicators during the post-harvest texture softening process, the study examined fruit quality, cell wall material content, hydrolase activity, and gene transcription levels during storage of 'Orin', 'RX', 'RXH', and 'Envy' apples. Initial fruit softening was primarily linked to heightened post-harvest fruit respiration intensity, ethylene production, and rapid amylase activity. Subsequent softening was associated with increased activity of water-soluble pectin (WSP), cellulose (CEL), and other hydrolases. With the extension of the storage period, the fruit cells of the four varieties became more loosely arranged, resulting in larger intercellular gaps. Variations in WSP and cellulose content, CEL activity, and relative expression of Mdß-gal were observed among the different apple varieties, potentially accounting for the disparities in fruit texture.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a common and difficult-to-treat neuropathic pain disorder in clinical practice. Previous studies have shown that Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) modulates the activation of the NF-κB pathway to affect neuropathic pain in rats. Voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) are known to play an important role in neuropathic pain electrical activity. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether TLR4 can regulate Nav1.3 through the TRAF6/NF-κB p65 pathway after infraorbital nerve chronic constriction injury (ION-CCI). STUDY DESIGN: ION-CCI modeling was performed on SD (Sprague Dawley) rats. To verify the success of the modeling, we need to detect the mechanical pain threshold and ATF3. Then, detecting the expression of TLR4, TRAF6, NF-κB p65, p-p65, and Nav1.3 in rat TG. Subsequently, investigate the role of TLR4/TRAF6/NF-κB pathway in ION-CCI model by intrathecal injections of LPS-rs (TLR4 antagonist), C25-140 (TRAF6 inhibitor), and PDTC (NF-κB p65 inhibitor). RESULTS: ION-CCI surgery decreased the mechanical pain threshold of rats and increased the expression of ATF3, TLR4, TRAF6, NF-κB p-p65 and Nav1.3, but there was no difference in NF-κB p65 expression. After inject antagonist or inhibitor of the TLR4/TRAF6/NF-κB pathway, the expression of Nav1.3 was decreased and mechanical pain threshold was increased. CONCLUSION: In the rat model of ION-CCI, TLR4 in the rat trigeminal ganglion regulates Nav1.3 through the TRAF6/NF-κB p65 pathway, and TLR4 antagonist alleviates neuropathic pain in ION-CCI rats.

ABSTRACT

Identifying infected stones is crucial due to their rapid growth and high recurrence rate. Our study presents the calcium-magnesium dual-responsive aggregation-induced emission (AIE)-active probe TCM-5COOH, distinctively engineered to distinguish high-threat infection calculi from metabolic stones. Upon incorporation of flexible alkyl carboxyl group, TCM-5COOH featuring five carboxyl moieties demonstrates excellent water solubility and enhanced penetration into porous infectious stones. The robust chelation of TCM-5COOH with stone surface-abundant Ca2+ and Mg2+inhibits vibrational relaxation, thus triggering intense AIE signals. Remarkably, the resulting complex exhibits high insolubility, effectively anchoring within the porous structure of the infection calculi and offering prolonged illumination. Jobs' plot method revealed similar responses characteristics for Ca2+ and Mg2+, with a 1:2 coordination number for both ions. Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) results demonstrated higher enthalpy change (ΔH) and lower entropy change (ΔS) for the reaction, indicating enhanced selectivity compared to TCM-4COOH lacking the alkyl carboxyl group. Synchrotron X-ray absorption fine spectroscopy (XAFS) validated TCM-5COOH's interaction with Ca2+ and Mg2+ at the micro level. This dual-responsive probe excels in identifying infectious and metabolic calculi, compatible with endoscopic modalities and laser excitation, thereby prompting clinical visualization and diagnostic assessment. BACKGROUND: Frailty is recognized as a surrogate for physiological age and has been established as a valid and independent predictor of postoperative morbidity, mortality, and complications. ERAS can enhance surgical safety by minimizing stress responses in frail patients, enabling surgeons to discharge patients earlier. However, the question of whether and to what extent the frailty impacts the post-ERAS outcomes in older patients remains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An evidence-based ERAS program was implemented in our center from January 2019. This is a prospective cohort study of patients aged ≥75 years who underwent open transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) for degenerative spine disease from April 2019 to October 2021. Frailty was assessed with the Fried frailty scale (FP scale), and patients were categorized as non/prefrail (FP 0-2) or frail (FP ≥ 3). The preoperative variables, operative data, postoperative outcomes and follow-up information were compared between the two groups. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for 90-day major complications and prolonged length of hospital stay (LOS) after surgery. RESULTS: A total of 245 patients (age of 79.8 ± 3.4 yr) who had a preoperative FP score recorded and underwent scheduled TLIF surgery were included in the final analysis. Comparisons between non-frail and prefrail/frail patients revealed no significant difference in age, sex, and surgery-related variables. Even after adjusting for multiple comparisons, the association between Fried frailty and ADL-dependency, IADL-dependency, and malnutrition remained significant. Preoperative frailty was associated with increased rates of postoperative adverse events. A higher CCI grade was an independent predictor for 90-day major complications, while Fried frailty and MNA-SF scores <12 were predictive of poor postoperative recovery. CONCLUSION: Frail older patients had more adverse post-ERAS outcomes after TLIF compared to non/prefrail older patients. Continued research and multidisciplinary collaboration will be essential to refine and optimize protocols for surgical care in frail older adults.

AIMS: This study aimed to unravel the dehydration status of patients with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) to facilitate the understanding of dehydration in CVST. METHODS: This was a multicenter retrospective study and three populations were recruited, namely, patients with CVST, CVST mimics, and healthy subjects. Blood samples were obtained 1-2 days after admission to assess dehydration status. Stata 15.1 was performed for statistical analysis. RESULTS: A total of 208 patients were diagnosed with CVST, 237 with CVST mimics, and 200 healthy individuals were enrolled. The urine specific gravity (USG, 1.020 [1.014, 1.029] vs. 1.017 [1.011, 1.021]) was higher in patients with CVST than in those with mimics (all p < 0.001). The percentage of USG >1.03 was also higher in CVST (22.6%) than in its mimics (6.3%, p < 0.001). With the development of CVST, USG (acute vs. sub-acute vs. chronic, 1.022 [1.015, 1.033] vs. 1.021 [1.015, 1.031] vs. 1.019 [1.014, 1.025]) decreased. All dehydration-related markers could not differentiate CVST from its mimics and healthy populations, and they were not associated with CVST severity and prognosis (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: High levels of USG, especially USG >1.013, were more common in patients with CVST. Dehydration-related indices could not characterize CVST and were not associated with CVST severity and prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Laplacian embedding (LE) aims to project high-dimensional input data samples, which often contain nonlinear structures, into a low-dimensional space. However, existing distance functions used in the embedding space fail to provide discriminative representations for real-world datasets, especially those related to text analysis or image processing. Cosine similarity measurements are advantageous in dealing with sparse data but are fragile to the impact of outliers and noise from samples or data features. In this work, we propose robust spherical LE (RS-LE), a powerful method that builds the LE on a novel metric that unifies the Euclidean distance and cosine similarity in a spherical space using a robust lp,p -norm. We introduce an efficient iterative algorithm, the proximal alternating linearized minimization (ALM) method, to solve the difficult optimization problem that arises from the new metric, which is neither convex nor smooth. This algorithm allows the solution to achieve both global and objective convergence. Our findings are presented in rigorous theoretical analysis and validated in experiments.

ABSTRACT

Lead (Pb) contamination in wheat grain is of great concern, especially in North China. Atmospheric deposition is a major contributor to Pb accumulation in wheat grain. Screening low Pb accumulating wheat varieties has been an effective method for addressing Pb contamination in wheat grain. However, identifying wheat varieties with low Pb accumulation based on foliar uptake of atmospheric Pb has been neglected. Therefore, two field trials with distinct atmospheric Pb deposition were conducted to screen for stable varieties with low Pb accumulation. It was verified that YB700 and CH58, which have high thousand-grain weights and stable low Pb accumulation in field 1 (0.19 and 0.13 mg kg-1) and field 2 (0.17 and 0.20 mg kg-1), respectively, were recommended for cultivation in atmospheric Pb contaminated farmlands in North China. Furthermore, indoor experiments were conducted to investigate Pb uptake by the roots and leaves of different wheat varieties. Our findings indicate that Pb accumulation in different wheat varieties is primarily influenced by foliar Pb uptake rather than root Pb uptake. Interestingly, there was a positive correlation (p < 0.05) between the Pb concentrations in leaves and the stomatal width and trichome length of the adaxial epidermal surface. Additionally, there is a positive correlation (p < 0.01) between the Pb concentration in the wheat grain and trichome length. In conclusion, the screening of wheat varieties with narrower stomatal widths or shorter trichomes based on foliar uptake pathways is an effective strategy for ensuring food safety in areas contaminated by atmospheric Pb.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the cervical sagittal profile after the spontaneous compensation of global sagittal imbalance and analyze the associations between the changes in cervical sagittal alignment and spinopelvic parameters. METHODS: In this retrospective radiographic study, we analyzed 90 patients with degenerative lumbar stenosis (DLS) and sagittal imbalance who underwent short lumbar fusion (imbalance group). We used 60 patients with DLS and sagittal balance as the control group (balance group). Patients in the imbalance group were also divided into two groups according to the preoperative PI: low PI group (≤ 50°), high PI group (PI > 50°). We measured the spinal sagittal alignment parameters on the long-cassette standing lateral radiographs of the whole spine. We compared the changes of spinal sagittal parameters between pre-operation and post-operation. We observed the relationships between the changes in cervical profile and spinopelvic parameters. RESULTS: Sagittal vertical axis (SVA) occurred spontaneous compensation (p = 0.000) and significant changes were observed in cervical lordosis (CL) (p = 0.000) and cervical sagittal vertical axis (cSVA) (p = 0.023) after surgery in the imbalance group. However, there were no significant differences in the radiographic parameters from pre-operation to post-operation in the balance group. The variations in CL were correlated with the variations in SVA (R = 0.307, p = 0.041). The variations in cSVA were correlated with the variations in SVA (R=-0.470, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Cervical sagittal profile would have compensatory changes after short lumbar fusion. The spontaneous decrease in CL would occur in patients with DLS after the spontaneous compensation of global sagittal imbalance following one- or two-level lumbar fusion. The changes of cervical sagittal profile were related to the extent of the spontaneous compensation of SVA.

ABSTRACT

In virtual reality applications, in addition to visual feedback, real objects can be used as props for virtual objects to provide passive haptic feedback, which greatly enhances user immersion. Usually, real object props are not one-to-one correspondence with virtual objects. Haptic retargeting technique is proposed to establish the virtual-real correspondence by introducing an offset between the virtual hand and the real hand. Sometimes, the offset is too large to cause user discomfort, and it is necessary to introduce a reset between two haptic retargeting operations to force the virtual hand and the real hand to coincide in order to eliminate the offset. However, too many resets can interfere with this immersion. To address this problem, we propose a haptic retargeting method based on proxy importance calculation using multiple props in virtual reality. The concept of proxy importance for props is introduced first, and then a proxy importance based prop selection and placement method for moving virtual objects are proposed. We also improve the performance of our method by using the props' weighted proxy importance strategy for multi-user collaboration. Compared to the state-of-the-art methods, our method significantly reduces the number of resets, the task completion time, hand movement distances, and task load without the cost of cybersickness in the single-user task. In the multi-user collaborative task, our method also achieves significant improvement using the strategy that weights the proxy importance of the props.

ABSTRACT

The quantity and complexity of environmental data show exponential growth in recent years. High-quality big data analysis is critical for performing a sophisticated characterization of the complex network of environmental pollution. Machine learning (ML) has been employed as a powerful tool for decoupling the complexities of environmental big data based on its remarkable fitting ability. Yet, due to the knowledge gap across different subjects, ML concepts and algorithms have not been well-popularized among researchers in environmental sustainability. In this context, we introduce a new research paradigm-"ChatGPT + ML + Environment", providing an unprecedented chance for environmental researchers to reduce the difficulty of using ML models. For instance, each step involved in applying ML models to environmental sustainability, including data preparation, model selection and construction, model training and evaluation, and hyper-parameter optimization, can be easily performed with guidance from ChatGPT. We also discuss the challenges and limitations of using this research paradigm in the field of environmental sustainability. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of "secondary training" for future application of "ChatGPT + ML + Environment".

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress can lead to uncontrolled glucose metabolism and, thus, diabetes. Auricularia auricula-judae (Bull.) Quél. polysaccharides possess biological activities, such as antioxidant and hypoglycemic effects, but their mechanism of their acid hydrolysates on oxidative stress-injured glucose metabolism disorders is unclear. PURPOSE: Using diabetic mice, we investigated the effect of the acid hydrolysate of polysaccharides from Auricularia auricula-judae (Bull.) Quél. on improving diabetes. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The structural information of sample polysaccharides was measured by high performance gel permeation chromatography, nuclear magnetic resolution, and high performance liquid chromatography. The diabetic model was established by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. For eight consecutive weeks, the mice were orally administered sample polysaccharides (100, 200, and 300 mg/kg b.w. per day) for intervention. The improvement effect of the samples on diabetes was explored by detecting the changes in biochemical indicators in mice, and the underlying mechanism was studied by transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis. RESULTS: The results showed that acid hydrolysate of Auricularia auricula-judae (Bull.) Quél. polysaccharides consisted mainly of mannose, xylose, glucuronic acid, and glucose; its weight-averaged molecular weight was 6.3842 × 104 Dalton, its number average molecular weight was 2.9594 × 104 Dalton; and the molecule contained α-Glc(1→4)-, ß-Glc(1→3)-, and ß-Man(1→4)-linked glycosidic bonds. A total of 100 mg/kg b.w. per day sample was the best intervention concentration. After eight weeks of intervention, the sample polysaccharides significantly reduced dynamic blood glucose and serum lipids, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities, promoted glucagon like peptide-1 and insulin secretion, improved insulin sensitivity and alleviated insulin resistance in diabetic mice. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses showed that sample polysaccharides was able to ameliorate disorders of glucose metabolism by modulating gene expression such as glucokinase; and modulate the state of oxidative stress in mice in vivo by regulating the glutathione metabolism pathway. CONCLUSION: Acid hydrolysate of Auricularia auricula-judae (Bull.) Quél. polysaccharides improved glucose metabolism disorders by slowing down the oxidative stress injury in mice, thereby alleviating diabetes. This study provided a basis for determining the underlying mechanism of the antidiabetic effect of Auricularia auricula-judae (Bull.) Quél. polysaccharides, which would significantly improve the deep development and application of these materials in diabetes control.
