ABSTRACT

Opioids are powerful analgesics; however, their significant systemic adverse effects and the need for frequent administration restrict their use. Nalbuphine (NA) is a κ-agonist narcotic with limited adverse effects, but needs to be frequently administrated due to its short elimination half-life. Whereas sebacoyl dinalbuphine ester (SDE) is a NA prodrug, which can effectively prolong the analgesic effect, but lacks immediate pain relief. Therefore, in this study, a rapid and sustained local delivery formulation to introduce NA and SDE directly into surgical sites was developed. An amphiphilic nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) poloxamer 407 (P407) gel (NLC-Gel) was developed to permit concurrent delivery of hydrophobic SDE from the NLC core and hydrophilic NA from P407, offering a dual rapid and prolonged analgesic effect. Benefiting from the thermal-sensitive characteristic of P407, the formulation can be injected in liquid phase and instantly transit into gel at wound site. NLC-Gel properties, including particle size, drug release, rheology, and stability, were assessed. In vivo evaluation using a rat spinal surgery model highlighted the effect of the formulation through pain behavior test and hematology analysis. NLC-Gels demonstrated an analgesic effect comparable with that of commercial intramuscular injected SDE formulation (IM SDE), with only 15 % of the drug dosage. The inclusion of supplemental NA in the exterior gel (PA12-Gel + NA) provided rapid drug onset owing to swift NA dispersion, addressing acute pain within hours along with prolonged analgesic effects. Our findings suggest that this amphiphilic formulation significantly enhanced postoperative pain management in terms of safety and efficacy.

ABSTRACT

The escalating development and improvement of gas sensing ability in industrial equipment, or "machine olfactory", propels the evolution of gas sensors toward enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, stability, power efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and longevity. Two-dimensional (2D) materials, distinguished by their atomic-thin profile, expansive specific surface area, remarkable mechanical strength, and surface tunability, hold significant potential for addressing the intricate challenges in gas sensing. However, a comprehensive review of 2D materials-based gas sensors for specific industrial applications is absent. This review delves into the recent advances in this field and highlights the potential applications in industrial machine olfaction. The main content encompasses industrial scenario characteristics, fundamental classification, enhancement methods, underlying mechanisms, and diverse gas sensing applications. Additionally, the challenges associated with transitioning 2D material gas sensors from laboratory development to industrialization and commercialization are addressed, and future-looking viewpoints on the evolution of next-generation intelligent gas sensory systems in the industrial sector are prospected.

ABSTRACT

Microcrystalline cellulose was modified by TEMPO oxidation combined with ultrasound to prepare modified cellulose-based emulsion. The effect of different emulsion concentration on gel properties and protein conformation of surimi was investigated. The results showed the length and width of microcrystalline cellulose were reduced, and a large amount of -COOH was introduced into modified cellulose. Direct addition of flaxseed oil decreased the gel strength and WHC from 3640.49 g·mm and 76.94% to 2702.95 g·mm and 75.89%, respectively, while 5% modified cellulose-based emulsion could improve the gel properties of surimi. Surimi gel containing 5% emulsion had the highest hydrophobic interaction, disulfide bond and ß-sheet content. Moreover, protein network structure was the densest in 5% emulsion group. Therefore, modified cellulose-based emulsion could be used to compensating for the negative impact of direct addition of flaxseed oil on surimi, which provided a new idea for the development of healthy and new emulsified surimi products.

In this study, to understand the seasonal dynamics of air-sea exchange and its regulation mechanisms, we investigated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at the air-sea interface in the western Taiwan Strait in combination with measurements and machine learning (ML) predictions. For 3-ring PAHs and most of 4- to 6-ring, volatilization and deposition fluxes were observed, respectively. Seasonal variations in air-sea exchange flux suggest the influence of monsoon transitions. Results of interpretable ML approach (XGBoost) indicated that volatilization of 3-ring PAHs was significantly controlled by dissolved PAH concentrations (contributed 24.0 %), and the gaseous deposition of 4- to 6-ring PAHs was related to more contaminated air masses originating from North China during the northeast monsoon. Henry's law constant emerged as a secondary factor, influencing the intensity of air-sea exchange, particularly for low molecular weight PAHs. Among environmental parameters, notably high wind speed emerges as the primary factor and biological pump's depletion of PAHs in surface seawater amplifies the gaseous deposition process. The distinct dynamics of exchanges at the air-water interface for PAHs in the western TWS can be attributed to variations in primary emission intensities, biological activity, and the inconsistent pathways of long-range atmospheric transport, particularly within the context of the monsoon transition.

ABSTRACT

The sluggish kinetics and inferior stability of oxygen electrocatalyst in rechargeable zinc air battery (ZAB) hamper its industrialization. In this work, we activate cobalt telluride (CoTe) by introduction of metallic cobalt (Co) to modulate the work function to facilitate the electron transfer from Co to CoTe during oxygen catalysis; additionally, the three-dimensional porous carbon nanosheets (3DPC) are invited to reduce the resistance towards electrolyte/oxygen diffusion. Thereby, Co-CoTe@3DPC only demands 280 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm-2 under alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) condition, relatively lower than commercial iridium oxides (IrO2); besides, the operando electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicates a better resistance towards surface reconstruction than Co@3DPC leading to a superior stability. A Pt-like oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance, half-wave potential associated with kinetic current density, is achieved for Co-CoTe@3DPC. A maximum power density of 203 mW cm-2 is achieved and sustains for 800 h. Furthermore, the all-solid-state ZAB offers 97 mW cm-2. Theoretical calculation suggests that the incorporation of metallic Co to CoTe maintains the superb ORR activity and promotes the OER catalysis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the renal fat deposition on Dixon-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to explore the predictive value of renal fat biomarkers of magnetic resonance (MR-RFBs) for early kidney damage in obesity. METHODS: This prospective study included 56 obese volunteers and 47 non-obese healthy volunteers. All volunteers underwent renal magnetic resonance examinations. The differences in MR-RFBs [including renal proton density fat fraction (PDFF), renal sinus fat volume (RSFV), and perirenal fat thickness (PRFT)] measured on Dixon-based MRI between the obese and non-obese volunteers were analyzed using a general linear model, taking sex, age, diabetes, and hypertension as covariates. The relationship between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and demographic, laboratory, and imaging parameters in obese volunteers was examined by correlation analysis. RESULTS: Obese volunteers had higher MR-RFBs than non-obese volunteers after controlling for confounders (all p < 0.001). Renal PDFF (r = - 0.383; p = 0.004), RSFV (r = - 0.368; p = 0.005), and PRFT (r = - 0.451; p < 0.001) were significantly negatively correlated with eGFR in obesity. After adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension, visceral adipose tissue, subcutaneous adipose tissue, renal PDFF, and RSFV, PRFT remained independently negatively associated with eGFR (ß = - 0.587; p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: All MR-RFBs are negatively correlated with eGFR in obesity. The MR-RFBs, especially PRFT, may have predictive value for early kidney damage in obesity.

The fertilization rate is an important index to evaluate the reproductive capacity of hens, which is mainly affected by semen quality, timing of artificial insemination (AI), and the ability to store sperm. A high sperm storage (SS) capacity can extend the interval, reduce the frequency, and decrease the labor costs of AI. However, relatively few studies have investigated the SS capacity of hens. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to identify factors influencing the SS capacity of Guangxi partridge chickens and to explore the impact of the sperm count in different sections of the oviduct and sperm storage tubules (SSTs), in addition to the number and surface area of SSTs on SS capacity at different time points after AI. We found that SS capacity was positively correlated to the egg production rate (P < 0.01) and body length (P < 0.05). On post-AI days 5, 10, and 15, the sperm count was higher in uterus-vagina junction (UVJ) than the magnum, isthmus, and infundibulum (P < 0.01), but gradually decreased over time. Also, the duration of SS and the sperm count of the UVJ was greater in the high SS group than the low SS group (P < 0.05). Histopathological analysis of the UVJ showed that the number and surface area of the SSTs (P < 0.01), as well as the proportion of SSTs containing sperm, were greater in the high SS group at all time points post AI (P < 0.01), while the proportion of SSTs containing sperm gradually decreased over time. Collectively, these results highlight the potential for selective breeding of SS capacity and show that SS capacity is related to laying performance and body length of Guangxi partridge hens. In addition, SS capacity was positively correlated to the surface area of SSTs and the proportion containing sperm. A greater sperm count stored in the UVJ was correlated to more sperm transported to the infundibulum and subsequent greater SS capacity of hens.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated gender differences in health-risk behaviour patterns among young adults and assessed the associations of anxiety and depression with these patterns. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1740 young Chinese adults aged 18-24 years. Latent class analysis (LCA) and multinomial logistic regression were conducted to identify the clusters of health-risk behaviours and their associations with anxiety and depression. Three common patterns were found for both genders: physical inactivity, substance use, and insufficient fruit intake (5.7% for males [M] and 11.6% for females [F]); a sedentary lifestyle only (48.4% for M and 48.9% for F); and a sedentary lifestyle, substance use, and an unhealthy diet (7.6% for M and 20.0% for F). Additionally, two additional unique patterns were found: physical inactivity and unhealthy diet in males (38.3%) and physical inactivity and insufficient fruit intake in females (19.6%). Sociodemographic variables exert different effects on health-risk behaviour patterns as a function of gender. Lower anxiety levels (odds ratio [OR]: 0.892; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.823-0.966) and greater depression levels (OR: 1.074; 95% CI: 1.008-1.143) were associated with a sedentary lifestyle, substance use, and unhealthy diet class only in female young adults compared with a sedentary-only class. These findings underscore the need for the implementation of targeted interventions based on gender differences.

ABSTRACT

The poor compatibility with nonpolar lubricant still hinders the application of carbon dots (CDs) in lubrication. In addition, research proves that the existence of ionic structure and active groups on CDs are conducive to their lubricity. In order to obtain the ionic structures and good oil compatibility synchronously, a kind of ionic nitrogen-doped CDs (NCDs) was synthesized via the alkylation of nitrogen in NCDs and anion exchange. The new material could exhibit good tribological performance as poly alpha olefins (PAO4) additives with low addition. Moreover, an ionic liquid, [N44HH][DEHP], with the same anion was chosen as a comparison to investigate the role of NCD cations. The surface analyses demonstrate that NCD cations and phosphate ester anions adsorb on the friction interface to play a synergistic lubrication role during the friction process, which could generate a superior carbon-based tribofilm.

Achieving optimal nutritional status in patients with penetrating Crohn's disease (CD) is crucial in preparing for surgical resection. However, there is a dearth of literature comparing the efficacy of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) versus exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) in optimizing postoperative outcomes. Hence, we conducted a case-matched study to assess the impact of preoperative EEN versus TPN on the incidence of postoperative adverse outcomes, encompassing overall postoperative morbidity and stoma formation, among penetrating CD patients undergoing bowel surgery. From December 1, 2012 to December 1, 2021, a retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary center to enroll consecutive patients with penetrating CD who underwent surgical resection. Propensity score matching (PSM) was utilized to compare the incidence of postoperative adverse outcomes. Furthermore, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the risk factors associated with adverse outcomes. The study included 510 patients meeting the criteria. Among them, 101 patients in the TPN group showed significant improvements in laboratory indicators at the time of surgery compared to pre-optimization levels. After matching, TPN was increased occurrence of postoperative adverse outcomes (92.2% vs. 64.1%, p = 0.001) when compared to EEN group. In the multivariate analysis, TPN showed a significantly higher odds ratio for adverse outcomes than EEN (OR = 4.241; 95% CI 1.567-11.478; p = 0.004). The study revealed that penetrating CD patients who were able to fulfill their nutritional requirements through EEN exhibited superior nutritional and surgical outcomes in comparison to those who received TPN.

The emergence of solid-state battery technology presents a potential solution to the dissolution challenges of the high-capacity small molecule quinone redox systems. Among the various available solid-state electrolytes, the argyrodite-type Li6PS5Cl is regarded as one of the most promising system due to high room-temperature ionic conductivity and low-temperature processability. Nonetheless, the successful integration of Li6PS5Cl and quinone redox systems into solid-state organic lithium metal batteries remains elusive due to their inherent reactivity. Here, a library of quinone derivatives is selected as model electrode materials to ascertain the critical descriptors governing the (electro)chemical compatibility and subsequently the performances of Li6PS5Cl-based solid-state organic Li-metal cells. Compatibility is attained if the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of the quinone derivative is sufficiently higher than the highest occupied molecular orbital level of Li6PS5Cl. The energy difference is demonstrated to be critical in ensuring chemical compatibility during composite electrode preparation and enable high-efficiency operation of solid-state organic Li-metal cells. Considering these findings, a general principle is proposed for the selection of quinone derivatives to be integrated with Li6PS5Cl, and two solid-state organic Li-metal cells, based on 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzoquinone and 2,3,5,6-tetraamino-1,4-benzoquinone, are successfully developed and tested for the first time. Validating critical factors for the design of organic battery electrode materials is expected to pave the way for advancing the development of high-efficiency and long cycle life solid-state organic batteries based on sulfides electrolytes. BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is a common malignant tumor with a low survival rate after metastasis. Current treatments have not proven to effectively increase patient survival rates. Immunotherapy is a promising new treatment approach, however, immune target therapy has not shown satisfactory results. This study aims to provide new insights and evidence for the use of immunotherapy in osteosarcoma, based on a comprehensive analysis of gene expression data from databases. METHODS: Gene expression and GSAV analysis were conducted on samples from patients with metastatic and non-metastatic osteosarcoma in the TARGET and GEO databases to identify relevant genes. These genes were further analyzed using GO, KEGG, GSVA, correlation analysis, and immune microenvironment scoring techniques. The tissue location of gene expression was confirmed through single-cell analysis. Validation of gene expression patterns was performed using polymerase chain reaction, western blot, and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The study identified FUCA1 and NCKAP1L as significantly enriched in non-metastatic osteosarcoma, with higher expression associated with better patient survival rates. Gene function enrichment was primarily related to immune functions, with positive correlations to macrophage phagocytosis, antigen presentation, and macrophage polarization pathways. Analysis of the immune microenvironment revealed a positive correlation between gene expression and immune scores, with increased presence of macrophages, T cells, and B cells in the high expression group. Single-cell analysis and experimental results confirmed the enrichment of FUCA1 and NCKAP1L in macrophages. CONCLUSION: The identification of FUCA1 and NCKAP1L as potential prognostic biomarkers suggests their potential for improving patient outcomes. Modulation of macrophages may offer a promising strategy for enhancing the immune microenvironment in osteosarcoma.

Psocodean species are emerging as significant sanitary and stored-product pests, posing threats to human health and global food security. Out of an estimated 10 000 species, the whole genome sequences of only 4 species have been published. Genomic resources are crucial for establishing effective pest control and enhancing our understanding of the evolution of psocodean species. In this study, we employed Illumina and PacBio sequencing along with Hi-C scaffolding techniques to generate a chromosome-level genome assembly for the parthenogenetic booklouse Liposcelis bostrychophila. The assembled genome of this booklouse measures 291.67 Mb in length and comprises 9 chromosomes. Notably, the genome of L. bostrychophila exhibits a high level of heterozygosity and features a distinctive nonhomologous chromosome. This heterozygous characteristic of the parthenogenetic booklouse genome may arise from high mutation rates, based on genomic variations analysis across multiple generations. Our analysis revealed significantly expanded gene families, primarily associated with the detoxification and feeding habits of L. bostrychophila. These include integument esterases (ESTs), ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter genes and gustatory receptors (GRs). The high-quality genome sequence of L. bostrychophila provides valuable resources for further study on the molecular mechanisms of stress resistance. It enables researchers to identify crucial functional genes and facilitates research on the population genetics, evolution and phylogeny of booklice.

This study aimed to evaluate how the duration of travel affects the behavior of urban and rural residents regarding free COVID-19 vaccination, and provide scientific evidence for promoting free vaccination and building an immune barrier to cope with future epidemics. From August 3, 2022 to February,18,2023, A follow-up survey was conducted in urban and rural adults in four cities in China to collect information on socio-demographic factors, vaccination status and travel time for vaccination. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was deployed to measure the net difference of the enhanced vaccination rate between urban and rural residents in different traffic time distribution. A total of 5780 samples were included in the study. The vaccination rate of the booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine among rural residents was higher than that of urban residents with a significant P-value (69.36% VS 64.49%,p < .001). The traffic time had a significant negative impact on the COVID-19 booster vaccination behavior of urban and rural residents. There was a significant interaction between the travel time to the vaccination point and the level of trust in doctors. Travel time had a negative impact on the free vaccination behavior of both urban and rural residents. The government should optimize and expand the number of vaccination sites and enhance residents' trust in the medical system. This is crucial for promoting free vaccination and effective epidemic management in the future.

Objective: The goal of the research is to investigate the link between serum potassium levels and death after 28 days in sepsis patients, utilizing an extensive sample of patients from the multi-center Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database. Current research on serum potassium levels and 28-day mortality in sepsis patients is questionable. This study adds to the growing body of evidence linking serum potassium levels to the 28-day possibility of death in patients with sepsis. Methods: We collected 349,08 patients with sepsis from the retrospective cohort MIMIC-IV database, using serum potassium level on the first day of admission to the intensive care unit as the exposure variable and mortality at 28 days as the outcome variable. And controlled for confounding characteristics including gender, age, ethnicity, and vital signs during admission. Results: Serum potassium has a U-shaped connection with 28-day mortality in patients suffering from sepsis. The turning point was 4.10 mmol/L (95 % confidence interval: 4.03 to 4.22). Serum potassium and 28-day mortality were negatively linked on the inflection point's left side (OR: 0.72; 95 % CI: 0.63 to 0.83, P < 0.0001); on the opposing side of the point of inflexion, serum potassium was enthusiastically attached to 28-day mortality. (OR: 1.13; 95 % CI: 1.06 to 1.21, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: The research conducted found that too high or too low potassium levels were linked to a 28-day risk of mortality in humans with sepsis.

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability among stroke survivors. Despite the availability of numerous stroke rehabilitative therapies, such as mirror therapy, bilateral arm training, and robot-assisted therapy, the recovery of motor function after stroke remains incomplete. Bilateral arm function is a key component in stroke patients to perform activities of daily living and to reflect their functional autonomy. Objective: This clinimetric study investigated and compared the construct validity and responsiveness of 2 bimanual activity outcome measures, the Chedoke Arm and Hand Activity Inventory (CAHAI) and the ABILHAND Questionnaire, in individuals receiving stroke rehabilitation. Methods: The present study is a secondary analysis following the framework of the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN). Individuals with chronic stroke (N = 113) were recruited from outpatient rehabilitation settings. Participants received 18 to 20 sessions of robot-assisted therapy, mirror therapy, combined therapy, or conventional rehabilitation for 4 to 6 weeks. The CAHAI, ABILHAND Questionnaire, and a comparison instrument, the Motor Activity Log (MAL), were administered twice at a 4- to 6-week interval to all participants. ABILHAND scores, in logits, were converted from raw ordinal scores into a linear measure. Results: There was medium to large correlation of the CAHAI and the MAL (ρ = 0.60-0.62, p < 0.01) as well as the ABILHAND Questionnaire and the MAL (ρ = 0.44-0.51, p < 0.01). Change scores from the initial measurement to the post-intervention measurement demonstrated small to medium correlation of the CAHAI and the MAL (ρ = 0.27-0.31, p < 0.01) and medium to large correlation of the ABILHAND Questionnaire and the MAL (ρ = 0.37-0.41, p < 0.01). Overall, 7 of 8 hypotheses were supported. The hypothesis testing regarding the construct validity and responsiveness of the CAHAI and ABILHAND Questionnaire was confirmed. Conclusion: The CAHAI and ABILHAND Questionnaire are both responsive and suitable to detect changes in bilateral arm functional daily activities in individuals with chronic stroke. Patient-reported outcome measures are recommended to use along with therapist-rated outcome measures for upper limb capacity evaluation in stroke rehabilitation. Further study with a prospective study design to capture specific clinical features of participants and the use of body-worn sensors, such as the arm accelerometer, is suggested.

Tears in the lateral meniscus, especially the body and posterior horn, are a common sports medicine injury, and severe cases require arthroscopic treatment. However, the narrow space in the posterolateral compartment of the knee joint makes the surgeon's operation inconvenient. Here we have proposed a suture technique suitable for lateral meniscus posterior horn/body injuries known as the Chinese Union Suture Procedure. The introduction of the posteromedial-transseptal portal allows for a suitable angle of operation for suture hooks in case of injuries to the posterior horn of the lateral meniscus or the popliteal hiatus area of the lateral meniscus. The use of the continuous sewing machine-like suture technique allows surgeons to more quickly and flexibly address meniscus tears. We have also introduced a retractor as an auxiliary tool for portal establishment. In conclusion, our improved technique enables vertical mattress suturing for meniscus tears, and it allows for tying knots on the tibial surface of the meniscus, which is challenging to achieve with traditional all-inside suture hook techniques. Our technique combines flexibility, speed, and cost-effectiveness, making it valuable for clinical applications.

ABSTRACT

Tuft cells are a group of rare epithelial cells that can detect pathogenic microbes and parasites. Many of these cells express signaling proteins initially found in taste buds. It is, however, not well understood how these taste signaling proteins contribute to the response to the invading pathogens or to the recovery of injured tissues. In this study, we conditionally nullified the signaling G protein subunit Gγ13 and found that the number of ectopic tuft cells in the injured lung was reduced following the infection of the influenza virus H1N1. Furthermore, the infected mutant mice exhibited significantly larger areas of lung injury, increased macrophage infiltration, severer pulmonary epithelial leakage, augmented pyroptosis and cell death, greater bodyweight loss, slower recovery, worsened fibrosis and increased fatality. Our data demonstrate that the Gγ13-mediated signal transduction pathway is critical to tuft cells-mediated inflammation resolution and functional repair of the damaged lungs.To our best knowledge, it is the first report indicating subtype-specific contributions of tuft cells to the resolution and recovery.

ABSTRACT

Hair cells (HCs) are the sensory receptors of the auditory and vestibular systems in the inner ears of vertebrates that selectively transduce mechanical stimuli into electrical activity. Although all HCs have the hallmark stereocilia bundle for mechanotransduction, HCs in non-mammals and mammals differ in their molecular specialization in the apical, basolateral and synaptic membranes. HCs of non-mammals, such as zebrafish (zHCs), are electrically tuned to specific frequencies and possess an active process in the stereocilia bundle to amplify sound signals. Mammalian cochlear HCs, in contrast, are not electrically tuned and achieve amplification by somatic motility of outer HCs (OHCs). To understand the genetic mechanisms underlying differences among adult zebrafish and mammalian cochlear HCs, we compared their RNA-seq-characterized transcriptomes, focusing on protein-coding orthologous genes related to HC specialization. There was considerable shared expression of gene orthologs among the HCs, including those genes associated with mechanotransduction, ion transport/channels, and synaptic signaling. For example, both zebrafish and mouse HCs express Tmc1, Lhfpl5, Tmie, Cib2, Cacna1d, Cacnb2, Otof, Pclo and Slc17a8. However, there were some notable differences in expression among zHCs, OHCs, and inner HCs (IHCs), which likely underlie the distinctive physiological properties of each cell type. Tmc2 and Cib3 were not detected in adult mouse HCs but tmc2a and b and cib3 were highly expressed in zHCs. Mouse HCs express Kcna10, Kcnj13, Kcnj16, and Kcnq4, which were not detected in zHCs. Chrna9 and Chrna10 were expressed in mouse HCs. In contrast, chrna10 was not detected in zHCs. OHCs highly express Slc26a5 which encodes the motor protein prestin that contributes to OHC electromotility. However, zHCs have only weak expression of slc26a5, and subsequently showed no voltage dependent electromotility when measured. Notably, the zHCs expressed more paralogous genes including those associated with HC-specific functions and transcriptional activity, though it is unknown whether they have functions similar to their mammalian counterparts. There was overlap in the expressed genes associated with a known hearing phenotype. Our analyses unveil substantial differences in gene expression patterns that may explain phenotypic specialization of zebrafish and mouse HCs. This dataset also includes several protein-coding genes to further the functional characterization of HCs and study of HC evolution from non-mammals to mammals.
