ABSTRACT

Aerosol pollutants significantly cause health concerns. Herein, we established an original real-time aerosol exposure system that used a self-designed bionic-lung microfluidic chip. The chip features a 4 × 4 intersecting array within gas and liquid layers, creating 16 distinct microenvironments. A membrane situated between the layers offers attachment for cells and establishes a gas-liquid interface. This design provides a reliable screening capacity for investigating the biological effects of aerosol exposure in vitro by manipulating the gas and/or liquid conditions. Using this system, we validated that cigarette smoke (CS) aerosol triggered a concentration- and time-dependent reduction in cell viability and intracellular glutathione levels, accompanied by an increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species and Fe2+. Furthermore, CS aerosol significantly downregulated the expression of GPX4, SLC7A11, and FTL mRNA while inducing a notable increase in that of ACSL4 mRNA. Additionally, CS aerosol markedly stimulated the release of proinflammatory cytokines. Crucially, the ferroptosis inhibitor deferoxamine mesylate reversed these biological indicators. These results demonstrate that our novel bionic-lung chip presents a suitably achievable approach to investigate the biological effects induced by aerosol exposure.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study utilizes Hydrogen proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to investigate metabolite concentrations in the bilateral hippocampus of general paresis (GP) patients. Methods: A total of 80 GP patients and 57 normal controls (NCs) were enrolled. Metabolite ratios in the bilateral hippocampus were measured using 1H-MRS. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Based on MMSE scores, participants were categorized into normal control, mild cognitive impairment, and moderate-severe dementia groups. Metabolite ratios (N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/creatine (Cr), choline (Cho)/creatine (Cr), N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/choline (Cho), myoinositol (MI)/creatine (Cr), choline (Cho)/N-acetylaspartate (NAA)) were compared between groups, and correlations between metabolite ratios and cognitive performance were examined. Results: MMSE scores progressively decreased in the normal, mild cognitive impairment, and moderate-severe dementia groups (p < 0.001). The moderate-severe dementia group showed significantly lower NAA/Cr ratios in the left hippocampus region (L-NAA/Cr ratios) (p < 0.001) and higher Cho/NAA ratios in the left hippocampus region (L-Cho/NAA ratios) (p < 0.05) compared to the other groups. However, differences in L-NAA/Cr and L-Cho/NAA ratios between the mild cognitive impairment group and the NC group were not significant in the hippocampus region (p > 0.05). NAA/Cho and NAA/Cr ratios in the right hippocampus region (R-NAA/Cho and R-NAA/Cr ratios) in the moderate-severe dementia group were lower than those in the control group (p < 0.05). No correlation was found between metabolite ratios and MMSE scores in bilateral hippocampus regions. Conclusion: There are distinctive metabolic characteristics in the hippocampus of GP patients. GP patients exhibited lower NAA/Cr and NAA/Cho ratios in the bilateral hippocampus, indicating neuron loss in these areas, which may become more pronounced as the disease progresses.

ABSTRACT

Atypical antipsychotics (AAPs) are primary medications for schizophrenia (SZ). However, their use is frequently associated with the development of adverse metabolic effects, and the mechanisms behind these negative effects remain inadequately elucidated. To investigate the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in regulating antipsychotic-induced metabolic abnormalities, between 2017 and 2020, a cross-sectional study was conducted, involving 142 healthy individuals and 388 SZ patients undergoing treatment with either typical antipsychotic (TAP) or AAP medications. Symptoms of SZ patients were evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), and measurements of metabolic indices and plasma MIF levels were performed on all individuals. A significant increase in plasma MIF levels was observed in groups receiving five major AAP monotherapies in comparison to healthy controls (all p < 0.0001). There was no such increase shown in the group receiving TAP treatment (p > 0.05). Elevated plasma MIF levels displayed a notable correlation with insulin resistance (ß = 0.024, p = 0.020), as well as with the levels of triglycerides (ß = 0.019, p = 0.001) and total cholesterol (ß = 0.012, p = 0.038) in the groups receiving AAPs. However, while the TAP group also displayed certain metabolic dysfunction compared to healthy controls, no significant association was evident with plasma MIF levels (all p > 0.05). In conclusion, plasma MIF levels exhibit a distinctive correlation with metabolic abnormalities triggered by AAPs. Hence, there is potential for further development of MIF as a distinctive marker for monitoring adverse metabolic effects induced by AAPs in clinical settings.

ABSTRACT

The safety of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG) as solvents in electronic cigarette liquid has received increasing attention and discussion. However, the conclusions derived from toxicity assessments conducted through animal experiments and traditional in vitro methodologies have consistently been contentious. This study constructed an original real-time aerosol exposure system, centered around a self-designed microfluidic bionic-lung chip, to assess the biological effects following exposure to aerosols from different solvents (PG, PG/VG mixture alone and PG/VG mixture in combination with nicotine) on BEAS-2B cells. The study aimed to investigate the impact of aerosols from different solvents on gene expression profiles, intracellular biomarkers (i.e., reactive oxygen species content, nitric oxide content, and caspase-3/7 activity), and extracellular biomarkers (i.e., IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and malondialdehyde) of BEAS-2B cells on-chip. Transcriptome analyses suggest that ribosomal function could serve as a potential target for the impact of aerosols derived from various solvents on the biological responses of BEAS-2B cells on-chip. And the results showed that aerosols of PG/VG mixtures had significantly less effect on intracellular and extracellular biomarkers in BEAS-2B cells than aerosols of PG, whereas increasing nicotine levels might elevate these effects of aerosol from PG/VG mixture.

ABSTRACT

Hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) has been found to cause hepatotoxicity, lipotoxicity, and cytotoxicity. However, the effects of HFPO-TA exposure on nervous system toxicity are still unclear. Here, six-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were treated with 2, 20, and 200 µg/L HFPO-TA for six weeks. The untargeted transcriptome analysis was employed to identify differentially expressed mRNAs in the tissue of mouse hippocampi. Then, the levels of neurotransmitters were detected by ELISA analysis in hippocampal and colonic tissues. Real-time quantitative PCR and western blotting analysis were performed to detect the expression of genes associated with modulation of serotonin (5-HT) metabolism and blood-brain barrier. HFPO-TA exposure reduced the mRNA and protein expression of several tight junction protein-coded genes, including Occludin, Claudin-1, and ZO-1, in mice hippocampi, indicating that the blood-brain barrier was disrupted. Moreover, HFPO-TA exposure elevated the expression of neuroinflammatory factors, including TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1ß, TGF-α, and TGF-ß. Analysis of hippocampal transcriptomics suggested that HFPO-TA exposure would impair 5-HT generation and metabolic pathways. In keeping with this prediction, our findings confirmed that the levels of several neurotransmitters, including tryptophan (TRP), 5-HT, 5-HTP, and 5-HIAA, were all impaired by HFPO-TA exposure in the serum, colon, and hippocampus, as was the colonic and hippocampal expression of TRP and 5-HT metabolism-related genes such as SERT, MAO-A, and IDO. These results suggest that HFPO-TA nervous system toxicity in mice may be partly modulated by the brain-gut axis and that HFPO-TA exposure may negatively impact human mental health.

ABSTRACT

Clozapine-resistant treatment-refractory schizophrenia (CR-TRS) patients face significant clinical challenges. While links between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and inflammatory cytokines in schizophrenia have been established, the relationship between MetS and cytokine levels in CR-TRS patients remains unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between cytokines levels, clinical symptoms and cognitive impairments in CR-TRS patients, both with and without MetS. The study included 69 CR-TRS patients (31with MetS and 38 without MetS) and 84 healthy controls. The levels of IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α and routine biochemical parameters were measured. Psychopathological symptoms and cognitive function were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), respectively. We found that CR-TRS patients with MetS displayed lower cognitive function scores compared to those without MetS, even when accounting for potential confounders. TNF-α levels were significantly higher in CRTRS patients with MetS compared to those without MetS, demonstrating substantial pathophysiological potential for CR-TRS patients with MetS via receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). In CR-TRS patients without MetS, IL-2 independently contributed to the total score and general psychopathology subscore of PANSS. Additionally, IL-6 exhibited an independent contribution to the positive subscore of PANSS. In terms of cognition function, IL-6 independently contributed to the delayed memory of RBANS in CR-TRS patients without MetS. TNF-α could potentially serve as a predictive marker for distinguishing between CR-TRS patients with/without MetS, while IL-2 and IL-6 could independently contribute to psychopathological symptoms or cognitive function in CRTRS patients without MetS. Our study provided insights into the potential interplay between cytokines, clinical symptoms and cognitive impairments in CR-TRS patients with/without MetS.

ABSTRACT

Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) smoke up to three times more than general people. However, there are conflicting results regarding the relationship between tobacco smoke and clinical symptom severity in SCZ. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of smoking on clinical symptoms after antipsychotic treatment in a 12-week cohort study after controlling for confounding factors. One hundred and forty-five male patients with drug-naïve first-episode (DNFE) SCZ received antipsychotic monotherapy for 12 weeks. Symptom severity was assessed at baseline and at week 12 by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). We found no differences in clinical symptoms among male smokers with SCZ compared with male nonsmokers. However, male smokers showed greater improvement in negative symptoms after 12 weeks of treatment, controlling for age, years of education, onset age, and baseline body mass index (BMI). Our study showed that after 12 weeks of treatment with antipsychotics, male smokers showed greater improvement in negative symptoms than male nonsmokers.

The prevalence of late-life schizophrenia is increasing with high burden. It is well-documented that schizophrenia affects men and women differently in terms of symptoms. Sex hormones, which play a role in the pathology and symptoms of schizophrenia, are greatly affected by aging. To the best of our knowledge, this is a study to examine the sex differences in psychiatric symptoms and their correlation with sex hormones in participants with late-life schizophrenia. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) factors were evaluated. Testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, progesterone, and prolactin were measured. Male participants with late-life schizophrenia had more severe negative symptoms than female participants (z = -2.56, P = 0.010), while female participants had more severe anxiety/depression compared to male participants (z = 2.64, P = 0.008). Testosterone levels in male participants were positively associated with negative symptoms (ß = 0.23, t = 2.27, P = 0.025), while there was no significant association between sex hormones and symptoms in female participants. In conclusion, higher testosterone levels were associated with more severe negative symptoms in male participants with late-life schizophrenia, suggesting that attention should be paid to the sex differences in late-life schizophrenia in clinical practice.

Microfluidic-based assessment platforms have recently attracted considerable attention and have been widely used for evaluating in vitro toxic effects. In the present study, we developed an original real-time aerosol exposure system, which focused on a self-designed microfluidic chip, in order to evaluate the toxicological effects following exposure to inhalable aerosols. The three-layer structured microfluidic chip enables real-time aerosol exposure at the gas-liquid interface. The comprehensive detection of toxic effect biomarkers based on this assessment platform encompasses transcriptomics, in situ fluorescence detection, and the identification of extracellular secretagogues. Correspondingly, the effects of selected inhalable aerosols such as cigarette smoke (CS), heated tobacco product smoke (HS), and electronic cigarette smoke (ES) on gene expression profiles, cell viability, intracellular biomarkers (reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide), apoptosis (caspase-3/7 activity), and extracellular biomarkers (IL-8, IL-1ß, TNF-α, and malondialdehyde) in the BEAS-2B cells present on the chip were investigated. Following exposure to aerosols derived from CS, HS, and ES, the transcriptome analysis revealed differential expression in these cells. In addition, the overlapping DEGs from the different treatment groups were found to be primarily associated with stimuli and inflammatory responses. Correspondingly, each of the three categories of selected inhalable aerosols was confirmed to induce significant changes in biomarkers that were associated with toxic effects. These results suggest that the original real-time aerosol exposure system centered around a self-designed chip can be applied to the toxic effect evaluation of inhalable aerosol exposure.

ABSTRACT

A twice-walk strategy based on a three-dimensional (3D) cleat-equipped DNA walking machine with a high signal amplification efficiency was investigated for ultrasensitive detection of miRNA. Impressively, addition of duplex-specific nuclease (DSN) just once drove the twice-walk strategy, making the strategy simpler. With the advantages of being simple, rapid and ultrasensitive, the biosensor offers potential for use in early clinical diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Background: Workplace violence (WPV) had become an important issue that endangered the occupational safety of psychiatric nurses. A growing number of studies showed positive post-traumatic growth (PTG) resulting from coping with trauma. Objective: To investigate the characteristics of PTG in psychiatric nurses who experienced violence in the workplace and analyze its influencing factors. Methods: A total of 1202 psychiatric nurses participated in the study. From October 2022 to December 2022, this cross-sectional study collected data on psychiatric nurses from five tertiary hospitals in Guangdong Province, China. Twenty-item Chinese version post-traumatic growth inventory (PTGI), Jefferson Scale of Empathy Health Professional (JSE-HP), Confidence in Coping with Patient Aggression Instrument (CCPAI), Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C), and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) measured PTG level, empathy, the confidence in coping with WPV, post-traumatic stress disorder, and resilience, respectively. Bivariate analysis and multiple linear regression explored potential influencing factors of PTG. This study complies with the EQUATOR (STROBE) checklist. Results: The sample was composed of a total of 1202 psychiatric nurses suffering from WPV. The average score of PTGI in psychiatric nurses was above average (65.75 points; SD = 20.20). Linear regression analyses showed from single-child family (ß=0.052,95% CI=0.342,5.409, P<0.05), education background (ß=0.108,95% CI=1.833,5.097, P<0.001), the confidence in coping with patient aggression (ß=0.106,95% CI=1.385,4.317, P<0.001), empathy (ß=0.057,95% CI=0.312,4.374, P<0.05), and resilience (ß=0.484,95% CI=7.737,9.575, P<0.001) were associated with PTG level. Conclusion: Psychiatric nurses who were non-single child, had received higher education, had confidence in coping with patient aggression, had good resilience and strong empathy were prone to PTG after experiencing WPV. The study findings could help hospitals and nursing managers identify vulnerable individuals and take early intervention measures against such populations.

BACKGROUND: In vitro toxicity assessment studies with various experimental models and exposure modalities frequently generate diverse outcomes. In the prevalent experimental, aerosol pollutants are dissolved in culture medium through capture for exposure to two-dimensional planar cellular models in multiwell plates via immersion. However, this approach can generate restricted and inconclusive experimental data, significantly constraining the applicability of risk assessment outcomes. Herein, the in vitro cocultivation of lung epithelial and/or vascular endothelial cells was performed using self-designed bionic-lung microfluidic chip housing a gas-concentration gradient generator (GCGG) unit. Exposure experiments involving a concentration gradient of cigarette smoke (CS) aerosol were then conducted through an original assembled real-time aerosol exposure system. RESULTS: Transcriptomic analysis revealed a potential involvement of the cGMP-signaling pathway following online CS aerosol exposure on different cell culture models. Furthermore, distinct responses to different concentrations of CS aerosol exposure on different culture models were highlighted by detecting inflammation- and oxidative stress-related biomarkers (i.e., cell viability, reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, GM-CSF, malondialdehyde, and superoxide dismutase). SIGNIFICANT: The results underscore the importance of improving chip biomimicry while addressing multi-throughput demands, given the substantial influence of the coculture model on cellular responses triggered by CS. Furthermore, the coculture model exhibited a mutually beneficial protective effect on cells at low CS concentrations within the GCGG unit, yet revealed a mutually amplified damaging effect at higher CS concentrations in contrast to the monoculture model.

AIM: This study investigated the impact of an 8-month daily-guided intensive meditation-based intervention (iMI) on persistent hallucinations/delusions and health-related quality of life (QoL) in male inpatients with schizophrenia with treatment-refractory hallucinations and delusions (TRHDs). METHODS: A randomized controlled trial assigned 64 male inpatients with schizophrenia and TRHD equally to an 8-month iMI plus general rehabilitation program (GRP) or GRP alone. Assessments were conducted at baseline and the third and eighth months using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), 36-Item Short Form-36 (SF-36), and Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ). Primary outcomes measured PANSS reduction rates for total score, positive symptoms, and hallucinations/delusions items. Secondary outcomes assessed PANSS, SF-36, and FFMQ scores for psychotic symptoms, health-related QoL, and mindfulness skills, respectively. RESULTS: In the primary outcome, iMI significantly improved the reduction rates of PANSS total score, positive symptoms, and hallucination/delusion items compared with GRP at both the third and eighth months. Treatment response rates (≥25% reduction) for these measures significantly increased in the iMI group at the eighth month. Concerning secondary outcomes, iMI significantly reduced PANSS total score and hallucination/delusion items, while increasing scores in physical activity and mindfulness skills at both the third and eighth months compared with GRP. These effects were more pronounced with an 8-month intervention compared with a 3-month intervention. CONCLUSIONS: An iMI benefits patients with TRHDs by reducing persistent hallucinations/delusions and enhancing health-related QoL. Longer iMI duration yields superior treatment outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Innate immunity has been shown to be associated with schizophrenia (Sch). This study explored the relationship between symptoms and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (a marker of innate immunity) in patients with Sch. Ninety-seven first-episode medication-naïve (FEMN) patients with Sch and 65 healthy controls were recruited in this study. We measured the complete blood count and assessed the clinical symptoms using the PANSS scales. We found higher NEU counts and NLR in patients with Sch compared with control subjects. Male patients showed a higher NEU count than female patients. In addition, FEMN patients with higher NLR and NEU values showed higher PANSS-p, PANSS-g, and PANSS-total scores (all p < 0.05). Regression analysis revealed that NLR was a predictor for PANSS total scores in patients with Sch. Higher NLR value was observed in patients with Sch and the significant associations between NLR and psychotic symptoms indicate that an imbalance in inflammation and innate immune system may be involved in the pathophysiology of Sch.

BACKGROUND: Typically, in vitro studies on the exposure of complex gaseous substances are performed in multi-well plate experiments by trapping and redissolving them, which could introduce potential bias into the results due to the use of inadequate trapping methods. Therefore, a more effective method is to expose complex gaseous substances in gaseous form online, such as using microfluidic chips in experiments. To address these challenges, we introduce a methodology that integrates a self-designed bionic-lung chip with transcriptome analysis to assess the impact of cigarette smoke (CS) exposure on changes in BEAS-2B cells cultured on-chip. RESULTS: After the microfluidic chip underwent online gas exposure, total RNA was extracted via in situ cell lysis, and RNA-Seq transcriptome analysis was conducted. And the RNA-Seq findings revealed the significant involvement of the MAPK signaling pathway associated with the inflammatory response in the cellular effects induced by CS exposure. Moreover, the validation of inflammatory response-related biomarkers through in situ fluorescence corroborated the outcomes of the transcriptome analysis. Besides, the experiment involving the inhibition of inflammation by DEX on the microfluidic chip provided additional confirmation of the previous experimental findings. SIGNIFICANT: In this study, we present an analytical strategy that combines microfluidic-based CS in situ exposure method with RNA-Seq technology. This strategy offers an experimental scheme for in situ exposure to complex gases, transcriptome analysis, and in situ fluorescence detection. Through the integration of the comprehensiveness of transcriptome analysis with the chip's direct and intuitive in situ fluorescence detection with the stability and reliability of RT-PCR and Western blot experiments, we have successfully addressed the challenges associated with in vitro risk assessment for online exposure to complex gaseous substances.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the status of anxiety, depression, and psychological resilience among individuals with COVID-19, and their interrelationships to provide a scientific basis for developing psychological intervention strategies for these patients. METHODS: A total of 126 patients with COVID-19 who were admitted to Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital were recruited in this study. A comprehensive survey was conducted using a general information questionnaire, the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, the self-rating depression scale, and the Chinese version of the psychological Connor-Davidson resilience scale; a questionnaire-based survey was conducted. RESULTS: Significant differences in anxiety scores were observed among COVID-19 patients with different education levels and the number of immediate family members. The differences in depression scores were noted among patients of different age groups, and marital statuses were also significant. The total psychological resilience score and the scores of all dimensions are negatively correlated with anxiety and depression. Furthermore, the patient's gender, the number of immediate family members, and the psychological resilience dimensions are associated with the severity anxiety of patients. Patient age and psychological resilience are associated with the depression level of patients. CONCLUSION: Patients with COVID-19 exhibit elevated levels of both anxiety and depression. Notably, psychological resilience emerges as a protective factor against the development of anxiety and depression.

ABSTRACT

Fall-related injury is the most common cause of functional disability and mortality in the older population. Falls in patients with schizophrenia are one of the major concerns in psychiatric hospitals. This study aimed to examine the impact of standardized operating procedures (SOP) on falls in veterans with schizophrenia. Veterans with schizophrenia were allocated to the control group (n = 345) and to the fall protection standardized operating procedures (FP-SOP) group (n = 342). Patients in the control group were given routine nursing for falls, and patients in the FP-SOP group were intervened with FP-SOP plus routine nursing. All patients were observed for one year. The study methods comply with the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist. We found a fall rate of 1.5% in the FP-SOP group and 4.6% in the control group, with a significant difference in the fall rate between the two groups. In addition, the difference in patient satisfaction between the two groups was statistically significant. Our findings suggest that FP-SOP is an effective strategy for fall prevention in psychiatric hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a common mental disorder that seriously affects patients' daily lives and brings heavy psychological and economic burdens to their families and society. The oral problems of patients with schizophrenia are gradually gaining attention, among which dental caries are among the most common oral diseases. Sex differences may be related not only to the various clinical symptoms of schizophrenia but also to different oral hygiene statuses; therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to investigate sex differences related to influencing factors for dental caries in patients with schizophrenia. METHOD: Inpatients with schizophrenia over 18 years old were included in this study, and multidimensional indicators such as demographics, symptom and cognitive impairment assessments, medications, and the caries index of decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) were collected. An analysis of sex-based influential factors for dental caries in schizophrenia patients was performed. RESULTS: Four-hundred and ninety-six patients with schizophrenia were included, with a mean age of 46.73 ± 12.23 years, of which 142 were females and 354 were males. The mean DMFT was significantly higher in males (8.81 ± 8.50) than in females (5.63 ± 6.61, p < 0.001), and the odd ratio of caries in males to females was significantly higher as well (OR = 2.305, p < 0.001). The influential factors of caries in male patients were independently associated with age and smoking status, in which current smokers were at the highest risk for developing caries, and different smoking statuses had various influencing factors for caries. The influencing factors for caries in female patients were independently associated with age, antipsychotic dose, PANSS-positive symptoms, and MMSE levels. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest sex differences exist among influential factors for caries in patients with schizophrenia. These risk factors may even be associated with and affect the treatment and prognosis of psychiatric symptoms in patients. Therefore, oral hygiene management of patients with schizophrenia should be enhanced. These differential factors provide new visions and ideas for formulating individual interventions, treatments, and care priorities.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Sex differences have been observed in many aspects of schizophrenia, including cognitive deficits. Despite extensive research into the relationship between metabolic factors and cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, few studies have explored the potential sex difference in their association. METHODS: We recruited 358 schizophrenia patients and 231 healthy controls. The participants underwent measurements of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose. Metabolic risk factors included abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia. A collection of these metabolic risk factors has been defined as metabolic syndrome. These diagnoses were based on the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III. Cognitive performance was measured using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). A descriptive analysis, difference analysis, and linear regression model were used to identify the metabolic risk factors for cognitive function in schizophrenia. RESULTS: Our findings revealed sex differences in the rate of abdominal obesity and hypertension in schizophrenic patients. Additionally, we observed sex differences in the association between metabolic risk factors and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Specifically, hyperglycemia was associated with the immediate memory index score of RBANS in male patients, while dyslipidemia was associated with language, attention, delayed memory index scores, and RBANS total score in female patients. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that sex should be considered when evaluating the impact of metabolic disorders on the cognitive function of schizophrenic patients. Moreover, our study identifies hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia as potential targets for precise treatment by sex stratification, which could benefit the improvement of cognitive impairment in schizophrenic patients.
