ABSTRACT

Sulfur (S) is an essential element for the growth of rice plants (Oryza sativa L.), crucial for enhancing crop yield and grain quality. However, its potential in mitigating thallium (Tl) toxicity in rice remains unclear. In this study, a hydroponic experiment was performed to investigate the effects of low, medium and high S application levels (LS, MS, HS) on Tl accumulation in rice at three Tl exposure levels (0, 0.5 and 1 mg·L-1). Our findings reveal that the exogenous S application could alleviate Tl toxicity, enhancing fresh weight and shoot length of rice plant. Additionally, HS (HS, SO42- content was 387.84 mg·L-1) group significantly increased chlorophyll and glutathione (GSH) content by 6.46 to 21.38 % and 2.15 to 7.31 % respectively, while reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels by 17.43 to 28.48 %, compared to MS (MS, SO42- content was 193.41 mg·L-1) group. Fe content in rice roots and iron plaque consistently increased with S provision under Tl-free and Tl-contaminated conditions. In Tl exposure environment, HS and LS (LS, SO42- content was 1.02 mg·L-1) groups exhibited significant differences in Fe contents and iron plaque in rice root. Moreover, in Tl exposure environment, S application reduced Tl concentration in iron plaque, root, and shoot, HS treatment showed Tl content reduction from 16.29 % to 25.89 %, compared to LS treatment. Our findings underscore the potential of S application in hydroponic environment to promote rice growth and mitigate Tl accumulation, offering insights for developing effective Tl remediation strategies by using S-contained fertilizers.

ABSTRACT

Aluminum (Al) stress is a significant issue in acidic soils, severely affecting crop growth and yield. Rice is notably resilient to Al toxicity, yet the internal tolerance mechanisms remain inadequately addressed. Here, we examined the role of OsTIP2;1, a tonoplast-bound intrinsic protein (TIP), in rice's internal Al detoxification. Our findings reveal that OsTIP2;1 expression was quickly and explicitly activated by Al ions in roots but not in shoots. The OsTIP2;1-GFP protein localizes to the tonoplast in plant and yeast cells. Non-functional ostip2;1 rice mutants were more vulnerable to Al toxicity. In the roots, the ostip2;1 mutants exhibited considerably lower levels of Al in the cell sap, primarily the vacuolar contents, than in the wild-type plant. Moreover, the ostip2;1 mutants showed reduced Al accumulation in the roots but increased translocation to the shoots. Heterologous expression of tonoplast-localized OsTIP2;1 in yeast led to enhanced Al tolerance, suggesting that OsTIP2;1 facilitates Al sequestration to the vacuole. These findings indicate that OsTIP2;1 mediates internal detoxification by transporting Al into the vacuole in the root and restricting its transport to above-ground tissues, thus contributing to Al resistance in rice.

ABSTRACT

Vocal fatigue(VF) is the common clinical symptom of voice diseases. It can also be a separate symptom and is considered to be a signal for the body to rest and to avoid pathological damage to the vocal cords. Therefore, the early identification and evaluation of vocal fatigue is of great value to the early prevention and treatment of vocal diseases. In recent years, there are many researches on the evaluation methods of vocalization fatigue. We searched the relevant literature and summarized the application status of vocal fatigue assessment methods, in order to provide reference for the selection and development of vocal fatigue assessment tools in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To explore the changes of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets in patients with acute hydrogen chloride gas poisoning. METHODS: When the patients were admitted or on the secondary day, the percentages of total T-cell lymphocyte subsets (CD(3)(+)CD(19)(-)), CD(4)(+)T cells (CD(3)(+)CD(4)(+)), CD(8)(+)T cells (CD(3)(+)CD(8)(+)), B cells (CD(3)(-)CD(19)(+)) and NK cells (CD(3)(-)CD(16)(+)CD(56)(+)), and the ration of CD(4)(+)/CD(8)(+) in 37 cases with acute hydrogen chloride gas poisoning and 49 healthy controls were detected with flow cytometer. RESULTS: The total T-cell percentage and total CD(4)(+)T cell percentage in 37 cases were significantly lower than those in 47 controls (P < 0.05). The percentages of NK cells and B lymphocytes in 37 cases significantly increased, as compared with controls (P < 0.05). The ration of CD(4)(+)/CD(8)(+) in 37 cases significantly decreased, as compared with controls (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The lymphocyte subsets in the patients with acute hydrogen chloride gas poisoning changed, which could influence the immune function of patients.
