ABSTRACT

The current study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the newly developed Mobile Phone Parenting Practices Questionnaire (MPPPQ) in a sample of Chinese migrant parents experiencing long-term parent-child separation. A total of 547 rural-to-urban migrant parents with 3-to-6-year-old children left in rural hometowns were recruited online and completed electronic questionnaires. Exploratory (N1 = 288) and confirmatory (N2 = 259) factor analyses were successively used to identify the factor structure. The results indicated that the MPPPQ consists of six dimensions, responsivity, autonomy granting, proactive control, directive control, psychological control, and harsh punitive control, with a good model fit. The dimensions showed good internal consistency and composite reliability. By examining associations with constructs of the Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire, convergent validity was well established. The criterion validity of the MPPPQ was confirmed by its associations with parental stress, indicated by the Parental Stress Scale. This initial examination of the MPPPQ conveys that it holds good psychometric properties and may contribute to theoretical, methodological, and practical applications regarding parenting in the context of family separation and media use.

ABSTRACT

The construction of heterojunctions has been used to optimize photocatalyst fuel denitrification. In this work, HKUST-1(Cu) was used as a sacrificial template to synthesize a composite material CuxO (CuO/Cu2O) that retains the original MOF framework for photocatalytic fuel denitrification by calcination at different temperatures. By adjusting the temperature, the content of CuO/Cu2O can be changed to control the performance and structure of CuxO-T effectively. The results show that CuxO-300 has the best photocatalytic performance, and its denitrification rate reaches 81% after 4 hours of visible light (≥420 nm) irradiation. Through the experimental analysis of pyridine's infrared and XPS spectra, we found that calcination produces CuxO-T mixed-valence metal oxide, which can create more exposed Lewis acid sites in the HKUST-1(Cu) framework. This leads to improved pyridine adsorption capabilities. The mixed-valence metal oxide forms a type II semiconductor heterojunction, which accelerates carrier separation and promotes photocatalytic activity for pyridine denitrification.

ABSTRACT

Extensive evidence highlights the significant influence of dyadic, emotional teacher-student relationship (TSR) on students' cognitive functioning, socio-emotional development, and overall well-being. However, it remains unclear whether the TSR construct and its manifestations can be generalized across cultures. This qualitative study investigated TSR among 60 primary school teachers in Belgium, China, and Italy (i.e., countries with varying positions on the collectivistic-individualistic continuum of culture). Through semi-structured interviews and metatheme analysis, the study examined the similarities and differences in TSR across these countries, revealing a nuanced and diverse picture in various cultural contexts. The findings align with the existing TSR model by including dimensions of closeness, conflict, and dependency, while also extending the model to identify additional dimensions such as authority, balance, distance, fairness, increasing student motivation, patience, and strictness. Regarding cultural perspective, teachers from these three countries exhibited similar conceptualizations of closeness, conflict, fairness, increasing student motivation, patience, and strictness, whereas the conceptualization of dependency, authority, balance, and distance may be influenced by (collectivistic versus individualistic) culture. Moreover, the manifestations of TSR varied across countries, highlighting the influence of cultural factors such as cultural norms, collectivistic versus individualistic values, and the perceived legitimacy of teacher authority. These findings shed light on the complexities of TSR across countries and emphasize the significance of culturally sensitive approaches in fostering positive TSR in education.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Since Spartina alterniflora (simplified as Spartina) has strong ecological competitiveness and rapid growth, it has been introduced and living in the coastal wetland regions of China for more than 30 years. Taking coastal wetland in the Beibu Gulf of south China as an example, the effects of Spartina invasion on soil quality were investigated to provide scientific basis for soil management. METHODOLOGY: The soil quality of six different coastal wetlands, i.e. mangrove (vegetation coverage is above 95%), mangrove- Spartina ecotones (vegetation coverage is above 95%), sparse mangrove (vegetation coverage is 10%-20%), sparse mangrove- Spartina ecotones (vegetation coverage is about 80%), Spartina (vegetation coverage is about 80%) and bare beach (no plants), were analyzed using the following indicators: pH, cation exchange capacity, contents of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen, microbial carbon / organic carbon, and activities of urease, acid phosphatase, invertase, polyphenol oxidase and catalase. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The results showed that compared to mangrove wetland, most indicators in the mangrove-Spartina wetland showed a decline tendency except pH value, and the contents of total phosphorus and organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon and soil microbial biomass nitrogen, and the activities of acid phosphatase and invertase were significantly reduced (P<0.05). Compared to sparse mangrove wetland and bare beach, the Spartina invasion wetland (sparse mangrove-Spartina wetland and Spartina wetland) had higher contents of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and organic carbon, microbial biomass carbon, microbial biomass nitrogen, cation exchange capacity and the activities of urease and acid phosphatase, so soil quality in the sparse mangrove wetland and bare beach was significantly improved. Factor Analysis and PCA also showed that: the quality of mangrove wetland soil is better than that of mangrove-Spartina ecotones wetland soil; the quality of sparse mangrove-Spartina ecotones wetland soil is better than that of sparse mangrove wetland soil; the quality of Spartina wetland soil is better than that of bare beach wetland soil. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Therefore, in the invaded Beibu Gulf wetland ecosystems of south China, for the mangrove wetlands where the productivity of native plant was higher than that of Spartina, the Spartina invasion can cause soil degradation significantly and it must be strictly controlled, while for sparse mangrove wetland and bare beach where the productivity of native plant was lower than that of Spartina, Spartina invasion can improve the soil quality. Thus our study may help to better understand the effect of plant invasion.
