ABSTRACT

In this paper, we report self-assembled sonogels formed from 1,4-naphthalenedicarbonyldinicotinic acid hydrazide (NDC-NN3) in some liquids including ethanol, tetrahydrofuran (THF), 1,4-dioxane, n-propanol, n-butanol and n-pentanol. When the clear solution of NDC-NN3 in the selected liquids mentioned above at a suitable concentration was irradiated with ultrasound waves at room temperature, a sonogel was formed. Upon heating, the sonogel dissolved gradually and finally became a clear solution again. Upon cooling the hot solution to room temperature, the solution state did not change even after standing for a few days. Nevertheless, if the solution underwent sonication for a certain time, a stable gel was obtained again. The critical gelation concentrations (CGCs) of NDC-NN3 in ethanol, THF, 1,4-dioxane, n-propanol, n-butanol and n-pentanol are 10, 8, 6, 8, 6 and 8 mg mL-1, respectively. The obtained sonogels display excellent mechanical properties. The crystal structure of NDC-NN3 suggests that the naphthalene ring, hydrazide group and the position of N in the pyridine ring mediate the self-assembly process. Upon sonication, the formation of suitable π-π stacking and intermolecular hydrogen bonding drives the gelator molecules to self-assemble into fibers, spheres and micro-burdock-shaped balls in various solvents, which ultimately confine the liquids.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy in selected T4a glottic cancer (thyroid cartilage invasion adherence to the anterior commissure) treated with frontolateral vertical partial laryngectomy (FLVPL) and laryngeal framework reconstruction using titanium mesh. METHODS: Six patients with the limited T4a glottic cancer with thyroid cartilage destruction adherence to the anterior commissure, underwent FLVPL from 2009 to 2016 in Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center. All patients were followed up postoperatively. RESULTS: All patients comprised radical tumor resection and favorable functional outcomes, and no aspiration and laryngeal stenosis were observed. According to postoperative pathology, four patients should go through postsurgical radiotherapy with a mean dose of 66 Gy. But one of them refused to undergo postoperative radiotherapy, who observed local recurrence in postcricoid area underwent total laryngectomy (TL) and ipsilateral selected neck dissection in post-surgery two year. During follow-up period, all patients were still alive, and five patients without local recurrence and distant metastases. CONCLUSION: FLVPL and laryngeal framework reconstruction using titanium mesh is one viable surgical procedure to obtain adequate oncologic and functional outcomes.

ABSTRACT

As one of the most important and fruitful methods, supramolecular self-assembly has a significant advantage in designing and fabricating functional soft materials with various nanostructures. In this research, a low-molecular-weight gelator, N,N'-di(pyridin-4-yl)-pyridine-3,5-dicarboxamide (PDA-N4), was synthesized and used to construct self-assembled gels via a solvent-mediated strategy. It was found that PDA-N4 could form supramolecular gels in mixed solvents of water and DMSO (or DMF) at high water fraction (greater than or equal to 50%). By decreasing the water fraction from 50% to 30%, the gel, suspension and solution phases appeared successively, indicating that self-assembled aggregates could be efficiently modulated via water content in organic solvents. Moreover, the as-prepared PDA-N4 supramolecular gels not only displayed solid-like behavior, and pH- and thermo-reversible characteristics, but also showed a solution-gel-crystal transition with the extension of aging time. Further analyses suggested that both the crystal and gel had similar assembled structures. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding between amide groups and the π-π stacking interactions between pyridine groups played key roles in gel formation. Additionally, the release behavior of vitamin B12 (VB12) from PDA-N4 gel (H2O/DMSO, v/v = 90/10) was evaluated, and the drug controlled release process was consistent with a first-order release mechanism. The human umbilical venous endothelial cell culture results showed that the PDA-N4 xerogel has good cytocompatibility, which implied that the gels have potential biological application in tissue engineering and controlled drug release.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the application and advantages of coblation tonsillectomy with inferior pole capsule preservation in pediatric patients with tonsillar hypertrophy and recurrent tonsillitis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. METHODS: A total of 726 children who were diagnosed with either tonsillar hypertrophy or recurrent tonsillitis were included. Children were divided into two groups according to the surgical technique: conventional coblation tonsillectomy and coblation tonsillectomy with inferior pole capsule preservation. The duration of surgery, intraoperative hemorrhage volume, and postoperative pain, as well as postoperative hemorrhage data in the format of time, location, and degree were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Of the 726 children included, conventional coblation tonsillectomy was performed in 320 children, coblation tonsillectomy with inferior pole capsule preservation was performed in 406 children. There were no significant differences in duration of surgery or intraoperative hemorrhage volume between the two groups. Children who underwent coblation tonsillectomy with inferior pole capsule preservation showed a remarkable improvement in postoperative pain on days 3 and 5 postoperatively. Additionally, the coblation tonsillectomy with inferior pole capsule preservation group exhibited a significantly lower total postoperative hemorrhage rate, secondary hemorrhage rate, and hemorrhage rate in the inferior pole compared with that in the conventional coblation tonsillectomy group. During the 1-year follow-up period, no cases of tonsillar re-hypertrophy or recurrent tonsillitis were observed in either group. CONCLUSION: For pediatric tonsillar hypertrophy and recurrent tonsillitis, coblation tonsillectomy with inferior pole capsule preservation is a safe and effective technique, capable of reducing postoperative pain and hemorrhage, especially secondary hemorrhage at the inferior pole. ABSTRACT

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), which occurs frequently worldwide, is characterized by high risk of metastasis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play crucial roles in tumorigenesis and cancer development. In this study, miR-29c-5p was identified using three high throughput microarrays. We measure miR-29c-5p expression in HNSCC tissues and cell lines. To determine the function of miR-29c-5p in HNSCC, we evaluated its effects in vitro on cell proliferation, the cell cycle, apoptosis, and cell migration. We employed a mouse tumor xenograft model to determine the effects of miR-29c-5p on tumors generated by HNSCC cell lines. The miR-29c-5p expression was lower in HNSCC tissues than in normal tissues. Upregulated miR-29c-5p expression in HNSCC cells inhibited migration and arrested cells in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle. Further, upregulated miR-29c-5p expression inhibited the proliferation of HNSCC cells in vivo and in vitro. In addition, transmembrane protein 98 (TMEM98) was identified as a direct target of miR-29c-5p by using a luciferase reporter assay. These findings provide new insights that link the regulation of miR-29c-5p expression to the malignant phenotype of HNSCC and suggest that employing miR-29c-5p may serve as a therapeutic strategy for managing patients with HNSCC.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The increasing occurrence of radiation-induced second primary squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity (RISCCO) after radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has become a noteworthy complication that can influence long-term survival. This study aimed to analyze the associations of clinicopathologic characteristics with prognostic factors among patients who developed RISCCO after radiotherapy for NPC. METHODS: A total of 41,446 NPC patients admitted to Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center (SYSUCC) between August 1989 and January 2019 were reviewed. Among these patients, 88 RISCCO patients who satisfied the inclusion criteria were included in the study. RESULTS: During our study, the incidence of RISCCO after radiotherapy was 0.21% (88/41,446) among NPC patients at SYSUCC. The latency period ranged from 1.0 to 34.0 years (median, 9.0 years), and the latency of RISCCO was notably shorter for patients who received intensity-modulated radiation therapy than that for patients who received conventional radiotherapy using cobalt-60 or 6-MV X-rays (median, 4.0 years vs. 11.0 years, P = 0.013). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates for the entire cohort of 88 patients were 79.0%, 46.6%, and 35.2%, respectively. The 5-year OS rate for the 79 patients who received treatment was 45.7%, and the 5-year OS rate for the 9 patients who refused treatment was 0%. T classification and surgery were identified as independent prognostic factors associated with a high OS rate. CONCLUSIONS: Surgery as the first-choice treatment may improve survival and prognosis. A long-term follow-up is needed for early detection of RISCCO in NPC patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective:The aim of this study is to explore the application and advantages of combined intrathecal and extrathecal hypothermic plasma tonsillectomy in reducing intraoperative and postoperative hemorrhage in OSA children. Method:We retrospectively reviewed 726 cases who were diagnosed as OSA. All patients were divided into two groups according to the surgical method: 320 cases by total tonsillectomy and 406 cases by combined extracapsular and intracapsular tonsillectomy. The intro operative bleeding volume, post operative haemorrhage data as time, location and degree in the two groups were compared. Result:There was no statistical difference in the intro operative bleeding volume in the two groups [(9.3±4.6) mL]vs [(7.6±3.5) mL], t=12.687, P=0.235. Two patients who underwent combined extracapsular and intracapsular tonsillectomy presented with post operative haemorrhage, the total post operative haemorrhage rate was significantly decreased that in the total tonsillectomy group(14 cases)(χ²=10.779, P=0.001). The 2 patients in combined extracapsular and intracapsular tonsillectomy group were secondary haemorrhage, with location in the upper pole and medium, grade A haemorrhage; while in the 14 cases in in the total tonsillectomy group, there were 2 cases presented with primary haemorrhage and 12 cases with secondary haemorrhage; with regard to location of haemorrhage, 1 in the upper pole, 2 in the medium, 11 in the lower pole; 5 cases presented with grade A haemorrhage, 8 with grade B haemorrhage and 1 with grade C haemorrhage. The haemorrhage rate at 7 days after surgery (χ²=5.697, P=0.017), at the lower pole(χ²=11.961, P=0.001) and grade B(χ²=8.097, P=0.004) were all significantly decreases in the combined extracapsular and intracapsular tonsillectomy group. Conclusion:Plasma tonsillectomy combined with intrathecal and extrathecal hypothermic tonsillectomy is a safe and effective method, which has obvious advantages in reducing the postoperative hemorrhage, especially the secondary hemorrhage of Subtonsillar Pole.

ABSTRACT

Supramolecular organogels are soft materials comprised of low-molecular-mass organic gelators (LMOGs) and organic liquids. Owning to their unique supramolecular structures and potential applications, LMOGs have attracted wide attention from chemists and biochemists. A new "superorganogel" system based on dicarboxylic acids and primary alkyl amines (R-NH2) from the formation of organogels is achieved in various organic media including strong and weak polar solvents. The gelation properties of these gelators strongly rely on the molecular structure. Their aggregation morphology in the as-obtained organogels can be controlled by the solvent polarity and the tail chain length of R-NH2. Interestingly, flower-like self-assemblies can be obtained in organic solvents with medium polarity, such as tetrahydrofuran, pyridine and dichloromethane, when the gelators possess a suitable length of carbon chain. Moreover, further analyses of Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy reveal that the intermolecular acid-base interaction and van der Waals interaction are critical driving forces in the process of organogelation. In addition, this kind of organogel system displays excellent mechanical properties and thermo-reversibility, and its forming mechanism is also proposed.

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence of radiation-induced osteosarcoma of the maxilla and mandible (RIOSM) has become a significant problem that can limit long-term survival. The purpose of this study was to analyze the association of clinicopathologic characteristics with treatment outcomes and prognostic factors of patients who developed RIOSM after undergoing radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 53,760 NPC patients admitted to Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center during the period August 1964 to August 2012. Of these patients, 47 who developed RISOM and met inclusion criteria were included in this study. Two of these 47 patients refused treatment and were then excluded. RESULTS: For all patients treated for NPC at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center during the study period, the total incidence of RIOSM after radiotherapy was 0.084% (47/53,760). Two patients (4.4%) had metastases at the diagnosis of RIOSM. Thirty-nine of the 45 (86.7%) patients underwent surgery for RIOSM; most patients (24/39; 61.5%) who underwent resection had gross clear margins, with 15 patients (38.5%) having either a gross or microscopic positive margin. All patients died. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year overall survival (OS) rates for the entire cohort of 45 patients were 53.3%, 35.6% and 13.5%, respectively. The independent prognostic factors associated with high OS rate were tumor size and treatment type. CONCLUSIONS: RISOM after radiotherapy for NPC is aggressive and often eludes early detection and timely intervention. Surgery combined with postoperative chemotherapy might be an effective treatment to improve patient survival.

ABSTRACT

The N-doped porous carbon monoliths prepared by direct carbonization of IRMOF-3, through an in situ activation and self-templating process, were found to exhibit significantly enhanced performance for the selective adsorption of CO2 compared to pristine IRMOF-3. The transformation from the microporous structure to the meso-macroporous structure opens the pathway for CO2 to more easily access the nitrogen anchors.

Currently, the design and construction of an intelligent stimuli-responsive gel system is still a significant challenge. We present here a new gel system from which the formation of heat-set gels, conventional gels and irreversible heat-set gels can be achieved in aromatic solvents. This gel system is based on two-component gelators containing a succinamic acid derivative (SAD) and a primary alkyl amine (R-NH2). With the increase of temperature to 85 °C, a rarely reported reversible heat-set gel (gel formation with the increase of temperature) is afforded. Upon addition of fatty acids into two-component gelators, a conventional gel (gel formation with the decrease of temperature) is formed. When the fatty acid is replaced with dicarboxylic acid, a new heat-set gel is generated, which is irreversible and thermally super-stable. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the formation of a reversible heat-set gel relies on electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophobic interactions. These two-component gelators show a perfect gel system for the formation of diverse gels including heat-set gels, conventional gels and irreversible heat-set gels. The tunable strategy demonstrated in this letter may provide a new way for creation of more functional gels in gel science.

A rare (3,4,5)-connected self-interpenetrated metal-organic framework with an O-atom lined pore surface has been constructed from Zn(II) and H4L (H4L = 5,5'-(1,3,6,8-tetraoxobenzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-2,7(1H,3H,6H,8H)diyl)-diisophthalic acid), which features an unprecedented 1D + 2D → 3D self-interpenetrated array and shows good controlled drug release properties.
