ABSTRACT

Limited knowledge is available about the association between autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and precocious puberty. Our study examined the association between the two medical conditions and effect modification by sex and neuropsychiatric comorbidities in a nationwide population. To compare the risk of precocious puberty between ASD and non-ASD cases, we conducted a Cox regression analysis using ASD as the exposure and time to precocious puberty as the outcome. We adjusted for sex, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), tic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety disorder, intellectual disability, and epilepsy. We performed a moderation analysis to examine the potential moderating effects of sex and comorbidities. Patients with ASD were prone to have precocious puberty, with an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 1.80 (95% CI: 1.61-2.01). For effect modification, sex, specifically females, moderated the association between ASD and precocious puberty, with a relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) of 7.35 (95% CI 4.90-9.80). No significant effect modification was found for any of the comorbidities within the scope of additive effect modification. We found that patients with ASD were prone to precocious puberty, regardless of sex or comorbid neuropsychiatric disorders. Girls with ASD are at a particularly higher risk of developing precocious puberty.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Both schizophrenia and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) are known as immune-related disorders. We systematically reviewed observational studies to explore the relationship between schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and T1D. METHODS: A preliminary search of articles was completed using the following databases: Airiti Library, CINAHL Complete (via EBSCOhost), OVID MEDLINE, Embase, and PubMed. Two researchers independently assessed each study's quality based on Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). A narrative review summarized the potential relationship between the two diseases. RESULTS: Eleven studies were included in the final analysis. Six observational studies investigated the risk of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder in patients with T1D. Two studies showed negative correlations, one showed no correlation, and three showed positive correlations. On the other hand, five studies reported the prevalence of T1D in patients with schizophrenia. Two of them showed positive associations, and three others showed no association. Although the majority of the included studies suggested a positive association between the two medical conditions, these studies were still too heterogeneous to draw consistent results. CONCLUSION: We found conflicting results regarding the bidirectional relationship between schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and T1D. These may stem from differences in study design, sampling methods, or definition of diagnoses, which are essential aspects to consider in future research.

ABSTRACT

Aqueous zinc-based energy storage devices possess superior safety, cost-effectiveness, and high energy density; however, dendritic growth and side reactions on the zinc electrode curtail their widespread applications. In this study, these issues are mitigated by introducing a polyimide (PI) nanofabric interfacial layer onto the zinc substrate. Simulations reveal that the PI nanofabric promotes a pre-desolvation process, effectively desolvating hydrated zinc ions from Zn(H2O)6 2+ to Zn(H2O)4 2+ before approaching the zinc surface. The exposed zinc ion in Zn(H2O)4 2+ provides an accelerated charge transfer process and reduces the activation energy for zinc deposition from 40 to 21 kJ mol-1. The PI nanofabric also acts as a protective barrier, reducing side reactions at the electrode. As a result, the PI-Zn symmetric cell exhibits remarkable cycling stability over 1200 h, maintaining a dendrite-free morphology and minimal byproduct formation. Moreover, the cell exhibits high stability and low voltage hysteresis even under high current densities (20 mA cm-2, 10 mAh cm-2) thanks to the 3D porous structure of PI nanofabric. When integrated into full cells, the PI-Zn||AC hybrid zinc-ion capacitor and PI-Zn||MnVOH@SWCNT zinc-ion battery achieve impressive lifespans of 15000 and 600 cycles with outstanding capacitance retention. This approach paves a novel avenue for high-performance zinc metal electrodes.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the flexoelectric characteristics of 2D TiO2 nanosheets are examined. The theoretical calculations and experimental results reveal an excellent strain-induced flexoelectric potential (flexopotential) by an effective defect engineering strategy, which suppresses the recombination of electron-hole pairs, thus substantially improving the catalytic activity of the TiO2 nanosheets in the degradation of Rhodamine B dye and the hydrogen evolution reaction in a dark environment. The results indicate that strain-induced bandgap reduction enhances the catalytic activity of the TiO2 nanosheets. In addition, the TiO2 nanosheets degraded Rhodamine B, with kobs being ≈1.5 × 10-2 min-1 in dark, while TiO2 nanoparticles show only an adsorption effect. 2D TiO2 nanosheets achieve a hydrogen production rate of 137.9 µmol g-1 h-1 under a dark environment, 197% higher than those of TiO2 nanoparticles (70.1 µmol g-1 h-1 ). The flexopotential of the TiO2 nanosheets is enhanced by increasing the bending moment, with excellent flexopotential along the y-axis. Density functional theory is used to identify the stress-induced bandgap reduction and oxygen vacancy formation, which results in the self-dissociation of H2 O on the surface of the TiO in the dark. The present findings provide novel insights into the role of TiO2 flexocatalysis in electrochemical reactions.

ABSTRACT

This article proposes an advanced classification algorithm for bronze drinking utensils, taking into account the complexity of their cultural characteristics and the challenges of dynasty classification. The SSA-CBAM-GNNs algorithm integrates the Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA), Spatial and Spectral Attention (CBAM) modules, and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). The CBAM module is essential for optimizing feature extraction weights in graph neural networks, while SSA enhances the weighted network and expedites the convergence process. Experimental results, validated through various performance evaluation indicators, illustrate the outstanding performance of the improved SSA-CBAM-GNNs algorithm in accurately identifying and classifying cultural features of bronze drinking utensils. Comparative experiments confirm the algorithm's superiority over other methods. Overall, this study proposes a highly efficient identification and classification algorithm, and its effectiveness and excellence in extracting and identifying cultural features of bronze drinking utensils are experimentally demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The main objective of this research is to explore the core cognitive mechanisms utilized by exceptionally skilled percussionists as they navigate complex rhythms. Our specific focus is on understanding the dynamic interactions among brain regions, respectively, related to externally directed cognition (EDC), internally directed cognition (IDC), and rhythm processing, defined as the neural correlates of rhythm processing (NCRP). Methods: The research involved 26 participants each in the percussionist group (PG) and control group (CG), who underwent task-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) sessions focusing on rhythm encoding and synchronization. Comparative analyses were performed between the two groups under each of these conditions. Results: Rhythmic encoding showed decreased activity in EDC areas, specifically in the right calcarine cortex, left middle occipital gyrus, right fusiform gyrus, and left inferior parietal lobule, along with reduced NCRP activity in the left dorsal premotor, right sensorimotor cortex, and left superior parietal lobule. During rhythmic synchronization, there was increased activity in IDC areas, particularly in the default mode network, and in NCRP areas including the left inferior frontal gyrus and bilateral putamen. Conversely, EDC areas like the right dorsolateral prefrontal gyrus, right superior temporal gyrus, right middle occipital gyrus, and bilateral inferior parietal lobule showed decreased activity, as did NCRP areas including the bilateral dorsal premotor cortex, bilateral ventral insula, bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, and left superior parietal lobule. Discussion: PG's rhythm encoding is characterized by reduced cognitive effort compared to CG, as evidenced by decreased activity in brain regions associated with EDC and the NCRP. Rhythmic synchronization reveals up-regulated IDC, down-regulated EDC involvement, and dynamic interplay among regions with the NCRP, suggesting that PG engages in both automatic and spontaneous processing simultaneously. These findings provide valuable insights into expert performance and present opportunities for improving music education.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is the most common malignant tumour of the digestive system, yet there is a lack of reported prognostic biomarkers for STAD patients. METHODS: Transcriptomic expression data of STAD from GEO database, single cell sequencing data from OMIX gastric cancer database. Conservative molecular typing of gastric cancer was constructed using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). The abundance of 28 immune cells in the tumour samples was assessed using ssGSEA. The R package "oncoPredict" was used to predict chemotherapy response. TIDE website for immunotherapy response prediction. Finally, single cell analysis was performed to clarify the specific type annotation of STAD cells and to analysis their spatial expression. RESULTS: Hypoxia-score demonstrated excellent prognostic discrimination in TCGA gastric cancer samples. Among multiple deconvolution-based algorithms for immune infiltration, Hypoxia-score presented a general immunosuppressive efficacy across multiple datasets, as evidenced by a broad negative correlation with immune cell infiltration. By the likelihood that each group may have specific drug sensitivity to multiple chemotherapeutic and targeted agents. Results showed that high-risk scoring patients were more sensitive to Staurosporine, Sabutoclax, and AZD8055, while low-risk patients were more sensitive to Bortezomib, Dactinomycin, Docetaxel, Daporinad, Sepantronium, and bromide. In the immunotherapy cohort, the Hypoxia-score presented the ability to discriminate for immunotherapy efficacy. The distribution of Hypoxia-score in single-cell descending space was calculated using AddModuleScore and was found to be distributed across the various cell types annotated in the single-cell analysis. It is suggested that various cells in the tumour microenvironment are involved in hypoxia gene set processes to varying degrees. CONCLUSION: The Hypoxia-score proves to be a valuable tool for assessing the prognosis of gastric cancer patients and guiding drug treatments, providing significant guidance for clinical diagnosis and treatment in the context of gastric cancer.

ABSTRACT

We have demonstrated the molecular-weight effects of adding homopolystyrene (hPS) on the evolution of perforated layers and double gyroids in polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate)-based films during isothermal annealing. Two homopolystyrenes of 2.8 and 17 kg mol-1 were used. To prepare blend films, PS-b-PMMA and hPSx (x: 2.8 or 17) were mixed at a weight-fraction ratio of 75/25 in toluene and then spin-coated at SiOx/Si. Spin coating inevitably produced films with thick edges at the periphery of the substrate. The structural evolution of the spun films was in situ characterized by grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). The annealed films were then characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). We found that thin middle regions behaved differently from thick beads for the films. The middle of the blend films mainly formed perforated layers with different spatial orders and orientations, depending on the molecular weight of added hPS chains. Hexagonally perforated layers quickly formed at 205 °C for PS-b-PMMA/hPS2.8 films. However, when hPS17 was used instead of hPS2.8, perforated layers formed with defects in PS-b-PMMA/hPS17 films annealed at 205 °C. Annealing at 240 °C improved the spatial order and orientation of perforated layers for a PS-b-PMMA/hPS17 film. Nevertheless, annealing at 240 °C inversely depressed the in-plane spatial order of perforated layers for a PS-b-PMMA/hPS2.8 film. The depression in the in-plane spatial order is ascribed to a dilution effect of added short chains. Compared to the middle regions, the thick beads went through several metastable phases, such as perpendicularly oriented perforated layers and double gyroids.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Our study aimed to determine whether mothers with bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, or schizoaffective disorder affected the risk of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in their offspring. Methods: We conducted a nationwide cohort study by using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database and the Maternal and Child Health Database from 2004 to 2018. A total of 2,556,640 mother-child pairs were identified. Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the risk of T1D between children born to mothers with mood disorders and schizophrenia and those without. Results: No significant difference in risk of T1D was observed between the offspring of mothers with major psychiatric disorders and those without (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 0.86 with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 0.58-1.24). In subgroup analysis, we found an aHR of 1.81 with a 95% CI of 0.83-3.82 in the maternal bipolar disorder on the risk of T1D in offspring and an aHR of 0.87 (95% CI: 0.59-1.25) in maternal major depressive disorder. In the schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder group, aHR cannot be obtained due to lesser than three events in the analysis. Conclusion: The risk of T1D in offspring of mothers with mood disorders and schizophrenia was not significant. However, children born to mothers with bipolar disorder may have a tendency to develop T1D. The relationship between maternal psychiatric disorders and the risk of T1D in offspring warrants further investigation in studies with longer follow-up periods.

ABSTRACT

Dementia is a major cause of disability and dependency. Pharmacological interventions are commonly provided to patients with dementia to delay the deterioration of cognitive functions but cannot alter the course of disease. Nonpharmacological interventions are now attracting increasing scholarly interest. In accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement, we aim to assess the effectiveness of music-based therapies on the cognition, quality of life (QoL), and neuropsychiatric symptoms of patients with dementia through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases were searched for reports of RCTs examining the effectiveness of music-based therapies for dementia published as of April 2023. A total of 674 articles were screened, and 22 trials from 21 studies (1780 patients) met the eligibility criteria. In 15 trials, music-based therapies significantly improved the cognition of patients with dementia compared with non-music therapies. In 11 trials, music-based therapies also significantly improved the QoL of patients with dementia compared with non-music therapies. In six trials, music-based therapies significantly improved patients' neuropsychiatric symptoms compared with non-music therapies. In conclusion, music-based therapy is recognized as a safe and effective alternative approach for patients with dementia.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Albuminuria has been suggested as an atherosclerotic risk factor among the general population. However, whether this association will be amplified in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) is unknown. It is also unknown whether diabetes mellitus confounds the association. We aim to analyse the prognosis of elevated urine albumin creatinine ratio (uACR) in the CAD population with or without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: This multi-center registry cohort study included 5,960 patients with CAD. Patients were divided into T2DM and non-T2DM group, and baseline uACR levels were assessed on three grades (low: uACR < 10 mg/g, middle: 10 mg/g ≤ uACR < 30 mg/g, and high: uACR ≥ 30 mg/g). The study endpoints were cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality. RESULTS: During the median follow-up of 2.2 [1.2-3.1] years, 310 (5.2%) patients died, of which 236 (4.0%) patients died of cardiovascular disease. CAD patients with elevated uACR had a higher risk of cardiovascular mortality (middle: HR, 2.32; high: HR, 3.22) than those with low uACR, as well as all-cause mortality. Elevated uACR increased nearly 1.5-fold risk of cardiovascular mortality (middle: HR, 2.33; high: HR, 2.34) among patients without T2DM, and increased 1.5- fold to 3- fold risk of cardiovascular mortality in T2DM patients (middle: HR, 2.49; high: HR, 3.98). CONCLUSIONS: Even mildly increased uACR could increase the risk of cardiovascular mortality in patients with CAD, especially when combined with T2DM.

BACKGROUND: Strategies that restore the immune system's ability to recognize malignant cells have yielded clinical benefits but only in some patients. Tumor cells survive cryotherapy and produce a vast amount of antigens to trigger innate and adaptive responses. However, because tumor cells have developed immune escape mechanisms, cryotherapy alone may not be enough to induce a significant immune response. METHODS: The mice were randomly divided into four groups: Group A: low-dose total body irradiation combined with cryotherapy (L-TBI+cryo); Group B: cryotherapy (cryo); Group C: low-dose total body irradiation(L-TBI); Group D: control group (Control). The tumor growth, recurrence, and survival time of mice in each group were compared and the effects of different treatments on systemic anti-tumor immunity were explored. RESULTS: L-TBI in conjunction with cryotherapy can effectively control tumor regrowth, inhibit tumor lung metastasis, extend the survival time of mice, and stimulate a long-term protective anti-tumor immune response to resist the re-challenge of tumor cells. The anti-tumor mechanism of this combination therapy may be related to the stimulation of inflammatory factors IFN-γ and IL-2, as well as an increase in immune effector cells (CD8+ T cells) and a decrease in immunosuppressive cells (MDSC, Treg cells) in the spleen or tumor tissue. CONCLUSIONS: We present unique treatment options for enhancing the immune response caused by cryotherapy, pointing to the way forward for cancer treatment.

Background: Considering the strong attenuation of photons and the potential to increase the deposition of radiation, high-atomic number nanomaterials are often used as radiosensitizers in cancer radiotherapy, of which gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are widely used. Materials and Methods: We prepared albumin-modified GNPs (Alb-GNPs) and observed their radiosensitizing effects and biotoxicity in human non-small-cell lung carcinoma tumor-bearing mice models. Results: The prepared nanoparticles (Alb-GNPs) demonstrated excellent colloidal stability and biocompatibility at the mean size of 205.06 ± 1.03 nm. Furthermore, clone formation experiments revealed that Alb-GNPs exerted excellent radiosensitization, with a sensitization enhancement ratio (SER) of 1.432, which is higher than X-ray alone. Our in vitro and in vivo data suggested that Alb-GNPs enabled favorable accumulation in tumors, and the combination of Alb-GNPs and radiotherapy exhibited a relatively greater radiosensitizing effect and anti-tumor activity. In addition, no toxicity or abnormal irritating response resulted from the application of Alb-GNPs. Conclusion: Alb-GNPs can be used as an effective radiosensitizer to improve the efficacy of radiotherapy with minimal damage to healthy tissues.

ABSTRACT

Immunostimulatory effects of radiotherapy can be synergistically augmented with immune checkpoint blockade to act both on irradiated tumor lesions and distant, non-irradiated tumor sites. Our hypothesis was that low-dose total body irradiation (L-TBI) combined with hypo-fractionated radiotherapy (H-RT) and anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (aPD-1) checkpoint blockade would enhance the systemic immune response. We tested the efficacy of this triple therapy (L-TBI + H-RT + aPD-1) in BALB/c mice with bilateral breast cancer xenografts. The L-TBI dose was 0.1 Gy. The primary tumor was treated with H-RT (8 Gy × 3). The PD-1 monoclonal antibody was injected intraperitoneally, and the secondary tumors not receiving H-RT were monitored for response. The triple therapy significantly delayed both primary and secondary tumor growths, improved survival rates, and reduced the number of lung metastasis lesions. It increased the activated dendritic and CD8+ T cell populations and reduced the infiltration of myeloid-derived suppressor cells in the secondary tumor microenvironment relative to other groups. Thus, L-TBI could be a potential therapeutic modality, and when combined with H-RT and aPD-1, the therapeutic effect could be enhanced significantly.

Purpose: Diabetes mellitus (DM) increases the risk of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. The coexistence of depression and DM is associated with an increased risk of DM complications and functional morbidity. The independent effect of depression on mortality in patients with DM is unclear, and relevant Asian studies have provided inconsistent results. Accordingly, this study assessed the independent and additive effects of DM and depression on mortality in a nationally representative cohort of older adults in Taiwan over a 10-year observation period. Patients and Methods: A total of 5041 participants aged 50 years or older were observed between 1996 and 2007. We defined depression as a score of ≥8 on the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D 10) scale. Additionally, we defined participants as having type 2 DM if they had received a diagnosis of type 2 DM from a health-care provider. Cox proportional hazard models were applied to analyze predictors of mortality in depression and DM comorbidity groups. Results: During the 10-year follow-up period, 1637 deaths were documented. After adjustment for potential confounders, the hazard ratios for mortality in participants with both depression and DM, DM only, and depression only were 2.47 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.02-3.03), 1.95 (95% CI: 1.63-2.32), and 1.23 (95% CI: 1.09-1.39), respectively. Conclusion: The co-occurrence of depression with DM in Asian adults increased overall mortality rates. Our results indicate that the increased mortality hazard in individuals with DM and depression was independent of sex.

Background: Cancer-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) are regarded to have significant function in most steps during cancer progression. This meta-analysis aims to investigate the accuracy of EVs as a biomarker in cancer diagnosis. Methods: The diagnostic efficacy of EVs for different cancers was assessed using pooled sensitivity and specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and overall area under the curve (AUC) of the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC). The positive likelihood ratio (PLR) and negative likelihood ratio (NLR) were verified to estimate the diagnostic efficacy of EV at a clinical level. Results: In all, 6,183 cancer patients and 2,437 healthy controls from 75 eligible studies reported in 42 publications were included in the study. The overall pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, NLR, and DOR were 0.62 (95% CI: 0.60-0.63), 0.76 (95% CI: 0.75-0.78), 3.07 (95% CI: 2.52-3.75), 0.34 (95% CI: 0.28-0.41), and 10.98 (95% CI: 7.53-16.00), respectively. Similarly, the AUC of the SROC was 0.88, indicating a high conservation of EVs as an early diagnostic marker. Furthermore, subgroup analysis suggested that the use of small EVs as a biomarker was more accurate in serum-based samples of nervous system cancer (p < 0.001). As a result, ultracentrifugation and quantification and size determination methods, such as Western blotting and ELISA were the most reliable identification methods for EV detection. We also indicated that increased secretion of EVs made them a capable biomarker for diagnosing cancer in elderly European individuals. Conclusions: Our study provides evidence that EVs are a promising non-invasive biomarker for cancer diagnosis. Well-designed cohort studies should be conducted to warrant the clinical diagnostic value of EVs.

ABSTRACT

K-12 online learning can be advantageous in a variety of circumstances, including inclement weather days and emergency remote teaching. With the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, many K-12 districts may consider ways to incorporate online learning into their regular school plans after they resume face-to-face instruction. However, the most challenges to online learning seemed to take place at the elementary level. This brings up an important question: What should elementary online teaching and learning look like? We examined six award-winning K-6 teachers' perspectives on and experiences with online instruction and practices for elementary students. The teachers suggested that online instruction to support elementary students' learning should be (a) organized, (b) engaging, and (c) interactive. Teachers also suggested that developmentally appropriate use of technology and parental involvement may foster elementary students' online learning experiences.

ABSTRACT

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) accounts for most of the anemia in pregnancy, and iron is essential for neurodevelopment. Tics and Tourette's syndrome (TS) are neurodevelopmental disorders that manifest in childhood. A few studies reported an inconclusive association between iron deficiency and tics in children. No study has investigated the relationship between prenatal maternal anemia and tics in children. We aimed to assess the relationship between prenatal anemia exposure and the incidence of tics or TS in offspring. We linked the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to the Maternal and Child Health Database for the analysis and identified 153,854 children with prenatal anemia exposure and 2,014,619 children without prenatal anemia exposure from 2004 to 2016 and followed them through 2017. Cox regression models were applied to compare the risk of tics or TS between the exposed and nonexposed groups. Among the exposed group, 37,832 were exposed at ≤12 weeks of gestational age (GA) and 116,022 at >12 weeks of GA. We observed an increased risk of tics and TS in those exposed at ≤12 weeks compared with the nonexposed group (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) = 1.23, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12-1.34). The result remained consistent after adjusting for birth year, sex, birth order, maternal age, low-income levels, gestational age, birth weight, and alcohol use and smoking during pregnancy (aHR = 1.16, CI: 1.04-1.28). Fetuses exposed to maternal anemia at ≤12 weeks of GA are at high risk of tics or TS. However, this effect was attenuated to insignificance in the sibling comparison. Our study highlights the importance of detection of anemia during pregnancy and proper timing of iron supplementation.

Salamanders are unique among tetrapods in their ability to regenerate their limbs throughout life. Like other poikilothermic amphibians, salamanders also show a remarkable capacity to survive long periods of starvation. Whether the physiological reserves necessary for tissue regeneration are preserved or sacrificed in starved salamanders is unknown. In the current study, we maintained Iberian ribbed newts ( Pleurodeles waltl) under extreme physiological stress to assess the extent of regeneration and identify the molecular and cellular changes that may occur under such conditions. After 19 months of complete food deprivation, the animals exhibited extensive morphological and physiological adaptations but remained behaviorally active and vigilant. Autophagy was elevated in different tissues and the transformed gut microbiota indicated remodeling of the intestinal tract related to autophagy. Upon limb amputation in animals starved for 21 months, regeneration proceeded with progenitor cell proliferation and migration, leading to limb blastema formation. However, limb outgrowth and patterning were substantially attenuated. Blockage of autophagy inhibited cell proliferation and blastema formation in starved animals, but not in fed animals. Hence, tissue autophagy and the regenerative response were tightly coupled only when animals were under stress. Our results demonstrate that under adverse conditions, salamanders can exploit alternative strategies to secure blastema formation for limb regeneration.

ABSTRACT

We have examined the spatial distributions of polymer chains in blend films of weakly segregated polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) [P(S-b-MMA)] and deuterated polystyrene (dPS). By fine-tuning the composition (ϕPS+dPS = 63.8 vol %) of the total PS/dPS component and annealing temperature (230 and 270 °C), P(S-b-MMA)/dPS blend films mainly form perforated layers with a parallel orientation (hereafter PLs//). The distributions of dPS in PLs// were probed by grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering (GISANS) and time-of-flight neutron reflectivity (ToF-NR). GISANS and ToF-NR results offer evidence that dPS chains preferentially locate at the free surface and within the PS layers for blend films that were annealed at 230 °C. Upon annealing at 270 °C, dPS chains distribute within PS layers and perforated PMMA layers. Nevertheless, dPS chains still retain a surface preference for thin films. In contrast, such surface segregation of dPS chains is prohibited for thick films when annealed at 270 °C.
