ABSTRACT

Abstract Leptophlebiidae is the second most diverse family within Ephemeroptera, with species distributed across various States in Brazil, but with gaps in distribution records in others. Currently, nine species of Leptophlebiidae are recorded for the state of Piauí. Based on this information gap, the objective of this study was to present an updated species list of the family Leptophlebiidae new occurrence records and distributional sites for the state of Piauí, Brazil. By analyzing 447 specimens, we have significantly expanded our knowledge about the distribution of Leptophlebiidae species in the state of Piauí, increasing the recorded species from nine to 17. We have also added new occurrence records for six species and, for the first time, documented the presence of four genera. It is important to highlight that there is still an extensive area within the Cerrado and Brazilian semiarid regions where the occurrence of Ephemeroptera is unknown, confirming that the diversity in this area is underestimated and that knowledge of Ephemeroptera species and their distributions can expand with increased sampling efforts in the coming years, reducing the Linnean and Wallacean shortfall regarding this group. Our results also demonstrate the urgent need for inventories in the southern part of the state of Piauí, particularly in the sub-basins of the middle and upper Parnaíba river, which are considered suitable for monoculture expansion in Brazil.


Resumo Leptophlebiidae é a segunda família mais diversa de Ephemeroptera, com espécies distribuídas em vários estados do Brasil, mas com lacunas no registro de distribuição em outros. Por exemplo, no estado do Piauí tem registrado apenas nove espécies de Leptophlebiidae. Baseada nessa lacuna de informação, o objetivo deste estudo foi apresentar uma lista atualizada de espécies da família Leptophlebiidae, novos registros de ocorrência e sítios de distribuição para o estado do Piauí, Brasil. Ao analisar 447 exemplares, ampliamos significativamente nosso conhecimento sobre a distribuição das espécies de Leptophlebiidae no estado do Piauí, aumentando o número de espécies registradas de nove para 17. Também adicionamos novos registros de ocorrência para seis espécies e, pela primeira vez, documentamos a presença de quatro gêneros. Destacamos que ainda existe uma extensa área do Cerrado e semiárido brasileiro que se desconhece a ocorrência de Ephemeroptera, confirmando que a diversidade nessa área é subestimada e que o conhecimento sobre as espécies de Ephemeroptera e suas distribuições podem se expandir com o aumento do esforço amostral nos próximos anos, diminuindo as lacunas Lineana e Wallaceana sobre esse grupo. Nossos resultados também demonstram a necessidade emergencial de inventários no sul do Estado do Piauí, principalmente nas sub-bacias do médio e alto rio Parnaíba que é considerado adequado para a expansão da monocultura no Brasil.

ABSTRACT

A new genus and two new species of the family Platyarthridae are described from the Brazilian state of Piau, Paratrichorhina piauiensis n. gen. et n. sp. and P. taitii n. gen. et n. sp. Similarities and differences with the other genera of the family are discussed, and a key to the family is provided.

ABSTRACT

Two new species of Simothraulopsis (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) are described and illustrated, based on recent collections and specimens deposited in the Zoological Collection of Universidade Federal de Roraima (UFRR), northern Brazil. Simothraulopsis pacaraima sp. nov. differs from others species by the telopenis being spine-like, short (less than the half of total length of penis lobes) and slightly directed laterally, and the penis lobes with a medial knob between them. Simothraulopsis rainori sp. nov. differs from others species by the telopenis being spine-like, mid-sized (less than the half of total length of penis lobes) and ventrally directed with the apex bent outward, and the penis lobes fused in their basal 1/3, with a well-marked sclerotized region; each lobe is laterally swollen and protruding.

ABSTRACT

Based on collections made from streams of the Itapecuru, Parnaíba and Tocantins River basins, three species of Anacroneuria Klapálek are recorded for the first time from Maranhão State, northeastern Brazil: A. atrifrons Klapálek, A. minuta Klapálek and A. singularis Righi-Cavallaro Lecci. Additionally, A. leccii sp. nov. is described from this material and remarks concerning A. marlieri are also presented.

ABSTRACT

Chasmogenus cajuina sp. nov., a new species of the water scavenger beetle (Hydrophilidae: Acidocerinae) is described and illustrated, based on adult males, collected in the Lower Parnaíba River Basin, north of Piauí, Northeast Region of Brazil. In addition, Helochares (Sindolus) femoratus (Brullé, 1841) and Hydrobiomorpha spatula Bachmann, 1988 are recorded from Piauí State for the first time.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Transorbital and subtemporal keyhole approaches have recently been proposed to approach lesions in the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus (CS) and Meckel's cave (MC). Our goal was to compare these approaches and suggest indications for each of them. METHODS: Five cadaver heads (10 sides, 40 procedures) were used. The lateral transorbital approaches were carried out without and with the removal of the lateral orbital rim, herein referred to as the lateral transorbital approach (LTOA) and the lateral orbital wall approach (LOWA). The subtemporal approaches were performed without and with the removal of the zygomatic arch, referred to as the subtemporal approach (STA) and the subtemporozygomatic approach (STZA). Five targets were chosen and 2 triangles were created representing the lateral wall of the CS and MC. Stereotactic measurements were quantified to calculate angles of attack, surgical freedom, and temporal lobe retraction for each approach. RESULTS: LTOA presented the smaller horizontal angles of attack. LOWA increased the angles to the same level of STA and STZA. STA and STZA presented larger vertical angles of attack. The surgical freedom presented gradual increase from LTOA to LOWA, STA, and STZA. STA and STZA needed greater temporal lobe retraction for most targets. CONCLUSIONS: LTOA is a good option to biopsy a lesion in the lateral wall of the CS and LOWA increased the surgical corridor to work with microsurgical techniques. STA and STZA could be better options when wide exposure is necessary, but temporal lobe retraction should be taken into consideration.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: The distribution of aquatic insects of the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera (EPT) can be influenced by factors such as water quality, habitat integrity and biogeography. The present study evaluated the structure of EPT assemblages in streams in the Cerrado, a global biodiversity hotspot. Samples were collected from 20 streams in two protected areas: Parque Estadual do Mirador (10 streams) and Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas (10 streams). A total of 1987 specimens were collected, representing 46 taxa of EPT. The two study areas did not differ significantly in taxonomic richness of EPT genera (t = -1.119, p = 0.279) and abundance of individuals (t = 0.268, p = 0.791) but did differ in genus composition (Pseudo-F = 2.088, R2 = 0.103, p = 0.015) and environmental variables (Pseudo-F = 2,282, R2 = 0.112, p = 0.014). None of the tested environmental variables were correlated with the community but a spatial filter captured an effect of the spatial distribution of streams. The region of the study is located in MATOPIBA, which is the last agricultural frontier of the Cerrado. Therefore, it is important that there is police and monitoring so that the "Parque Estadual do Mirador" and the "Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas" continue to play their role in conserving biodiversity in the future.


Resumo: A distribuição de insetos aquáticos das ordens Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera e Trichoptera (EPT) pode ser influenciada por fatores como qualidade da água, integridade do habitat e biogeografia. O presente estudo avaliou a estrutura das assembleias do EPT em riachos do Cerrado, um hotspot de biodiversidade global. Foram coletadas amostras em 20 riachos em duas áreas protegidas: Parque Estadual do Mirador (10 riachos) e Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas (10 riachos). Um total de 1987 espécimes foram coletados, representando 46 táxons de EPT. As duas áreas de estudo não diferiram significativamente na riqueza taxonômica dos gêneros EPT (t= -1,119; p= 0,279) e abundância de indivíduos (t= 0,268; p= 0,791), mas diferiram na composição do gênero (Pseudo-F= 2,088, R2= 0,103; p= 0,015) e variáveis ambientais (Pseudo-F= 2,282; R2= 0,112; p= 0,014). Nenhuma das variáveis ambientais testadas foi correlacionada com a comunidade, mas um filtro espacial capturou um efeito da distribuição espacial dos riachos. A região do estudo está localizada em MATOPIBA, que é a última fronteira agrícola do Cerrado. Portanto, é importante que exista fiscalização e monitoramento para que o "Parque Estadual do Mirador" e o "Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas" continuem desempenhando seu papel na conservação da biodiversidade no futuro.

ABSTRACT

Symptomatic cavernous malformations in the ventral region of the pons are difficult to access surgically. The authors present a case of a 46-year-old woman with a 10-year history of sudden and transitory diplopia and right hemiparesis, followed by five more episodes of mild right hemiparesis. Brain MRI showed a 2.6-cm cavernous malformation in the pons with an exophytic portion in the prepontine cistern. The patient underwent an endoscopic endonasal transclival approach for a complete resection of the lesion. CSF leak was noted and corrected on the sixth postoperative day. ABSTRACT

The genus Miroculis Edmunds, 1963 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) is represented by 23 species: two of them aredescribed based solely on nymphs, 10 based solely on male adults, and three based on nymphs and adults  (Domínguez et al., 2006; Gama-Neto Hamada, 2013, 2014; Raimundi et al., 2017). Currently, the genus is represented by six species in Roraima State, Brazil, all are described as adults but only one of them has the nymphal stage described (Gama-Neto Hamada, 2013, 2014; Gama-Neto et al., 2018; Raimundi et al., 2017).

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Define the anatomic distribution of the olfactory filaments within specific mucosal regions of the nasal cavity. STUDY DESIGN: Cadaveric study. METHODS: Seventeen cadaveric specimens (34 sides) were dissected to study the anatomical distribution and density of olfactory fila within different regions of the nasal cavity. Olfactory fila were dissected retrogradely to their point of entry into the anterior cranial fossa through the cribriform plate. Anatomic relationships among various components of the olfactory system and their corresponding arterial supply were determined subjectively. RESULTS: The highest density of olfactory fila was found at the mucosa of the ethmoid roof and superior turbinates. Olfactory fila were found at regions not previously considered to be part of the olfactory system: lateral wall of the nose, ethmoidal bullae, and between the os sphenoidale and arc of the posterior choana. Furthermore, at the septum, 20% of the olfactory fila crossed contralaterally before exiting the nose. The anterior ethmoidal arteries were the primary blood supply to the olfactory epithelium. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that olfactory filaments extend beyond previously established boundaries. These findings may have clinical implications regarding oncologic resections and could serve as the foundation for the development of techniques that better preserve olfactory function. ABSTRACT

A new species of the mayfly genus Thraulodes is described based on specimens from the state of Roraima, Brazil. The male imago of Thraulodes rodrigoi sp. nov. is described and the new species can be easily recognized by: forewing with one weakly marked cross veins basal to bullae; femora of forelegs with an apical transversal band brown heavily marked and one submedian macula; styliger plate triangular with a medial rounded projection; and penes short and wide, without lateral pouch. Thraulodes sternimaculatus Lima, Mariano Pinheiro, 2013 is also reported for the first time in Piauí State.

ABSTRACT

We present taxonomic contributions and new records for Neotropical Brachycercinae based on material from Brazil. We performed a phylogenetic analysis in order to test the relationship between Alloretochus Sun & McCafferty, 2008 and Latineosus Sun & Mc- Cafferty, 2008, and Alloretochus sigillatus was recovered in the Latineosus clade. Therefore, we propose a new combination, Latineosus sigillatus comb. n. The nymph of Latineosus sigillatus is described and is associated with imago through molecular tools. Moreover, Alloretochus peruanicus (Soldán, 1986) is reported for the first time from Brazil.

ABSTRACT

The present work, based on material from northern, central-western, and northeastern Brazil, contributes to the knowledge of the two-winged Cloeodes Traver (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) in South America. Two new species, C. maracatu, sp. nov. and C. spaceki, sp. nov., are described, the former based on nymphs and reared adults and the latter only on nymphs; the male and female imago of C. auwe and the female imago of C. redactus are described. Based on these findings, an updated key for South American nymphs and male adults of the two-winged Cloeodes is provided.
