ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this randomized, double-blind, two-arm crossover in situ study was to investigate whether nano-hydroxyapatite (nanoHAP) dental lotion (Apagard Deep Care) applied immediately after tooth-brushing with nanoHAP toothpaste (Apagard M-plus) enhances the remineralization promotion and the demineralization inhibition efficacies of nanoHAP toothpastes. METHODS: 64 sound enamel blocks and 64 blocks bearing artificially-produced initial caries were produced from human permanent molar teeth. During each treatment period, lasting 14 days per arm, two blocks, one sound and one lesion-bearing, were exposed to either 5% nanoHAP-containing or placebo dental lotion after tooth-brushing with 5% nanoHAP toothpaste, via an intra-oral appliance worn by 30 adults in each of the study groups. Baseline and post-test mineral loss were quantified using transverse microradiography (TMR). One-sided t-test of one group mean was used for intragroup comparison, while two-sided t-test of two independent means was used to compare the two dental lotions. RESULTS: Pairwise comparison (baseline vs. post-test) indicated significant (p<.001) remineralization by nanoHAP toothpaste in both groups. However, when compared against each other, there was a significantly (p<.001) greater percentage of remineralization with nanoHAP lotion [58.4(±1.8)%] than with placebo lotion [37.7(±2.2)%]. TMR examination showed absolute demineralization inhibition in sound enamel blocks exposed to either lotions. CONCLUSIONS: Toothpaste containing 5% nanoHAP effectively remineralized initial caries and inhibited demineralization of healthy enamel; however, the application of a dental lotion containing 5% nanoHAP after brushing resulted in superior remineralization compared to a placebo lotion. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Dental lotion containing 5% nanohydroxyapatite used immediately after toothbrushing with 5% nanohydroxyapatite toothpaste can serve as an adjunct to enhance the clinical benefits of the toothpaste.

ABSTRACT

The past decade has seen significant progresses in the ability to fabricate new mesoporous thin films with highly controlled pore systems and emerging applications in sensing, electrical and thermal isolation, microfluidics, solar cells engineering, energy storage, and catalysis. Heat management at the micro- and nanoscale is a key issue in most of these applications, requiring a complete thermal characterization of the films that is commonly performed using electrical methods. Here, plasmonic-induced heating (through Au NPs) is combined with Tb3+/Eu3+ luminescence thermometry to measure the thermal conductivity of silica and titania mesoporous nanolayers. This innovative method yields values in accord with those measured by the evasive and destructive conventional 3ω-electrical method, simultaneously overcoming their main limitations, for example, a mandatory deposition of additional isolating and metal layers over the films and the previous knowledge of the thermal contact resistance between the heating and the mesoporous layers.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of paclitaxel associated with lipid nanoemulsions (LDE-PTX) on postoperative scarring in rabbits undergoing trabeculectomy. METHODS: Thirty-four rabbits that underwent trabeculectomy were allocated to four groups: LDE-PTX/SC (n = 9), treated with LDE-PTX (1.5 mg, intraoperative subconjunctival injection); LDE-PTX/IV (n = 9), treated with LDE-PTX (4 mg/kg per day intravenously) at the end of the surgery and once per week for 3 weeks; MMC (n = 9), treated with intraoperative 0.4 mg/mL mitomycin-C for 3 minutes; and control group (CTL, n = 7), without treatment. Bleb characteristics and IOP were evaluated over 4 weeks. Animals were killed on day 28. Histologic analyses were performed to assess the amount of scarring and toxicity to the conjunctiva and ciliary body. RESULTS: Groups were similar with respect to IOP and anterior chamber depth during the 28-day observation period. The LDE-PTX/SC, LDE-PTX/IV, and MMC groups showed greater bleb height than CTL on days 14 and 21 (P < 0.001). The LDE-PTX/SC, LDE-PTX/IV, and MMC groups showed longer bleb survival time than CTL (P < 0.001). The LDE-PTX/SC, LDE-PTX/IV, and MMC groups were equally effective in reducing fibrosis (P < 0.001), number of blood vessels (P < 0.001), and chronic inflammatory cells (P < 0.01) at the surgical site. However, LDE-PTX/SC and LDE-PTX/IV treatments had lower conjunctival (P < 0.001) and ciliary body toxicity (P < 0.01), compared with MMC. CONCLUSIONS: The LDE-PTX/SC was effective in reducing the scarring process following trabeculectomy to the same extent as MMC, but with considerably less toxicity to the conjunctiva and ciliary body. The LDE-PTX/IV was somewhat less effective than LDE-PTX/SC or MMC, but could have potential as a postoperative adjuvant treatment. Therefore, the LDE-PTX preparation in both administration routes may offer promising options for wound-healing modulation in the surgical treatment of glaucoma.

ABSTRACT

This manuscript reports the synthesis and characterization of the first organic-inorganic hybrid material exhibiting efficient multimodal spectral converting properties. The nanocomposite, made of Er(3+), Yb(3+) codoped zirconia nanoparticles (NPs) entrapped in a di-ureasil d-U(600) hybrid matrix, is prepared by an easy two-step sol-gel synthesis leading to homogeneous and transparent materials that can be very easily processed as monolith or film. Extensive structural characterization reveals that zirconia nanocrystals of 10-20 nm in size are efficiently dispersed into the hybrid matrix and that the local structure of the di-ureasil is not affected by the presence of the NPs. A significant enhancement in the refractive index of the di-ureasil matrix with the incorporation of the ZrO2 nanocrystals is observed. The optical study demonstrates that luminescent properties of both constituents are perfectly preserved in the final hybrid. Thus, the material displays a white-light photoluminescence from the di-ureasil component upon excitation at UV/visible radiation and also intense green and red emissions from the Er(3+)- and Yb(3+)-doped NPs after NIR excitation. The dynamics of the optical processes were also studied as a function of the lanthanide content and the thickness of the films. Our results indicate that these luminescent hybrids represent a low-cost, environmentally friendly, size-controlled, easily processed and chemically stable alternative material to be used in light harvesting devices such as luminescent solar concentrators, optical fibres and sensors. Furthermore, this synthetic approach can be extended to a wide variety of luminescent NPs entrapped in hybrid matrices, thus leading to multifunctional and versatile materials for efficient tuneable nonlinear optical nanodevices.

Ectopic cilia are rare in humans. We report a 6-year-old girl with typical characteristics of ectopic cilia as described in the rare cases reported in the literature, in association with cutaneous lesions that appeared to be hypochromic nevi. This framework could be a different clinical presentation of ectopic cilia.

ABSTRACT

There is an increasing demand for accurate, non-invasive and self-reference temperature measurements as technology progresses into the nanoscale. This is particularly so in micro- and nanofluidics where the comprehension of heat transfer and thermal conductivity mechanisms can play a crucial role in areas as diverse as energy transfer and cell physiology. Here we present two luminescent ratiometric nanothermometers based on a magnetic core coated with an organosilica shell co-doped with Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) chelates. The design of the hybrid host and chelate ligands permits the working of the nanothermometers in a nanofluid at 293-320 K with an emission quantum yield of 0.38 ± 0.04, a maximum relative sensitivity of 1.5% K(-1) at 293 K and a spatio-temporal resolution (constrained by the experimental setup) of 64 × 10(-6) m/150 × 10(-3) s (to move out of 0.4 K--the temperature uncertainty). The heat propagation velocity in the nanofluid, (2.2 ± 0.1) × 10(-3) m s(-1), was determined at 294 K using the nanothermometers' Eu(3+)/Tb(3+) steady-state spectra. There is no precedent of such an experimental measurement in a thermographic nanofluid, where the propagation velocity is measured from the same nanoparticles used to measure the temperature.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: IgG4-related sclerosing disease is a new clinicopathologic systemic entity, which can involve ocular adnexal structures, such as lacrimal glands and orbital tissues. However, this entity seems to display a more diffuse, frequently bilateral, pattern in such cases. Conjunctival involvement has not been reported in this disease. METHODS: We report the case of a 67-year-old woman with left upper palpebral mass for 5 months. A biopsy was performed, and the patient underwent systemic evaluation for IgG4-related disease. RESULTS: The clinicopathologic study revealed intense lymphoplasmacytic and sclerosing inflammation, with IgG4-positive plasma cells and an IgG4:IgG ratio >40%. The conjunctiva was also involved, which was different from previous studies. The only abnormality was hyperglycemia at 180 mg/dL (reference range, 70-99 mg/dL) and a raised glycosylated hemoglobin at 7.8%. Serum IgG and IgG4 levels were normal. CONCLUSIONS: Our case presented an unusual framework of ocular adnexal IgG4-related inflammation, with a more benign and restricted palpebral manifestation involving the conjunctiva.

ABSTRACT

The continuous decrease on the geometric size of electronic devices and integrated circuits generates higher local power densities and localized heating problems that cannot be characterized by conventional thermographic techniques. Here, a self-referencing intensity-based molecular thermometer involving a di-ureasil organic-inorganic hybrid thin film co-doped with Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) tris (ß-diketonate) chelates is used to obtain the temperature map of a FR4 printed wiring board with spatio-temporal resolutions of 0.42 µm/4.8 ms.

ABSTRACT

In this work we proposed a relative humidity (RH) sensor based on a Bragg grating written in an optical fiber, associated with a coating of organo-silica hybrid material prepared by the sol-gel method. The organo-silica-based coating has a strong adhesion to the optical fiber and its expansion is reversibly affected by the change in the RH values (15.0-95.0%) of the surrounding environment, allowing an increased sensitivity (22.2 pm/%RH) and durability due to the presence of a siliceous-based inorganic component. The developed sensor was tested in a real structure health monitoring essay, in which the RH inside two concrete blocks with different porosity values was measured over 1 year. The results demonstrated the potential of the proposed optical sensor in the monitoring of civil engineering structures.

ABSTRACT

Non-invasive precise thermometers working at the nanoscale with high spatial resolution, where the conventional methods are ineffective, have emerged over the last couple of years as a very active field of research. This has been strongly stimulated by the numerous challenging requests arising from nanotechnology and biomedicine. This critical review offers a general overview of recent examples of luminescent and non-luminescent thermometers working at nanometric scale. Luminescent thermometers encompass organic dyes, QDs and Ln(3+)ions as thermal probes, as well as more complex thermometric systems formed by polymer and organic-inorganic hybrid matrices encapsulating these emitting centres. Non-luminescent thermometers comprise of scanning thermal microscopy, nanolithography thermometry, carbon nanotube thermometry and biomaterials thermometry. Emphasis has been put on ratiometric examples reporting spatial resolution lower than 1 micron, as, for instance, intracellular thermometers based on organic dyes, thermoresponsive polymers, mesoporous silica NPs, QDs, and Ln(3+)-based up-converting NPs and ß-diketonate complexes. Finally, we discuss the challenges and opportunities in the development for highly sensitive ratiometric thermometers operating at the physiological temperature range with submicron spatial resolution.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to investigate the mechanisms underlying the endogenous control of nociception at a peripheral level during inflammation. Using a pharmacological approach and the rat paw pressure test, we assessed the effect of an intraplantar injection of naloxone, an opioid receptor antagonist, and bestatin, an aminopeptidase inhibitor, on hyperalgesia induced by carrageenan, which mimics an inflammatory process, or prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)), which directly sensitizes nociceptors. Naloxone induced a significant and dose-dependent (25, 50 or 100 µg) increase in carrageenan-induced hyperalgesia, but not PGE(2)-induced hyperalgesia. Bestatin (400 µg/paw) significantly counteracted carrageenan-induced hyperalgesia, inducing an increase in the nociceptive threshold compared to control, but it did not modify hyperalgesia induced by PGE(2) injection into the rat paw. Positive ß-endorphin immunoreactivity was increased in paw inflammation induced by carrageenan in comparison with the control group. However, PGE(2) did not significantly alter the immunostained area. These results provide evidence for activation of the endogenous opioidergic system during inflammation and indicate that this system regulates hyperalgesia through a negative feedback mechanism, modulating it at a peripheral level.

ABSTRACT

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(36)H(24)N(6), comprises a whole mol-ecule. Supra-molecular inter-actions between neighbouring mol-ecules are essentially π-π stacking inter-actions with small inter-planar distances [3.5140 (15) and 3.6041 (15) Å]. The central phenyl-ene ring is tilted with respect to the two pyridine substituents, subtending angles of 36.17 (11) and 34.95 (11)°. Three of the peripheral pyridine substituents are almost coplanar with the central pyridines [dihedral angles = 5.10 (12)-8.21 (12)°], but one subtends an angle of 24.86 (12)°.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical profile of newborns with congenital hypothyroidism identified by the Newborn Screening Program of the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, between 2000 and 2006. METHODS: Analysis of factors involved in this profile, including: TSH and FT4 levels (determined by chemiluminescence, with limits of normality set at 0.3-5.0 microUI/mL and 0.8-1.8 ng/dL, respectively), age at diagnosis and age at treatment. The study sample consisted of 443 children, 55.8% were female and 95% were seen before completing 60 days of life. RESULTS: The most prevalent clinical signals were: umbilical hernia (51%), enlarged anterior fontanel (50.3%), and open posterior fontanel (47.2%). Hypotonia, macroglossia and feeding difficulties were the clinical signs most frequently associated with the biochemical severity of the disease. A delay in bone age was present in 32.1% of the children at diagnosis. The median of serum TSH and FT4 was 120 microUI/mL and 0.62 ng/dL, respectively. The median age at start of treatment was 28 days. CONCLUSION: There are some early clinical signs that suggest a diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism. Therefore, when presented with a child exhibiting these signs, serum TSH and FT4 should be assayed in order to confirm or rule out the disease, irrespective of the result of screening. Age at start of treatment remains high, but strategies are being implemented to reduce it.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o perfil clínico de recém-nascidos com hipotireoidismo congênito identificados pelo Programa Estadual de Triagem Neonatal de Minas Gerais entre 2000 e 2006. MÉTODOS: A frequência das manifestações clínicas de hipotireoidismo congênito foi analisada em relação aos níveis de hormônio estimulante da tireoide T4L (determinados por quimioluminescência, valores de referência de 0,3 a 5,0 µUI/mL e 0,8 a 1,8 ng/dL, respectivamente) e idades ao diagnóstico e tratamento. Estudou-se 443 crianças, sendo 55,8 por cento do sexo feminino e 95 por cento delas com menos 60 dias de vida. RESULTADOS: Os sinais clínicos mais prevalentes foram: hérnia umbilical (51 por cento), fontanela anterior ampla (50,3 por cento) e fontanela posterior aberta (47,2 por cento). Hipotonia, macroglossia e sucção débil foram os sinais mais associados com a gravidade bioquímica da doença. Em 32,1 por cento das crianças houve atraso na idade óssea ao diagnóstico. As medianas de TSH e T4L séricos foram 120 µUI/mL e 0,62 ng/dL, respectivamente. A mediana da idade de início de tratamento foi de 28 dias. CONCLUSÃO: Existem sinais clínicos precoces que sugerem o diagnóstico de hipotireoidismo congênito. Portanto, diante de uma criança com esses sinais, devem ser avaliados TSH e T4L séricos para confirmar ou excluir a doença, independentemente do resultado do teste de triagem. A idade de início de tratamento ainda foi elevada, mas o programa vem adotando estratégias para redução da mesma.

ABSTRACT

New europium and gadolinium tris-beta-diketonate complexes have been prepared and incorporated in sol-gel-derived organic-inorganic hybrids, named di-ureasils. The general formula [Ln(btfa)3(4,4'-bpy)(EtOH)] (Ln=Eu, Gd; 4,4'-bpy=4,4'-bipyridine; btfa=4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione) for the complexes was confirmed by X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis. The ground-state geometry of the Eu3+ complex was calculated from the Sparkle/AM1 model. The calculated quantum yield obtained from the Sparkle model and from the crystal structure (both 46%) are in satisfactory agreement with the experimental value (38+/-4%). In the isolated complex the most efficient luminescence channel is S0-->S1-->T-->(5D1, 5D0)-->7F0-6, where the exchange mechanism dominates in the energy-transfer channel T-->(5D1, 5D0). For the Eu3+-based di-ureasils a 50% quantum yield enhancement compared to the Eu3+ complex is observed, which suggests an effective hybrid host-metal ion interaction and an active energy-transfer channel between the hybrid host and the Eu3+ complex. The Eu3+-based di-ureasils are photostable under UVA (360 nm) excitation, whereas under UVB (320 nm) and UVC (290 nm) photodegradation occurs.
