ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND & AIMS: COVID-19 is a respiratory syndrome caused by SARS-CoV-2. In the absence of effective treatment and vaccines, social distance (SD) is essential to reduce the spread of the virus. However, SD generates several behavioral changes, especially in psychological (i.e., emotions and depressive symptoms) and lifestyle-related parameters (i.e., diet, physical activity, and sleep), and the aged people could be more susceptible to COVID-19 SD-related effects (i.e., loneliness, stress, fear, concerns about life, etc.). As such, we aimed to explore the relationship between lifestyle- (physical exercise practice and sleep quality) and psychological-related factors with the dietary practices derived from the Brazilian National Food Guide of older adult during the COVID-19 SD. METHODS: A web-based survey was conducted in São Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected between August and December 2020 (a period of social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The questions were extracted from validated questionnaires to verify dietary practices (score of adhesion to the food guide for the Brazilian population), sleep quality (by Pittsburgh questionnaire), emotional food-related dimensions (by Three-factor Eating Questionnaire), and depression symptoms (by Beck's questionnaire). RESULTS: Results were from 229 aged people (mean age 66.5 ± 6.02 years old; mean BMI 27.5 ± 4.32 kg/m2; mean sleep duration 8.23 ± 1.41 h; Pittsburg sleep quality score 6.55 ± 4.83; dietary practice score 42.5 ± 6.47). In the adjusted-linear regression model, we verified that physical exercise practice at home (ß = 2.179; 95% CI: 0.599 to 3.758; p = 0.007) during COVID-19 SD was positively associated with better dietary practices in aged people. In contrast, emotional eating was negatively associated with dietary practices (ß = -0.051; 95% CI: -0.092 to - 0.009; p = 0.015). CONCLUSION: We conclude that in aged people, physical exercise practice at home during COVID-19 SD was positively associated with better dietary practices, while emotional eating was negatively associated.

ABSTRACT

Aims: To assess non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patient-centered outcomes in the real world. Methods: This is a prospective study of NSCLC patients treated at a private cancer care institution in Brazil between 2014 and 2019. Results: The report comprises 337 patients. Advanced stage was associated with higher symptom burden - fatigue (p = 0.03), pain (p < 0.001) and arm pain (p = 0.022) - and worse global, social and physical functioning (all p < 0.001). In the first 2 years, most factors evolved to either improvement or stability: cough (p = 0.02), pain (p = 0.002), global functioning (p < 0.001) and emotional functioning (p < 0.001). Staging (p < 0.001), fatigue (p = 0.001) and gender (p = 0.004) were independently associated with overall survival. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the feasibility of conducting real-world prospective analysis of patient-centered outcomes.

Lay abstract This study looked at patient-centered outcomes in lung cancer in a real-world setting. Standardized quality-of-life questionnaires were used to actively measure patients' perception of their functional well-being and health in a clinical setting. Three hundred thirty-seven patients were enrolled in a private cancer center in Brazil between 2014 and 2019. We demonstrated that patients diagnosed at advanced stages presented with more symptoms and lower capacity to perform daily activities. However, symptoms and functioning tended to improve during treatment. Our results show that it is possible to put patients at the heart of cancer care and use their experience to guide clinical approach.

ABSTRACT

Actions that enable knowledge of the distribution, magnitude and exposure trend to the main modifiable risk factors (smoking, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, excessive weight and alcohol consumption) are extremely important in planning prevention strategies and control of NCCD. For that purpose reliable field information are essential to the proper of the organization of these actions. Objective: this study aimed to describe the sociodemographic profile, clinical and lifestyle of Palmeirina (Pernambuco, Brazil) population during the Rondon Project - Guararapes Operation. Methods: we conducted epidemiological study with subjects over 18 years, residents of Palmeirina/PE. For data collection was performed interview followed by assessment of body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP) and occasional blood glucose. Results and discussion: the sample consisted of 194 individuals (approximately 3,9 percent of the population above 18 years in the city), of whom 31.4 percent were men and 68.6 percent women. The age ranged 18-87 years, with mean 47.4 ± 18.1 years. The predominance was of marrieds (52.6 percent) and agriculturists (38.7 percent). In education, 5.7 percent had a higher education, 17 percent had a completed high school, 12.4 percent had a completed elementary school, 56.2 percent not completed elementary school and 8.8 percent had never attended school. In lifestyle, it was found in 9.3 percent smoking habit, 16 percent alcohol, 65.5 percent physical inactivity. In the assessment of BMI, there was 45.9 percent overweight and 14.4 percent obese. In BP measurement, 65.5 percent had pressures above normal, ranked in prehypertension stage (14.4 percent), hypertension stage 1 (10.8 percent), hypertension stage 2 (9.8 percent), hypertension stage 3 (11,9 percent) and isolated systolic hypertension (18.6 percent). In occasional blood glucose, 3.6 percent presented impaired glucose tolerance (maior ou igual a 140 to <200 mg/dl) and 4.1...
