ABSTRACT

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is associated with cognitive impairments in humans. A well-established animal model of T1D is induced through the administration of streptozotocin (STZ), a glucose analog that induces pancreatic ß-cell death, resulting in hyperglycemia and cognitive impairment linked to neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, a key inflammatory mediator, is elevated in the central nervous system (CNS) of diabetic animals. In this study, we utilized TNFR1 knockout mice to investigate the role of TNFR1 signaling in short-term T1D-related cognitive impairment. Our findings showed that diabetic animals did not develop cognitive damage within the first 2 weeks of T1D but exhibited reduced exploration in all behavioral tests. Our findings suggest that this reduction in exploration was attributable to motor impairment, as there was no reduction in motivated novelty-seeking behavior. Additionally, deletion of TNFR1 signaling attenuated gait speed impairment in diabetic mice, but did not affect other motor-related or exploratory behaviors.

ABSTRACT

The Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is the leading cause of acute respiratory infections in children. Currently, no safe, effective, or feasible option for pharmacological management of RSV exists. Hence, plant-derived natural compounds have been explored as promising antiviral agents. Mangifera indica is a globally distributed plant with reported anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and antiviral activities. Our study investigated the antiviral potential of a novel pectin from M. indica peels (PMi) and its chemically sulfated derivative (PSMi) against RSV in HEp-2 cells. The compounds were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). NMR analysis revealed the presence of ester and carboxylic acid groups in PMi, and sulfation resulted in a sulfation degree of 0.5. PMi and PSMi showed no cytotoxic effects even at concentrations as high as 2000 µg/mL. PSMi completely inhibited RSV infectivity (100-1.56 µg/mL, 50 % inhibitory concentration of viral infectivity = 0.77 ± 0.11 µg/mL). The mechanism of action was investigated using the 50 % tissue culture infectious dose assay. PSMi displayed virucidal activity at concentrations from 100 to 6.25 µg/mL, and a significant reduction in viral infection was observed at all treatment times. Overall, PSMi is antiviral, cell-safe, and exhibits promising potential as an RSV treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the evidence of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Stem cells therapy (SCT) and Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWL) for the treatment of Peyronies disease (PD), including information from the main urological society guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review of PubMed articles published between 2000 and 2023 was conducted, utilizing keywords such as "Peyronie's Disease", "Penile curvature", "Platelet Rich Plasma", "Stem cells", and "Extracorporeal shockwave therapy". Only full-text articles in English were included, excluding case reports and opinions. RESULTS: A considerable number of clinical trials were conducted using PRP penile injections for therapy of PD, showing reduction of curvature, plaque size and improvement in quality of life. Preclinical studies in rats have shown the potential benefit of adipose-derived stem cells, with improvements in erectile function and fibrosis. Human studies with mesenchymal stem cells demonstrated promising results, with reduction of curvature and plaque size. ESWL effects on PD were investigated in randomized clinical trials and demonstrated no significant impact in curvature or plaque size, but reasonable effect on pain control. CONCLUSION: Restorative therapies has emerged as an innovative treatment option for PD and the results from current studies appear to be promising and demonstrated good safety profile. Unfortunately, due to scarce evidence, PRP and SCT are still considered experimental by American Urological Association (AUA) and European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines. ESWT is recommended, by the same guidelines, for pain control only. More high-quality studies with long-term follow-up outcomes are needed to evaluate efficacy and reproducibility of those therapies.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT is considered the imaging gold standard for detection of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands . However, increased uptake might also occur in the thyroid gland. The aim of our study was to assess the incidence and significance of 18F-fluorocholine uptake in the thyroid gland in patients with hyperparathyroidism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study includes 195 consecutive patients with hyperparathyroidism, who underwent 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT, for detection of hyperfunctioning parathyroid glands. PET/CT images were reviewed by two nuclear medicine physicians for the presence of focal or diffuse thyroid uptake. PET/CT results were compared with laboratory parameters, ultrasonography, EU-TIRADS classification in the presence of thyroid nodules, cytology, and final histology. RESULTS: 25 patients (13%) showed 18F-fluorocholine uptake in the thyroid gland: focal thyroid uptake (FTU) in 7 patients (4%), diffuse thyroid uptake (DTU) in 8 patients (4%), and combined uptake (FTU + DTU) in 10 patients (5%), with a total of 20 active thyroid nodules. There was no correlation between EU-TIRADS classification and PET parameters. One highly 18F-fluorocholine active thyroid nodule and one isoactive thyroid nodule turned out to be papillary thyroid cancers in the final histology; 50% of the patients with DTU had Hashimoto's thyroiditis. CONCLUSION: Incidental 18F-fluorocholine uptake in the thyroid gland was observed in 13% of patients. As reported for 18F-FDG, focal 18F-fluorocholine uptake might represent thyroid cancer and should be evaluated with ultrasound and, if indicated, with fine-needle aspiration cytology. Diffuse 18F-fluorocholine uptake most likely represents multinodular goiter or Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

ABSTRACT

Serotonergic psychedelics have potential therapeutic effects in treating anxiety and mood disorders, often after a single dose, and are suggested to have plasticity-inducing action. However, a comprehensive mechanism of action is still lacking. Here, we investigated how a single dose of the short-acting 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) acts on gene expression from microdissected brain regions (anterior cingulate cortex - ACC; basolateral amygdala - BLA; ventral hippocampus CA1 region - vCA1 and dentate gyrus-DG) of naive and stressed mice. Specifically, we compared gene expression of Arc, Zif268, BDNF, CREB, mTORC1, NR2A, TRIP8b, and NFkB in mice injected with 5-MeO-DMT or saline at different time points (1 h, 5 h, or 5 days prior). 5-MeO-DMT altered mRNA expression of immediate early genes Arc and ZiF268 in the ACC, BLA, and vCA1, while NR2A expression was decreased after 5 h in the vCA1. We also found a long-term increase in TRIP8b, a gene related to the modulation of neuronal activity, in the vCA1 after 5 days. Behaviorally, 5-MeO-DMT treated mice showed mixed anxiolytic and anxiogenic effects in the elevated plus maze and open field test 24 h or 5 days after treatment. However, pre-treated mice subjected to acute stress showed both lower corticosterone levels and robust anxiolytic effects of 5-MeO-DMT administration. Together, our findings provide insights into the molecular actions of 5-MeO-DMT in the brain related to anxiolytic effects of behavior.

BACKGROUND: Several research groups have explored the potential of scandium radionuclides for theragnostic applications due to their longer half-lives and equal or similar coordination chemistry between their diagnostic and therapeutic counterparts, as well as lutetium-177 and terbium-161, respectively. Unlike the gallium-68/lutetium-177 pair, which may show different in-vivo uptake patterns, the use of scandium radioisotopes promises consistent behaviour between diagnostic and therapeutic radiopeptides. An advantage of scandium's longer half-life over gallium-68 is the ability to study radiopeptide uptake over extended periods and its suitability for centralized production and distribution. However, concerns arise from scandium-44's decay characteristics and scandium-43's high production costs. This study aimed to evaluate the dosimetric implications of using scandium radioisotopes with somatostatin analogues against gallium-68 for PET imaging of neuroendocrine tumours. METHODS: Absorbed dose per injected activity (AD/IA) from the generated time-integrated activity curve (TIAC) were estimated using the radiopeptides [43/44/44mSc]Sc- and [68Ga]Ga-DOTATATE. The kidneys, liver, spleen, and red bone marrow (RBM) were selected for dose estimation studies. The EGSnrc and MCNP6.1 Monte Carlo (MC) codes were used with female (AF) and male (AM) ICRP phantoms. The results were compared to Olinda/EXM software, and the effective dose concentrations assessed, varying composition between the scandium radioisotopes. RESULTS: Our findings showed good agreement between the MC codes, with - 3 ± 8% mean difference. Kidneys, liver, and spleen showed differences between the MC codes (min and max) in a range of - 4% to 8%. This was observed for both phantoms for all radiopeptides used in the study. Compared to Olinda/EXM the largest observed difference was for the RBM, of 21% for the AF and 16% for the AM for scandium- and gallium-based radiopeptides. Despite the differences, our findings showed a higher absorbed dose on [43/44Sc]Sc-DOTATATE compared to its 68Ga-based counterpart. CONCLUSION: This study found that [43/44Sc]Sc-DOTATATE delivers a higher absorbed dose to organs at risk compared to [68Ga]Ga-DOTATATE, assuming equal distribution. This is due to the longer half-life of scandium radioisotopes compared to gallium-68. However, calculated doses are within acceptable ranges, making scandium radioisotopes a feasible replacement for gallium-68 in PET imaging, potentially offering enhanced diagnostic potential with later timepoint imaging.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and quantify the prevalence of increased uptake in SPECT/CT in symptomatic and asymptomatic foot and ankle joints in patients with osteoarthritis. METHODS: In 63 patients with osteoarthritis (OA), the painful symptomatic foot (SF) and asymptomatic contralateral foot (AF) were imaged with bone SPECT/CT. Presence, localization, and maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of the active joints were assessed for SF and AF. CT OA grade (grade 1: mild, grade 2: moderate, grade 3: severe) and presence of five morphological features of OA (joint space narrowing, subchondral sclerosis, subchondral cysts, irregular joint margins, and osteophytes) were evaluated. RESULTS: In total 32 (51%) patients showed additional uptake in the AF, whereas 31 (49%) patients showed it only in the SF. SF showed more active joints than AF (106 vs. 43). CT OA grades positively correlated with SUVmax (Kendall's tau b = 0.62, P < 0.001). SUVmax values (per foot) in SF were higher in patients with uptake in bilateral feet (SF+, AF+) [median (IQR): 17.9 (10.7-23.3)] as compared with patients with active sites only in the SF (SF+, AF-) [10.4 (6.4-19.1); P < 0.001]. Number of active OA joints in SF was higher in patients with bilateral uptake (P = 0.017). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, half of the patients exhibited increased uptake in the contralateral asymptomatic foot. SUVmax showed a significant correlation to CT osteoarthritis grade, in the symptomatic and asymptomatic foot. Future follow-up studies will provide further insights into the prognostic and therapeutic value of these findings.

Abstract Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a successful surgery in the treatment of hip pain, but there are potential complications, of which dislocation is one of the most common. Dislocation management is a challenging problem that requires a multimodal approach, and the use of dual mobility implants is an option. We present a patient with a history of femoral neck fracture who underwent THA with a double mobility implant. On the 18th postoperative day, after a fall to the ground, she developed prosthesis dislocation and had a complication after closed reduction, a subsequent intraprosthetic dislocation. After a radiographic diagnosis, the patient presented mechanical signs of hip flexion caused by a disassociated double mobility implant. The revision surgery was indicated, but the patient chose not to perform the necessary surgical procedure. A careful postoperative study of the radiographs revealed an eccentric femoral head and evidence of disassociated implantation in the surrounding soft tissues. Radiographs after closed reduction of intraprosthetic dislocations should be examined thoroughly.


Resumo A artroplastia total do quadril (ATQ) é uma cirurgia bem-sucedida no tratamento da dor no quadril, mas existem complicações potenciais, das quais a luxação é uma das mais comuns. O gerenciamento das luxações é um problema desafiador que requer uma abordagem multimodal, e o uso de implantes de mobilidade dupla é uma opção. Apresentamos uma paciente com história de fratura do colo do fêmur que foi submetida a ATQ com um implante de dupla mobilidade. No 18° dia pós-operatório, após queda ao solo, a paciente evoluiu com luxação da prótese e teve uma complicação após redução fechada, uma luxação intraprotética subsequente. Após um diagnóstico radiográfico, a paciente apresentou sinais mecânicos na flexão do quadril causados por um implante de mobilidade dupla desassociado. A cirurgia de revisão foi indicada, mas a paciente optou por não realizar o procedimento cirúrgico necessário. O estudo pós-operatório cuidadoso das radiografias revelou uma cabeça femoral excêntrica e evidências do implante desassociado nos tecidos moles circundantes. As radiografias após a redução fechada das luxações intraprotéticas devem ser examinadas minunciosamente.

ABSTRACT

The mechanisms underlying the formation of necrotic regions within avascular tumors are complex and poorly understood. In this paper, we investigate the formation of a necrotic core in a 3D tumor cell culture within a microfluidic device, considering oxygen, nutrients, and the microenvironment acidification by means of a computational-mathematical model. Our objective is to simulate cell processes, including proliferation and death inside a microfluidic device, according to the microenvironmental conditions. We employed approximation utilizing finite element models taking into account glucose, oxygen, and hydrogen ions diffusion, consumption and production, as well as cell proliferation, migration and death, addressing how tumor cells evolve under different conditions. The resulting mathematical model was examined under different scenarios, being capable of reproducing cell death and proliferation under different cell concentrations, and the formation of a necrotic core, in good agreement with experimental data reported in the literature. This approach not only advances our fundamental understanding of necrotic core formation but also provides a robust computational platform to study personalized therapeutic strategies, offering an important tool in cancer research and treatment design.

ABSTRACT

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and gastric sleeve (GS) have been associated with significant reductions in bone mineral density (BMD) and fluctuations in serum levels of calciotropic hormones. These changes pose a risk to bone health. The study assessed the short-term (12 and 24 months) effects of RYGB and GS on BMD and calciotropic hormones. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched. Analyses considered follow-up (12 and 24 months) with BMD as main outcome at three sites (femoral neck, total hip, and lumbar spine) and one for each calciotropic hormone (25 OH vitamin D and parathyroid hormone [PTH]). Estimated effect sizes were calculated as standardized mean differences (SMD), confidence interval of 95%, and P value. Nine studies totaling 473 participants (RYGB = 261 and GS = 212) were included. RYGB resulted in lower BMD than GS at 12 months for femoral neck (SMD = -0.485, 95% CI [-0.768, -0.202], P = .001), lumbar spine (SMD = -0.471, 95% CI [-0.851, -0.092], P = .015), and total hip (SMD = -0.616, 95% CI [-0.972, -0.259], P = .001), and at 24 months for total hip (SMD = -0.572, 95% CI [-0.907, -0.238], P = .001). At 24 months, 25 OH vitamin D was lower in RYGB than GS (SMD = -0.958 [-1.670, -0.245], P = .008) and PTH levels were higher in RYGB than in GS (SMD = 0.968 [0.132, 1.804, P = .023]). RYGB demonstrated significant reduction in regional BMD. It also induces lower serum 25 OH vitamin D and higher PTH levels than GS. The results support the need for preventive bone health measures in the short-term postoperative period, especially in the case of RYGB.

AIM: The present retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate luxated permanent teeth for pulp prognosis and risk factors. METHODOLOGY: Case records and radiographs of 224 patients, involving 427 luxated permanent teeth, referred for treatment at the Dental Trauma Center-School of Dentistry, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, (DTC-SD-UFMG) from 2014 to 2022, were assessed for pulp prognosis classified as vitality, necrosis and pulp canal obliteration (PCO). A competing risk survival analysis estimated the hazards of the three outcomes, and the effect of demographic, clinical and treatment variables was tested using a cause specific Cox regression model. RESULTS: Pulp vitality was found in163 teeth (38.2%), pulp necrosis in 120 teeth (28.1%) and 55 teeth (12.9%) developed PCO. Pulp vitality decreased in the presence of concomitant crown fractures (HR 0.38 95% CI [0.2-0.8] p = 0.006). The risk of pulp necrosis (HR 0.62 95% CI [0.4-0.96] p = 0.03) was lower in cases with open apices but increased with concomitant crown fractures (HR 4.0 95% CI [2.6-6.1] p = 0.001) and intrusions (HR 2.3 95% CI [1.2-4.1] p = 0.007). Lateral or extrusive luxations (HR 3.0 95% CI [1.3-6.9] p = 0.001) and open apices (HR 2.4 95% CI [1.2-4.7] p = 0.01) showed higher rates of PCO. CONCLUSION: Type of luxation, the diameter of the apical foramen, and the presence of concomitant crown fractures were main determinants of pulp prognosis after luxation injuries in permanent teeth. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Pulp prognosis after tooth luxation is dependent on the presence and direction of tooth displacement together with infection control. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to propose diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) values for mammography in Switzerland. For the data collection, a survey was conducted among a sufficient number of centres, including five University hospitals, several cantonal hospitals, and large private clinics, covering all linguistic regions of Switzerland to be representative of the clinical practice. The data gathered contained the mean glandular dose (MGD), the compressed breast thickness (CBT), the mammography model and the examination parameters for each acquisition. The data collected was sorted into the following categories: 2D or digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) examination, craniocaudal (CC) or mediolateral oblique (MLO) projection, and eight categories of CBT ranging from 20 mm to 100 mm in 10 mm intervals. A total of 24 762 acquisitions were gathered in 31 centres on 36 mammography units from six manufacturers. The analysis showed that the data reflects the practice in Switzerland. The results revealed that the MGD is larger for DBT than for 2D acquisitions for the same CBT. From 20-30 mm to 90-100 mm of CBT, the 75th percentile of the MGD values obtained increased from 0.81 mGy to 2.55 mGy for 2D CC acquisitions, from 0.83 mGy to 2.96 mGy for 2D MLO acquisitions, from 1.22 mGy to 3.66 mGy for DBT CC acquisitions and from 1.33 mGy to 4.04 mGy for DBT MLO acquisitions. The results of the survey allow us to propose Swiss DRLs for mammography according to the examination type (2D/DBT), projection (CC/MLO) and CBT. The proposed values are very satisfactory in comparison with other studies.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Permanent liquor diversion is associated with a high risk of failure and often requires re-intervention. The ventriculo-gallbladder shunt (VGS) has been recognized as a last-resort alternative for treating hydrocephalus when the peritoneum or other distal sites are no longer suitable for receiving shunts. This article aims to report a case from a neurosurgery referral service in Brazil and review the literature on this issue. METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for data screening and extraction. The reported case was conducted with ethical approval from the neurosurgical hospital's ethics committee. RESULTS: G.B.S, male, 43 years old, no comorbidities, who has been dealing with a 12-year history of hydrocephalus, with post-surgical chronic fungal meningitis. Two years ago, he underwent a ventriculoatrial shunt (VAS) placement due to multiple ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) failures. Endocarditis was suspected, and the VAS was removed. As an alternative, VGS was implanted 6 months ago, and since then, there has been no need for a new system review. The gallbladder has an absorptive capacity of 1500 cc of liquid daily, which is more than the normal daily production of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Therefore, it is a good alternative when the ventriculoperitoneal shunt is not feasible due to postsurgical peritoneal adhesions or when there are contraindications for ventriculoatrial shunts. CONCLUSION: VGS is an alternative for patients who cannot undergo the most common surgical interventions, such as VPS.

A monitoria é uma atividade complementar que oferece apoio pedagógico e exerce papel importante na formação dos alunos de graduação e do próprio monitor, bem como em sua iniciação à docência. O presente relato tem como objetivoapresentar as experiências do desenvolvimento de um programa de monitoria, com suporte institucional, em uma disciplina de Endodontia de uma instituição de ensino superior federal. A equipe docente elaborou um plano de trabalho contemplando diferentes atividades pedagógicas, técnicas e científicas a serem desenvolvidas pelos monitores. Os seguintes resultados foram alcançados após quatro semestres: a) influência positiva no desempenho de 109 alunos com apenas três médias finais inferiores a sete; b) aprimoramento técnico-científico dos monitores com participação em workshopde instrumentação mecanizada em Endodontia; c) desenvolvimento científico dos monitores com a produção de materiais didáticos, projetos científicos, participação e apresentação de seis trabalhos em eventos científicos com três premiações, publicações de resumos em anais e produção de dois trabalhos de conclusão de curso; d) participação em ação institucional para reduzir aevasão no curso; e) elaboração de projeto de pesquisa para avaliação do desempenho de monitores estruturada por meio de questionário. Pode-se concluir que o desenvolvimento de um projeto de monitoria inserido no contexto de um programa de apoio acadêmico, com oferta de bolsas, pode gerar grande interesse de participação pelos discentes e que uma variedade de atividades propostas no plano de trabalho contribuiu de forma relevante para o processo ensino-aprendizado dos monitores e para a disciplina (AU).


La tutoria es una actividad complementaria que ofrece apoyo pedagógico y juega un papel importante en la formación de los estudiantes de pregrado y del propio tutor, así como en su iniciación a la docencia. Este informe tiene como objetivo presentar las experiencias de desarrollo de un programa de tutoría, con apoyo institucional, en una disciplina de Endodoncia en una institución de educación superior federal. El equipo docente elaboró un plan de trabajo que abarcaba diferentes actividades pedagógicas, técnicas y científicas a desarrollar por los monitores. Después de cuatro semestres se lograron los siguientes resultados: a) influencia positiva en el desempeño de 109 estudiantes con sólo tres promedios finales inferiores a siete; b) perfeccionamiento técnico-científico de tutores con participación en un taller de instrumentación mecanizada en Endodoncia; c) desarrollo científico de los tutores con la producción de materiales didácticos, proyectos científicos, participación y presentación de seis trabajos en eventos científicos con tres premios, publicación de resúmenes en anales y producción de dos trabajos de conclusión de curso; d) participación en acciones institucionales para reducir el abandono de cursos; e) elaboración de un proyecto de investigación para evaluar el desempeño de los tutores estructurado a través de un cuestionario. Se puede concluir que el desarrollo de un proyecto de tutoría en el contexto de un programa de apoyo académico, con la oferta de becas, puede generar gran interés de participación por parte de los estudiantes y que una variedad de actividades propuestas en el plan de trabajo contribuyeron significativamente para el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de los monitores y de la disciplina. Monitoring is a complementary activity that offers pedagogical support and plays an essential role in training undergraduate students and the monitor himself and their initiation to teaching. The report aimsto present the experiences of developing a monitoring program, with institutional support, in an endodontics discipline at a federal higher education institution. The teaching team prepared a work plan that contemplated different pedagogical, technical, and scientific activities to be developed by the monitors. The following results were achieved after four semesters: a) positive influence on the performance of 109 students with only three final averages lower than seven; b) technical and scientific improvement of the monitors with participation in a workshopon mechanized instrumentation in Endodontics; c) scientific development of the monitors with the production of didactic materials, scientific projects, participation and presentation of six papers in scientific events with three awards, publication of abstracts in annals and production of two-course completion papers; d) participation in institutional action to reduce dropout in the course; e) elaboration of a research project to evaluate the performance of monitors, structured through a questionnaire. It can be concluded that the development of a monitoring project inserted in the context of an academic support program, with the offer of scholarships, can generate significant interest in participation by students and that a variety of activities proposed in the work plan contributed in a relevant way to the teaching-learning process of the monitors and to the discipline (AU).

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Domestic violence (DV) encompasses a series of abusive behaviors, perpetrated in a family environment, against individuals of all ages and genders. Injuries to the head, neck, and face are frequent findings among victims of abuse, negatively impacting their quality of life. Although oral and maxillofacial injuries (OMFI) and traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are commonly diagnosed among DV victims, their prevalence is still unknown. This systematic review was aimed to assess the prevalence of OMFI and TDI among victims of DV. METHODS: The protocol of the review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023424235). Literature searches were performed in eight electronic databases, up to August 7th, 2023. Observational studies published in the Latin-roman alphabet and reporting the prevalence of OMFI and/or TDI were included. The Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool, checklist for prevalence studies, was used for quality assessment. Results were presented as qualitative and quantitative syntheses. RESULTS: Seventeen studies, totaling 12,375 victims of domestic violence, were included. Meta-analyses showed an overall prevalence of 29% (95% CI: 15%-48%, I2 = 99%) and 4% (95% CI: 1%-10%, I2 = 98%) for OMFI and TDI, respectively. Higher pooled prevalence for OMFI (41%, 95% CI: 13%-46%, I2 = 99%) was demonstrated in samples with only women. OMFI was less prevalent (20%) among DV victims under 18, while TDI was lower among adults (1%). Hospital samples presented higher pooled prevalence of OMFI (32%), and forensic data from fatal victims presented higher prevalence of TDI (8%). CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of OMFI and TDI in DV victims was 29% and 4%, respectively. Women victims of DV presented higher rates of OFMI (41%) and TDI (6%).

ABSTRACT

The production of sustainable materials with properties aimed at the additive manufacturing of electrochemical sensors has gained prestige in the scientific scenario. Here, a novel lab-made composite material using graphite (G) and carbon nitride (C3N4) embedded into polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymer is proposed to produce 3D-printed electrodes. PLA offers printability and mechanical stability in this composition, while G and C3N4 provide electrical properties and electrocatalytic sites, respectively. Characterizations by Raman and infrared spectroscopies and Energy Dispersive X-rays indicated that the G/C3N4/PLA composite was successfully obtained, while electron microscopy images revealed non-homogeneous rough surfaces. Better electrochemical properties were achieved when the G/C3N4/PLA proportion (35:5:60) was used. As a proof of concept, amaranth (AMR), a synthetic dye, was selected as an analyte, and a fast method using square wave voltammetry was developed. Utilizing the 3D-printed G/C3N4/PLA electrode, a more comprehensive linear range (0.2 to 4.2 µmol/L), a 5-fold increase in sensitivity (9.83 µmol-1 L µA), and better limits of detection (LOD = 0.06 µmol/L) and quantification (LOQ = 0.18 µmol/L) were achieved compared to the G/PLA electrode. Samples of jelly, popsicles, isotonic drinks, and food flavoring samples were analyzed, and similar results to those obtained by UV-vis spectrometry confirmed the method's reliability. Therefore, the described sensor is a simple, cost-effective alternative for assessing AMR in routine food analysis.

ABSTRACT

The European Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom (BSS Directive) includes optimisation of treatment with radiotherapeutic procedures based on patient dosimetry and verification of the absorbed doses delivered. The present policy statement summarises aspects of three directives relating to the therapeutic use of radiopharmaceuticals and medical devices, and outlines the steps needed for implementation of patient dosimetry for radioactive drugs. To support the transition from administrations of fixed activities to personalised treatments based on patient-specific dosimetry, EFOMP presents a number of recommendations including: increased networking between centres and disciplines to support data collection and development of codes-of-practice; resourcing to support an infrastructure that permits routine patient dosimetry; research funding to support investigation into individualised treatments; inter-disciplinary training and education programmes; and support for investigator led clinical trials. Close collaborations between the medical physicist and responsible practitioner are encouraged to develop a similar pathway as is routine for external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy. EFOMP's policy is to promote the roles and responsibilities of medical physics throughout Europe in the development of molecular radiotherapy to ensure patient benefit. As the BSS directive is adopted throughout Europe, unprecedented opportunities arise to develop informed treatments that will mitigate the risks of under- or over-treatments.

ABSTRACT

The prompt and accurate identification of the etiological agents of viral respiratory infections is a critical measure in mitigating outbreaks. In this study, we developed and clinically evaluated a novel melting-curve-based multiplex real-time PCR (M-m-qPCR) assay targeting the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) and nucleocapsid phosphoprotein N of SARS-CoV-2, the Matrix protein 2 of the Influenza A virus, the RdRp domain of the L protein from the Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus, and the polyprotein from Rhinovirus B genes. The analytical performance of the M-m-qPCR underwent assessment using in silico analysis and a panel of reference and clinical strains, encompassing viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens, exhibiting 100% specificity. Moreover, the assay showed a detection limit of 10 copies per reaction for all targeted pathogens using the positive controls. To validate its applicability, the assay was further tested in simulated nasal fluid spiked with the viruses mentioned above, followed by validation on nasopharyngeal swabs collected from 811 individuals. Among them, 13.4% (109/811) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, and 1.1% (9/811) tested positive for Influenza A. Notably, these results showed 100% concordance with those obtained using a commercial kit. Therefore, the M-m-qPCR exhibits great potential for the routine screening of these respiratory viral pathogens.
