ABSTRACT

Water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity (EC), and salinity levels are the critical cultivation factors for freshwater aquaculture. This paper proposes a novel wireless multi-sensor system by integrating the temperature, pH, DO, and EC sensors with an ESP 32 Wi-Fi module for monitoring the water quality of freshwater aquaculture, which acquires the sensing data and salinity information directly derived from the EC level. The information of water temperature, pH, DO, EC, and salinity levels was displayed in the ThingSpeak IoT platform and was visualized in a user-friendly manner by ThingView APP. Firstly, these sensors were integrated with an ESP32 Wi-Fi platform. The observations of sensors and the estimated salinity from the EC level were then transmitted by a Wi-Fi network to an on-site Wi-Fi access point (AP). The acquired information was further transmitted to the ThingSpeak IoT and displayed in the form of a web-based monitoring system which can be directly visualized by online browsing or the ThingView APP. Through the complete processes of pre-calibration, in situ measurement, and post-calibration, the results illustrate that the proposed wireless multi-sensor IoT system has sufficient accuracy, reliable confidence, and a good tolerance for monitoring the water quality of freshwater aquaculture.

ABSTRACT

This paper originally proposes a wireless multisensor module with illuminance, temperature, relative humidity (RH) and carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors in an aseptic jar incubator for a solid-state fermentation (SSF) of Cordyceps militaris culture. The light intensity, ambient temperature, RH and CO2 are the critical cultivation factors of C. militaris. First, these sensors are integrated in a multisensor platform which is installed inside a lid and covered with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) membrane of class H14 for sterilization of bacteria and viruses. The observations of sensors are then transmitted by a wireless XBee network where the slave sensor node is fixed at the top of jar lid and the master radio node receives data and uploads to an on-site monitoring node. The acquired information is further transmitted to an iCloud database and displayed in a web-based monitoring system. The results illustrate the proposed wireless multisensor module was validated with sufficient accuracy, reliable confidence and well-tolerance for C. militaris cultivation biotechnology under aseptic conditions.

ABSTRACT

In this article, a content-aware specular reflection suppression scheme was developed based on adaptive image inpainting and neural network for endoscopic images. To decrease the impact of specular reflection on visual quality, the proposed scheme consists of three parts: reflection detection, reflection region classification, and reflection concealment. To automatically locate specular reflection regions, a thresholding algorithm with a morphological dilation operation is employed. To reduce the effect of specular reflection, an adaptive image inpainting algorithm is devised to deal with different reflection regions. To achieve content-aware image inpainting, a reflection region classification algorithm is designed by analyzing the local image content to adjust the parameters in the proposed image inpainting algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can automatically and correctly not only locate but also conceal specular reflection regions in endoscopic images. Furthermore, since the average SSIM (structural similarity index) value of the proposed scheme is higher than those of the existing methods, our specular reflection suppression scheme is superior to the existing methods.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) is a chronic disease that highly degrades the quality of life for patients. In the present study, Internet intervention was used to care for bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis patients to alleviate their pain and bothering symptoms. METHODS: Healthcare education was carried out through the Internet by asking the patients, who were randomly divided into study (40 patients) and control (40 patients) groups, to check possible sensitive foods, habits, and behaviors weekly to remind and consolidate important rules for promoting quality of life. The symptom flares consultation through short message service with the Internet used to elevate healthcare efficiency was undertaken. Questionnaires, including Short Form 36 health survey, O'Leary-Sant symptom and problem indices, as well as visual analog scales pain and urgency scales, were used to evaluate quality of life and disease severity improvements before and after information and communication technology intervention. The outcome was evaluated at week 8. RESULTS: The quality of life of both the control and study groups was significantly improved. The quality of life and visual analog scales for the patients in the study group with information and communication technology intervention showed a much greater improvement compared with the patients in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The E-health system was shown to be effective in improving quality of life of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis patients through intervention of Internet healthcare education and short message service for the consolidation of healthy behavior and lifestyle in the 8-week follow up.
