ABSTRACT

The prevalence of substantial inflammation or fibrosis in treatment-naïve patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and normal alanine transaminase (ALT) levels is high. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 559 consecutive patients with hepatitis B virus infection, who underwent liver biopsy, to investigate the value of noninvasive models based on routine serum markers for evaluating liver histology in CHB patients with normal or mildly elevated ALT levels and to provide treatment guidance. After comparing 55 models, we identified the top three models that exhibited excellent performance. The APGA model, based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), demonstrated a superior ability to evaluate significant (AUROC = 0.750) and advanced fibrosis (AUROC = 0.832) and demonstrated a good performance in assessing liver inflammation (AUROCs = 0.779 and 0.874 for stages G ≥ 2 and G ≥ 3, respectively). APGA also exhibited significant correlations with liver inflammation and fibrosis stage (correlation coefficients, 0.452 and 0.405, respectively (p < 0.001)). When the patients were stratified into groups based on HBeAg status and ALT level, APGA consistently outperformed the other 54 models. The other top two models, GAPI and XIE, also outperformed models based on other chronic hepatitis diseases. APGA may be the most suitable option for detecting liver fibrosis and inflammation in Chinese patients with CHB.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/modified porous starch (MPS) gel beads were prepared through in situ chemical cross-linking by incorporating with MPS, which was obtained by modifying porous starch (PS) with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and glutaraldehyde (GA). Addition of MPS could improve the storage modulus and the effective crosslinking density (ve) of the gel beads, and the mechanical properties were enhanced. The PVA-MPS gel beads were preserved as immobilized microbial carriers for 40 d and reactivated in wastewater. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations showed that the beads were highly porous and conducive for microorganism adhesion. The PVA-MPS gel beads were able to remove 97% of ammonia nitrogen and 80% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) after reactivation under all four preservation conditions. The abundance of Hydrogenophaga as denitrifying bacteria on PVA-MPS gel beads increased, with abundance of 8.44%, 5.55%, 8.90% and 9.48%, respectively. It proved that the carrier provided a partial hypoxic environment for microorganisms.

ABSTRACT

Algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) and bacterial granular sludge (BGS, control group) were operated over 240 days to investigate the role of algae in treating synthetic municipal wastewater. The results showed that algae significantly improved the removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN). The nitrogen removal load of ABGS was 2.6 mg-N/g-VSS/day (22.8 %, light) and 1.1 mg-N/g-VSS/day (9.6 %, dark) higher than that of BGS, respectively, which was attributed to algae enhanced NH3-N removal capacity in the anaerobic stage and increased the utilization efficiency of organics in denitrification. Algae increased the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria, and ABGS (28.83 %) was higher than BGS (14.28 %). Moreover, the dominant phylum of algae was Chlorophyta (98.39 %), the chlorophyll-a was sustained at 1.28 ± 0.26 mg/g-VSS. Algae significantly increased the content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and the increased polysaccharide came from the tightly bound EPS. This study expands the understanding of the role of algae in ABGS.
