ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that aspirin consumption may reduce the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but their correlation is still not fully understood. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the correlation between aspirin consumption and HCC. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases. The search period was from the establishment of the database to July 1, 2022 with no language restrictions. RESULTS: A total of 19 studies including three prospective studies and 16 retrospective ones with 2,217,712 patients were included. Compared with those who did not take aspirin, those who took aspirin had a 30% lower risk of HCC (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.63-0.76, I2 = 84.7%, P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis showed that aspirin significantly reduced the risk of HCC by 19% in Asia (HR = 0.81, 95% CI 0.80-0.82, I2 = 85.2%, P < 0.001) and by 33% (HR = 0.67, 95% CI 0.61-0.73, I2 = 43.6%, P = 0.150) in Europe and the U.S with no significant difference. Moreover, in patients with HBV or HCV infection, aspirin reduced 19% and 24% of the risk of HCC, respectively. However, aspirin administration might increase risks of gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with chronic liver disease (HR = 1.14, 95% CI 0.99-1.31, I2 = 0.0%, P = 0.712). Sensitivity analysis showed no significant difference of results after excluding individual studies, suggesting that the results were robust. CONCLUSION: Aspirin may reduce the risk of HCC in both healthy population and patients with chronic liver disease. However, attention should be paid to adverse events such as gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with chronic liver disease.

ABSTRACT

The spawning grounds are important areas for the survival and reproduction of aquatic organisms and play an important role in the replenishment of fishery resources. The density of fish larvae in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) was analyzed to establish Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) based on marine environmental factors. Survey data and satellite remote sensing data, including sea surface temperature, sea surface salinity and chlorophyll a concentration, from 2014 to 2017 during April-September were analyzed. Results showed that the accuracy of the HSI model based on the larval density and environmental factors was more than 60%, and the distribution trend of HSI was consistent with the distribution trend of larval density. The HSI models constructed based on Arithmetic Mean Model (AMM), Geometric Mean Model (GMM) and Minimum Model (MINM) methods can better predict the spatial-temporal distribution of larvae in the PRE. Among them, the accuracy of the HSI model constructed by the AMM and GMM methods was the highest in April (71%) and September (93%); the accuracy of the HSI model constructed by the MINM method was the highest in June (70%), July (84%) and August (64%). In general, the areas with high HSI values are mainly distributed in the offshore waters of the PRE. The spatial-temporal distribution of larvae in the PRE was influenced by monsoon, Pearl River runoff, Guangdong coastal currents and the invasion of high-salinity seawater from the outer sea.

ABSTRACT

Sustainable utilization of fishery resources is the key for the sustainable development of fisheries, and its evaluation is a critical topic in the management of fisheries. Based on the theories of sustainable utilization, an index system suitable for the evaluation of the sustainable utilization of fishery resources in Guangdong Province was established, and a hierarchy and comprehensive grey evaluation model was adopted to evaluate this sustainable utilization in 1978-2007. In the study period, the utilization level of fishery resources in this province had an overall decrease, being the lowest in 1998, only 37.3% of that in 1978; but in the nearest 10 years, this utilization level had an increasing trend, with that in 2007 being 55.1% of 1978. The results of comprehensive evaluation were consistent with the observed facts, indicating that the model was feasible to evaluate the sustainable utilization of regional fishery resources.
