ABSTRACT

Salt scaling poses a significant obstacle to the practical implementation of solar-driven evaporation for desalination. Attempts to mitigate scaling by enhancing mass transfer often lead to a compromise in evaporation efficiency due to associated heat loss. In the present work, a novel seesaw evaporator with a Janus structure to harness scaling for periodic self-descaling is reported. The seesaw evaporators are facilely fabricated by delignifying balsa wood and subsequently single-sided spray-coating it with soot and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This unique Janus structure enables the evaporator to float on the brine while ensuring an ample supply of solution for evaporation. During evaporation, salt ions are transported directionally toward the cocked end of the evaporator to form scaling, triggering the seesaw evaporator to flip once a threshold is reached. The accumulated salts re-dissolve back into the solution. By adjusting the tilt angle, the evaporator can achieve an impressive evaporation rate of up to 2.65 kg m-2  h-1 when evaporating an 8 wt.% NaCl solution. Remarkably, these evaporators maintain a stable evaporation rate during prolonged 120 h operation and produce ≈3.93-6.35 L m⁻2 ·day⁻¹ of freshwater from simulated brines when assembled into an evaporation device.

ABSTRACT

The spontaneous emulsification for the formation of water-in-oil (W/O) or oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions needs the help of at least one kind of the third component (surfactant or cosolvent) to stabilize the oil-water interface. Herein, with the water/CS2-soluble polymer poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEAM) as a surfactant, the spontaneous formation of water-in-PDEAM/CS2 emulsions is reported for the first time. The strong affinity between PDEAM and water or the increase of PDEAM concentration will accelerate the emulsification process with high dispersed phase content. It is demonstrated that the spontaneous emulsification of condensed water droplets into the PDEAM/CS2 solution occurs during the breath figure process, resulting in porous films with two levels of pore sizes (i.e., micron and submicron). The emulsification degree and the amounts of submicron-sized pores increase with PDEAM concentration and solidifying time of the solution. This work brings about incremental interest in spontaneous emulsification that may happen during the breath figure process. The combination of these two simultaneous processes provides us with an option to build hierarchically porous structures with condensed and emulsified water droplets as templates. Such porous membranes may have great potential in fields such as separation, cell culture, and biosensing.

ABSTRACT

Two new 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromones (1-2), two new sesquiterpenes (12-13), and twelve known compounds (3-11, 14-16) were isolated from agarwood of Aquilaria sinensis. These structures were confirmed by HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra. The absolute configurations of two new sesquiterpenes were determined by comparing the experimental and calculated ECD spectra. Among them, 7,8-dihydroxy-2-[2-(4'-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]chromone (2) was the first time found that the hydroxyl groups at both C-7/C-8 in agarwood. And Aseudesm B (13), the aldehyded methyl group at C-5 of eucalyptane sesquiterpenes was first discovered in natural products. In the bioassays, all compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against lipopolysaccharide-activated nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW264.7 cells. Compounds 2-5, 7, 9-10, and 13-14 revealed notable inhibitory effects against NO production with IC50 values ranging from 4.0 to 13.0 µM.

ABSTRACT

Fluorinated polymers are emerging as important alternatives for isoporous film fabrication by the breath figure technique, originating from the special characteristics endowed by fluorine elements such as low surface energy and good chemical stability. In this work, we design and synthesize polystyrenes (∼3600 Da) with perfluoroalkyl groups (-C3F7 or -C7F15) at both chain ends and hydrophilic oligo(ethylene glycol) units ((C2H4O)n, n = 1/2/3) in the chain middle by taking advantage of the bifunctional atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators and post-substitution of the terminal bromine. We investigate the influence of the two disparate groups on the physical characteristics of the polymers and self-assembly behaviors during the dynamic breath figure process. It shows that the elongation of hydrophilic segments can greatly decrease the interfacial tension between the polymer solution and water (from 41.8 to 37.4 mN m-1), and the functionalization with perfluoroalkyl end groups diminishes the ability of the polymers to precipitate at the interface, as demonstrated by the cloud point results. Studies of the morphology of the porous films suggest that both low interfacial tension and strong capability of interfacial precipitation are beneficial to droplet stabilization and honeycomb pattern formation at low solution concentrations.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: People with multiple sclerosis (MS) may be disproportionally impacted by the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) as various factors important to their functioning and quality of life are at-risk and/or compromised during the pandemic. In particular, the social distancing and quarantine practice during the pandemic maybe detrimental to MS patients' social and emotional health. Compared with the general population, MS patients may be under increased social strain and suffer worse health consequences from social isolation. To date, there has been no research examining the social consequences of the pandemic on MS patients' emotional and social health. METHODS: This is a retrospective longitudinal study of 266 adults with MS who were followed at a large academic medical center in the Midwest. Each participant completed monthly surveys including depression, anxiety, and social health variables. RESULTS: T-Tests shows worse anxiety (95% CI [-5.03, -3.05]; p-value < 0.001), worse depression (95% CI [-2.67, -1.03]; p-value < 0.001), and worse satisfaction with social roles (95% CI [2.37, 3.95]; p-value < 0.001) since the COVID-19 outbreak (March 2020). Social isolation is associated with worse anxiety (95% CI [-8.98, -4.58]; p-value < 0.001) and depression (95% CI [-6.88, -3.24]; p-value < 0.001). However, individuals who had in-person visits before and after the outbreak did not experience any changes in anxiety, depression, or social health. CONCLUSION: MS patients' anxiety, depression, and social participation worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social isolation is found to be associated with worse anxiety and depression. However, those who attended in-person visits for their MS treatment did not experience negative changes in their emotional or social health. This study highlights the importance of healthcare provider's alertness to MS patients' social health and the interplay between social and emotional health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Immobilization of metal nanoparticles (NPs) on flexible substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has received great attention. Anchoring NPs on substrates generally involves the process of surface modification, thanks to its simple, universal, and nondestructive features. 2-Hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (HNQ), a plant-derived compound used to dye hairs and nails, may interact with polyamine or metal ions to form a surface coating. Here, we report the formation of amino-quinone coatings via the co-deposition of HNQ and polyethyleneimine, which provides a functionalized platform to rapidly immobilize Ag NPs on substrates such as a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) film to fabricate Ag-PDMS substrates for SERS detection. The detection concentrations are down to 10-8 M for rhodamine 6G. This work expands the system of surface co-deposition and further provides a facile route to prepare a highly efficient SERS substrate.

ABSTRACT

Acceptance of illness is related to better mental health among patients with chronic illness; however, this construct has not been evaluated as part of routine transplantation evaluations. The purpose of this study was to create a brief measure of acceptance of illness for patients pursuing organ transplantation and examine how acceptance is related to distress. Retrospective medical record reviews were conducted for 290 patients who completed a routine psychosocial evaluation prior to transplant listing which included the Illness Acceptance Scale (IAS). Internal consistency for the IAS was excellent (Cronbach's alpha = .92). Illness acceptance was negatively correlated with depression, anxiety, and catastrophizing and was not related to health literacy or health numeracy. The IAS is a reliable and valid measure for patients who are pursuing thoracic transplant or left ventricular assist device. Clinicians may want to screen transplant candidates for illness acceptance and refer those with lower levels to psychological interventions.

ABSTRACT

@#Abstract: Objective To understand the distribution and drug resistance of common pathogens of fungal bloodstream infection in Sichuan, and to provide reference for clinicians to empirically treat fungal bloodstream infection. Methods From November 1, 2019 to December 31, 2020, fungal strains isolated from blood culture of patients diagnosed with bloodstream infection in 19 tertiary first-class general hospitals in Sichuan Province were collected for mass spectrometry identification and drug susceptibility, and the results were statistically analyzed, along with a retrospective analysis of clinical data. Results A total of 255 fungal strains were received and identified by mass spectrometry, 215 strains of Candida spp (84.3%), 28 strains of Cryptococcus neoformans (11.0%), 4 strains of Talaromyces marneffei (1.6%) and 8 strains of others (3.1%). Among the Candida spp 90 strains of Candida albicans, 39 strains of Candida parapsilosis complex, 36 strains of Candida glabrata, 33 strains of Candida tropicalis, 8 strains of Candida guilliermondii, and 9 strains of other Candida. In the department, the ICU was predominant, accounting for 35.7%. The top four Candida (Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis complex, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis) were analyzed for drug sensitivity, Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis complex group were more sensitive to antifungal drugs, the sensitivity rates of Candida albicans to fluconazole, voriconazole, anidulafungin, caspofungin, micarafungin were 89.2%, 92.8%, 97.6%, 97.6%, 96.4%, respectively. The sensitivity rates of Candida parapsilosis to fluconazole and voriconazole were 89.7% and 94.9%, and to anidulafungin, caspofungin and micafungin were all 100%. Echinocandins had stronger antibacterial activity against Candida spp., Candida parapsilosis complex and Candida tropicalis had 100% sensitivity to echinocandins, Candida albicans had more than 95% sensitivity to echinocandins, and Candida glabrata had about 90% sensitivity to echinocandins. Candida tropicalis was less sensitive to fluconazole and voriconazole with 66.7% and 54.5%, and the sensitivity of Candida glabrata to fluconazole was mainly concentrated in susceptible dose dependent (SDD), accounting for 91.4%. The four Candida species did not show resistance to amphotericin B, all of them showed wild-type strains, Candida tropicalis showed the highest non-wild-type rate to posaconazole and itraconazole with 21.2% and 36.4%, and the drug sensitivity results of Cryptococcus neoformans showed that 4 out of 23 strains showed resistance to amphotericin B (non-wild-type) and 3 strains showed resistance to fluconazole (non-wild-type). Conclusions The fungus of bloodstream infection is mainly Candida spp.. Among of them, Candida albicans accounts for the highest percentage, echinocandins have good antibacterial effect on Candida, Candida is sensitive to amphotericin B as wild type, but Candida tropicalis has slightly higher resistance rate to fluconazole and voriconazole, and the non-wild type rate of Cryptococcus neoformans to amphotericin B is increasing, and clinicians should pay high attention to the rational use of antifungal drugs.

ABSTRACT

The present study extended prior work on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20). The TAS-20 total scale score is commonly used in research in the psychology of men and masculinities and in clinical practice, but most published confirmatory factor analyses (CFA's) do not support this use. Using a sample of 913 men and women, variance composition was assessed, and model-based dimensionality and reliability coefficients were calculated, finding evidence for unidimensionality, which supports the use of the total scale raw score but not that of the subscales, although the model fit was less than desired. Convergent and concurrent evidence was found for the validity of the TAS-20 in men as a unidimensional scale (N = 505) by examining relationships with latent variables of several constructs in the nomological network. An assessment of measurement invariance by gender (men, women) found evidence for metric invariance, indicating that cisgender men and women understand the scale in the same way. It is recommended that the TAS-20 scale developers follow recommended procedures to trim composite measurement scales to improve the psychometric properties (i.e., model fit) of the TAS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of Rh phenotype, irregular antibodies screenting and postpartum follow-up of RhD- pregnant women in Xiamen. METHODS: The samples of 313 RhD- pregnant women from June 2018 to May 2020 were collected. Rh serotype phenotypes were identified by tube physiological saline method, irregular antibodies were screened and confirmed by DiaMed Low ion indirect anti-human gel card. By recording the medical, the pregnant women production process and the occurrence of HDN were investigated. RESULTS: The Rh serological phenotypes of 313 RhD- pregnant women were ccdee 180 cases (57.51%), Ccdee 97 cases (30.99%), ccdEe 10 cases(3.19%), CCdee 21 cases (6.71%), CcdEe 5 cases (1.60%), the ccdee and ccdee were the most common in the serological phenotype. Eleven irregular antibodies were detected in 313 RhD- pregnant women, accounting for 351% of the total. There were 8 cases of anti-D antibody, 1 case of anti-E antibody, and 2 cases of anti-D combined with anti-C antibody. The medical records of 21 RhD- pregnant women were reviewed, 19 cases of RhD+ and 2 RhD- newborns were successfully delivered, in which 2 cases developed RhD-HDN, 1 case developed RHE-HDN, and the remaining 18 cases did not develop HDN. CONCLUSION: The Rh serological phenotype of RhD- pregnant women in Xiamen area is mainly for ccdee. Maternal history and blood transfusion history are the main causes of irregular RhD- pregnant antibodies. It is recommended that serological phenotype combined with irregular antibody screening should be applied for RhD- pregnant women in clinic, to reduce the risk of RhD-HDN and ensure the safety of RhD- blood transfusion.

ABSTRACT

Raman multivariate curve resolution (Raman-MCR) is applied to examine how the hydration shell around poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEAM) changes upon heating, in comparison with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), both of which undergo a clouding transition near room temperature. We report that PDEAM possesses a less-ordered and smaller hydration shell than PNIPAM. Furthermore, the PDEAM hydration-shell structure is insensitive to the occurrence of clouding, indicating the coil-globule transition and aggregation of multiple chains can be achieved without the hydration-shell structural transformation.

ABSTRACT

Mussel-inspired surface modification has received significant interest in recent years because of its simplicity and versatility. The deposition systems are still mainly limited to molecules with catechol chemical structures. In this paper, we report a novel deposition system based on a monophenol, vanillic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid), to fabricate metal-phenolic network coatings on various substrates. The results of the water contact angle and zeta potential reveal that the modified polypropylene microfiltration membrane is underwater superhydrophobic and positively charged, showing applications in oil/water separation and dye removal. Furthermore, the single-face modified Janus membrane is promising in switchable oil/water separation. The results demonstrate a novel example of the metal-monophenolic deposition system, which expands the toolbox of surface coatings and facilitates the understanding of the deposition of phenols.

ABSTRACT

Engineering coatings with precise physicochemical properties allows for control over the interface of a material and its interactions with the surrounding environment. However, assembling coatings with well-defined properties on different material classes remains a challenge. Herein, we report a co-assembly strategy to precisely control the structure and properties (e.g., thickness, adhesion, wettability, and zeta potential) of coatings on various materials (27 substrates examined) using quinone and polyamine building blocks. By increasing the length of the amine building blocks from small molecule diamines to branched amine polymers, we tune the properties of the films, including the thickness (from ca. 5 to ca. 50 nm), interfacial adhesion (0.05 to 5.54 nN), water contact angle (130 to 40°), and zeta potential (-42 to 28 mV). The films can be post-functionalized through the in situ formation of diverse nanostructures, including nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanocrystals. Our approach provides a platform for the rational design of engineered, substrate-independent coatings for various applications.

ABSTRACT

Porous materials have attracted great interest in recent years, and a variety of surface modification methods have been developed to endow porous materials with multifunctional applications. Herein, multifunctional porous materials are fabricated based on surface metallization. Metallized sponges with Ag and Cu are highly hydrophobic and are still hydrophobic under oil. The metallized sponges selectively adsorb oils from oil/water mixtures and can completely remove oils from water. We further demonstrate continuous oil-water separation by the metallized sponges with the aid of a peristaltic pump. The Ag-metallized materials show high catalytic performance for both chemical reduction and dye degradation. The catalytic reduction efficiency of 4-nitrophenol reaches 97.7% within 60 min and remains as high as 96% after 15 cycles. Moreover, the metallized materials show 99.99% bactericidal efficiency for both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Particularly, the Cu-metallized materials exhibit stable conductivity under deformation; and metal patterns are realized via the metallization method combined with a patterned mask, which may provide a feasible approach for flexible electronics. This work provides a versatile method to introduce metal coatings to porous materials, broadening the applications of porous materials.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare the hepatoprotective effects of Oxy (oxyresveratrol), Res (resveratrol), and MulA (mulberroside A) (80 mg/kg body weight/d, i.g.) on acute liver injury (ALI) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS)/d-galactosamine (d-GalN) in mice. After 7 h of LPS (50 µg/kg body weight, i.p.) and d-GalN (500 mg/kg body weight, i.p.) exposure, the activities of serum transaminases and antioxidant enzymes were determined. The expressions of the Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)-nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signal pathway, the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signal pathway, and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal pathway related proteins were evaluated by Western blot assays. Histopathological analysis was performed by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining on the separated livers of mice. The results showed that treatment with Oxy, Res, and MulA could significantly decreases the levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) ( P < 0.01). MulA was the most effective ingredient among the three, and the ALT and AST levels were reduced at 90.3 ± 1.3% and 93.9 ± 1.1% compared with the LPS/D-GalN treated group ( P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the stilbenes curbed the expression of inflammatory factors, NF-κB pathway activation, and MAPKs phosphorylation and upregulated antioxidant enzymes, Nrf2, NAD (P) H:quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression levels. Stilbenes might protect the ALI caused by LPS/d-GalN through inhibiting the negative effectiveness of oxidation stress and inflammation. The protective performance of MulA was better than those of Oxy and Res, and we hypothesize that it might be due to the mediation of the specific metabolic pathway of the MulA in vivo. All of these results implied that stilbenes in mulberry twigs might be promising as natural additives.

ABSTRACT

Deposition of dopamine and tannic acid has received great attention in the fields of surface and interface science and technology. The deposition behaviors of various metal-phenolic systems have been investigated, and it is generally accepted that at least one catechol group is essential to the formation of the coatings. Herein, we report a novel and effective surface-coating system based on the coordination complexes of FeIII ions with a natural product juglone that contains only one phenolic hydroxyl. We investigated the deposition behaviors of this novel system on various substrates. Microporous polypropylene membrane modified with juglone/FeIII coatings is superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic, showing high separation efficiency and good reusability for various oil/water emulsions. In addition, the modified membrane can adsorb anionic dyes and selectively remove them from dye mixtures with high efficiency. We further demonstrated that the coating is a result of the synergetic effect of juglone/FeIII coordination and FeIII hydrolysis. This work not only provides new insights into surface deposition systems but also expands the polyphenol family for surface coatings of multifunctional materials.
