ABSTRACT

A lateral approach to the shoulder joint via a longitudinal myotomy of the supraspinatus muscle was used in the surgical treatment of four cases involving avulsion fractures of the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula. This approach was developed using cadaver specimens and was compared to previously reported approaches to the supraglenoid tubercle. This approach gave excellent, visualized exposure and permitted accurate reduction and fixation for this type of fracture. Excellent results were achieved in four clinical cases.

ABSTRACT

Dorsal laminectomy was used to treat 30 dogs with cervical intervertebral disk disease. A variety of breeds were represented, and all animals weighted 15 kg or less. Myelography was utilized to locate each solitary disk herniation. All 30 cases progressed to complete recovery which indicates that dorsal laminectomy may be performed with success in small dogs with intervertebral disk disease.

ABSTRACT

Degenerative joint disease as a sequela to pathology of the coxofemoral joint can cause considerable pain. In dogs weighing less than 20 km, excision of the femoral head and neck is sufficient to control this pain. A pseudoarthrosis functions effectively as a salvage hip joint. In dogs weighing more than 20 km, additional surgery is required to ensure painfree use of the hip. Postoperatively, the weight of these larger animals appears to cause striking of the proximally excised femoral shaft with the pelvis during exercise. This contact causes pain that limits the use of the joint. The inclusion of a biceps femoris muscle sling to prevent this striking and the resultant pain is outlined.

ABSTRACT

Three dogs were found to have calcified flexor tendons attached to the medial humeral epicondyle. There were 2 types of calcification: one was associated with elbow dysplasia, and a second resulted from traumatic separation of a portion of the medial humeral epicondyle.

ABSTRACT

An abnormality of the coxofemoral joint is recognized when the articular cartilage sliding interface between the femoral head and the acetabulum is interrupted. The article considers the pathologic conditions that may affect the normal coxofemoral articulation and are responsive to excision arthroplasty. Techniques of excision arthroplasty and the biceps femoris muscle sling technique are described.

ABSTRACT

Five cases of coagulopathy caused by consumption of indanedione (diphacinone)-based rodenticides are reported. In each case, acute onset of lethargy and respiratory distress were the predominant initial clinical signs. Thoracic radiography revealed pulmonary edema, pleural effusion, and/or pericardial effusion as consistent findings. Laboratory evaluations confirmed coagulopathies that responded to vitamin K1 therapy.

ABSTRACT

Everyone seems to agree that we should be concerned with the economic security of all small businesses, and in particular, the clients whom we serve. Businesses and consumers are equally concerned and occasionally scared. Both are cautious when spending hard-earned dollars. Animal care, which is not a routine budgetary expenditure, is often difficult for a family to fund. As a servicing veterinarian with a product to sell one must be cognizant of these economic dilemmas to understand your consumer. Your product must fit your consumers' needs and ability to pay, and you should not try to mold your clients to your needs. This current recession will close some veterinary practices. Those practices with high fixed overheads, overextended borrowing, too many leases, declining income, and poor management will suffer the most.
