ABSTRACT

This is the first reported fatal case of cytomegalic inclusion disease in a pregnant woman. The 28-year-old woman died after cesarean section for cephalopelvic disproportion. The diagnosis of cytomegalic inclusion disease was made at autopsy by finding enlarged pneumocytes with typical intranuclear inclusions, positive direct immunofluorescence on the lung tissue with antibody specific for cytomegalovirus, and retrospective serologic titers of 1:64 for the virus. The time of the infection is unclear, but the absence of infection in the newborn may suggest an onset late in pregnancy; there was no evidence of disease before labor and cesarean section.

ABSTRACT

A 46-year-old woman was seen with biliary obstruction secondary to a pancreatic tumor. After undergoing a percutaneous liver biopsy, she became septic and went into shock. Haemophilus influenzae type be bacteremia and biliary infection were verified. With treatment, the patient recovered from the infection. Biliary infection by H influenzae is rare, and fulminant infections in adults are even more uncommon. Hazards of invasive diagnostic procedures in patients with obstructive jaundice are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Sodium thiopental was administered to 10 dogs following embolization of the middle cerebral artery. Its effect on the "grace period" for revascularization was investigated by performing embolectomies 6 hours later. We observed a striking reduction in the size of infarction in the animals treated with thiopental at moderate and prolonged dosage levels. The control animals treated with pentobarbital received less protection against ischemia although blood levels were similar to those of the experimental groups during the period of vascular occlusion.

ABSTRACT

Salt used for deicing the streets near Rochester, New York, has increased the chloride concentration in Irondequoit Bay at least fivefold during the past two decades. During the winter of 1969-70 the quantity and salinity of the dense runoff that accumulated on the bottom of the bay was sufficient to prevent complete vertical mixing of the bay during the spring. Comparison with 1939 conditions indicates that the period of summer stratification has been prolonged a month by the density gradient imposed by the salt runoff.
