ABSTRACT

AIMS: Blood pressure variability (BPV) was associated with the clinical outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to large-vessel occlusion (LVO) after endovascular treatment (EVT). This study aimed to investigate whether the use of antihypertensive drugs could affect this association in patients with AIS-LVO after EVT. METHODS: We retrospectively screened consecutive patients with AIS-LVO who had successful recanalization after EVT and calculated their systolic BPV (SBPV) during the first 24 h after EVT using eight statistical methodologies based on previously published literature. Poor outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale score of 3-6 at 90 days. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess this association, and different prediction models were constructed to assess the effect of the use of antihypertensive drugs. RESULTS: A total of 214 patients were finally included, including 92 (43.0%) with good outcomes, and 136 (63.6%) who received antihypertensive drugs. SBPV indicators were significantly lower in patients with good outcomes versus those with poor outcomes. The logistic analysis showed that all SBPV indicators were consistently associated with poor outcomes (odds ratio, 1.031-1.282, all P<0.05) in all populations, which was confirmed in patients not using antihypertensive drugs. However, no SBPV indicator was found to be associated with poor outcomes in patients using antihypertensive drugs. Receiver operating characteristic curves showed that the area under the curve (AUC) was larger in the model adjusting for antihypertensive drugs (AUC 0.774-0.783) compared with the one not adjusted for antihypertensive drugs (AUC 0.739-0.754). CONCLUSION: In the anterior circulation of patients with AIS-LVO who had successful recanalization after EVT, the utilization of antihypertensive drugs may have some impact on the relationship between SBPV and clinical outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Background and purpose: Blood pressure is associated with outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients receiving intravenous alteplase. The study aimed to explore the effect of sex and age on their association. Methods: Based on a prospective cohort, we retrospectively enrolled consecutive AIS patients who received intravenous alteplase and had complete blood pressure data, including baseline systolic blood pressure (SBP 01), SBP at 1 h (SBP 02), and SBP at 24 h (SBP 03) after alteplase. Maximum SBP (SBP max), minimum SBP (SBP min), and mean SBP (SBP mean) were calculated. Poor outcome was defined as having a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 2-6 at 90 days. We explored the effect of age and sex on the association of different SBP indicators with the 3-month outcomes. Results: A total of 1,593 eligible patients were included in the present study. All SBP indicators were found to be higher in patients with poor vs. good outcomes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that all SBP indicators except baseline SBP were associated with poor outcomes with good prediction powers (AUC, 0.762-0.766). More SBP indicators (SBP 02, SBP 03, SBP min, and SBP mean) were associated with poor outcomes in women vs. men, while all SBP indicators after alteplase were associated with poor outcomes in patients aged ≥ 60 years, but none was seen in patients aged < 60 years. Furthermore, all SBP indicators after alteplase were associated with poor outcomes in women aged ≥ 60 years, while only SBP 03 in men aged < 60 years. Conclusion: Among Chinese stroke patients treated with intravenous alteplase, SBP after alteplase was associated with clinical outcomes, which were affected by age and sex.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the association of intracranial non-stenotic atherosclerotic plaque with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) imaging markers in a CSVD population using 3.0 T high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HRMRI), which was validated in embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) cohort. We retrospectively recruited consecutive patients who were diagnosed with CSVD or ESUS from January 2015 to December 2019. All patients underwent intracranial HRMRI to assess intracranial non-stenotic atherosclerotic plaques. Baseline and imaging data were collected and were measured among all patients. Among 153 patients with CSVD, there were 59 with intracranial atherosclerotic plaque (IAP) and 94 with non-IAP, including 36 with intracranial atherosclerotic complicated plaque (IACP). Among 227 ESUS patients, there were 155 with IAP and 72 with non-IAP, including 127 with IACP. In the CSVD population, we found that: (1) CSVD burden was associated with IAP (p = 0.036) and IACP (p = 0.008); (2) IAP was associated with white matter hyperintensity (51% vs. 34%; P = 0.039), and IACP was associated with lacunes (69% vs. 35%; P = 0.009) and enlarge perivascular space (69% vs. 39%; P = 0.022). A similar association of CSVD imaging markers with IAP or IACP was found in the ESUS population. Furthermore, the association of unilateral IAP or IACP with CSVD imaging markers of ipsilateral hemisphere was identified in the two cohorts. This is the first report that intracranial non-stenotic atherosclerotic plaque, especially complicated plaque, is closely associated with CSVD imaging markers, which provide further evidence for the association of large artery atherosclerosis with CSVD.

ABSTRACT

Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) causes porcine pleuropneumonia, a disease responsible for substantial losses in the worldwide pig industry. In this study, outbred Kunming (KM) and Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice were evaluated as alternative mice models for APP research. After intranasal infection of serotype 5 reference strain L20, there was less lung damage and a lower clinical sign score in ICR compared to KM mice. However, ICR mice showed more obvious changes in body weight loss, the amount of immune cells (such as neutrophils and lymphocytes) and cytokines (such as IL-6, IL-1ß and TNF-α) in blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). The immunological changes observed in ICR mice closely mimicked those found in piglets infected with L20. While both ICR and KM mice are susceptible to APP and induce pathological lesions, we suggest that ICR and KM mice are more suitable for immunological and pathogenesis studies, respectively. The research lays the theoretical basis for determine that mice could replace pigs as the APP infection model and it is of significance for the study of APP infection in the laboratory.

ABSTRACT

A series of poly (arylene ether ketone sulfone) s containing different amino content (Am-PAEKS) were prepared via direct polycondensation reactions, and then the sulfobutyl groups were grafted onto the Am-PAEKS by amidating reaction between the amide groups in Am-PAEKS and carboxylic acid groups in 4-(N-butane sulfonic) aminobenzoic acid. The structures of the compounds and the polymer were confirmed by FTIR and H-NMR. The new characteristic bands at 1 239 and 1 060 cm(-1) were assigned to O=S=O symmetric stretching vibration and asymmetric stretching vibration of the sulfonic groups in sulfonated poly (arylene ether ketone sulfone) on side chain (S-SPAEKS), and the structures of the polymers were further confirmed by 1H NMR spectra, and the proton peak at 1.64 ppm was assigned to the methyl in the middle of the pendant sulfonated aliphatic side chains, which show that the S-SPAEKS had been prepared successfully. In TGA curves we can observe two distinct weight loss steps, the first step was mainly attributed to the splitting-off of the sulfonic acid groups at 300 degrees C, and the second step was mainly attributed to the decomposition of the main chain of the S-SPAEKS at 450 degrees C. This series of SSPAEKS polymers exhibit excellent thermal properties by thermo gravimetric analysis, which can satisfy the basic requirements of proton exchange membrane (PEM) for fuel cells.
