ABSTRACT

Photoredox catalysis plays a crucial role in contemporary synthetic organic chemistry. Since the groundbreaking work of Shang and Fu on photocatalytic decarboxylative alkylations in 2019, a wide range of organic transformations, such as alkylation, alkenylation, cyclization, amination, iodination, and monofluoromethylation, have been progressively achieved using a combination of iodide and PPh3. In this review, we primarily focus on summarizing the recent advancements in inexpensive and readily available iodide/phosphine-mediated photoredox radical transformations.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To understand the placebo response of acupuncture and its effect on migraine and optimize the design of future acupuncture clinical trials on migraine treatment. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials with sham acupuncture as a control in migraine treatment were searched in four English databases from inception to September 1, 2022. The primary outcome was placebo response rate. Secondary outcomes were migraine symptoms, emotional condition, and quality of life. Factors associated with placebo response were also explored. Results were combined using risk difference (RD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) with a random effects model. RESULTS: The final analysis included 21 studies involving 1177 patients. The pooled response rate of sham acupuncture was 0.34 (RD, 95% CI 0.23-0.45, I2 89.8%). The results (SMD [95% CI]) showed significant improvements in migraine symptoms (pain intensity -0.56 [-0.73 to -0.38], and episode conditions -0.55 [-0.75 to -0.35]); emotional condition (anxiety scale -0.49 [-0.90 to -0.08] and depression scale -0.21 [-0.40 to -0.03]); and quality of life on the Migraine-Specific Quality-of-Life Questionnaire (restrictive 0.78 [0.61-0.95]; preventive 0.52 [0.35-0.68]; and emotional 0.45 [0.28-0.62]) and on the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form (physical 0.48 [0.34-0.62] and mental 0.21 [0.02-0.41]). Only acupuncture treatment frequency had a significant impact on the placebo response rate (RD 0.49 vs. 0.14; p = 0.00). CONCLUSIONS: The effect sizes for placebo response of sham acupuncture varied across migraine treatment trials. Further studies should routinely consider adjusting for a more complete set of treatment factors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent and debilitating condition that poses a significant burden on healthcare systems. Acupuncture has been proposed as a promising intervention for LBP, but the evidence supporting its specific effect is insufficient, and the use of sham acupuncture as a control in clinical trials presents challenges due to variations in sham acupuncture techniques and the magnitude of the placebo effect. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the magnitude of the placebo response of sham acupuncture in trials of acupuncture for nonspecific LBP, and to assess whether different types of sham acupuncture are associated with different responses. METHODS: Four databases including PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library were searched through April 15, 2023, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included if they randomized patients with LBP to receive acupuncture or sham acupuncture intervention. The main outcomes included the placebo response in pain intensity, back-specific function and quality of life. Placebo response was defined as the change in these outcome measures from baseline to the end of treatment. Random-effects models were used to synthesize the results, standardized mean differences (SMDs, Hedges'g) were applied to estimate the effect size. RESULTS: A total of 18 RCTs with 3,321 patients were included. Sham acupuncture showed a noteworthy pooled placebo response in pain intensity in patients with LBP [SMD -1.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) -1.95 to -0.91, I2=89%]. A significant placebo response was also shown in back-specific functional status (SMD -0.49, 95% CI -0.70 to -0.29, I2=73%), but not in quality of life (SMD 0.34, 95% CI -0.20 to 0.88, I2=84%). Trials in which the sham acupuncture penetrated the skin or performed with regular needles had a significantly higher placebo response in pain intensity reduction, but other factors such as the location of sham acupuncture did not have a significant impact on the placebo response. CONCLUSIONS: Sham acupuncture is associated with a large placebo response in pain intensity among patients with LBP. Researchers should also be aware that the types of sham acupuncture applied may potentially impact the evaluation of the efficacy of acupuncture. Nonetheless, considering the nature of placebo response, the effect of other contextual factors cannot be ruled out in this study. (PROSPERO registration No. CRD42022304416).

BACKGROUND: Sham acupuncture is usually used to assess the specific effects of acupuncture. However, the reporting quality of sham acupuncture remains unclear despite its critical importance in understanding and analyzing the effects of acupuncture. This paper presents a literature review aimed at assessing the quality of reporting of sham acupuncture in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) based on STRICTA 2010 and TIDieR-Placebo. METHODS: Three electronic English-language databases (PubMed, MEDLINE and Embase) were searched from inception to March 7, 2022, and RCTs of sham acupuncture were identified. The reporting quality of sham acupuncture was assessed in accordance with the items recommended in STRICTA 2010 and TIDieR-Placebo. The reporting quality of other items related to sham acupuncture apart from items from these two checklists was also captured to further assess the reporting quality of sham acupuncture. RESULTS: A total of 609 eligible studies were included. For all of the items recommended in STRICTA 2010 and TIDieR-Placebo, 100% of the studies reported a brief name that described the sham acupuncture, 93.9% studies reported the needle type, and 90.0% reported the names of the points used. Other items for which the reporting rates were above 50% included the number, frequency and duration of treatment sessions; needle retention time; and number of needle insertions per subject per session. Overall, 49.4% of the studies revealed the rationale why sham acupuncture was chosen, 39.7% of the studies involving insertion processes reported the depth of insertion, and 37.9% of the studies reported the needle manufacturer. Other items for which the reporting rates were below 30% included practitioner-related information, response sought, evaluation of blinding, intervention mode and environment, assisting tools, and the extent to which the treatment was varied. The items "Modifications", "How well (planned)" and "How well (actual)" were not reported in any of the analyzed studies. CONCLUSIONS: The overall reporting quality of sham acupuncture in RCTs was suboptimal. Although STRICTA 2010 and TIDieR-Placebo could be beneficial for describing sham acupuncture, neither can offer recommendations specifically for sham acupuncture. There is thus an urgent need to develop specialized guidelines for reporting sham acupuncture in clinical trials.

ABSTRACT

Triazene is one of the most versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. Generally, it is viewed as a safe equivalent of diazonium salt, thus immediately finding numerous applications in preparative chemistry and medicinal chemistry. Besides, it can be used as a removable directing group in C-H functionalization or play a smart role as a precursor for aryl cation/radical generation. In this review, we will highlight recent noteworthy developments in this field.

ABSTRACT

Barley stripe rust is a relatively new disease in the United States. The pathogen, Puccinia striiformis f. sp. hordei (Psh), was first observed in Texas in 1991 and has spread north and westwards and mainly caused epidemics in the western United States. A total of 447 isolates collected from 1993 to 2017 were identified as 382 multilocus genotypes (MLGs) using 14 simple sequence repeat markers. The MLGs were clustered into six molecular groups (MGs) using the discriminant analysis of principal components and the hierarchical cluster analysis, and the MGs had significant differences in frequency in different years. MG1 was present in the population prior to the year 2000. MG2, MG3, and MG4 became predominate after 2000. MG5 was detected in all 24 years but more frequent from 2010 to 2017. MG6 was the most recent group detected mainly from 2011 to 2017 and had the highest correlation coefficient with the virulence phenotypes among the MGs. The heterozygosity and genotypic diversity of the Psh populations increased from 2000 to 2017, even more from 2010 to 2017. The results indicate rapid genetic changes from year to year, with major molecular group changes around 2000 and 2010. The possible mechanisms underlying the population changes are discussed.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the prevalence of sensory integration disorders in children in urban areas has increased. Most existing sensory integration treatments are located in hospital-based sensory integration units; however, medical resources are extremely limited, making it difficult to guarantee the appropriate treatment time and intervention results for many children. The concept of sensory integration therapy must be disseminated widely and correctly to meet these children's needs. Although most urban communities have a high number of children's spaces, these spaces require improvement. This study proposes the incorporation of the concept of sensory integration therapy into neighborhood open spaces for children to positively impact children's sensory development. The purpose of this study is to determine the effective facility factors of an occupational therapy room, translate them into a community facility design, clarify the categories and relative importance of each design attribute, and explore the design strategies of the children's facilities in neighborhood open spaces based on the sensory integration theory. This study investigates the importance of the sensory integration treatment level. The facilities in neighborhood open spaces for children can be considered systemic structures consisting of five partitioned units with different levels of importance among the synergistic components within each unit. These structures will enable children to experience sensory stimulation during daily outdoor play and will serve as preventive and therapeutic tools.

ABSTRACT

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, is a devastating disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum) in the United States. The fungal pathogen can rapidly evolve, producing new virulent races infecting previously resistant cultivars and genotypes adapting to different environments. The objective of this study was to investigate the long-term population dynamics of P. striiformis f. sp. tritici in the United States. Through genotyping 1,083 isolates taken from 1968 to 2009, using 14 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and 92 secreted protein single nucleotide polymorphism (SP-SNP) markers, 614 and 945 genotypes were detected, respectively. In general, the two types of markers produced consistent genetic relationships among the P. striiformis f. sp. tritici populations over the 40-year period. The prior-to-2000 and the 2000-to-2009 populations were significantly different, with the latter showing higher genotypic diversity and higher heterozygosity than the earlier populations. Clustering analyses using genotypes of either SSR or SP-SNP markers revealed three molecular groups (MGs), MG1, MG2, and MG3. The prior-to-2000 and the 2000-to-2009 groups both had evidence of MG1 and MG2; however, MG3 was only found in the 2000-to-2009 population. Some of the isolates in the period of 2000 to 2009 formed individual clusters, suggesting exotic incursions. Other isolates of the same period were clustered with prior-to-2000 isolates, indicating that they were developed from the previously established populations. The data suggest the coexistence of newly introduced populations alongside established populations in the United States. Twenty SP-SNP markers were significantly associated to individual avirulence genes. These results are useful for developing more accurate monitoring systems and provide guidance for disease management.

ABSTRACT

Stripe (yellow) rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, is a serious disease of wheat in the world. The obligate biotrophic fungal pathogen changes its virulence rapidly, which can circumvent resistance in wheat cultivars and cause severe epidemics. Because P. striiformis f. sp. tritici races have been identified in the United States using different wheat genotypes in different time periods, it is difficult to make direct comparisons of the current population with historical populations. The objective of this study was to characterize historical populations with 18 Yr single-gene lines that are currently used to differentiate P. striiformis f. sp. tritici races in order to understand virulence and race changes of the pathogen over 40 years in the United States. From 908 P. striiformis f. sp. tritici isolates collected from 1968 to 2009 in the United States, 171 races were identified and their frequencies were determined. More races, more new races, and races with more virulence genes were detected since the year 2000 than prior to 2000. None of the races were virulent to Yr5 and Yr15, indicating that these genes have been effective since the late 1960s. Virulence genes to the remaining 16 Yr genes were detected in different periods, and most of them increased in frequency over time. Some virulence genes such as those to Yr17, Yr27, Yr32, Yr43, Yr44, YrTr1, and YrExp2 appeared 14 to 37 years earlier than previously reported, indicating the greater value of using Yr single-gene lines as differentials. Positive and negative associations were detected between virulence genes. The continual information on virulence and races in the P. striiformis f. sp. tritici populations is useful for understanding the evolution of the pathogen and for breeding wheat cultivars with effective resistance to stripe rust.
