ABSTRACT

Sepsis, a systemic inflammatory response triggered by infection, has a considerably high mortality rate. However, effective prevention and intervention measures against sepsis remain insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying the protective properties of immune response gene-1 (IRG1) and 4-Octyl itaconate (OI) during acute liver damage in mice with sepsis. A sepsis mouse model was established to compare wild-type and IRG1-/- groups. The impact of IRG1/Itaconate on pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines was evaluated using J774A.1 cells. IRG1/Itaconate substantially reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines and increased the release of anti-inflammatory cytokines. It reduced pathological damage to liver tissues, preserved normal liver function, decreased the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and LDH, and enhanced the GSH/GSSG ratio. Moreover, IRG1 and itaconic acid activated the Nrf2 signaling pathway, regulating the expression of its downstream antioxidative stress-related proteins. Additionally, they inhibited the activity of NLRP3 inflammatory vesicles to suppress the expression of macrophage-associated pyroptosis signaling molecules. Our findings demonstrate that IRG1/OI inhibits NLRP3 inflammatory vesicle activation and macrophage pyroptosis by modulating the Nrf2 signaling pathway, thereby attenuating acute liver injury in mice with sepsis. These findings could facilitate the clinical application of IRG1/Itaconate to prevent sepsis-induced acute liver injury.

ABSTRACT

To investigate the protective role of immune response gene 1 (IRG1) and exogenous itaconate in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Wild-type and IRG1-/- AIH mouse models were established, and samples of liver tissue and ocular blood were collected from each group of mice to assess the effects of IRG1/itaconate on the expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. The levels of liver enzymes and related inflammatory factors were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Liver histomorphology was detected through hematoxylin and eosin staining and then scored for liver injury, and the infiltration levels of tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells and related molecules in the liver tissue were detected through immunofluorescence staining in vitro. RNA sequencing and gene enrichment analysis were conducted to identify the corresponding molecules and pathways, and lentiviral transfection was used to generate TRM cell lines with IRG1, Jak3, Stat3, and p53 knockdown. Real-time quantitative PCR and western blot were performed to detect the expression levels of relevant mRNAs and proteins in the liver tissue and cells. The percentage of apoptotic cells was determined using flow cytometry. IRG1/itaconate effectively reduced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the pathological damage to liver tissue, thereby maintaining normal liver function. At the same time, IRG1/itaconate inhibited the JAK3/STAT3 signaling pathway, regulated the expression of related downstream proteins, and inhibited the proliferation and promoted the apoptosis of CD69+CD103+CD8+ TRM cells. For the first time, P53 was found to act as a downstream molecule of the JAK3/STAT3 pathway and was regulated by IRG1/itaconate to promote the apoptosis of CD8+ TRM cells. IRG1/itaconate can alleviate concanavalin A-induced autoimmune hepatitis in mice by inhibiting the proliferation and promoting the apoptosis of CD69+CD103+CD8+ TRM cells via the JAK3/STAT3/P53 pathway.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether attentional control serves as a mediator for mindfulness-based interventions for emotional distress, utilizing a randomized waitlist (WL)-controlled design. METHODS: A total of 498 participants with high emotional distress was recruited online and randomly assigned to a 49-day online Mindfulness Intervention for Emotional Distress (MIED) group (N = 249) or a WL control group (N = 249). Levels of attentional control, anxiety and depression were assessed at baseline (T0), Week 3 (T3), Week 5 (T5) and Week 7 (postintervention, T7). RESULTS: Linear mixed models revealed significant Group-by-Time interaction effects for attentional control (p < 0.001), anxiety (p < 0.001) and depression (p < 0.05). Latent growth curve analyses demonstrated a significant increase in attentional control and a decrease in anxiety and depression levels during the MIED programme. These changes becoming evident starting Week 3. Longitudinal mediation analyses revealed that the slope of attentional control significantly mediated the effects of the MIED programme on the slope of anxiety and depression levels. Further, attentional control level at Week 3 significantly mediates the effect of MIED programme on anxiety and depression levels at Weeks 5 and 7. Similarly, attentional control level at Week 5 significantly mediates the MIED programme's effects on anxiety and depression levels at Week 7. CONCLUSIONS: The present trial provides evidence suggesting that mindfulness interventions may alleviate emotional distress through the enhancement of attentional control. ABSTRACT

Heart attacks, also known as myocardial infarctions (MIs), are one of the main reasons people die from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) worldwide. Neferine, an alkaloid derived from Nelumbo nucifera seeds, has garnered interest due to its purported medicinal effects. In the current research, we induced MI in rats using the ß-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol to investigate whether neferine can improve cardiac dysfunction. The rats were separated into four groups: control, isoproterenol (ISO), and two treatment groups received neferine at doses of 10 or 20 mg/kg once daily for 28 days. On days 27 and 28, the groups undergoing treatment were administered with an ISO injection. Results showed that pretreatment with neferine strongly protected against changes in lipid profiles and cardiac functional markers in ISO-administered rats. Neferine attenuated histopathologic changes, collagen deposition, and myocardial fibrosis in rats administered ISO. Neferine pretreatment significantly inhibited the oxidative stress, inflammatory, and apoptotic markers in the heart of ISO-injected rats. This was achieved through Nrf2/Keap1/ARE signaling stimulation, TLR4/NF-κB/MAPK-mediated signaling inhibition, and activation of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. Using CB-Dock-2, researchers determined that neferine has a high binding affinity with protein receptors that are pivotal in several biological processes. In conclusion, the study provides strong evidence that pretreatment with neferine protects rats from ISO-induced heart damage.

ABSTRACT

Because large oil-immersed transformers are enclosed by a metal shell, the on-site localization means it is difficult to achieve the accurate location of the patrol micro-robot inside a given transformer. To address this issue, a spatial ultrasonic localization method based on wavelet decomposition and PHAT-ß-γ generalized cross correlation is proposed in this paper. The method is carried out with a five-element stereo ultrasonic array for the location of a transformer patrol robot. Firstly, the localization signal is decomposed into wavelet coefficients of different scales, which would realize the adaptive decomposition of the frequency of the localization signal from low frequencies to high frequencies. Then, the wavelet coefficients are denoised and reconstructed by using the semi-soft threshold function. Second, a modified phase transform-beta-gamma (PHAT-ß-γ) method is used to calculate the exact time delay between different sensors by increasing the weights of the PHAT weighting function and introducing a correlation function. Finally, by using the proposed method, the accurate localization of the transformer patrol micro-robot is achieved with a five-element stereo ultrasonic array. The simulation and test results show that inside a transformer experimental oil tank (120 cm × 100 cm × 100 cm, L × W × H), the relative error of transformer patrol micro-robot spatial localization is within 4.1%, and the maximum localization error is less than 3 cm, which meets the requirement of engineering localization.

ABSTRACT

Our previous study has reported that metastasis-associated protein 2 (MTA2) plays essential roles in tumorigenesis and aggressiveness of gastric cancer (GC). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of MTA2-mediated GC and its upstream regulation mechanism remain elusive. In this study, we identified a novel circular RNA (circRNA) generated from the MTA2 gene (circMTA2) as a crucial regulator in GC progression. CircMTA2 was highly expressed in GC tissues and cell lines, and circMTA2 promoted the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of GC cells both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, circMTA2 interacted with ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L3 (UCHL3) to restrain MTA2 ubiquitination and stabilize MTA2 protein expression, thereby facilitating tumor progression. Moreover, circMTA2 was mainly encapsulated and transported by exosomes to promote GC cell progression. Taken together, these findings uncover that circMTA2 suppresses MTA2 degradation by interacting with UCHL3, thereby promoting GC progression. In conclusion, we identified a cancer-promoting axis (circMTA2/UCHL3/MTA2) in GC progression, which paves the way for us to design and synthesize targeted inhibitors as well as combination therapies.

ABSTRACT

Objective: We aimed to investigate whether distress tolerance mediated the effects of mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) on anxiety and depression with two randomized controlled studies. Method: In Study 1, 374 participants with at least moderate emotional distress were randomized to an intervention group (N = 174) and a waitlist control group (N = 173). Mindfulness, distress tolerance, anxiety, and depression were measured at the pre-test, week 3, week 5, and post-test. In Study 2, 170 participants with emotional disorders were randomized to an intervention group (N = 86) and a control group (N = 84). The same variables were assessed at pre-test, weekly during the intervention, and post-test. Results: In both studies, linear mixed effect models showed that compared to the control group, mindfulness, distress tolerance, anxiety, and depression significantly improved in the intervention group. Parallel process latent growth curve models showed that changes in distress tolerance mediated the effects of the MBI on changes in anxiety and depression. Random-intercept cross-lagged panel models found that distress tolerance temporally preceded depression, but not anxiety. Conclusions: Distress tolerance is a potential mechanism underlying MBIs. Interventions targeting distress tolerance could be embedded in MBIs to enhance the intervention effects for emotional distress.

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms underlying cognitive dysfunction following traumatic brain injury (TBI) partially due to abnormal amyloid processor protein (APP) cleavage and neural hyperactivity. Binding of the extension domain of APP (ExD17) to the GABAbR1 receptor results in reduced neural activity, which might play a role in the mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction caused by TBI. METHODS: Stretch-induced injury was utilized to establish a cell injury model in HT22 cells. The TBI model was created by striking the exposed brain tissue with a free-falling weight. Topical or intraperitoneal administration of ExD17 was performed. Cell viability was assessed through a cell counting kit-8 assay, while intracellular Ca2+ was measured using Fluo-4. Western blotting was used to investigate the expression of APP amyloidogenic cleavage proteins, GABAbR1, phospholipase C (PLC), PLCB3, and synaptic proteins. ELISA was performed to analyze the levels of Aß42. Seizures were assessed using electroencephalography (EEG). Behaviors were evaluated through the novel object recognition test, open field test, elevated plus maze test, and nest-building test. RESULTS: ExD17 improved cell viability and reduced intracellular calcium in the cell injury model. The treatment also suppressed the increased expression of APP amyloidogenic cleavage proteins and Aß42 in both cell injury and TBI models. ExD17 treatment reversed the abnormal expression of GABAbR1, GRIA2, p-PLCG1/PLCG1 ratio, and p-PLCB3/PLCB3 ratio. In addition, ExD17 treatment reduced neural activity, seizure events, and their duration in TBI. Intraperitoneal injection of ExD17 improved behavioral outcomes in the TBI mouse model. CONCLUSIONS: ExD17 treatment results in a reduction of amyloidogenic APP cleavage and neuroexcitotoxicity, ultimately leading to an improvement in the behavioral deficits observed in TBI mice.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether kinetic heterogeneity in dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) improves the specificity of breast cancer (BC) diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The DCE-MRI data of patients with benign breast tumours and BC from June 2020 to July 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. MATLAB and SPM were used to determine six major kinetic parameters: peak, enhancement volume, heterogeneity, as well as persistent, plateau, and washout proportions. Continuous variables were compared using the Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U tests, and categorical variables were compared using the chi-square or Fisher's exact tests. Receiver operating characteristic curves were plotted. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to evaluate agreement between the two observers. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between benign and malignant breast tumours. RESULTS: In total, 147 patients (mean age, 47 years old) were included in the study, 76 of whom had BC. Data analysis by the two observers showed good consistency in the peak, enhancement volume, persistent proportion, plateau proportion, washout proportion, and heterogeneity, with ICCs of 0.865, 0.988, 0.906, 0.940, 0.740, and 0.867, respectively (p < 0.001). In the DCE kinetic analysis, differences in all the six kinetic parameters were statistically significant (p < 0.05). The area under the curve for heterogeneity was 0.92 (95% CI:0.88,0.97), and the sensitivity and specificity were 0.895 and 0.845, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that heterogeneity was an independent predictor of BC compared to benign breast tumours (OR=2.020; 95% CI:1.316, 3.100; p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: The kinetic heterogeneity of DCE-MRI can effectively distinguish between benign and malignant breast tumours and improve the specificity of BC diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Several studies have indicated that the plasma concentration of risperidone increases 3-5-fold during the acute-phase reaction (APR) of inflammation or infection. Psychiatric symptoms are present or deteriorate when the dose is lowered; thus, the complex effects of inflammation on the pharmacokinetics of risperidone need to be examined. METHODS: We established a APR model in rabbits induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and studied the effect of APR on pharmacokinetics, distribution and disposition of risperidone in vivo and in vitro. RESULTS: Following intramuscular administration, the plasma exposures for risperidone and its active metabolite (9-hydroxyrisperidone) were increased approximately 6-fold on day 2 of inflammation. The exposure values did not change between day 2 and 5 of inflammation, nor did the metabolite-to-parent ratio before and during inflammation. Following oral administration, the increase of risperidone exposure was twice as high as that following intramuscular administration during APR. However, the concentration of risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone in brain tissue was similar between the inflammatory and control groups. Moreover, the plasma protein binding (PPB) of risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone associated with inflammation were all increased to >99 %. In addition, risperidone and 9-hydroxyrisperidone were not substrates of the key transporters, OATP1B3, OCT2, OAT3, MATE-1, or MATE-2 K. The expression of progesterone X receptor and P-glycoprotein was inhibited by LPS. CONCLUSION: During APR, reduced expression of P-glycoprotein and increased PPB were responsible for increased exposure in plasma, while maintaining stable concentrations in the brain, and risperidone does not need to be dose-adjusted so as to achieve psychopharmacological outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the performance of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC; values or category) alone, Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System version 2.1 (PI-RADS v2.1) scoring alone, and the two in combination, to diagnose transition zone prostate cancers (PCas). METHODS: This retrospective study included 222 patients who underwent multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging of the prostate between May 2020 and December 2022 and who had pathologically confirmed PCa or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System version 2.1 and ADC (values or category) were used in the assessment of suspicious findings identified in the transition zone. The interobserver agreements for region-of-interest measurements were calculated by intraclass correlation coefficients. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the performance of PI-RADS v2.1 alone and in combination with ADC (values or category) to diagnose PCa. Receiver operating characteristic curve and DeLong test were used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the quantitative parameters. RESULTS: A total of 152 patients had BPH, and 70 patients had PCa. For BPH versus PCa, the ADC values of PCa (0.64 × 10 -3 ± 0.16 × 10 -3 mm 2 /s) were significantly lower than BPH (1.06 ± 0.18 × 10 -3 mm 2 /s; P < 0.001). The PI-RADS scores for PCa (5 [interquartile range, 5-5]) were significantly higher than BPH (2 [interquartile range, 2-3]; P < 0.001). For all patients who had PI-RADS 1-5, the combined use of ADC (values or category) together with PI-RADS v2.1 did not perform significantly better than the use of PI-RADS v2.1 alone. The receiver operating characteristic of ADC category in combination with PI-RADS v2.1 score, 0.756 (95% confidence interval, 0.646-0.846), was significantly higher than that for PI-RADS 2.1 alone, 0.631 (95% confidence interval, 0.514-0.738), in PI-RADS 3-4 lesions ( P = 0.047). CONCLUSION: The ADC category can help to improve the diagnostic performance of PI-RADS v2.1 category 3-4 lesions in diagnosing PCa.

ABSTRACT

Li+ insertion-induced structure transformation in crystalline electrodes vitally influence the energy density and cycle life of secondary lithium-ion battery. However, the influence mechanism of structure transformation-induced Li+ migration on the electrochemical performance of micro-crystal materials is still unclear and the strategy to profit from such structure transformation remains exploited. Here, an interesting self-optimization of structure evolution during electrochemical cycling in Nb2 O5 micro-crystal with rich domain boundaries is demonstrated, which greatly improves the charge transfer property and mechanical strength. The lattice rearrangement activates the Li+ diffusion kinetics and hinders the particle crack, thus enabling a nearly zero-degeneration operation after 8000 cycles. Full cell paired with lithium cobalt oxides displays an exceptionally high capacity of 176 mA h g-1 at 8000 mA g-1 and excellent long-term durability at 6000 mA g-1 with 63% capacity retention over 2000 cycles. Interestingly, a unique fingerprint based on the intensity ratio of two X-ray diffraction peaks is successfully extracted as a measure of Nb2 O5 electrochemical performance. The structure self-optimization for fast charge transfer and high mechanical strength exemplifies a new battery electrode design concept and opens up a vast space of strategy to develop high-performance lithium-ion batteries with high energy density and ultra-long cycle life.

Background: Both trait and state mindfulness are associated with less depression and anxiety, but the mechanisms remain unknown. Distress tolerance, an important transdiagnostic factor of emotional disorders, may mediate the relationship between mindfulness and depression/anxiety. Method: Study 1 examined the mediation model at the between-person level in a large cross-sectional sample (n = 905). In Study 2, a daily diary study (n = 110) was conducted to examine within-person changes. Participants were invited to complete daily diaries measuring daily mindfulness, distress tolerance, depression and anxiety for 14 consecutive days. Results: In Study 1, results of simple mediation analyses indicated that distress tolerance mediated the relationship between mindfulness and depression/anxiety at the between-person level. In Study 2, results of multilevel mediation analyses indicated that, in both the concurrent model and time-lagged model, daily distress tolerance mediated the effects of daily mindfulness on daily depression/anxiety at both the within- and between-person level. Conclusions: Distress tolerance is a mechanism underlying the relationship between mindfulness and depression/anxiety. Individuals with high or fluctuating depression and anxiety may benefit from short-term or long-term mindfulness training to increase distress tolerance. (AU)

ABSTRACT

We report high-performance Al0.1Ga0.9N p-i-n ultraviolet (UV) avalanche photodiodes (APDs) based on sapphire substrates with stable breakdown voltages (VBR) around 113.4 V, low dark current densities (JBR) below 9 × 10-4 A/cm2 and a high avalanche gain over 2 × 106. A two-step deposition method was employed to reduce passivation-induced plasma damage while maintaining high dielectric film quality. Consistent JBR for various mesa sizes at the VBR are demonstrated, which reveals the suppression of the surface leakage current. Uniform electroluminescence (EL) distributions during the avalanche multiplication processes are displayed, which confirms the elimination of edge breakdown. Pure bulk leakage current distributions and uniform body avalanche breakdown behaviors are observed for the first time in AlGaN APDs. The emission spectra of the EL at various current levels are also presented.

ABSTRACT

Liver injury is one of the most severe traffic trauma. The development of accurate liver finite element model is beneficial for improving the biofidelity and validity in crash simulations, aiming to analyze the injury in accidents. 12 human liver finite element models in the current research were constructed from high resolution CT data of a Chinese male 50th percentile human subject, including the main structures like left lobe, right lobe, capsule, parenchyma and falciform ligament. The simulations based on Nava et al. experiment were conducted to validate the models and make comparisons of modeling method accuracy. The results demonstrated that the larger deviation happened to the tetra models due to the stiffer algorithm compared to the hex models, which were more sensitive to element size. The existence of capsule had significant effects on the liver mechanical responses, reducing the liver tissue pressure. Shell elements were more suitable for modeling the capsule.

ABSTRACT

The thermal decomposition mechanism of hydroxyacetone from 850 to 1390 K was examined by using flash pyrolysis vacuum ultraviolet photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry combined with density functional theory calculation. The results showed that keto-enol tautomerisms could occur prior to the thermal decomposition of hydroxyacetone. The decomposition pathways of hydroxyacetone and its isomer, 2-hydroxypropanal were characterized. The thermal decomposition reactions started at about 950 K. The homolysis reactions related to the cleavage of the CCO-CCOH bond of hydroxyacetone and 2-hydroxypropanal, as well as CH3 loss of hydroxyacetone, dominated the initial decomposition reactions. The subsequent decompositions of the radical intermediates generated by the initial homolysis decompositions were the major secondary decomposition reactions. The formation pathways of small molecules, such as H2, CH4, H2O, and HCHO, were proposed to proceed via molecular elimination reactions facilitated by the active α-H atoms. These elimination reactions were not negligible at high temperatures above 1230 K.

ABSTRACT

Depression is a common chronic psychiatric illness, which is resistant to medical treatments. While melatonin may alleviate certain depression symptoms, evidence for its efficacy against core symptoms is lacking. Here, we tested a mechanism whereby melatonin rescues the behavioral outcomes of the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) mouse model of depression. CUMS mice showed depressive behaviors to tail suspension, open field behavior, and sucrose preference test, and cognitive dysfunction in the Morris water maze. Impairments in these measures were relieved by melatonin treatment. Moreover, CUMS mice had impaired glymphatic function across the sleep-wake cycle due to the astrocytic loss and disturbance of circadian regulation of the polarized expression of aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels in perivascular astrocytes. EEG results in CUMS mice showed a reduced total sleep time and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, due to sleep fragmentation in the light phase. CUMS mice lost the normal rhythmic expressions of circadian proteins Per2, Cry2, Bmal1, Clock, and Per1. However, the melatonin treatment restored glymphatic system function and the polarization of AQP4, while improving sleep structure, and rectifying the abnormal expression of Per2, Bmal1, Clock, and Per1 in CUMS mice. Interestingly, Per2 expression correlated negatively with the polarization of AQP4. Further studies demonstrated that Per2 directed the location of AQP4 expression via interactions with the α-dystrobrevin (Dtna) subunit of AQP4 in primary cultured astrocytes. In conclusion, we report a new mechanism whereby melatonin improves depression outcomes by regulating the expression of the circadian protein Per2, maintaining the circadian rhythm of astrocytic AQP4 polarization, and restoring glymphatic function.

Background: Both trait and state mindfulness are associated with less depression and anxiety, but the mechanisms remain unknown. Distress tolerance, an important transdiagnostic factor of emotional disorders, may mediate the relationship between mindfulness and depression/anxiety. Method: Study 1 examined the mediation model at the between-person level in a large cross-sectional sample (n = 905). In Study 2, a daily diary study (n = 110) was conducted to examine within-person changes. Participants were invited to complete daily diaries measuring daily mindfulness, distress tolerance, depression and anxiety for 14 consecutive days. Results: In Study 1, results of simple mediation analyses indicated that distress tolerance mediated the relationship between mindfulness and depression/anxiety at the between-person level. In Study 2, results of multilevel mediation analyses indicated that, in both the concurrent model and time-lagged model, daily distress tolerance mediated the effects of daily mindfulness on daily depression/anxiety at both the within- and between-person level. Conclusions: Distress tolerance is a mechanism underlying the relationship between mindfulness and depression/anxiety. Individuals with high or fluctuating depression and anxiety may benefit from short-term or long-term mindfulness training to increase distress tolerance.

ABSTRACT

Objectives There is evidence to suggest that only 2-4 weeks of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) can already alleviate emotional stress. The current studies sought to examine whether experiential avoidance mediated the effects of MBIs on emotional distress during an early stage of the intervention. Methods: Chinese participants with high emotional distress were recruited. Study 1 included 324 participants, randomly assigned to an online MBI (N = 171) or a control group (N = 153). Experiential avoidance and general emotional distress were measured at baseline and after the 3rd week of the intervention. Study 2 included 158 participants, randomly assigned to an online MBI (N = 79) or a control group (N = 79). Experiential avoidance and emotional distress were measured at baseline and weekly in the first three weeks. Results: Compared to the control group, experiential avoidance and emotional distress were significantly improved in the MBI group during the first three weeks of the intervention (Cohen's d = 0.22-0.63). Moreover, changes in experiential avoidance mediated the effects of MBI on emotional distress in the early stage in both contemporary and lagged mediation models. Discussion: Experiential avoidance is an important mediator during the early-stage of MBIs for alleviating emotional distress.
