ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to establish an effective prognostic nomogram model based on the Naples prognostic score (NPS) for resectable thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). A total of 277 patients with ESCC, who underwent standard curative esophagectomy and designated as study cohort, were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into different groups, including NPS 0, NPS 1, NPS 2, and NPS 3 or 4 groups, for further analysis, and the results were validated in an external cohort of 122 ESCC patients, who underwent surgery at another cancer center. In our multivariate analysis of the study cohort showed that the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) stage, systemic inflammation score, and NPS were the independent prognostic factors for the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) durations. In addition, the differential grade was also an independent prognostic factor for the OS in the patients with ESCC after surgery (all P < .05). The area under the curve of receiver operator characteristics for the PFS and OS prediction with systemic inflammation score and NPS were 0.735 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.676-0.795, P < .001) and 0.835 (95% CI 0.786-0.884, P < .001), and 0.734 (95% CI 0.675-0.793, P < .001) and 0.851 (95% CI 0.805-0.896, P < .001), respectively. The above independent predictors for OS or PFS were all selected in the nomogram model. The concordance indices (C-indices) of the nomogram models for predicting OS and PFS were 0.718 (95% CI 0.681-0.755) and 0.669 (95% CI 0.633-0.705), respectively, which were higher than that of the 7th edition of American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM staging system [C-index 0.598 (95% CI 0.558-0.638) for OS and 0.586 (95% CI 0.546-0.626) for PFS]. The calibration curves for predicting the 5-year OS or PFS showed a good agreement between the prediction by nomogram and actual observation. In the external validation cohort, the nomogram discrimination for OS was better than that of the 7th edition of TNM staging systems [C-index: 0.697 (95% CI 0.639-0.755) vs 0.644 (95% CI 0.589-0.699)]. The calibration curves showed good consistency in predicting the 5-year survival between the actual observation and nomogram predictions. The decision curve also showed a higher potential of the clinical application of predicting the 5-years OS of the proposed nomogram model as compared to that of the 7th edition of TNM staging systems. The preoperative NPS-based nomogram model had a certain potential role for predicting the prognosis of ESCC patients.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To describe the clinical characteristics of eyes using multimodal imaging features with acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) lesions following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. METHODS: Retrospective case series study. From December 18, 2022 to February 14, 2023, previously healthy cases within 1-week infection with SARS-CoV-2 and examined at Tianjin Eye Hospital to confirm the diagnosis of AMN were included in the study. Totally 5 males and 9 females [mean age: 29.93±10.32 (16-49)y] were presented for reduced vision, with or without blurred vision. All patients underwent best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure, slit lamp microscopy, indirect fundoscopy. Simultaneously, multimodal imagings fundus photography (45° or 200° field of view) was performed in 7 cases (14 eyes). Near infrared (NIR) fundus photography was performed in 9 cases (18 eyes), optical coherence tomography (OCT) in 5 cases (10 eyes), optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in 9 cases (18 eyes), and fundus fluorescence angiography (FFA) in 3 cases (6 eyes). Visual field was performed in 1 case (2 eyes). RESULTS: Multimodal imaging findings data from 14 patients with AMN were reviewed. All eyes demonstrated different extent hyperreflective lesions at the level of the inner nuclear layer and/or outer plexus layer on OCT or OCTA. Fundus photography (45° or 200° field of view) showed irregular hypo-reflective lesion around the fovea in 7 cases (14 eyes). OCTA demonstrated that the superficial retinal capillary plexus (SCP) vascular density, deep capillary plexus (DCP) vascular density and choriocapillaris (CC) vascular density was reduced in 9 case (18 eyes). Among the follow-up cases (2 cases), vascular density increased in 1 case with elevated BCVA; another case has vascular density decrease in one eye and basically unchanged in other eye. En face images of the ellipsoidal zone and interdigitation zone injury showed a low wedge-shaped reflection contour appearance. NIR image mainly show the absence of the outer retinal interdigitation zone in AMN. No abnormal fluorescence was observed in FFA. Corresponding partial defect of the visual field were visualized via perimeter in one case. CONCLUSION: The morbidity of SARS-CoV-2 infection with AMN is increased. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the possible, albeit rare, AMN after SARS-CoV-2 infection and focus on multimodal imaging features. OCT, OCTA, and infrared fundus phase are proved to be valuable tools for detection of AMN in patients with SARS-CoV-2.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the association of ganglion cell complex thickness (GCCt), global loss volume percentage (GLV%), and focal loss volume percentage (FLV%) with structural and functional findings among patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CCSC) and recurrent central serous chorioretinopathy (RCSC) by optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: Among 29 patients with monocular affected central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), 15 had CCSC, and 14 had RCSC. The GCCt, FLV%, GLV%, and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and sublesional choroidal thickness (SLCT) values were determined using OCT, and the association of these characteristics with neural structure parameters, choroidal morphology, features and functional alterations were estimated for the CCSC and RCSC patients. RESULTS: In CCSC, the affected eyes had significantly lower GCCt values than the fellow eyes in the macular regions (all P<0.05), with the highest GCCt observed in the inferior area. A significant association was found between the GCCt in different regions and the change in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA; r=-0.696; -0.695; -0.694, P<0.05) in CCSC patients. A statistically significant moderate negative correlation indicated that long-term CCSC was associated with greater differences in the GCCt in different regions between affected and fellow eyes (r=-0.562; r=-0.556; r=0.525, P<0.05). Additionally, observation of thickened SFCT was associated with a worse FLV% (r=0.599; r=0.546, P<0.05) in both groups. Similarly, thickened SLCT was associated with FLV% in RCSC patients (r=0.544, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The distribution and GCCt are associated with the duration and visual outcomes of CCSC, whereas there is no correlation among RCSC patients. FLV% may be instrumental in differentiating the various outer choroidal vessels (pachyvessels) in long-term CSC. These results suggest that neural structure parameters may aid in estimating and predicting the recovery of altered morphology and function in CCSC and RCSC patients.

BACKGROUND: Form deprivation myopia is a type of ametropia, with identifiable causes in humans, that has been induced in many animals. The age of onset of myopia induced by monocular form deprivation coincides with the period of visual development in guinea pigs. However, visual acuity of form-deprived eyes in guinea pigs is not understood yet. In this study, we investigated whether monocular form deprivation would affect visual acuity in infant guinea pigs by evaluating the development of myopia and amblyopia after monocular form deprivation, and whether form deprivation myopia and amblyopia occurred simultaneously or successively. METHODS: Twenty pigmented guinea pigs (2 weeks old) were randomly assigned to two groups: monocularly form-deprived (n=10), in which facemasks modified from latex balloons covered the right eye, and normal controls (n=10). Refraction, axial length, and visual acuity were measured at 4 intervals (after 0, 1, 4, and 8 weeks of form deprivation), using cycloplegic streak retinoscopy, A-scan ultrasonography (with an oscillation frequency of 10 MHz), and sweep visual evoked potentials (sweep VEPs), respectively. Sweep VEPs were performed with correction of the induced myopic refractive error. RESULTS: Longer deprivation periods resulted in significant refractive errors in form-deprived eyes compared with those in contralateral and normal control eyes; the axial lengths of form-deprived eyes increased significantly after 4 and 8 weeks of form deprivation. These results revealed that myopia was established at 4 weeks. The acuity of form-deprived eyes was unchanged compared to that at the pretreatment time point, while that of contralateral eyes and eyes in normal control guinea pigs improved; there were significant differences between the deprived eyes and the other two open eyes from 1 to 8 weeks of form deprivation, showing that amblyopia was possibly established during 1 week of form deprivation. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated the feasibility of using sweep VEPs to estimate the visual acuity of guinea pigs. Further, our results revealed that amblyopia likely occurred earlier than myopia; amblyopia and myopia coexisted after a long duration of monocular form deprivation in guinea pigs. Understanding this relationship may help provide insights into failures of treatment of amblyopia associated with myopic anisometropia.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic values of a novel evaluated system, named the CONN (combination of Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 [NRS-2002] and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio [NLR]), in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) by curative esophagectomy. A total of 278 patients with ESCC receiving standard curative esophagectomy were retrospectively analyzed. The CONN was calculated by combined NRS-2002 and NLR according to the corresponding cutoff values: patients with both elevated NRS-2002 (≥3.0) and NLR (≥3.0) were allocated a score of 2, and patients showing one or neither were allocated a score of 1 or 0, respectively. In our univariate analysis, the following factors were significantly associated with poor PFS and OS: T stage, N stage, TNM stage, NLR, NRS-2002 and CONN (all P < 0.05). Furthermore, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that N stage (P = 0.039), NRS-2002 (P = 0.041) and CONN (P = 0.001) were independent prognostic factors for PFS. While T stage (P = 0.017), N stage (P = 0.048), NLR (P = 0.021), NRS-2002 (P = 0.001) and CONN (P = 0.001) were independent prognostic factors for OS. In conclusion, CONN was an independent prognostic marker for survival prediction in patients with ESCC receiving surgery.

ABSTRACT

Circ-Foxo3 is a circRNA encoded by the human FOXO3 gene and works as a sponge for potential microRNAs (miRNAs) to regulate cancer progression. However, the role of circ-Foxo3 in esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) is not clear. In this study, circ-Foxo3 was lowly expressed in cell lines and ESCC tissues. Meanwhile, overexpression of circ-Foxo3 inhibited cell growth, migration, and invasion, whether in vivo or in vitro. Mechanically, we found a potential miRNA target, miR-23a, which negatively correlated with circ-Foxo3 in ESCC. Then, a luciferase assay confirmed the relationship between the circ-Foxo3 and miRNA. Moreover, circ-Foxo3 upregulation of PTEN occurred through "sponging" miR-23a. Taken together, these results indicated that the circ-Foxo3/miR-23a/PTEN pathway was critical for inhibiting the ESCC progression. This may provide a promising target for treat ESCC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic effect and survival outcome using nomogram by incorporating significant inflammatory markers in patients with thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) who received chemoradiotherapy (CRT) or single radiotherapy (RT). METHOD: A total of 266 patients diagnosed with thoracic ESCC receiving standard curative RT only or concurrent CRT were retrospectively analysed. The patients were grouped for statistical analysis depending on the median values of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and C-reactive protein/albumin (CRP/Alb) ratio. The therapeutic effect was analysed by univariate and multivariate logistic analyses. The survival prognosis was estimated by univariate and multivariate Cox analyses. At last, the nomogram was developed by incorporating the significant inflammatory markers and clinicopathological parameters, and the predictive value was verified by calibration curve, concordance index (C-index) and decision curve. RESULTS: The treatment responses were highly associated with clinical stage, tumor location, NLR, PLR and CRP/Alb ratio (all P<0.05) by univariate logistic analysis. However, in the multivariate logistic analysis, the results showed that only CRP/Alb ratio (P=0.000) and TNM stage (P=0.008) were independent risk parameters for tumour response. In addition, NLR, PLR, CRP/Alb ratio, age and TNM stage were significantly associated with OS by the univariate Cox analysis (all P<0.05). Furthermore, the multivariate Cox analysis showed that only CRP/Alb ratio (P=0.000), TNM stage (P=0.000) and age (P=0.001) were considered independent prognostic factors for OS. Finally, the calibration curves of nomogram were highly consistent with actual observation for the therapeutic effect and prognosis, and the decision curve analysis showed more potential of clinical benefit of the nomogram compared with TNM staging system. CONCLUSION: This research found that nomogram-integrated CRP/Alb ratio was promising as a predictive model for the therapeutic effect and survival outcome in patients with thoracic ESCC receiving CRT or single RT.

BACKGROUND POU5F1B, serving as a carcinogen, participates in radiosensitivity of several tumors. However, in esophageal cancer, its potential mechanism and function in regulating radiosensitivity remain unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS The expression level of POU5F1B was detected in plasma of esophageal tumor patients and cancer cell lines. The effect of POU5F1B knockdown on cell proliferation and colony formation was determined using CCK-8 assay and colony formation assay. Cell apoptosis rate was detected by flow cytometry. RESULTS POU5F1B expression level declined after radiotherapy in the plasma of esophageal cancer patients (p=0.025). Compared with HEEPIC, the level of POU5F1B was upregulated in ECA109 (p<0.01), ECA9706 (p<0.01), KYSE410 (p<0.01), and KYSE510 (p=0.036). The silencing of POU5F1B played a role in inhibiting colony formation. After radiotherapy, the apoptosis rates in the ECA109 with 4Gy si-POU5F1B group and 4Gy si-NC group were 39.1±0.1% and 35.3±0.1%, respectively (p=0.0193). The rate was 21.00±0.1 and 29.1±0.1% (p<0.0072) in the si-NC group and si-POU5F1B group, respectively. For proliferation rate, 4Gy si-POU5F1B ECA109 performed better than 4Gy si-NC. CONCLUSIONS Radiotherapy contributed to the decline in the expression level of POU5F1B in plasma, which was upregulated in ECA109, ECA9706, KYSE410, and KYSE510, but not in HEEPIC. The knockdown of POU5F1B increased the radiosensitivity of esophageal cancer cell lines.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic values of Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) and hematologic inflammation markers in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) receiving curative esophagectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 277 patients with ESCC treated with standard curative esophagectomy were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were grouped for further analysis according to the systemic inflammation score (SIS), the combination of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (CNP) score and NRS-2002 score. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were adopted to calculate and compare the progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates with these parameters. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to carry out univariate and multivariate analyses. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to verify the accuracy of SIS, CNP and NRS-2002 for survival prediction. RESULTS: In univariate analysis, the following factors were significantly associated with poor PFS and OS: sex, T stage, N stage, TNM stage, SIS, CNP and NRS-2002 (all P<0.05). Furthermore, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that CNP (hazard ratio [HR]=1.602; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.341-1.913; P=0.000), NRS-2002 (HR=2.062; 95% CI 1.523-2.792; P=0.000) and TNM stage (HR=1.194; 95% CI 1.058-1.565; P=0.048) were independent prognostic factors for PFS. Correspondingly, CNP (HR=1.707; 95% CI 1.405-2.074; P=0.000), NRS-2002 (HR=2.716; 95% CI 1.972-3.740; P=0.000) and TNM stage (HR=1.363; 95% CI 1.086-1.691; P=0.036) were also independent prognostic factors for OS. Finally, the results of ROC curves indicated that CNP and NRS-2002 were superior to SIS as a predictive factor for PFS or OS in patients with ESCC receiving surgery. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that CNP combined with NRS-2002 is promising as a predictive marker for predicting clinical outcomes in patients with ESCC receiving surgery.

AIM: To compare the results of axial length (AL) biometry in cataract eyes by three methods: immersion B-ultrasound (IB) biometry, immersion A-ultrasound (IA) biometry and optical low coherence reflectometry. METHODS: In this prospective observational study of eyes with cataract AL measurements were performed using immersion ultrasound and optical low coherence reflectometry device. The results were evaluated using Bland-Altman analyses. The differences between both methods were assessed using the paired t-test, and its correlation was evaluated by Pearson coefficient. RESULTS: Eighty eyes of 80 patients (39 men and 41 women) for cataract surgery were included in the study. The values of AL could be got from all 80 eyes by IB and IA, the difference of AL measurements between IA and IB was of no statistical significance (P=0.97); the mean difference in AL measurements was -0.031 mm (P=0.26; 95%CI, -0.09 to 0.02); linear regression showed an excellent correlation (r=0.98, P<0.0001). Forty-five of eighty eyes with results of AL measurements, which can be obtained by three methods; the difference of AL measurements was of no statistical significance (IA vs IB, P=0.18; IA vs Lenstar, P=0.51; IB vs Lenstar, P=0.07); linear regression showed an excellent correlation (IA vs IB, r=0.99; IA vs Lenstar, r=0.96; IB vs Lenstar, r=0.96); Bland-Altman analysis also showed good agreement between the two methods [IA vs IB, 95% limits of agreement (LoA), -0.36 to 0.28 mm; IA vs Lenstar, 95% LoA, -0.65 to 0.69 mm; IB vs Lenstar, 95% LoA, -0.55 to 0.68 mm]. CONCLUSION: Measurements with the optical low coherence reflectometry correlated well with IB and IA. In the eyes with serious refractive medium opacity, the measurements of AL could not be achieved or existed deviations when using optical low coherence reflectometry device. Under such circumstances, we should choose IA or IB as the optimization method to obtain measurements, in order to get much more accurate results.

ABSTRACT

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is not amenable to current targeted therapies and carries a poor prognosis; however, a specific systemic regimen cannot yet be recommended. The optimal duration of oxaliplatin (OXA) and S-1 combinatorial chemotherapy in patients with advanced breast cancer is not currently known and is likely to be patient-specific based on efficacy and toxicity. In the present study, 52 patients with advanced TNBC received OXA and S-1 chemotherapy. The efficacy and toxicity were observed. The results showed that the median number of regimens was 4 (range 2-6). The therapeutic efficacy was evaluated in all patients. The complete response, partial response, overall response and disease control rates were 3.8, 30.8, 34.6 and 69.2%, respectively. Four patients were lost to follow-up, and the median follow-up time was 13.7 months. The median progression-free survival time was 6.7 months [95% confidence interval (CI), 4.5-9.0] and the median overall survival (OS) time was 13.3 months (95% CI, 9.1-17.5). From the subgroup analysis, it was found that the median OS time of patients with stage IV disease and ≥2 metastases was significantly shorter than that of patients with stage IIIC disease and only 1 metastasis [11.3 vs. 22.7 months, P=0.010 (stage IV vs. stage IIC); 11.3 vs. 15.7 months, P=0.048 (≥2 vs. 1 metastasis)]. The main grade 3/4 toxic effects were neutropenia (11.5%), nausea (7.7%) and nerve toxicity (3.8%). The other toxic effects were mainly of grades 1-2 and included diarrhea, liver dysfunction, stomatitis, anemia and hand-foot syndrome. In conclusion, OXA combined with S-1 is an effective and tolerable regimen for the treatment of patients with advanced TNBC.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of three dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) with tamoxifen in treating patients with postoperative malignant glioma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 60 patients of postoperative malignant glioma were randomly assigned into two groups, 30 patients were treated with 3D-CRT plus tamoxifen (treatment group), and the other 30 patients with 3D-CRT plus temozolomide (control group). All patients were radiated by 6MV X-ray, 2.0 Gy per fraction, once daily, with a total dose (DT) of 56~60 Gy. Tamoxifen was delivered at 60 mg /m2/d, temozolomide was given at 75 mg/m2/d. All patients were treated with concurrent radiotherapy. RESULTS: One, 2, 3 year survival rates of treatment and control group were 63.3%, 30.0%, 23.0% and 70.0%, 33.3%, 26.7%, respectively (χ2=0.01, 0.23, 0.09, P>0.05). The rate of thromboembolism in treatment group was 6.7%. CONCLUSION: Therapeutic efficacy of two groups was similar, but it was more cost- effective in treatment group, and toxicity did not increase.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the electronic anti-nausea instrument (EANI) combined with hydrochloride palonosetron for prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting following highly emetogenic chemotherapy. METHODS: Patients who received highly emetogenic chemotherapy were randomly assigned to a treatment group (60 patients) treated with EANI combined with hydrochloride palonosetron, and control group (also 60 patients) given only hydrochloride palonosetron. Chemotherapy related nausea and vomiting were observed and recorded in both groups of patients from the start till the end of chemotherapy. RESULTS: Complete control rates of vomiting in treatment and control group were 40%, and 35%, respectively, without any statistical ly significant difference (p> 0.05); however the response rates are 95.0%, 78.3%, respectively, with statistical difference (p< 0.05). Complete control rates of nausea in treatment and control group were 36.7%, 30%, respectively, without statistical difference (p> 0.05); but the response rates are 90.0%, 76.7%, respectively, with statistical difference (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: EANI combined with hydrochloride palonosetron for prevention of nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy could be more effective than hydrochloride palonosetron alone, and can be recommended for use in prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting following highly emetogenic chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of conservative surgery plus chemo-, radio-therapy in treating patients with early stage breast cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eligible patients were treated by postoperative chemotherapy as well as whole-breast irradiation with tumor bed boost. Postoperative radiotherapy consisted of 6 MV whole breast linear accelerator irradiation with two tangential half fields to a total dose of 45~50 Gy, followed by 10~15 MeVß boost irradiation to tumor bed for 10~20 Gy, total dose 56~66 Gy. RESULTS: Fifty-two patients were enrolled. Overall 1-, 2- and 3 year survival rates were 98.1%, 92.3%, and 90.4%, respectively, with a local recurrence rate of 5.77%. Cosmetic results were evaluated as good by doctors in 90.4% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: Breast conservative surgery combined with chemo- radio-therapy could be a treatment option for Chinese patients with early stage breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and complications of chemotherapy and late course three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) in treating patients with stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients were divided into two groups: to receive chemotherapy and late course 3DCRT (3DCRT group), or chemotherapy and conventional fraction radiation (control group). In the 3DCRT-group, patients were given 6~15 MV X-rays with a total dose of 40 Gy, followed by 3DCRT, 2.5 Gy~3.0 Gy per fraction, 1 fraction/ every day, total 68 Gy~70 Gy; in the control group, with conventional fraction radiation the total dose was 64~66 Gy. The chemotherapy regimen in both cases was EP (VP-16 and DDP). RESULTS: Sixty four patients with stage III NSCLC were divided into two groups: 32 patients into 3DCRT, 32 into the control group. One and 2-year survival rates in 3DCRT and control group were 87.5%, 56.3%mad 65.6%, 34.4%, respectively (P<0.05); local control rates were 90.6%, 81.3% and 65.6%, 53.1%, respectively (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Chemotherapy and late course 3DCRT is associated with improved survival rate in patients with stage III NSCLC with good tolerability.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare expression level of serum tumor associated materials (TAM) with several conventional serum tumor biomarkers, eg., carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen19-9 (CA19-9), carbohydrate antigen 15-3 (CA15-3), alpha-fetoprotein(AFP), in selected solid tumors. METHODS: Patients diagnosed histologically or cytologically with liver, breast, esophageal, gastric, colorectal or pancreatic cancers were enrolled into this study. After diagnosis, the level of TAM was determined by chemical colorimetry, and levels of conventional tumor markers was measured by chemiluminescence methods. RESULTS: A total of 560 patients were enrolled into this study. No statistically significant difference was detected in TAM and the above mentioned tumor biomarkers in terms of their positivity and negativity (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Detection of TAM in liver, breast, esophageal, gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer patients demonstrates a good accordance with CEA, CA199, CA153, and AFP, thus suggesting that further study is warranted to verify whether TAM could be a surrogate for these conventional biomarkers.
