ABSTRACT

Developing an effective and sustainable method for separating and purifying oily wastewater is a significant challenge. Conventional separation membrane and sponge systems are limited in their long-term usage due to weak antifouling abilities and poor processing capacity for systems with multiple oils. In this study, we present a dual-bionic superwetting gears overflow system with liquid steering abilities, which enables the separation of oil-in-water emulsions into pure phases. This is achieved through the synergistic effect of surface superwettability and complementary topological structures. By applying the surface energy matching principle, water and oil in the mixture rapidly and continuously spread on preferential gear surfaces, forming distinct liquid films that repel each other. The topological structures of the gears facilitate the overflow and rapid transfer of the liquid films, resulting in a high separation flux with the assistance of rotational motion. Importantly, this separation model mitigates the decrease in separation flux caused by fouling and maintains a consistently high separation efficiency for multiple oils with varying densities and surface tensions.

ABSTRACT

Background: Primary Ewing's sarcoma of sphenoid sinus, observed in children and adolescents, is an extremely rare malignancy. Such rarity makes the imaging features and treatment strategies for Ewing's sarcoma of sphenoid sinus unclear. This study aimed to offer guidance for treating this very disease by describing a patient with a rare primary Ewing's sarcoma of sphenoid sinus and reviewing the available data in the literature. Case description: A case of Ewing's sarcoma in sphenoid sinus treated with multidisciplinary treatment approaches, including tumor resection, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and antiangiogenic therapy, was presented in this study. Moreover, literature for Ewing's sarcoma in the head was systematically searched, and two cases in the sphenoid sinus and five cases in the sphenoid bone were identified. Furthermore, the clinical features, imaging findings, pathological characteristics, treatment, and prognosis were summarized. Conclusion: Tumor resection combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy may provide favorable results for patients with Ewing's sarcoma of sphenoid sinus and bone. However, more reports are still necessary to further clarify optimal management.

ABSTRACT

The overflow behavior of liquid at a curved surface or a surface border is a common phenomenon in many circumstances of daily life and industry. Accurate control of overflow is beneficial for improving the convenience of our daily life and efficiency of production, thus has great importance not only for enhancing existing applications but for creating new products. The effect of surface wettability on overflow has not been paid enough attention in the past, however, as the development of construction techniques, especially 3D printing, of superwettable surfaces and the understanding of the dynamic interfacial wetting properties, the potential of surface wettability and structure on the overflow control has gained great recognition in the recent decade. On this basis, the feature article will outline the understanding evolution of the overflow phenomenon, and summarise the current research on the control of overflow behavior from aspects including the bioinspired idea, the fabrication of superwettable surfaces, the development of control techniques, the exploration of control mechanisms, etc., and provide an outlook for the accurate control of overflow by surfactant and additives, along with challenges and perspectives.

ABSTRACT

The lotus (Nelumbo Adans.) is an important aquatic plant with ornamental, medicinal and edible values and cultural connotations. It has single-, semi-double-, double- and thousand-petalled types of flower shape and is an ideal material for developmental research of flower doubling. The lotus is a basal eudicot species without a morphological difference between the sepals and petals and occupies a critical phylogenetic position in flowering plants. In order to investigate the genetic relationship between the sepals and petals in the lotus, the class E genes which affect sepal formation were focused on and analyzed. Here, SEPALLATA 1(NnSEP1) and its homologous genes AGAMOUS-LIKE MADS-BOXAGL9 (NnAGL9) and MADS-BOX TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR 6-like (NnMADS6-like) of the class E gene family were isolated from the flower buds of the Asian lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.). The protein structure, subcellular localization and expression patterns of these three genes were investigated. All three genes were verified to locate in the nucleus and had typical MADS-box characteristics. NnSEP1 and NnMADS6-like were specifically expressed in the sepals, while NnAGL9 was highly expressed in the petals, suggesting that different developmental mechanisms exist in the formation of the sepals and petals in the lotus. The significant functional differences between NnSEP1, NnMADS6-like and NnAGL9 were also confirmed by a yeast two-hybrid assay. These results expand our knowledge on the class E gene family in sepal formation and will benefit fundamental research on the development of floral organs in Nelumbo.

ABSTRACT

Nuclear paraspeckle assembly transcript 1 (NEAT1) has been found to be dysregulated and associated with clinical progression in various human cancers. The clinical and prognostic value of NEAT1 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) was still controversial. The aim of our study was to provide more sufficient evidence that NEAT1 expression is correlated with overall survival in patients with NPC. NEAT1 expression was detected in NPC tissue samples, and the relationship between NEAT1 expression and clinical parameters, including prognosis, was analyzed. The meta-analysis was performed to further assess the prognostic significance of NEAT1 expression in patients with NPC. In our study, we found that the levels of NEAT1 expression were increased in NPC clinical tissue specimens, and associated with advanced M classification and clinical stages. Moreover, the Kaplan-Meier analysis suggested that the levels of NEAT1 expression were negatively associated with the overall survival of patients with NPC. Furthermore, univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses showed that NEAT1 high-expression was an independent unfavorable prognostic factor in patients with NPC. Finally, we conducted a meta-analysis including 297 patients with NPC from the three studies, and found the pooled HR (95% confidence interval [CI]) was 1.64 (95% CI: 0.68-3.93) for the random effects model and 2.04 (95% CI: 1.42-2.95) for the fixed effect model. In conclusion, NEAT1 is a potential prognostic biomarker for NPC, but more studies are needed to further verify the prognostic value of NEAT1 in patients with NPC.

ABSTRACT

Our previous study showed that knockdown of high-mobility group A2 (HMGA2) could suppress nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cell migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process, and HMGA2 is a direct functional target of let-7 to regulate NPC cell migration, invasion, and EMT process. However, little is known about the clinical and prognostic significance of HMGA2 protein in NPC patients. The purpose of this study is to identify the clinical and prognostic roles of HMGA2 in NPC patients. We initially analyzed the microarray data and verified mRNA and protein levels of HMGA2 in NPC tissues. Immunohistochemical staining for HMGA2 protein was performed in 116 NPC patients. The associations between HMGA2 protein expression and clinicopathologic features and its prognostic significance were analyzed. In our results, we found mRNA and protein expressions of HMGA2 were upregulated in NPC tissues and cell lines. In 116 NPC tissue samples, we observed that HMGA2 protein overexpression was associated with clinical stage, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis. Moreover, NPC patients with high levels of HMGA2 protein expression had shorter overall survival in comparison to patients with low levels of HMGA2 protein. In multivariate analysis, HMGA2 protein overexpression was an unfavorable prognostic factor for NPC patients. In conclusion, HMGA2 is an important biomarker to predicting NPC patient's survival time.
