ABSTRACT

The earliest forests in the Devonian were reported from only four localities worldwide. The tree lycopsids, sometimes as the primary elements of Devonian forests, had evolved several types of rooting systems. In recent years, we found and excavated a Late Devonian (Famennian, 374-359 Ma) lycopsid forest from Zhejiang Province, China. The fossil forest occurs at seven locations of Lincheng Town of Changxing County and mainly consists of in situ small tree lycopsid (Heliodendron longshanense gen. et sp. nov.) stems usually connected to lobed cormose rhizomorphs. The four short lobes of each rhizomorph often branch once and bear roots arranged radially. Allometry is observed between the trunk diameter of Heliodendron and the length of its rhizomorphic lobes, indicating that the trunk develops later than the rhizomorph in tree lycopsid plants. The Devonian witnessed the transformation from clastic nonlycopsid dominated forests to Carboniferous swampy forests dominated by giant lycopsid trees. These trees form a multigenerational community, as shown by the in situ preserved stems at various levels within the same area due to frequent sedimentation events.

ABSTRACT

Electrons residing in a flat-band system can play a vital role in triggering spectacular phenomenology due to relatively large interactions and spontaneous breaking of different degeneracies. In this work, we demonstrate chirally twisted triple bilayer graphene, a new moiré structure formed by three pieces of helically stacked Bernal bilayer graphene, as a highly tunable flat-band system. In addition to the correlated insulators showing at integer moiré fillings, commonly attributed to interaction induced symmetry broken isospin flavors in graphene, we observe abundant insulating states at half-integer moiré fillings, suggesting a longer-range interaction and the formation of charge density wave insulators which spontaneously break the moiré translation symmetry. With weak out-of-plane magnetic field applied, as observed half-integer filling states are enhanced and more quarter-integer filling states appear, pointing toward further quadrupling moiré unit cells. The insulating states at fractional fillings combined with Hartree-Fock calculations demonstrate the observation of a new type of correlated charge density wave insulators in graphene and points to a new accessible twist manner engineering correlated moiré electronics.

ABSTRACT

Marine organic matter fuels the growth of microbial communities, shaping the composition of bacteria that specialize in its breakdown. However, responses of free-living (FL) and particle-associated (PA) bacterial communities to the changing pools of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) remained unclear. This study investigates the composition of size-fractionated bacterial communities, DOM and POM in coastal waters over a 22-day period that includes a diatom bloom. Co-occurrence analysis showed that the FL bacterial communities were significantly less stable than PA communities. During the diatom bloom, we observed a significant increase in DOM molecules, particularly those derived from amino acids and peptides. In contrast, the relative intensities of major POM molecule classes remained stable despite the algal bloom's influence. Our study revealed a strong negative correlation between bacterial alpha-diversity and the total amount of molecules in the organic matter pool. Similarly, bacterial community beta-diversity was found to be related to the composition of organic matter pool. However, the composition of organic matter was more strongly related to the composition of FL bacterial communities compared to PA communities. This suggests that FL bacteria exhibit greater variations in temporal dynamics and higher sensitivity to the specific structure of organic matter molecules.

ABSTRACT

The demand for accurate and efficient immunoassays calls for the development of precise, high-throughput analysis methods. This paper introduces a novel approach utilizing a weak measurement interface sensor for immunoassays, offering a solution for high throughput analysis. Weak measurement is a precise quantum measurement method that amplifies the weak value of a system in the weak interaction through appropriate pre- and post-selection states. To facilitate the simultaneous analysis of multiple samples, we have developed a chip with six flow channels capable of conducting six immunoassays concurrently. We can perform real-time immunoassay to determine the binding characteristics of spike protein and antibody through real-time analysis of the flow channel images and calculating the relative intensity. The proposed method boasts a simple structure, eliminating the need for intricate nano processes. The spike protein concentration and relative intensity curve were fitted using the Log-Log fitting regression equation, and R2 was 0.91. Utilizing a pre-transformation approach to account for slight variations in detection sensitivity across different flow channels, the present method achieves an impressive limit of detection(LOD) of 0.85 ng/mL for the SARS-CoV-2 the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike protein, with a system standard deviation of 5.61. Furthermore, this method has been successfully verified for monitoring molecular-specific binding processes and differentiating binding capacities.

ABSTRACT

NiII porphyrin (P) and NiII 5,15-diazaporphyrin (DAP) hybrid tapes were synthesized by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of meso- or ß-borylated P with ß-brominated DAP followed by intramolecular oxidative fusion reactions. Meso-ß doubly linked hybrid tapes were synthesized by oxidation of singly linked precursors with DDQ-FeCl3. Synthesis of triply linked hybrid tapes was achieved by oxidation with DDQ-FeCl3-AgOTf with suppression of peripheral ß-chlorination. In these tapes, DAP segments were present as a 20π-electronic unit, but their local antiaromatic contribution was trivial. Remarkably, these hybrid tapes were stable and exhibited extremely enhanced absorption bands in the NIR region and multiple reversible redox waves. A pentameric hybrid tape showed a remarkably sharp and red-shifted band at 1168 nm with ε = 5.75 × 105 M-1 cm-1. Singly linked P-DAP dyads were oxidized with DDQ-FeCl3 to give stable radicals, which were oxidized further to afford dimeric hybrid tapes possessing a nitrogen atom at the peripheral-side meso-position.

ABSTRACT

Heat stress induces mitochondrial dysfunction, thereby impeding skeletal muscle development and significantly impacting the economic efficiency of poultry production. This study aimed to investigate the effects of embryo thermal manipulation (TM, 41.5°C, 65% RH, 3 h/d during 16-18th embryonic age) on the mitochondrial function of the pectoralis major (PM) in broiler chickens exposed to thermoneutral (24 ± 1°C, 60% RH) or cyclic heat stress (35 ± 1°C, 60% RH, 12 h/d) from day 22 to 28, and to explore potential mechanisms involving transient receptor potential V2 (TRPV2). Additionally, in vitro experiments were conducted to assess the regulatory effects of TRPV2 pharmacological activation and inhibition on mitochondrial function in primary myotubes. The results revealed that TM had no discernible effect on the body weight and feed intake of broiler chickens under heat stress conditions (P > 0.05). However, it did delay the increase in rectal temperature and accelerate the decrease in serum T3 levels (P < 0.05). Furthermore, TM promoted the development of PM muscle fibers, significantly increasing myofiber diameter and cross-sectional area (P < 0.05). Under heat stress conditions, TM significantly upregulated the expression of mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) genes and TRPV2 in broiler PM muscle (P < 0.05), with a clear positive correlation observed between the two (P < 0.05). In vitro, pharmacological activation of TRPV2 not only increased its own expression but also enhanced mitochondrial ETC genes expression and oxidative phosphorylation function by upregulating intracellular calcium ion levels (P < 0.05). Conversely, TRPV2 inhibition had the opposite effect. Overall, this study underscores the potential of prenatal thermal manipulation in regulating postnatal broiler skeletal muscle development and mitochondrial function through the modulation of TRPV2 expression.

ABSTRACT

Succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHIs) as one of the fastest-growing fungicide categories for plant protection. In this study, a series of N'-phenyl pyridylcarbohydrazides as analogues of commercial SDHIs were designed and evaluated for inhibition activity on phytopathogenic fungi to search for potential novel SDHIs. The determination of antifungal activity in vitro and in vivo led to the discovery of a series of compounds with high activity and broad-spectrum property. Especially, N'-(4-fluorophenyl)picolinohydrazide (1c) and N'-(3,4-fluorophenyl)picolinohydrazide (1ae) showed 0.041-1.851 µg/mL of EC50 values on twelve fungi, superior to positive controls carbendazim and boscalid. In vivo activity, 1c at 50 µg/mL showed 61% of control efficacy at the post-treatment 9th day for the infection of P. piricola on apples, slightly smaller than 70% of carbendazim. In terms of action mechanism, 1c showed strong inhibition activity with IC50 of 0.107 µg/mL on SDH in Alternaria brassicae, superior to positive SDHI boscalid (IC50 0.182 µg/mL). Molecular docking indicated that 1c can well bind with the ubiquinone-binding region of SDH mainly by hydrogen bond, carbon hydrogen bond, π-alkyl, amide-π stacking, F-N and F-H interactions. Furthermore, scanning and transmission electron micrographs showed that 1c was able to obviously change the structure of mycelia and cell membrane. Fluorescence staining analysis showed that 1c could increase both the intracellular reactive oxygen species level and mitochondrial membrane potential. Finally, seed germination test, seedling growth test and cytotoxicity assay showed that 1c had very low toxicity to plant growth and mammalian cells. Thus, N'-phenyl pyridylcarbohydrazides especially 1c and 1ae can be considered promising fungicide alternatives for plant protection.

Due to the potential applications in next-generation micro/nano electronic devices and functional materials, magnetic germanium (Ge)-based clusters are receiving increasing attention. In this work, we reported the structures, electronic and magnetic properties of CrMnGen with sizes n = 3-20. Transition metals (TMs) of Cr and Mn tend to stay together and be surrounded by Ge atoms. Small sized clusters with n ≤ 8 prefer to adopt bipyramid-based structures as the motifs with the excess Ge atoms absorbed on the surface. Starting from n = 9, the structure with one TM atom interior appears and persists until n = 16, and for larger sizes n = 17-20, the two TM atoms are full-encapsulated by Ge atoms to form endohedral structures. The Hirshfeld population analyses show that Cr atom always acts as the electron donor, while Mn atom is always the acceptor except for sizes 3 and 6. The average binding energies of these clusters increase with cluster size n, sharing a very similar trend as that of CrMnSin (n = 4-20) clusters, which indicates that it is favorable to form large-sized clusters. CrMnGen (n = 6, 13, 16, 19, and 20) clusters prefer to exhibit ferromagnetic Cr-Mn coupling, while the remaining clusters are ferrimagnetic.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death globally. In addition, 20% to 40% of the patients with CHD have comorbid mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, affecting the prognosis and quality of life (QoL). Mobile health (mHealth) interventions have been developed and are widely used; however, the evidence for the effects of mHealth interventions on QoL, anxiety, and depression in patients with CHD is currently ambiguous. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to assess the effects of mHealth interventions on QoL, anxiety, and depression in patients with CHD. METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases from inception to August 12, 2023. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials that involved patients with CHD who received mHealth interventions and that reported on QoL, anxiety, or depression outcomes. We used the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials to evaluate the risk of bias in the studies, ensuring a rigorous and methodologically sound analysis. Review Manager (desktop version 5.4; The Cochrane Collaboration) and Stata MP (version 17.0; StataCorp LLC) were used to conduct the meta-analysis. The effect size was calculated using the standardized mean difference (SMD) and its 95% CI. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 23 studies (5406 participants in total) and showed that mHealth interventions significantly improved QoL in patients with CHD (SMD 0.49, 95% CI 0.25-0.72; Z=4.07; P<.001) as well as relieved their anxiety (SMD -0.46, 95% CI -0.83 to -0.08; Z=2.38; P=.02) and depression (SMD -0.34, 95% CI -0.56 to -0.12; Z=3.00; P=.003) compared to usual care. The subgroup analyses indicated a significant effect favoring the mHealth intervention on reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms compared to usual care, especially when (1) the intervention duration was ≥6 months (P=.04 and P=.001), (2) the mHealth intervention was a simple one (only 1 mHealth intervention was used) (P=.01 and P<.001), (3) it was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic (P=.04 and P=.01), (4) it was implemented in low- or middle-income countries (P=.01 and P=.02), (5) the intervention focused on mental health (P=.01 and P=.007), and (6) adherence rates were high (≥90%; P=.03 and P=.002). In addition, comparing mHealth interventions to usual care, there was an improvement in QoL when (1) the mHealth intervention was a simple one (P<.001), (2) it was implemented in low- or middle-income countries (P<.001), and (3) the intervention focused on mental health (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of the existing evidence, mHealth interventions might be effective in improving QoL and reducing anxiety and depression in patients with CHD. However, large sample, high-quality, and rigorously designed randomized controlled trials are needed to provide further evidence. ABSTRACT

Solid solution of metal-doped oxide has been widely used in material industry and catalysis process. Its performance is highly correlated with the distribution of doped ions. Due to the complex distribution of doped ions in solid solution and its variation with temperatures, to obtain the microstructures of metal-doped ions in solid solution remains a substantial challenge. Taken Ce1-xZrxO2 as a model, the global structure searching, structures proportion with temperature determined by Boltzmann distribution, and the weighted simulation Raman spectra were integrated to explore the microstructures of metal-doped solid solution oxides. It was further verified by application into rutile and anatase TiO2 mixture, indicating that the present method is feasible to deduce the microstructure of metal composite oxides. We anticipate that it provides a powerful solution to explore microstructures of solid solution and complex metal oxides.

BACKGROUND: To elucidate the mechanism of dysfunction of tolerogenic dendritic cells (DCs) is of significance. Telomerase involves the regulation of the cell fate and activities. The objective of this study is to investigate the role of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) in regulating the tolerogenic feature of DCs. METHODS: The telomerase was assessed in DCs, which were collected from patients with allergic rhinitis (AR), healthy control (HC) subjects, and mice. RNAs were extracted from DCs, and analyzed by RNA sequencing (RNAseq), real-time quantitative RT-PCR, and Western blotting. RESULTS: The results showed that expression of TERT was higher in peripheral DCs of AR patients. The expression of IL10 in DCs was negatively correlated with the levels of TERT expression. Importantly, the levels of TERT mRNA in DCs were associated with the AR response in patients with AR. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress promoted the expression of Tert in DCs. Sensitization with the ovalbumin-aluminum hydroxide protocol increased the expression of Tert in DCs by exacerbating ER stress. TERT interacting with c-Maf (the transcription factor of IL-10) inducing protein (CMIP) in DCs resulted in CMIP ubiquitination and degradation, and thus, suppressed the production of IL-10. Inhibition of Tert in DCs mitigated experimental AR. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated amounts of TERT were detected in DCs of patients with AR. The tolerogenic feature of DCs was impacted by TERT. Inhibited TERT attenuated experimental AR.

ABSTRACT

Exploration of expanded porphyrins with unprecedented reactivities has remained important. Here [22]pentaphyrins(2.0.1.1.0) were synthesized as a constitutional isomer of sapphyrin by acid-catalyzed cyclization of 1,14-dibromo-5,10-diaryltripyrrin with 1,2-di(pyrro-2-ly)ethenes. These pentaphyrins display roughly planar structures and varying aromaticities depending upon the vinylene structures. The 19,20-ditolyl pentaphyrin gave an N-fused product and an unprecedented pyrrole-rearranged product, depending upon the oxidation conditions. Remarkably, upon the metalation with CuCl, the N-fused product and the pyrrole-rearranged product afforded an inner ß-ß coupled face-to-face CuII complex dimer and an outer ß-ß coupled lateral CuII complex dimer, respectively, in fairly good yields. Further, [22]pentaphyrin(2.0.1.1.0) fused with a NiII porphyrin was effectively dimerized upon oxidation with MnO2 to give a 16-16' directly linked dl-dimer.

ABSTRACT

Forests appeared during the Middle to Late Devonian, but Devonian forests and their compositions are still rarely known. Xinhang forest was reported as the largest Devonian forest, with lycopsid trees of Guangdedendron micrum Wang et al. A fern-like plant Xinhangia spina Yang and Wang with shoots and anatomy, was previously described from this forest, but its habit and ecology remain unclear. From Xinhang forest, we now report more specimens of fern-like plants including X. spina and some unnamed plants in several beds. Prominent adventitious roots, spines and secondary xylem indicate that the stems of X. spina are largely procumbent to function as anchorage, absorption and support. Other fern-like plants with distinct roots or multiple slender branches also suggest procumbent habits. Xinhang forest is thus reconsidered as multispecific with a canopy of lycopsid trees and understory of diverse fern-like plants, which are adapted to the disturbed coastal environment. The composition of Xinhang forest may indicate a structural transition of the early forests' dominator from fern-like plants to lycopsids.

ABSTRACT

Double-layer quantum systems are promising platforms for realizing novel quantum phases. Here, we report a study of quantum oscillations (QOs) in a weakly coupled double-layer system composed of a large-angle twisted-double-bilayer graphene (TDBG). We quantify the interlayer coupling strength by measuring the interlayer capacitance from the QOs pattern at low temperatures, revealing electron-hole asymmetry. At high temperatures when SdHOs are thermally smeared, we observe resistance peaks when Landau levels (LLs) from two moiré minivalleys are aligned, regardless of carrier density; eventually, it results in a 2-fold increase of oscillating frequency in D, serving as compelling evidence of the magneto-intersub-band oscillations (MISOs) in double-layer systems. The temperature dependence of MISOs suggests that electron-electron interactions play a crucial role and the scattering times obtained from MISO thermal damping are correlated with the interlayer coupling strength. Our study reveals intriguing interplays among Landau quantization, moiré band structure, and scatterings.

Chirality, a fundamental property of matter, is often overlooked in the studies of marine organic matter cycles. Dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS), a globally abundant organosulfur compound, serves as an ecologically important currency for nutrient and energy transfer from phytoplankton to bacteria in the ocean. However, the chirality of DHPS in nature and its transformation remain unclear. Here, we developed a novel approach using chiral phosphorus-reagent labeling to separate DHPS enantiomers. Our findings demonstrated that at least one enantiomer of DHPS is present in marine diatoms and coccolithophores, and that both enantiomers are widespread in marine environments. A novel chiral-selective DHPS catabolic pathway was identified in marine Roseobacteraceae strains, where HpsO and HpsP dehydrogenases at the gateway to DHPS catabolism act specifically on R-DHPS and S-DHPS, respectively. R-DHPS is also a substrate for the dehydrogenase HpsN. All three dehydrogenases generate stable hydrogen bonds between the chirality-center hydroxyls of DHPS and highly conserved residues, and HpsP also form coordinate-covalent bonds between the chirality-center hydroxyls and Zn2+, which determines the mechanistic basis of strict stereoselectivity. We further illustrated the role of enzymatic promiscuity in the evolution of DHPS metabolism in Roseobacteraceae and SAR11. This study provides the first evidence of chirality's involvement in phytoplankton-bacteria metabolic currencies, opening a new avenue for understanding the ocean organosulfur cycle.

ABSTRACT

Stark effect, the electric-field analogue of magnetic Zeeman effect, is one of the celebrated phenomena in modern physics and appealing for emergent applications in electronics, optoelectronics, as well as quantum technologies. While in condensed matter it has prospered only for excitons, whether other collective excitations can display Stark effect remains elusive. Here, we report the observation of phonon Stark effect in a two-dimensional quantum system of bilayer 2H-MoS2. The longitudinal acoustic phonon red-shifts linearly with applied electric fields and can be tuned over ~1 THz, evidencing giant Stark effect of phonons. Together with many-body ab initio calculations, we uncover that the observed phonon Stark effect originates fundamentally from the strong coupling between phonons and interlayer excitons (IXs). In addition, IX-mediated electro-phonon intensity modulation up to ~1200% is discovered for infrared-active phonon A2u. Our results unveil the exotic phonon Stark effect and effective phonon engineering by IX-mediated mechanism, promising for a plethora of exciting many-body physics and potential technological innovations.

ABSTRACT

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the most common causative agent of urinary tract infection (UTI). UPEC invades bladder epithelial cells (BECs) via fusiform vesicles, escapes into the cytosol, and establishes biofilm-like intracellular bacterial communities (IBCs). Nucleoside-diphosphate kinase (NDK) is secreted by pathogenic bacteria to enhance virulence. However, whether NDK is involved in UPEC pathogenesis remains unclear. Here, we find that the lack of ndk impairs the colonization of UPEC CFT073 in mouse bladders and kidneys owing to the impaired ability of UPEC to form IBCs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that NDK inhibits caspase-1-dependent pyroptosis by consuming extracellular ATP, preventing superficial BEC exfoliation, and promoting IBC formation. UPEC utilizes the reactive oxygen species (ROS) sensor OxyR to indirectly activate the regulator integration host factor, which then directly activates ndk expression in response to intracellular ROS. Here, we reveal a signaling transduction pathway that UPEC employs to inhibit superficial BEC exfoliation, thus facilitating acute UTI.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Our study aims to investigate the impact of B-mode ultrasound (B-US) imaging, color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI), strain elastography (SE), and patient age on the prediction of molecular subtypes in breast lesions. METHODS: Totally 2272 multimodal ultrasound imaging was collected from 198 patients. The ResNet-18 network was employed to predict four molecular subtypes from B-US imaging, CDFI, and SE of patients with different ages. All the images were split into training and testing datasets by the ratio of 80%:20%. The predictive performance on testing dataset was evaluated through 5 metrics including mean accuracy, precision, recall, F1-scores, and confusion matrix. RESULTS: Based on B-US imaging, the test mean accuracy is 74.50%, the precision is 74.84%, the recall is 72.48%, and the F1-scores is 0.73. By combining B-US imaging with CDFI, the results were increased to 85.41%, 85.03%, 85.05%, and 0.84, respectively. With the integration of B-US imaging and SE, the results were changed to 75.64%, 74.69%, 73.86%, and 0.74, respectively. Using images from patients under 40 years old, the results were 90.48%, 90.88%, 88.47%, and 0.89. When images from patients who are above 40 years old, they were changed to 81.96%, 83.12%, 80.5%, and 0.81, respectively. CONCLUSION: Multimodal ultrasound imaging can be used to accurately predict the molecular subtypes of breast lesions. In addition to B-US imaging, CDFI rather than SE contribute further to improve predictive performance. The predictive performance is notably better for patients under 40 years old compared with those who are 40 years old and above.

ABSTRACT

This systematic review aims to identify the association between prenatal exposure to air pollutants and allergic diseases in children, focusing on specific pollutants, timing of exposure, and associated diseases. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for English articles until May 1, 2023, examining maternal exposure to outdoor air pollutants (PM1, PM2.5, PM10, NO, NO2, SO2, CO, and O3) during pregnancy and child allergic diseases (atopic dermatitis (AD), food allergy (FA), asthma (AT) and allergic rhinitis (AR)/hay fever (HF)). The final 38 eligible studies were included in the meta-analysis. Exposure to PM2.5 and NO2 during pregnancy was associated with the risk of childhood AD, with pooled ORs of 1.34 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10-1.63) and 1.10 (95%CI, 1.05-1.15) per 10 µg/m3 increase, respectively. Maternal exposure to PM1, PM2.5, and NO2 with a 10 µg/m3 increase posed a risk for AT, with pooled ORs of 1.34 (95%CI, 1.17-1.54), 1.11 (95%CI, 1.05-1.18), and 1.07 (95%CI, 1.02-1.12), respectively. An increased risk of HF was observed for PM2.5 and NO2 with a 10 µg/m3 increase, with ORs of 1.36 (95%CI, 1.17-1.58) and 1.26 (95%CI, 1.08-1.48), respectively. Traffic-related air pollutants (TRAP), particularly PM2.5 and NO2, throughout pregnancy, pose a pervasive risk for childhood allergies. Different pollutants may induce diverse allergic diseases in children across varying perinatal periods. AT is more likely to be induced by outdoor air pollutants as a health outcome. More research is needed to explore links between air pollution and airway-derived food allergies.

ABSTRACT

The trend toward further miniaturization of micronano antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronic devices has led to a strong demand for low-dimensional materials. The assembly of AFM clusters to produce such materials is a potential pathway that promotes studies on such clusters. In this work, we report on the discovery of the AFM Cr2Snx (x = 3-20) clusters with a stepwise growth at the density functional theory (DFT) level. In comparison, the two Cr atoms tend to stay together and be buried by Sn atoms, forming endohedral structures with one Cr atom encapsulated at size 9 and finally forming a full-encapsulated structure at size 17. Each successive cluster size is composed of its predecessor with an extra Sn atom adsorbed onto the face, giving evidence of stepwise growth. All these Cr2Snx (x = 3-20) clusters are antiferromagnets, except for the triplet-state ferrimagnetic Cr2Sn11, and all their singly negatively and positively charged ions are ferromagnets. The found stable Cr2Sn17 cluster can dimerize, yielding dimers and trimers without noticeably distorting the geometrical structure and magnetic properties of each of its constituent cluster monomers, making it possible as a building block for AFM materials.
