ABSTRACT

The management of 124 patient diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the stomach from 1971 to 1990 was reviewed. Early gastric cancer increased from 0% to 9% of the cases between the first and last quarter of the study. Proximal gastric cancer similarly increased from 8% in the first decade to 29% of all cases diagnosed during the second decade of the study. Follow-up information was available for all patients. Nineteen patients (15%) had no operation and two survived more than 2 years. Twelve patients had a surgical biopsy only and four had a palliative bypass; none survived 2 years. Eighty-six patients (69%) had a surgical resection with a 30-day operative mortality of 8% and a 5-year survival of 17%. Prognosis was significantly better for patients with T-1 and T-2 tumors and for those with distal cancers. Patients with early gastric cancer had 67% 5-year survival. These data should encourage efforts to improve the diagnosis of early gastric cancer.

ABSTRACT

A 68-year-old woman developed a clinical picture of a painful subacute polyradiculoneuropathy. Her condition improved dramatically after treatment with plasmapheresis. A few months later she was found to have serologic evidence for the human immunodeficiency virus. This infection was traced to a contaminated transfusion received three years earlier. Postmortem studies disclosed pathology affecting mainly dorsal roots.

ABSTRACT

Two human colon cancer cell lines grown in tissue culture were found to have significantly different Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxation times of water protons in the fresh, intact state and after fragmentation into subcellular fractions. Differences in the protein composition of the subcellular fractions were also demonstrated by protein analysis and gel chromatography. In further studies, these cell lines may be useful to investigate the biochemical basis for the disparity in relaxation times of water protons between tissues which constitutes the basis for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) tissue contrast.

ABSTRACT

We have reviewed the clinical syndrome of acute cerebellar hemorrhage and have presented five cases of cerebellar hemorrhage of various types in which CT scanning was a significant aid in management. Recognizing the clinical syndrome, establishing the diagnosis rapidly by CT scanning, and avoiding potentially lethal diagnostic procedures, are all of crucial importance in expediting surgical treatment and improving the morbidity and mortality associated with this entity.
