ABSTRACT

The incidence of superficial infections in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is increasing in Yaounde. To determine the prevalence of superficial mycoses in HIV-positive subjects, a study was carried out in different hospital settings in Yaounde over a period of 18 months. Clinical observations were followed by the culture of samples on Sabouraud's glucose agar. Of the 148 HIVab-positive patients examined, 79 (44 males and 35 females) had at least one superficial mycosis (53%). The clinical presentations and the causative organisms did not differ from those found in immunocompetent individuals. The main lesions were oral candidiasis (77%), tinea corporis (21%), tinea versicolor (15%), tinea pedis (13%) and tinea inguium (12%). Trichophyton rubrum and Candida albicans were the organisms most commonly isolated. These results indicate the benefit of studying superficial mycoses for optimal management of HIV patients.

ABSTRACT

The authors report the results of a six-month evaluation of otomycoses in the ENT Department of CHU and the Central Hospital of Yaoundé. We examined 2 592 patients of both sexes presenting with ear affections. The prevalence of Otomycoses is 6,09%. This is an adult problem with both sexes equally affected. Clinically the main symptoms were burning sensation in the ears, pruritus, sensation of fullness in the ear, hypoacousia and otorrhea. Clinical lesions are of many types including myringitis, tympanic perforation and otitis externa. The fungi responsible for these affections are mainly Aspergillus fumigatus (56,16%) for the Aaspergillus and Candida albicans (48,38%) for yeasts. The other species are Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, C. Krusei, C. pseudotropicalis, C. Tropicalis, Geotrichum candium and Torulopsis glabrata.

ABSTRACT

The authors present five new cases of entomophthoromycosis observed during three years of histopathology in Cameroon. Three classic cases of rhinoentomophthoromycosis. In one case, Conidiobolus coronatus was isolated. Two cases of subcutaneous entomophthoromycosis, without isolation of the germ. In one observation, the clinical and histological aspect suggested mucormycosis post entomophthoromycosis. An immunofluorescence technique showed the Basidiobolus haptosporus to be the real cause.

ABSTRACT

In this preliminary study, we discuss 9 cases of Candidosis diagnosed during a 6 month period in 32 AIDS patients hospitalized in three health Centers in Yaoundé. Most of the patients presented with buccal candidosis and/or dysphagia. Of the 18 strains grown, 17 (94%) are Candida albicans.
