ABSTRACT

To evaluate the biomass components of massai grass subjected to nitrogen (N) fertilization levels (control - 0; 400; 800 and 1200 kg ha-1 year-1 of N) and under rotational stocking with sheep, this study was undertaken using a completely randomized design with measurements repeated in time. A quadratic response was observed reaching maximum values as the levels of nitrogen fertilization increased for green forage biomass, green leaf biomass, green stem biomass (5,172.9; 4,146.3; 1,033.9 kg ha-1 cycle-1, respectively), forage total density (179.1 kg ha-1 cm-1), canopy height (36.8 cm) and live material/dead material ratio (4.0) at levels 896; 934; 797; 879.2; 751.4 and 1,161 kg ha-1 year-1 of N, respectively. For all variables, oscillation was observed between the grazing cycles studied. Nitrogen fertilization has a positive response on the biomass components and canopy structure of massai grass.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar os componentes da biomassa do capim-massai sob lotação rotativa com ovinos e adubado com doses de nitrogênio (controle - 0; 400; 800 e 1200 kg de N ha -1 ano -1 ), em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com medidas repetidas no tempo. Constatou-se resposta quadrática, alcançando valores máximos com o incremento das doses de nitrogênio para as produções de biomassa de forragem verde, de lâmina foliar verde, de colmo verde (5172,9; 4146,3; 1033,9 kg ha -1 ciclo -1 , respectivamente) e para a densidade total de forragem (179,1 kg ha -1 cm -1 ), altura do dossel (36,8 cm) e relação material vivo/material morto (4,0) nas doses 896; 934; 797; 879,2; 751,4 e 1161 kg ha -1 ano -1 de N, respectivamente. Para todas as variáveis, verificou-se oscilação entre os ciclos de pastejo estudados. A adubação nitrogenada exerce respostas positivas sobre os componentes da biomassa e a estrutura do dossel do capim-massai.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This article has as its objective the study of the weight of the newly born, the age group of the mother and the kind of deliveries which took place in the maternity wards in Rio Branco--Acre Federal State--Brazil, in the period between 1994 and 1996. It was observed that 73.8% of the deliveries were regular and 25.5% were cesareans. Adolescents, between 10 to 14 years old represented 5.4% of the total of the deliveries. In relation to the weight of the newly born, 84.6% met the expectations, 7.4% were underweight and 6.6% were overweight. The present study also found that the data related to weight, age and gender was ignored in many cases, which shows flaws on the registration system of the institutions analyzed. As a conclusion, we would like to stress the importance of prenatal assistance both for the mother and the child, and also the effort on the part of the Maternity and Nursing management regarding the production and analysis of data.

ABSTRACT

Bioactivity-guided fractionation of several bioactive extracts obtained from Cerrado and Atlantic Forest plant species led to the isolation of potent DNA-damaging piperidine 1-5 and guanidine alkaloids 6-9 from Cassia leptophylla and Pterogyne nitens respectively, two common Leguminosae from Atlantic Forest. By means of biotechnological approach on Maytenus aquifolium, a species from Cerrado, moderate DNA-damaging sesquiterpene pyridine alkaloid 10-11 was isolated. Bioassay-guided fractionation on Casearia sylvestris, a medicinal plant species found in Cerrado and Atlantic Forest, led to the isolation of clerodane diterpenes 12-13 which showed effect on DNA. In addition, we have reported several interesting potent antifungal iridoids: 1 beta-hydroxy-dihydrocornin (14), 1 alpha-hydroxy-dihydrocornin (15), alpha-gardiol (16), beta-gardiol (17), plumericin (18), isoplumericin (19), 11-O-trans-caffeoylteucrein (20); ester derivative: 2-methyl-4-hydroxy-butyl-caffeoate (21), amide N-[7-(3',4'-methylenedioxyphenyl)-2Z, 4Z-heptadienoyl] pyrrolidine (22) and triterpene viburgenin (23).

ABSTRACT

Phytochemical investigation of Chioccoca alba afforded three new iridoids, alboside I, alboside II and alboside III, and a new seco-iridoid alboside V. Alboside IV showed moderate activity towards the DNA repair-deficient mutant RS321 of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The structural elucidation of the new compounds was performed by ES-MS and by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic methods.

ABSTRACT

A novel triterpene, viburgenin (1), has been isolated from an extract of the ripe fruit rinds of Rudgea viburnioides, together with the known saponins, arjunglucoside I and trachelosperosides B-1 and E-1, and the triterpenes trachelosperogenin B (2) and arjungenin. Compound 2 was previously obtained as a product from enzymatic hydrolysis, and it is reported for the first time as a natural product. The structure of compound 1 was determined as 2alpha,3beta, 19alpha,23,24-pentahydroxyurs-12-ene by extensive use of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic methods. Compound 1 exhibited moderate antifungal activity against Cladosporium cladosporioides.

ABSTRACT

We have investigated the time course of the changes in protein metabolism in skeletal muscle and liver in mice during the progression of growth of an Ehrlich ascites tumour. The rate of protein synthesis in muscle begins to fall very rapidly, and the decrease is clearly established by the time the tumour first becomes visible at 4 days after implantation of the cells. Liver protein synthesis increases substantially, and protein breakdown in muscle increases, but the onset of both these changes occurs later than the fall in muscle protein synthesis. A decrease in food intake in these animals occurs very rapidly after introduction of the cells. The fractional rate of protein synthesis in the tumour cells falls from 73%/day at 5 days to 26%/day at 12 days after injection, but on an absolute basis the rate of protein synthesis in the tumour at 5 days of growth is very small compared with that in muscle and liver. These results are consistent with the notion that the initial effects on muscle protein synthesis and food intake are brought about by humoral factors rather than as direct consequences of the metabolic demands of the growing tumour.
