ABSTRACT

Children/adolescents with cancer can develop adverse effects impacting gross motor function. There is a lack of gross motor function assessment tools that have been validated for this population. The aim of this multicenter cross-sectional study was to preliminary validate the 88-item Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM-88) for use in children/adolescents with cancer, exploring internal consistency and floor/ceiling effect. Inclusion criteria regarded children/adolescents diagnosed with cancer on treatment or <1 year off therapy. The internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's α, and the floor-ceiling effects were calculated through percentage. This study involved 217 participants with heterogeneous neoplasm conditions. Internal consistency was good, with a Cronbach's α of 0.989. Floor-ceiling effect analysis reveals that several items obtained a dichotomous scoring distribution in each of the five sub-scales of the GMFM-88. This can be explained by the heterogeneous clinical characteristics of the target population. The preliminary validation of GMFM-88 in a group of children/adolescents affected by cancer suggests that some items are not able to discriminate between different gross motor function levels, and therefore it does not represent an informative tool to measure gross motor function in children with cancer. Future research is needed to define which ones could be more useful for clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the most effective method for mechanical inter-dental plaque removal between inter-dental brushes (IDB) and dental floss (DF), in addition to toothbrushing in patients affected by peri-implant mucositis (PIM); to identify possible factors related to the patient or to the single implant-supported element that could influence plaque accumulation and inflammation of peri-implant tissues. METHODS: Forty patients with PIM were recruited. They were randomly assigned to two different groups depending on inter-dental device used (IDB or DF). At baseline (T0), interproximal area (IA), interproximal emergence angle of the implant crown (A°) and manual dexterity (evaluated with Purdue Pegboard) have been recorded. At 14 days (T1), the inter-dental cleaning devices have been inverted between groups. After 14 days (T2), the Plaque Index (PI) and Gingival Index (GI) have been recorded. A questionnaire has been submitted to a patient for the analysis of preferences at T0, T1 and T2. RESULTS: Both inter-dental cleaning devices were effective in reducing PI and GI in the inter-dental area after 14 days of use. GI reduction was influenced by manual dexterity of the dominant hand. No significant differences were found for PI and GI at the variation of IA and A°. CONCLUSION: IDB was the most effective method for inter-dental plaque removal in all subjects regardless of their manual dexterity. DF seems to be more effective than IDB only in subjects with good dexterity.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCCIÓN: Existe subdiagnóstico del déficit grave de alfa-1 antitripsina (DAAT) a pesar de la recomendación de realizar la determinación de AAT en pacientes con enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica (EPOC). OBJETIVO: Estimar la prevalencia de DAAT en pacientes con EPOC ajustada a la población del estudio de prevalencia de EPOC en la Argentina (EPOC.AR). MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Estudio prospectivo multicéntrico de corte transversal en población ≥ 30 años de edad con diagnóstico de EPOC. Cuantificación de AAT por toma de sangre capilar en gota seca y posterior genotipificación en aquellos sujetos con concentraciones < 1,5 mg/dl en sangre capilar en gota seca (< 80 mg/dl sérica). Se definió DAAT como la detección de las variantes ZZ o SZ por genotipificación. Se tomó la población del estudio EPOC.AR para calcular la prevalencia local ajustada. RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron 3.254 pacientes (544 con AAT < 80 mg/dl) con diagnóstico espirométrico de EPOC. La prevalencia de DAAT en la población total del estudio fue de 1,29% (IC 95% 0,93-1,74), de los cuales un 0,92% (IC 95% 0,62-1,31) fueron Pi*ZZ y un 0,37% (IC 95% 0,19-0,64) Pi*SZ. La prevalencia ajustada de DAAT en pacientes con EPOC (≥ 40 años) fue de 0,83% (IC 95% 0,23-2,08). Encontramos asociación negativa de DAAT con la edad (OR 0,94; IC 95% 0,90-0,98; p = 0,006), el consumo de tabaco (OR 0,98; IC 95% 0,96-0,99; p = 0,009) y el VEF1% (OR 0,95; IC 95% 0,91-0,99; p = 0,015). CONCLUSIONES: Se estima que la prevalencia de DAAT en la población adulta con EPOC en Argentina es del 0,83%, lo cual podría representar 17.000 casos en nuestro país

BACKGROUND: The objective was to evaluate the precision of kappa and lambda free light chains (KFLC and LFLC) in CSF for the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and prognosis of clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). METHODS: CSF and serum samples from CIS, MS and other neurological non-MS disease were collected between 2015 and 2017. FLC concentrations were measured using immunoassay Freelite™. Results were correlated with the patients' diagnoses and ROC curve analysis was used to determine accuracy. In CIS patients, analysis of FLC were compared in CIS converters vs. non-converter during follow-up. RESULTS: In the MS group (n = 41), the optimal cut-off for KFLC determined was 7 mg/L, with a diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 95% and 97%, respectively. The optimal cut-off for LFLC was 0.7 mg/L, with a diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 71% and 81%, respectively. 36 CIS patients were included; mean follow-up time was 28 ± 9 months, and 22 (61.1%) patients converted to MS. The median concentration of CSF K and LFLCs at CIS diagnosis was slightly higher in CIS-converters compared to non-converters, but this did not reach statistical significance (KFLC: median 7 ± 5.3 mg/L vs. 5 ± 2.3 mg/L, p = 0.11; LFLC 0.7 ± 0.33 mg/L vs. 0.5 ± 0.23 mg/L p = 0.16). A strong correlation was observed between the concentration of K and L FLCs at diagnosis and the change in PBVC during follow-up (r = 0.72 and r = 0.65, respectively). CONCLUSION: KFLCs have a high sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of MS. FLC concentrations at CIS diagnosis were not significantly higher in CIS-converters.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Many different types of honey are available in the Brazilian market. They vary in color, flavor, smell, thereby increasing interest in honey characterization relating to botanical origin. A total of 155 honey samples belonging to Brazilian flora were examined on the pollen analysis; sampling is made in a span of one year. The preparation followed melisso palynological analysis based on the specific botanical variety. The pollen spectra revealed 60 pollen types belonging to 27 plant families and Myrtaceae, Fabaceae and Asteraceae were the dominant plant families. Few pollen types were found in most samples of honey. The families that showed major richness of pollen types were Fabaceae and Asteraceae. Only six floral sources of pollen plants and three floral sources of nectar plants appeared in the category of predominant pollen. The unifloral honeys were slightly more frequent than polyfloral, and wild floral species dominated most of the honey samples. These floral sources, even in minor parts in the honeys samples, are also part of the biological feature of theses honeys. The honeys from natural fields cannot be completely accounted by the term unifloral honeys.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have recently drawn attention to the analysis of gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and peri-implant sulcus fluid (PISF) for the implementation of the diagnosis of periodontal and peri-implant disease. Nevertheless, the measurements of volume and biomarkers concentration can be critically biased when data collected from studies with parallel group design are compared, given the technical difficulties, methodological variables, as well as the variability of crevicular fluid characteristics among different individuals. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to assess the GCF and PISF volumes in healthy and diseased sites belonging to the same patient. METHOD: Ten patients presenting a periodontally healthy tooth, a tooth with periodontitis, an implant with healthy peri-implant tissues and an implant with peri-implantitis were enrolled. Samples of GCF and PISF were collected from each site of interest and their volume measured with a Periotron 8000 device. Non-parametric statistical analysis was performed to test the significance of the differences in GCF and PISF volumes between i) sites of teeth and dental implants with the same condition of health or disease and ii) healthy and diseased sites of both teeth and dental implants subgroups. The correlation between probing pocket depth (PPD) and fluid production was also tested (p<0.05). RESULTS: Healthy periodontal and peri-implant tissues produced comparable amounts of fluid that was significantly lower than in diseased sites (p<0.05). In the presence of diagnosed disease, the volumes of GCF and PISF were similar, too. The correlation between PPD and fluid production was significant only in healthy sites (PPD/GCF, ρ=0.890, p<0.001; PPD/PISF, ρ=0.810; p<0.005). CONCLUSION: The periodontal and peri-implant tissues behaved similarly in terms of fluid production in condition of both health and active disease.

Pollen is used in the human diet as a food supplement because of its high nutritional value; however, this product is prone to fungal contamination that could potentially generate toxins that are harmful to human health. This study aimed to verify the floral diversity of commercial brands of bee pollen and their mycotoxicological safety for human consumption. A total of 27 bee pollen samples were analyzed; these samples represented commercial brands, either showing an inspection seal or not, marketed in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The analyzed parameters included floral diversity through palynological analysis, water activity, fungal counts, identification and toxigenic profiles. The palynological analysis identified nine plant families, of which the Asteraceae was predominant. Analysis of hygienic quality based on fungal load showed that 92% of samples were reproved according to the commercial, sanitary, and food safety quality indicators. Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium were the most common genera. Toxigenic evaluation showed that 25% of the A. flavus strains produced aflatoxins. The high rate of contamination of products bearing an inspection seal emphasizes the need to monitor the entire procedure of bee pollen production, as well as to revise the current legislation to ensure safe commercialization of this product.

ABSTRACT

The stingless bees are important flowers visitors of several plant species, due to their feeding habits and foraging behavior, constituting an important group to maintain biodiversity and the dynamics of tropical communities. Among stingless bees, Tetragonisca angustula is widely distributed in tropical habitats, and has been considered an important pollinator of different plant families. To support a rational economic use of this group, there is a need to characterize the plant species that represent important sources as part of their diet, as preferred, alternative or casual food sources. The aim of this survey was to distinguish the plant species that T. angustula visited most often. The study was undertaken in four regions of the Atlantic Rainforest in Rio de Janeiro state (Brazil) over a year from March 2008 to February 2009. For this, we collected bees, flowering plants and bee pollen loads from the four sites, and evaluated pollen morphology in the laboratory. Field observations showed the presence of plants belonging to ten different families and pollen loads showed the presence of pollen types belonging to 26 plant families. There were strong differences between pollen types, especially regarding pollen grain shape. The present survey suggests a high value of these plant species as trophic resources for the T. angustula in the understory of Atlantic Rainforest. Changes in these fragments of this forest may compromise the availability of resources for Tetragonisca angustula species and other stingless bees.


Para apoyar el uso racional de las abejas sin aguijón, es necesario conocer las especies de plantas que actúan como fuentes de recursos para estas abejas en su ambiente natural. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar las especies de plantas que fueron visitadas con mayor frecuencia por abejas Tetragonisca angustula y describir los granos de polen de estas plantas. El estudio se realizó en la Mata Atlántica, donde se recogieron las abejas, las plantas con flores y el polen de las cargas corbiculares de las abejas obreras. La observación de campo mostró la presencia de plantas pertenecientes a diez familias y las cargas de polen mostraron la presencia de tipos de polen pertenecientes a 26 familias botánicas. Hubo grandes diferencias entre los tipos de polen, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta la ornamentación de los granos de polen. Este estudio sugiere un alto valor de estas especies de plantas como recursos tróficos para las abejas jataí en el sub-bosque de la Mata Atlántica. Las alteraciones de los fragmentos de bosque pueden afectar la disponibilidad de recursos para Tetragonisca angustula y otras abejas sin aguijón y ser un gran obstáculo para la su crianza sostenible.

UNLABELLED: Various bioactive chemical constituents were quantified for 21 honey samples obtained at Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, Brazil. To evaluate their antioxidant activity, 3 different methods were used: the ferric reducing antioxidant power, the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity, and the 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazolin)-6-sulfonate (ABTS) assays. Correlations between the parameters were statistically significant (-0.6684 ≤ r ≤-0.8410, P < 0.05). Principal component analysis showed that honey samples from the same floral origins had more similar profiles, which made it possible to group the eucalyptus, morrão de candeia, and cambara honey samples in 3 distinct areas, while cluster analysis could separate the artificial honey from the floral honeys. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This research might aid in the discrimination of honey floral origin, by using simple analytical methods in association with multivariate analysis, which could also show a great difference among floral honeys and artificial honey, indicating a possible way to help with the identification of artificial honeys.

ABSTRACT

O estudo foi realizado bimestralmente entre agosto de 2006 e maio de 2007 na Região Sul Fluminense do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. As armadilhas, modelo Carvalho-47, foram adaptadas e posteriormente montadas às 9 horas e retiradas 48 horas depois. Em cada ponto de coleta foram montadas 4 armadilhas, totalizando 20 armadilhas em toda a trilha. Durante o experimento, oito operárias de Lestrimelitta rufipes (Friese) foram capturadas, sendo sete atraídas por salicilato de metila e uma por cineole. Além dessas essências, foram utilizadas mais duas essências, eugenol e vanilina, porém essas duas essências não atraíram nenhum indivíduo. Todas as abelhas foram coletadas ao longo de novembro de 2006. Mesmo com ampla distribuição geográfica, L. rufipes não havia sido registrada na região Sul Fluminense, sendo também o primeiro registro de coletas dessa espécie através de armadilhas com iscas odoríferas. Não foi possível identificar o porquê da atração das operárias de L. rufipes ao salicilato de metila e cineole, uma vez que essas abelhas não visitam flores nem ninhos que poderiam conter tais fragrâncias. O método de coleta através de armadilhas com iscas odoríferas poderá ser empregado com diversos objetivos, entre eles, o de conhecer a riqueza e a distribuição desse gênero em diversas áreas.


This study was done each two months between August 2006 to May 2007 in a South Region in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The traps, a (Carvalho-47) model, were adjusted, then assembled at 9 o'clock and finally removed 48 hours after. In each place of the extraction, 4 traps were assembled, in a total of 20 in all the trail. During the experiment, eight worker bees of Lestrimelitta rufipes, were captured, and seven of them were attracted by methyl salicilate and one by cineole. Beside this essences, two more were used, eugenol and vanillin, but these two ones didn't collect any bees. All the bees were collected during November 2006. Even with such geographical distribution, L. rufipes hasn't been registered in this south region, and this is also the first registered collection of this specie using scent traps. It was not possible to identify the cause of the bee workers L. rufipes attraction by methyl salicilate and cineole, because these bees do not visit flowers, neither nets that could have this fragrance. The method of collection used by scent traps can be used for many purposes and among them the objective of knowing the richness and distribution of these types in different areas.

O pólen de algumas espécies de Stryphnodendron (Mimosoidea), conhecidas popularmente por barbatimão, tem sido apontado como agente causador da mortandade de larvas pré-pupas observada na cria ensacada brasileira (CEB). Neste estudo, objetivou-se identificar os tipos polínicos encontrados em amostras de pólen coletadas em colméias de Apis mellifera L., no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, a fim de elucidar as fontes florais utilizadas por essa espécie de abelhas em períodos sujeitos a CEB, com especial atenção para a presença do pólen de Stryphnodendron spp. Foram coletadas amostras de pólen apícola e pão de abelhas em sete apiários, em três municípios do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. A amostragem foi tomada um mês antes e durante a ocorrência da CEB. As famílias botânicas mais representativas foram: Leguminosae, Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae e Myrtaceae. O pólen de Stryphnodendron não esteve presente nas amostras analisadas. A ausência de Stryphnodendron no menu floral das colônias africanizadas acometidas pela CEB em condições naturais sugere outro fator causal para a CEB no Estado do Rio de Janeiro.


The pollen of some Stryphnodendron species (Mimosoidea), commonly known as barbatimão, has been identified as a causative agent of pre-pulps larvae mortality, observed in Brazilian sac brood disease (BSB). The goal of this study is to identify the pollen types found in samples of pollen collected by Apis mellifera L. to elucidate the floral diet used by this honeybee specie in Rio de Janeiro state during the periods where BSB usually occurs. Particular attention was given to the pollen of Stryphnodendron spp presence. Samples of pollen and bee bread were collected from seven apiaries located in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Sampling procedures were done a month before BSB usual occurrence and also during its occurrence. Leguminosae, Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae and Myrtaceae were most representative botanical families on pollen sampling. Pollen from Stryphnodendron was not presented at the analyzed samples. In order to Stryphnodendron absent at the floral diet of Africanized hives affected by BSB in natural conditions, it is proposed another causal factor for BSB in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

This study examined species richness and relative abundance of eusocial Apidae in an insular region of rain-forest, southeastern Brazil. Sampling took place during one year, using an standardized method with entomological net, at sites of secondary growth habitats surrounded by Atlantic rain-forest. Thirteen species of eusocial Apidae were netted at flowers, over 80 percent of the captured individuals were meliponine species, although the presence of Apis mellifera, commonly dominant in Brazilian habitats. Foraging activity of these bee species were essentially non-seasonal, apparently affected by high humidity. The patterns in abundance and species richness observed in Ilha Grande differed with other studies conducted at tropical islands, which were characterized by the poverty of meliponine species.


Esta pesquisa foi realizada em uma Ilha tropical do Sudeste brasileiro, onde se examinou a riqueza em espécies e sua abundância relativa de abelhas Apidae eussocias. A amostragem foi feita durante um ano, com pulçás entomológicos, utilizando-se método padrão de coleta em regiões de habitat secundário, cercado por floresta de mata Atlântica. Treze espécies de abelhas eussociais foram capturadas nas flores, mais de 80 por cento do total de espécimes eram meliponíneos, apesar da presença de Apis mellifera, comumente dominante nos hábitats brasileiros. O forrageamento das espécies de abelhas apresentou-se asazonal, com forte influência de períodos muito úmidos. Na Ilha Grande, padrões de abundância e riqueza em espécies contrastam com estudos realizados em outras ilhas, que se caracterizam pela baixa ocorrência de meliponíneos.

Estudou-se a flora explorada por Apis mellifera L. (abelhas africanizadas) e meliponíneos, em vegetação de caatinga, no Parque Nacional da Serra da Capivara, PI. Durante um ano foram feitas amostragens mensais em dois locais, utilizando-se redes entomológicas para a coleta das abelhas eussociais em visita às plantas. Coletaram-se 69 espécies de angiopermas de 28 famílias nos dois locais amostrados. Leguminosae foi a família com maior número de espécies florais e de maior visitação pelas abelhas eussociais, como ocorreu com outras localidades de caatinga, mas há poucas espécies melitófilas em comum. As plantas coletadas foram visitadas por 12 espécies de meliponíneos e, ou pelas abelhas africanizadas. A. mellifera visitou 32 espécies florais e os meliponíneos 58 espécies, destes destacou-se Trigona spinipes Fabr. com maior espectro de plantas visitadas. O comportamento oportunista foi aparente em A. mellifera, mas não foi observado em todas as espécies de meliponíneos coletadas. A fenologia da flora e da fauna de abelhas foi similar à relatada em outros estudos regionais de mesma formação florística: abundância e heterogeneidade floral durante a estação chuvosa, favorecendo o forrageamento das abelhas, e escassez de recursos florais durante a seca, quando a ocorrência das abelhas se reduz.


This study presents the flora explored by Apis mellifera L. (Africanized honey bee) and stingless bees, and their seasonal phenology, in a caatinga vegetation, located in the Parque Nacional Serra da Capivara, Piauí State, tropical Brazil. During one year, bees were monthly collected with entomological nets, while visiting flowers. Sampling took place in two places. Eusocial bees, A. mellifera and 12 stingless bees species, were collected visiting 69 angiopermas species. Like reported in other studies on caatinga, a plant family heavily foraged was Leguminosae, but there were a few melittophilic species in common. A. mellifera visited 32 floral species and the stingless bees visited 58 species; among them Trigona spinipes Fabr. had the largest spectrum of plant species visited. A. mellifera showed the opportunistic behavior, but this was not observed with the majority of the stingless bee species. Regarding the seasonal phenology, the picture is like others studies conducted in the caatinga: abundance and floral heterogeneity during the rainy station, when the sampling was most effective, and shortage of floral resources during the dry season, when the occurrence of the eusocial bee species was reduced.
