ABSTRACT

The selection of levels for tomographic sections of the kidneys during intravenous urography has previously been based on empirical observation. Three hundred abdominal computed tomographic scans were analyzed for the anteroposterior (AP) midpoints of the kidneys and their relationship to the patient's AP abdominal diameter. A graph for selection of tomographic levels was generated and compared with existing methods. These guidelines enable a more objective approach to urographic tomography.

ABSTRACT

The surgical approach to the morbidly obese patient has been changing over the years because of complications of the procedure. Evolution of gastric surgical techniques has resulted in a decrease in the radiologically evident complications such as anastomotic leaks, abscess, and marginal ulceration. Knowledge of the pertinent surgical and radiographic anatomy is important to the radiologist in evaluating the patient who has undergone a gastric bypass or gastroplasty for morbid obesity.

ABSTRACT

Although an aberrant left pulmonary artery, usually called a pulmonary sling, is a serious anomaly in neonates and young children, it can be seen initially in adulthood. To date, all adult patients have been without symptoms or associated anomalies. Radiographic findings are somewhat different in adults, although at both ages a soft tissue mass is visible between the esophagus and the distal trachea. In adults, the anomalous left pulmonary artery is more likely seen as a right-sided mediastinal mass on the posteroanterior chest film. A pulmonary sling is apparently a benign and asymptomatic condition in adults.

ABSTRACT

The "halo sign" in hepatic angiography is considered a reliable sign of an intrahepatic mass. A large retroperitoneal mass may present as an hepatic tumor clinically; two such cases are presented in which the halo sign was demonstrated by hepatic angiography. When this "paradoxical" halo sign is present, several factors contribute to the diagnosis of an extra-hepatic mass: (a) minimal stretching or displacement of the hepatic artery or portal vein; (b) lack of draping of the hepatic arteries around the mass; and (c) identification of abnormal vessels or a mass in an adjacent organ.
