ABSTRACT
However, despite successful use of lithium in the treatment of affective disorders for almost 40 years, the mechanisms of its therapeutic action are still poorly understood. This review presents and summarizes the current literature about the use of lithium in treatment of affective disorders, as well as its effects on cellular physiology, with a separate description of the effect of this ion on the functioning of nerve tissue and ion-molecular mechanisms.

The literature review contains data about functions of glycogen synthase kinase-313 (GSK-313) in the cell and its role in the functioning of the nervous tissue, an analysis of current research on the participation of GSK-313 in the pathogenesis of affective disorders and schizophrenia and effect of psychotropic drugs on the activity of the kinase.

OBJECTIVES: To study possibilities of immunological and electrophysiological methods for the diagnosis of paraneoplastic polyneuropathy in cancer. METHODS: We studied 88 cancer patients using electromyography and immunological assay (serum neuronal antibodies). RESULTS: A symmetrical, distal, sensory-motor, axonal-demyelinating form of polyneuropathy can develop in breast cancer and small cell lung cancer. Onconeural antibodies were detected in the serum of more than half of study participants as well as in some healthy donors. Symptoms of polyneuropathy appeared earlier than the diagnosed tumor. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic value of the methods used for the early diagnosis of breast cancer and small cell lung cancer is emphasized.
