ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: Gastric cancer is a significant global issue with a high death rate. This malignancy could be associated with several viral agents such as EBV, CMV, HHV-6, JCV, and BKV. Objective: Evaluation of EBV, CMV, HHV-6 ,and JCV, BKV frequency among gastric cancer patients. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total number of 60 gastric cancer specimens (32 male, 28 female) were retrieved from the pathology lab. Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue was used for molecular testing. DNA was extracted from samples, according to protocol, and used for PCR reaction. Polymerase chain reactions were used to assess CMV, EBV, HHV-6, JCV, and BKV frequency. Results and Conclusion: The mean age of the participants was 61 years and 53.3% (32) of the participants were Male. A total number of 5 samples (8.34%) were infected with viral agents. Four male gastric samples were infected with EBV (6.67%) and only one female sample contained the BKV genome (1.67%). Totally 8.34% of the samples were infected with EBV and BKV. The CMV, HHV-6, and JCV genome was not detected in the samples. In conclusion, the presence of two viral agents including EBV and BKV among male and female samples respectively, and the genome of other viruses were not detected.

ABSTRACT

The inhibition of the α-glucosidase enzyme is crucial for targeting type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). This study introduces a series of synthetic analogs based on thiomethylacetamide-quinoline derivatives linked to diphenyl-imidazole as highly potential α-glucosidase inhibitors. Twenty derivatives were synthesized and screened in vitro against α-glucosidase, revealing IC50 values ranging from 0.18 ± 0.00 to 2.10 ± 0.07 µM, in comparison to the positive control, acarbose. Among these derivatives, compound 10c (IC50 = 0.180 µM) demonstrated the highest potency and revealed a competitive inhibitory mechanism in kinetic studies (Ki = 0.15 µM). Docking and molecular dynamic evaluations elucidated the binding mode of 10c with the active site residues of the α-glucosidase enzyme. Moreover, in vivo assessments on a rat model of DM affirmed the anti-diabetic efficacy of 10c, evidenced by reduced fasting and overall blood glucose levels. The histopathological evaluation enhanced pancreatic islet architecture and hepatocytes in liver sections. In conclusion, novel 2-(quinoline-2-ylthio)acetamide derivatives as potent α-glucosidase inhibitors were developed. Compound 10c emerged as a promising candidate for diabetes management, warranting further investigation for potential clinical applications and mechanistic insights.

ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: The outbreak of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had a significant effect on the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancers. Therefore, in this study, we decided to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the stage and histological characteristics of patients with tongue cancer from March 2020 to March 2021 and compared to the previous 3 years. Methods: In this time series study, patients diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the operated tongue cancer were divided into two groups. Patients who operated from March 2020 to March 2021 (n = 36) and patients who operated 3 years ago (n = 70) were included in the study. The results were analyzed using SPSS 21 software. Results: The study found that during the pandemic, the stage of tongue cancer in patients who underwent surgery was higher than before the pandemic (p = 0.01). Moreover, the depth of invasion was significantly higher during the COVID-19 outbreak in the pathology sample of the patients (p = 0.006), while the involvement of lymph nodes and other variables between the groups was not statistically significant. Conclusion: COVID-19 has adverse effects on the diagnosis and treatment of tongue cancer. Also, it leads to advanced stages of the tumor and increases the depth of invasion of the cancer. Hence, it is important to plan correctly and appropriately for the diagnosis and treatment of these patients in conditions such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background & Objective: Viral infections are associated with the pathogenesis and progression of human malignancies. Several studies have suggested the role of viral infections in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, the results are still conflicting, and the potential role of viruses in PTC tumorigenesis remains to be elucidated. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the presence of parvovirus B19, cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1/HSV-2), and human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 in PTC. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of 40 patients with PTC were used. Tissue blocks were studied for the presence of the virus genome using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: Of the 40 patients with PTC, there was 1 positive case of HPV (2.5%), while 6 cases were positive for parvovirus B19. HSV and CMV DNAs were not detected in any cases. Conclusion: Correlations among HSV, CMV, and PTC are unexpected in our patient population. But parvovirus B19 and, to a lesser extent, HPV DNA genomes were detected in PTC using real-time PCR.

Background: Many studies have been done to identify the factors that influence the development and progression of osteoporosis. One genetic factor is polymorphisms of LRP4 gene. Regarding the lack of comprehensive study on polymorphisms of LRP4 gene in the north of Iran, mainly Mazandaran Province, we decided to investigate the polymorphism of this gene in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Methods: This case-control study has been conducted at GhaemShahr Valiasr Hospital on 100 female patients with osteoporosis (average age of 58.1) and 90 healthy females without osteoporosis (average age of 55.2). After sampling and extraction of genomic DNA via of the salt deposition method, the genotype and SNP (rs9667108) polymorphism of LRP4 gene were evaluated with the PCR-RFLP method. Restriction enzymes cut the PCR products. In order to identify patients, their bone mineral density was tested by the DEXA method. The results of digestion (digestion enzyme) were analyzed by MedCalc, SPSS software, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and Chi2. Results: The statistical analysis has shown the significant relationship between SNP (rs9667108) polymorphism and the risk of osteoporosis disease in patients and control groups (P<0.05). In SNP (rs9667108), the GC genotype, compared to GG, increased the risk of disease significantly (1.556 time). Similarly, CC genotype, compared to GG genotype, increased the risk of this disease by 2.091 time. Conclusion: The existence of mutation in the LRP4 gene could increase susceptibility to osteoporosis disease. Moreover, determining this patient's genotype in SNP (rs9667108) can be used to identify individuals who are in endanger osteoporosis.

Background & Objective: Clear cell carcinoma (CCC) is an uncommon histopathologic subtype of ovarian and endometrial carcinoma. Due to the morphologic overlapping with other subtypes of ovarian and endometrial carcinomas, an accurate diagnosis is crucial. Methods: In this study, 31 cases of ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC), 28 endometrial clear cell carcinoma (ECCC), and 80 non-CCC subtypes (33 high-grade serous carcinomas of the ovary, 2 low-grade serous carcinomas, 10 ovarian endometrioid, 3 serous carcinomas and 29 endometrioid carcinomas of the endometrium) were investigated for immunohistochemical expression of AMACR. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) for the distinction of OCCC and ECCC from other histopathologic subtypes were calculated. Results: Positive AMACR staining was seen in 18 OCCCs (58%) and 10 ECCCs (35.7%). In the non-clear cell group, 44 cases of ovarian (98%) and 25 cases of endometrial carcinoma (78%) showed negative results. Only one case of ovarian endometrioid carcinoma and 7 cases (22%) of endometrial endometrioid carcinomas revealed a positive reaction (P<0.05). Collectively, sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of AMACR expression, for the diagnosis of OCCC were calculated as 58%, 98%, 94.7%, and 77.2%, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV were shown to be as 35.7%, 78.1%, 58.8%, and 58.1%, respectively in the endometrium. Conclusion: AMACR may be a highly specific immunohistochemical marker for the distinction of serous and clear cell carcinoma. A small percentage of endometrioid carcinoma may show positive staining. The sensitivity of this marker may not be higher than the other well-known Napsin-A IHC marker.

Purpose: In recent years, core needle biopsy (CNB) technique has received much attention, being used as alternative method of tissue sampling for surgical biopsy of salivary gland tumors (SGTs). The present study aimed to evaluate the value of CNB in differentiating benign from malignant SGTs. Materials and methods: Patients with suspected benign or malignant SGTs in imaging were enrolled in this study. All core needle biopsies were performed under ultrasound guidance, i.e. ultrasound-guided Core Needle Biopsy (USCNB). Histological examination of the specimen after surgical excision was regarded as gold standard test and set as reference standard to assess USCNB accuracy for discriminating between ultrasound-visible benign and malignant SGTs. Results: Based on USCNB results, from 36 participants (14 women and 22 men) with SGTs, 44.4% of detected tumors were benign and 55.5% were malignant. Twenty-two patients underwent surgery and postoperative specimen histological examination showed that 59% of excised lesions were benign and 41% were malignant. USCNB and surgical biopsy (SB) findings were completely compatible for 21 patients. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and diagnostic accuracy of USCNB were 100% in differentiating malignant from benign lesions. Conclusion: USCNB is a valuable and accurate method of diagnosis with high sensitivity and specificity in distinguishing benign from malignant ultrasound-visible SGTs.

ABSTRACT

Nanocomposites have gained attention due to their variety of applications in different fields. In this research, we have reported a green synthesis of a bi-metallic nanocomposite of nickel and zinc using an aqueous extract of Citrus sinensis in the presence of chitosan (Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan). The nanocomposite was characterized using different techniques. We have examined various applications for Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan. The NPs were manufactured in spherical morphology with a particle range size of 17.34-90.51 nm. Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan showed an acceptable ability to remove dyes of Congo red and methyl orange from an aqueous solution after 80 min furthermore, it uptaking the drug mefenamic acid from a solution. Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan also exhibited great photocatalytic activity in synthesizing benzimidazole using benzyl alcohol and o-phenylenediamine. Ni/Zn@orange/chitosan was found as a potent electrochemical sensor to determine glucose. In the molecular and cellular section of the current research, the cells with composite nanoparticles were studied by MTT way about the anti-breast adenocarcinoma potentials malignant cell lines. The IC50 of composite nanoparticles were 320, 460, 328, 500, 325, 379, 350, and 396 µg/mL concering RBA, NMU, SK-BR-3, CAMA-1, MCF7, AU565, MDA-MB-468, and Hs 281.T breast adenocarcinoma cell lines, respectively. The results revealed the newly synthesized nanocomposite is a potent photocatalyst, dye pollution removal agent, and an acceptable new drug to treat breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

We report a highly stable and affordable dual-wavelength digital holographic microscopy system based on common-path geometry. A Fresnel biprism is used to create an off-axis geometry, and two diode laser sources with different wavelengths λ1 = 532 nm and λ2 = 650 nm generate the dual-wavelength compound hologram. In order to extend the measurement range, the phase distribution is obtained using a synthetic wavelength Λ1 = 2930.5 nm. Furthermore, to improve the system's temporal stability and reduce speckle noise, a shorter wavelength (Λ2 = 292.5 nm) is used. The feasibility of the proposed configuration is validated by the experimental results obtained with Molybdenum trioxide, Paramecium, and red blood cell specimens.

ABSTRACT

The current viral pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), creates health, mental, economic, and other serious challenges that are better to say global crisis. Despite the existence of successful vaccines, the possible mutations which can lead to the born of novel and possibly more dangerous variants of the virus as well as the absence of definitive treatment for this potentially fatal multiple-organ infection in critically ill patients make us keep searching. Theoretically targeting human and viral receptors and enzymes via molecular docking and dynamics simulations can be considered a wise, rational, and efficient way to develop therapeutic agents against COVID-19. In this way, The RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP), main protease, and spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 as well as the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor and transmembrane serine protease 2 are the most discussed and studied targets that play essential roles in the viral life and infection cycle. In the current in silico investigation, the guanidine functionality containing drugs and medicinal substances such as metformin, famotidine, neuraminidase inhibitors, antimalarial medications, anticancer drug imatinib, CGP compounds, and human serine protease inhibitor camostat were studied against the above-mentioned therapeutic targets and most of them (especially imatinib) have revealed an incredible spectrum of free docking scores and MD results. The current in silico investigation that its novel perspective of view is corroborated by the different experimental and clinical evaluations, confirms that the guanidine moiety can be considered as a missing promising pharmacophore in drug design and development approaches against SARS-CoV-2. Considering the chemical potency of this polyamine group in chemical interaction creation, the observed outcomes in this virtual screening were not surprising. On the other hand, the guanidine functional group has unique physico-chemical properties such as basicity that can make the target cells intracellular pH undesirable for the virus entry, uncoating, and cytosolic lifecycle. According to the obtained results in the current study that are interestingly confirmed by the previously reported efficacy of some the guanidine carrying drugs in COVID-19, guanidine as a potential multi-target anti-SARS-CoV-2 functional scaffold deserves further comprehensive investigations. Background: One of the most challenging methods is a free flap reconstruction in the third world: wanting in more endeavors. There is an intense requirement in the realm of training and experience in addressing head and neck defect issues. This study is aimed at expressing our experience with the free flap as a useful reconstruction method. Methods: Some patients were included as candidates in a retrospective study for free flap reconstruction, referring to diverse hospitals in different places in Tehran, Iran, from 2013 to 2020. Patients' demographic data, tumor profile, as well as flap results, were under assessment. Means (±Standard Deviation=SD), and median (with an interquartile range =IQR=Q1-Q3) for continuous variables; frequencies, as well as proportions for categorical variables, were reported. The variables' comparison among both groups - death or survival -was conducted employing either X2 tests or Fisher's accurate test for proportions; also, unpaired t-tests for means. Results: 330 individuals of patients undergoing 7 years of free-flap operation were under evaluation. The age ranged from 7 to 96 years, with an average of 51.91 ± 17.87 (Mean ± SD). The tongue (118, 37.6%) was the tumor's most typical origin; radial forearm flap (133, 40.3%), the most employed flap accompanied by anterolateral thigh flap (110, 33.3%). The success rate of free flaps surgery was 94 %, and merely 20 individuals of (6%) patients experienced flap necrosis; 21 individuals of patients (6.4%) died in the hospital after the surgical operation. Conclusion: In spite of the several limitations in our country as there are in other developing countries, the surgery of free flap reconstruction in head and neck defects has experienced an evolution in the last few years. In order to achieve better outcomes, we are supposed to mitigate the related issues to underlying diseases, patients suffering from, and the delay in the realm of detecting flap vascular complications in our setting.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 associated mucormycosis (CAM) has been known as one of the most severe post-COVID morbidities. OBJECTIVES: To describe CAM cases, identify possible risk factors, and report outcomes of patients. METHODS: This retrospective study was performed in Amir-Alam Hospital, Tehran, Iran between February 2020 and September 2021. Patients with mucormycosis who had an active or previous diagnosis of COVID-19 have been included. RESULTS: Of 94 patients with mucormycosis, 52 (33 men and 19 women; mean age: 57.0 ± 11.82 years) were identified with an active or history of COVID-19. Rhino-orbital, rhino maxillary, rhino-orbito cerebral subtypes of mucormycosis were detected in 6 (11.5%), 18(34.6%), and 28(53.8%) patients. As a control group, 130 (69 men and 61 women; mean age: 53.10 ± 14.49 years) random RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients without mucormycosis have been included. The mean interval between COVID-19 diagnosis and initial mucormycosis symptoms was 16.63 ± 8.4 days (range 0-51). Those in the CAM group had a significantly more severe course of COVID-19 (OR = 3.60, P-value < 0.01). Known history of previous diabetes mellitus (OR = 7.37, P-value < 0.01), smoking (OR = 4.55, P-value < 0.01), and history of receiving high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy because of more severe COVID-19 (P-value = 0.022) were found as risk factors. New-onset post-COVID hyperglycemia was lower in the CAM group (46.2% vs. 63.8%; OR = 0.485, P-value = 0.028). After treatment of the CAM group, 41(78.8%) of patients recovered from mucormycosis. The mean ages of the expired patients in the CAM group were significantly higher than those who recovered from mucormycosis (66.18 ± 9.56 vs. 54.56 ± 11.22 years; P < 0.01); and COVID-19 disease was more severe (P = 0.046). CONCLUSION: Either active or history of COVID-19 can cause an increase in the risk of mucormycosis development. Some of the most important risk factors are the medical history of diabetes mellitus, smoking, and high-dose corticosteroid therapy. CAM is important possible comorbidity related to COVID-19, which could make the post-COVID conditions more complicated. More research and studies with greater sample sizes among different ethnicities are needed to explore the association between COVID-19 and mucormycosis.

ABSTRACT

The highly contagious Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which is a newborn infectious member of the dangerous beta-coronaviruses (ß-CoVs) following SARS and MERS-CoVs, can be regarded as the most significant issue afflicting the whole world shortly after December 2019. Considering CoVs as RNA viruses with a single-stranded RNA genome (+ssRNA), the critical viral enzyme RNA dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) is a promising therapeutic target for the potentially fatal infection COVID-19. Nicotinamide riboside (NR), which is a naturally occurring analogue of Niacin (vitamin B3), is expected to have therapeutic effects on COVID-19 due to its super close structural similarity to the proven RdRp inhibitors. Thus, at the first phase of the current molecular docking and dynamics simulation studies, we targeted SARS-CoV-2 RdRp. On the next phase, SARS-CoV RdRp, human Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, Inosine-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase, and the SARS-CoV-2 Structural Glycoproteins Spike, Nonstructural viral protein 3-Chymotrypsin-like protease, and Papain-like protease were targeted using the docking simulation to find other possible antiviral effects of NR serendipitously. In the current study, the resulted scores from molecular docking and dynamics simulations as the primary determinative factor as well as the observed reliable binding modes have demonstrated that Nicotinamide Riboside and its active metabolite NMN can target human ACE2 and IMPDH, along with the viral Spro, Mpro, PLpro, and on top of all, RdRp as a potential competitive inhibitor.

ABSTRACT

Despite the significant development in vaccines and therapeutics cocktails, there is no specific treatment available for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Targeting the main protease (Mpro) of SARS-CoV-2, which possesses a key role in producing the essential viral structural and functional proteins, can be considered an efficient way to control this potentially lethal infection. Recently, some of Michael acceptor-pharmacophore containing inhibitors have been suggested as successful suppressors of the main protease. Here, we synthesized the Isatin-based Schiff bases possessing the structural pattern of a Michael acceptor-like portion employing synthesis procedures. In silico investigation of these compounds was not limited to the main protease. We have also evaluated their possible inhibitory activity against the other identified druggable targets using homology modeling, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulations. Our investigations revealed that the dimethyl biguanide carrying Schiff bases of Isatin-derivatives have the best binding mode and interaction energy. The dimethyl biguanide moiety-containing compounds have formed promising interactions with the key amino acid residues Cys145 and HIS41 of Mpro with a binding free energy of -7.6 kcal/mol which was lower than the positive control compound Carmofur (-6.3 kcal/mol). It also leads to the higher affinity and the much inhibitory potential against the SARS-CoV-2 RdRp and Spike glycoproteins, human TMPRSS2, and ACE2 receptors.

ABSTRACT

The spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2) interacts with the ACE2 receptor in human cells and starts the infection of COVID-19 disease. Given the importance of spike protein's interaction with ACE2 receptor, we selected some antiviral peptides of venom scorpion such as HP1090, meucin-13, and meucin-18 and performed docking and molecular docking analysis of them with the RBD domain of spike protein. The results showed that meucin-18 (FFGHLFKLATKIIPSLFQ) had better interaction with the RBD domain of spike protein than other peptides. We also designed some mutations in meucin-18 and investigated their interactions with the RBD domain. The results revealed that the A9T mutation had more effective interaction with the RBD domain than the meucin-18 and was able to inhibit spike protein's interaction with ACE2 receptor. Hence, peptide "FFGHLFKLTTKIIPSLFQ" can be considered as the potential drug for the treatment of COVID-19 disease.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of double skin paddle anterolateral thigh flap (ALT) to reconstruction of through and through oral cavity defect due to cancer surgery.A prospective review was performed of patients referred to Firoozgar and Erfan hospitals with oral cavity defects with two or more oral cavity subunits and skin simultaneously involvement and immediate reconstruction using double-skin paddle ALT flap at the same time of tumor ablation from January 2019 to November 2020.A total number of 6 patients was evaluated. The mean area of skin paddle was 110.4 cm2 and 92.8 cm2 in distal and proximal paddle respectively. Except one patient was complicated and expired in hospital admission, the remaining 5 patients got fully oral intake and completely survived flaps with primarily closed donor site. Tumor recurrence was not found in the mean follow-up time of 12 months.The double skin paddle anterolateral thigh flap serves as an efficient reconstruction technique in complex and perforating oral cavity defects with the same functional outcome and the same flap related complications as conventional ALT flap.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common demyelinating neurodegenerative disorder with significant heritability. Previous studies have associated genetic variants in human leukocyte antigen (HLA) complex, IL2RA , and HMGB1 genes with the pathophysiology of MS. METHODS: In order to investigate the gene association in the Iranian population, we performed a genotyping study of 36 variants in the mentioned genes using Sanger sequencing in 102 MS patients and 113 healthy controls. RESULTS: Our results identified significant associations as well as significant allele frequency differences in some of the studied single-nucleotide polymorphisms including rs4935356, rs3177928, and rs7197 from HLA-DRA gene, and rs12722489 and rs12722490 variants from IL2RA gene (p< 0.05). Moreover, the strong linkage disequilibrium of two common haplotypes was estimated from the HLA-DRA gene. CONCLUSION: This association study may suggest the role of these polymorphisms in the genetic susceptibility of MS in the Iranian population and would facilitate the recognition of causative variants in this disease.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a worldwide health concern which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Both viral and host factors have a significant effect on infection, replication and pathogenesis of HBV. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of CYP2E1 and CYP1A1 genetic variants on susceptibility to HBV. 143 individuals including 54 chronic HBV patients and 89 healthy controls were enrolled in the genotyping procedure. rs2031920 and rs3813867 at CYP2E1 as well as rs4646421 and rs2198843 at CYP1A1 loci were studied in all subjects using PCR-RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) analysis. Both variants at CYP2E1 locus were monomorphic in all studied subjects. Genotype frequency of rs4646421 was significantly different between chronic HBV patients and healthy blood donors (P = 0.04, OR 4.31; 95% CI 1.04-17.7). Furthermore, individuals carrying at least one C allele (CC or CT genotypes) for rs4646421 seemed to have a decrease risk of hepatitis in comparison with TT genotype (P = 0.039). Our results showed a relationship between rs4646421 TT genotype (rare genotype) and the risk for developing chronic HBV infection (four times higher). Further studies are needed to examine the role of CYP1A1 polymorphism in susceptibility to chronic HBV infection.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can invade the thyroid gland leading to unnecessary thyroidectomies with subsequent hypothyroidism and hyperparathyroidism. Thus, clinicopathological variables should be defined in order to predict thyroid gland invasion preoperatively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 1,465 patients with laryngeal SCC referred to our center between March 2009 and January 2016. Among these patients, 60 individuals underwent total laryngectomy and either thyroid lobectomy and isthmectomy or total thyroidectomy. RESULTS: Thyroid gland invasion was observed in 20% of samples. The following variables were associated with thyroid gland invasion: transglottic spread of the tumor (odds ratio [OR]: 2.04, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.15-5.81, P=0.004), thyroid cartilage involvement (OR: 1.53, 95% CI: 0.94-2.50, P=0.02), and anterior commissure involvement (OR: 5.75, 95% CI: 0.86-38.42, P=0.01). In addition, the largest dimension of the tumor was significantly associated with thyroid gland involvement (r=0.36, 95% CI 0.05-0.67, P=0.004). Multivariate linear regression analysis confirmed these findings. CONCLUSION: The rate of thyroidectomies performed in cases of laryngeal SCC is much higher than the actual rate of thyroid gland invasion. Thus, preoperative evaluation to find transglottic spread of the tumor, thyroid cartilage, and anterior commissure involvement should be considered.
