ABSTRACT

Purpose: Schizophrenia patients show impaired conditional reasoning. This study was to investigate event-related potential (ERP) characteristics of the conditional reasoning in schizophrenia. Patients and methods: Participants included 24 schizophrenia patients and 30 normal controls (NCs), and the measurements of ERPs were conducted during the Wason selection task. Results: Results showed that NCs consistently outperformed schizophrenia patients in terms of accuracy. Among the different rule types of the task, the precautionary type experiment yielded the highest accuracy rates. In contrast, both the descriptive and abstract type experiments resulted in lower accuracy. The RTs of the abstract type experiment were the shortest among the four experiments. In the abstract type of the Wason selection task, the NCs exhibited higher amplitudes for both the N1 and P2 components compared to the schizophrenia patients. At the parietal lobe, the N2 amplitudes were higher for the social contract type of the task compared to the precautionary version. At the frontal lobe, the N2 amplitudes were highest for the abstract type of the task. In the abstract type, the N2 amplitude at the parietal lobe was higher than that at the central lobe. The NCs displayed lower amplitudes for both the P3 and slow wave compared to the schizophrenia patients. Differences were observed between the NC and schizophrenia groups in terms of the latencies for N1, P2, N2, P3 and slow wave components across different experiment types and regions of interest. Conclusion: In conclusion, the observed ERP patterns provide valuable insights into the neural mechanisms underlying the Wason selection task, highlighting the differences between NCs and patients with schizophrenia.

ABSTRACT

Healthy diets are not affordable to all in Africa due to a combination of high food prices and low incomes. However, how African consumers might change demand patterns if prices or incomes were to change remains poorly understood. Using nationally representative household panel survey data from five sub-Saharan African countries, we model consumer preferences and examine how nutrient intake responds to changing food prices, total expenditures and other demand determinants. Here we find a stronger positive relationship between growth in poor consumers' total expenditures and their nutrient intake adequacy than has been previously documented. We also find that poor consumers' intake adequacy is especially sensitive to food staple prices in countries where one food staple dominates poor consumers' diets. In countries with multiple food staples, no single staple's price is a strong determinant of poor consumers' dietary intake adequacy.

ABSTRACT

With the widespread application of carbon dots (CDs) in fluorescence imaging, their toxicity has become a focal point of concern. The potential toxicity of CDs synthesized from different raw materials remains an unresolved issue. Laver and wakame, which are commonly popular sea vegetable foods rich in nutrients, were utilized to investigate whether synthetic CDs derived from these alga sources retain medicinal value. Herein, two types of fluorescent alga-derived CDs were prepared through hydrothermal synthesis using laver and wakame respectively. Zebrafish were immersed in both types of CDs to observe their fluorescence imaging effects within the zebrafish bodies. It was observed that laver-derived CDs and wakame-derived CDs exhibited similar luminescence properties but differed in terms of fish egg imaging localization. Additionally, intestinal flora sequencing revealed varying degrees of influence on the zebrafish gut microbiota by the two types of CDs, suggesting that both alga-derived CDs could enhance the abundance of intestinal flora in zebrafish.

ABSTRACT

Recently, carbon dots (CDs) have been shown to exhibit exceptional water solubility, low toxicity, favorable biocompatibility, stable fluorescence properties with a wide and continuous excitation spectrum, and an adjustable emission spectrum. Their remarkable characteristics make them highly promising for applications in the field of bioimaging. Zebrafish is currently extensively studied because of its high genetic homology with humans and the applicability of disease research findings from zebrafish to humans. Therefore, spirulina, a commonly used feed additive in aquaculture, was chosen as the raw material for synthesizing fluorescent CDs using a hydrothermal method. On the one hand, CDs can modulate dopamine receptors in the brain of zebrafish, leading to an increase in dopamine production and subsequently promoting their locomotor activity. On the other hand, CDs have been shown to enhance the intestinal anti-inflammatory capacity of zebrafish. This study aimed to explore the chronic toxicity and genotoxicity of CDs in zebrafish while providing valuable insights for their future application in biological and medical fields.

ABSTRACT

Consumer preferences can be leveraged to magnify the impacts of agricultural investments and interventions on diets for all consumers in an economy, not just farmers. Using nationally representative panel data from Tanzania, we estimate demand for 19 food groups using an Exact Affine Stone Index censored demand system, which is flexible, utility-theoretic, controls for unobserved heterogeneity, and accounts for bias arising from endogenous prices. We find strong links between growth in household expenditures and improved diet quality. Also, staple grain prices are important determinants of nutrient intake. For poor consumers, e.g., protein and iron intake are more sensitive to maize price changes than to changing prices of other foods that contain more protein and iron. We use simulations to show that cash transfers and price vouchers targeting staple grains, pulses & nuts, and starchy staples could be effective in shrinking gaps between recommended and actual dietary intake for poor consumers.
