ABSTRACT

A pilot trial of efficacy of the drugs lisobact and stomatidin in local treatment of acute pharyngitis and combined therapy of tonsillitis and paratonsillar abscess included 82 patients with tonsillitis (n=30), paratonsillar abscess (n=30) and acute pharyngitis (n=22) aged 15-72 years. Effectiveness of the treatment was assessed by changes in clinical symptoms, pharyngoscopic picture and results of bacteriological studies. It was found that treatment with lisobact and stomatidin diminished considerably bacterial contamination of the paratonsillar abscess and pharyngeal mucosa. Local treatment with lisobact and stomatidin for paratonsillar abscess in combination with systemic antibacterial drug reduces the time of hospital stay, in tonsillitis patients - of disability. High compliance to lisobact and stomatidin treatment was observed.

ABSTRACT

Microbiological and chromato-mass-spectrometric examinations were made in 53 patients with chronic maxillary ethmoiditis and 52 patients with chronic tonsillitis. The microflora showed strong resistance to unprotected penicillines and cephalosporins, 100% sensitivity to amoxicilline clavulanate and mupirocine. The role of opportunistic microflora as pathogens of ENT inflammation is growing as well as the percentage of anaerobic microorganisms detected chromato-mass-spectrometrically in chronic inflammation. Administration of mupirocine on polyethylenglicol base early after operation in patients with chronic maxillary ethmoiditis accelerated recovery of the study group patients by 2-3 days vs control patients.

ABSTRACT

The study assessed efficiency of local antibiotic therapy with mupirocin and amoxicillin/clavulanate in 28 patients radically operated on the maxillary sinus (MS). Early after the operation, MS tamponing with a latex tampon was made. The tampon was filled with mupirocin for patients of group 1. In patients of group 2 and controls the tampon was sterile but in group 2 after the tampon removal postoperative maxillary washing was made with amoxicillin/clavulanate solution. The results of the study demonstrated high efficiency of local administration of mupirocin and amoxicillin/clavulanate and validity of bacteriological examination in planning antibiotic therapy early after surgery.

ABSTRACT

Augmentin (SmithKline Beecham) was used in the treatment of 24 patients after operations on the otorhinolaryngologic organs. The drug was administered orally, intravenously or applied locally. After a radical operation on the maxillary sinus the use of augmentin resulted in a marked decrease of the wound secretion and soft tissue edema on the 6th-7th days. After tonsillectomy cleaning of the tonsil niche from the fibrin patches and the epithelialization started on the 4th-5th days. After operations on the temporal bone cleaning of the postoperative cavity and beginning of the epithelialization were observed on the 9th-10th days. On the whole, the use of augmentin accelerated the cure which was recorded 3-4 days earlier.
