ABSTRACT

We describe a case of primary renal pelvic carcinoma which showed an unusual histologic pattern of anastomosing blood-filled channels lined by atypical cells. This angiosarcomatoid pattern merged with solid areas typical of renal carcinoma. Immunoperoxidase stains for cytokeratin and epithelial membrane antigen were positive in both the angiosarcomatoid and typical carcinomatous areas, while stains for factor VIII-related antigen and desmin were negative. Since primary renal angiosarcomas are rare neoplasms, the diagnosis of sarcomatoid renal carcinoma should be considered in primary renal neoplasms which show this angiosarcomatoid pattern.

ABSTRACT

Laminated iron concretions were noted in the liver of an aged siamang (Hylobates syndactylus) that had granulomatous enteritis and hepatitis due to Mycobacterium avium intracellulare infection. Preexisting hepatic siderosis, iron sequestration in macrophages, and compromised macrophage function due to mycobacterial infection are proposed as the basis for the abundance and size of the concretions. Similar siderophilic bodies and concomitant siderosis occurred in other siamangs. The concretions are similar to Schumann bodies and Michaelis-Gutmann bodies associated with granulomatous disease in other species.

ABSTRACT

An irritated left eye followed by a geographic epithelial corneal defect developed in a 42-year-old man. Disciform edema developed in the cornea, and the lesion progressed to a ring-shaped abscess. The lesion failed to respond to medical therapy. After two penetrating keratoplasties, histopathologic examination and electron microscopic studies established the diagnosis of Acanthamoeba keratitis. Subsequent cultures and immunofluorescent studies identified the organism as Acanthamoeba castellani. Following treatment with antibiotics and corneal cryotherapy, there has been no evidence of recurrence. Morphologically and immunologically identical amebae were also cultured from the patient's hot tub and surrounding garden.
