ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To provide a scientific basis for the development of children's eye health measures in Binhu District of Wuxi City by understanding the visual development status of children aged 0-6 years old in the region.
METHODS: A total of 3 695 children of 0-6 years old from preschool children in Binhu District received quickly check of eye's refractive status by using the SureSight automatic screening refractor, and determine the results by referring to the refractive screening referral standard norm for each age groups offered by the US Welch Allyn company. All participating preschool children have completed a vision screening and a comprehensive eye examination.
RESULTS: The total of abnormal rate was 9.76%, suspicious rate was 5.40% in vision screened children, along with the age increase, the abnormal and suspicious detection rates had a tendency to rise, differences in vision screening results of each age group were statistically significant(χ2=15.913, P=0.014), and differences between boys and girls had no statistical significance(χ2=7.200, P=0.066). The highest proportion of abnormal vision was astigmatism(13.89%, 17.96%, 17.62%, 11.50%), followed by hyperopia(0.35%, 1.91%, 3.60%, 8.86%)and anisometropia(0.69%, 0.67%, 1.64%, 2.07%)in different age groups. Hyperopia(4.38%), myopia(0.82%), astigmatism(15.65%), anisometropia(1.42%)and any refractive(0.466%), these five types in the distribution of various age groups. The prevalence of astigmatism in preschool children in 0-3 years old were 6.94%(95%CI: 4.90%-9.00%)and the 3-4 years old were 8.98%(95%CI: 7.80%-10.20%), the 4-5 years old were 8.81%(95%CI: 7.70%-9.90%), the 5-6 years old were 5.75%(95%CI: 4.80%-6.70%). The prevalence of astigmatism in different age groups had no statistical difference(χ2=0.872, P=0.929).
CONCLUSION: Astigmatism was the most common type of ametropia in preschool children, followed by hyperopia and anisometropia. Although no myopia was found, it confirmed the previous research that myopia was not formed at early age. Preschool children vision screening and eye care should be implemented regularly.

ABSTRACT

Both CO and H2 can be utilized as energy sources during the autotrophic growth of Clostridium ljungdahlii. In principle, CO is a more energetically and thermodynamically favorable energy source for gas fermentation in comparison to H2. Therefore, metabolism may vary during growth under different energy sources. In this study, C. ljungdahlii was fed with CO and/or CO2/H2 at pH 6.0 with a gas pressure of 0.1 MPa. C. ljungdahlii primarily produced acetate in the presence of H2 as an energy source, but produced alcohols with CO as an energy source under the same fermentation conditions. A key enzyme activity assay, metabolic flux analysis, and comparative transcriptomics were performed for investigating the response mechanism of C. ljungdahlii under different energy sources. A CO dehydrogenase and an aldehyde:ferredoxin oxidoreductase were found to play important roles in CO utilization and alcohol production. Based on these findings, novel metabolic schemes are proposed for C. ljungdahlii growing on CO and/or CO2/H2. These schemes indicate that more ATP is produced during CO-fermentation than during H2-fermentation, leading to increased alcohol production.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy and impacts of air tamponadein treating rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD) including inferior breaks after 25G pars plana vitrectomy (PPV).Methods:A prospective non-randomized study. From November 2016 to December 2018, 110 RRD patients receiving PPV in the Ophthalmology Department of Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University were included in the study. All the patients choose the operation mode voluntarily after fully understand the condition and operation mode. There were 90 eyes in the air filling group and 20 eyes in the silicone oil filling group. There was no difference of age ( t=-0.082), sex ratio ( χ2=1.538), left or right eye ( χ2=0.839), average course of disease ( Z=-0.276), intraocular pressure ( t=3.669), axial length ( t=0.765), grade of proliferative vitreous retinopathy ( Z=-2.101), high myopia ( χ2=0.013), lens state ( χ2=1.275), logMAR BCVA ( t=-0.681), the scope of retinal detachment ( t=0.970), the site ( χ2=0.108) and numbers ( t=0.158) of the retinal holes, whether involving macula ( χ2=1.791) between the two groups ( P>0.05). At 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery, the first retinal reduction rate, BCVA increase rate, visual recovery rate, intraocular pressure, fovea retinal thickness (CFT), ellipsoid and cross sectional area, and the occurrence of postoperative complications in the two groups were observed and compared. Independent sample t test and Chi-squared test, Mann-Whitney U test, and ANOVA were used for data comparision. Results:After the first operation, retinal reattachmnents were achieved in 87 eyes (96.6%) in the air group and 19 eyes (95.0%) in the silicone oil group ( χ2=0.130, P>0.05). In the air group and the silicone oil group, there were 7 and 2 eyes with subretinal holes, whose retinal reattachmnents were achieved. At 6 months after surgery, logMAR BCVA of the eyes in the air group and the silicone oil group were 0.23±0.23 and 0.37±0.23, respectively. All of them were higher than that before operation ( t=-2.410, P<0.001). BCVA in the air group was superior to that in the silicone oil group ( P<0.05). The increase rate of BCVA of the eyes in the air group and the silicone oil group were 0.69±0.28 and 0.48±0.30 logMAR units, respectively ( t=-3.225, P<0.05). The CFT of the eyes in the air group and the silicone oil group were 226.87±42.30 μm and 234.83±36.10 μm, respectively ( t=-0.448, P=0.657). In the air group and silicone oil group, posterior cataract was observed in 15 and 4 eyes, subretinal residual fluid in 1 and 2 eyes, and visual object deformation in 3 eyes respectively. In the air group and silicone oil group, posterior cataract was observed in 15 and 4 eyes, subretinal residual fluid in 1 and 2 eyes, and visual object deformation in 3 eyes respectively. Conclusions:Air filling combined with PPV can effectively treat RRD, which is suitable for both superior and inferior holes. The visual acuity recovered well and the complication is less. The time of retinal detachment (especially the time of macular detachment) is an important factor affecting the prognosis.

ABSTRACT

To investigate weak gel-assisted microbial flooding in Block Wang Long Zhuang in the Jiangsu Oilfield, the compatibility of weak gel and microbe was evaluated using laboratory experiments. Bacillus sp. W5 was isolated from the formation water in Block Wang Long Zhuang. The rate of oil degradation reached 178 mg/day, and the rate of viscosity reduction reached 75.3%. Strain W5 could produce lipopeptide with a yield of 1254 mg/L. Emulsified crude oil was dispersed in the microbial degradation system, and the average diameter of the emulsified oil particles was 18.54 µm. Bacillus sp. W5 did not affect the rheological properties of the weak gel, and the presence of the weak gel did not significantly affect bacterial reproduction (as indicated by an unchanged microbial biomass), emulsification (surface tension is 35.56 mN/m and average oil particles size is 21.38 µm), oil degradation (162 mg/day) and oil viscosity reduction (72.7%). Core-flooding experiments indicated oil recovery of 23.6% when both weak gel and Bacillus sp. W5 were injected into the system, 14.76% when only the weak gel was injected, and 9.78% with strain W5 was injected without the weak gel. The results demonstrate good compatibility between strains W5 and the weak gel and highlight the application potential of weak gel-assisted microbial flooding.

ABSTRACT

The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-degrading strain Q8 was isolated from oilfield produced water. According to the analysis of a biochemical test, 16S rRNA gene, house-keeping genes and DNA-DNA hybridization, strain Q8 was assigned to a novel species of the genus Gordonia. The strain could not only grow in mineral salt medium (MM) and utilize naphthalene and pyrene as its sole carbon source, but also degraded mixed naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene and pyrene. The degradation ratio of these four PAHs reached 100%, 95.4%, 73.8% and 53.4% respectively after being degraded by Q8 for seven days. A comparative experiment found that the PAHs degradation efficiency of Q8 is higher than that of Gordonia alkaliphila and Gordonia paraffinivorans, which have the capacities to remove PAHs. Fourier transform infrared spectra, saturate, aromatic, resin and asphaltene (SARA) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of crude oil degraded by Q8 were also studied. The results showed that Q8 could utilize n-alkanes and PAHs in crude oil. The relative proportions of the naphthalene series, phenanthrene series, thiophene series, fluorene series, chrysene series, C21-triaromatic steroid, pyrene, and benz(a)pyrene were reduced after being degraded by Q8. Gordonia sp. nov. Q8 had the capacity to remediate water and soil environments contaminated by PAHs or crude oil, and provided a feasible way for the bioremediation of PAHs and oil pollution.

ABSTRACT

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a rare space-occupying lesion of unknown etiology that can mimic malignancy on clinic-radiological and pathological examination. We describe a rare case of ileocecal intussusception from clinically suspected malignancy of the right colon where the patient underwent right hemicolectomy. Histopathology of the resected specimen confirmed IPT of the colon. This patient was observed to have abnormally elevated total leukocyte count and platelets before and after surgery. In an adult with intussusception associated with an abdominal mass, the possibility of IPT of the colon should be considered. Considering the abnormally high total leukocyte and platelet counts and colonic IPT, it is necessary to prevent postoperative adverse effects due to these changes. Although IPT of the colon is usually a benign process, controversy regarding its management still exists. We consider hemicolectomy as a safe treatment approach for colonic IPT and review the existing literature.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo research the effects of Qingyang Toujie Mixture (QTM) in combination with prednisone tablet on the balance of Th1 and Th2 (Th1/Th2) of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients of yin deficiency syndrome (YDS).

METHODSTotally 42 patients with SLE were recruited from clinics of internal medicine and hospitalization department of First Hospital Affiliated to Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from August 2009 to March 2011. They were randomly assigned to the treatment group (22 cases) and the control group (20 cases) according to the random digit table. Another 12 healthy subjects were recruited as the healthy control group from employees of First Hospital Affiliated to Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and healthy students in physical examinations. All patients took prednisone tablet. The dosage was adjusted according to the severity of SLE activity index and the condition: 40 -60 mg per day for severe active stage; 20-40 mg per day for moderate active stage; 15 -20 mg per day for light active stage; and less than 15 mg per day for those in the stable stage, respectively. When patients' condition had been stabilized for 1 to 2 weeks, the dosage was gradually reduced according to the method of hormone reduction. In case of the recurrence of symptoms or when complicated with lupus nephritis or lupus encephalitis uncontrollable, standard shock therapy with Cyclophosphamide Injection (0.5-1 g/m2 body surface area, intravenous dripping, once every 4 weeks) was performed. Patients in the treatment group took QTM additionally, one dose daily, taken in two portions, once in the morning and once in the evening. Those in the control group took placebos additionally, one dose daily, taken in two portions, once in the morning and once in the evening. The therapeutic course was 6 months for all. No measure was taken for those in the healthy control group. Venous blood was withdrawal before and after treatment. Th1 cytokines (IFN-gamma, IL-12) and Th2 cytokines (IL-10, IL-4) were detected by ELISA.

RESULTSCompared with the healthy control group, the serum Th1 cytokines such as IL-12 and IFN-gamma, Th2 cytokines such as IL-10 and IL-4 increased, the Th1/Th2 ratios such as IFN-gamma/IL-4 and IL-12/IL-10 decreased in the treatment group and the control group before treatment (P < 0.01). Compared with before treatment in the same group, the serum Th1 cytokines such as IL-12 and IFN-gamma decreased, the serum Th2 cytokines such as IL-10 and IL-4 decreased, the ratios of Th1/Th2 cytokines such as IFN-gamma/IL-4 and IL-12/IL-10 increased in the treatment group (all P < 0.05). Compared with the control group after treatment, IL-4 decreased, and the ratio of IFN-gamma/IL-4 increased in the treatment group (P < 0.05). Fewer patients suffered from adverse reactions in the treatment group than in the control group (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONQTM in combination with prednisone tablet was effective to improve the balance of Th1/Th2 cytokines, and alleviate the toxic and adverse reactions of hormone or immune inhibitors.
