ABSTRACT

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common respiratory disease in children. This prospective cohort study of 110 children with CAP and 100 healthy children investigated the relationship between the levels of vitamin A, D and E and inflammatory markers, such as tumour necrosis factor (TNF-a), interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-10 (IL-10), neutrophils (NE) and C-reactive protein (CRP), in CAP. The haemoglobin, leukocyte concentration, NE, monocytes and CRP concentration in the CAP group showed significant differences (P < 0.05). The levels of vitamin A, D and E in the CAP group were lower than those in the control group, while the levels of TNF-a and IL-1 were higher than in the control group; the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). The IL-10 levels showed no significant differences (P > 0.05). Pearson analysis revealed that the vitamin A, D and E levels were all correlated with the TNF-a, IL-10 and CRP levels (P < 0.05). The vitamin A, D and E levels of the CAP children were lower than those of the healthy children. Thus, the content of fat-soluble vitamins is correlated with the secretion of TNF-a and IL-10. The research provides a new direction for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CAP.

ABSTRACT

The presence of translucent eggshells is a type of egg quality issue that impacts egg sales. While many researchers have studied them, the exact mechanisms behind their formation remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a transcriptomic differential expression analysis of the isthmus region of the oviduct in both normal egg- and translucent egg-laying hens. The analysis revealed that differentially expressed gene pathways were predominantly concentrated in the synthesis, modification, and transport of eggshell membrane proteins, particularly collagen proteins, which provide structural support. These findings suggest that variations in the physical structure of the eggshell membrane, resulting from changes in its chemical composition, are the fundamental cause of translucent eggshell formation. This research provides a theoretical reference for reducing the occurrence of translucent eggs.

ABSTRACT

Background: To explore the association of DNA methylation and gene expression in the pathology of obesity. Methods: (1) Genomic DNA methylation and mRNA expression profile of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) were performed in a comprehensive database of gene expression in obese and normal subjects. (2) Functional enrichment analysis and construction of differential methylation gene regulatory networks were performed. (3) Validation of the two different methylation sites and corresponding gene expression was done in a separate microarray dataset. (4) Correlation analysis was performed on DNA methylation and mRNA expression data. Results: A total of 77 differentially expressed mRNAs matched with differentially methylated genes. Analysis revealed two different methylation sites corresponding to two unique genes-s100a8-cg09174555 and s100a9-cg03165378. Through the verification test of two interesting different expression positions [differentially methylated positions (DMPs)] and their corresponding gene expression, we found that methylation in these genes was negatively correlated to gene expression in the obesity group. Higher S100A8 and S100A9 expressions in obese subjects were validated in a separate microarray dataset. Conclusion: This study confirmed the relationship between DNA methylation and gene expression and emphasized the important role of S100A8 and S100A9 in the pathogenesis of obesity.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we present a new kind of perovskite, (FAI)0.46(MAI)0.40(MABr)0.14(PbI2)0.86(PbBr2)0.14, the vacuum flash-assisted solution processing (VASP) of which can be carried out under relative humidity (RH) higher than 50% in ambient air. The smooth and highly crystalline perovskite showed a maximum PCE of 18.8% in perovskite solar cells. This kind of perovskite was demonstrated to be of good stability in ambient air. Holes and electrons have larger and more balanced diffusion lengths (643.7/621.9 nm) than those in the MAPbI3 perovskite (105.0/129.0 nm) according to the PL quenching experiment. The role of incorporating a large amount of MA+ cations to stabilize the intermediate phase via VASP under high RH is attributed to their better ability to intercalate into the sharing face of the one-dimensional face-sharing [PbI6] octahedra, forming the three-dimensional corner-sharing form. Moreover, hole/electron transfer times at the perovskite/Spiro-OMeTAD (PCBM) interfaces (8.90/9.20 ns) were found to be much larger than those in the MAPbI3 perovskite (0.75/0.40 ns), indicating that there still is enormous potential in further improving the performance of this kind of perovskite solar cell by interfacial engineering.
